[00:01:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Hello, Simone.
[00:01:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Hey, y'all.
[00:01:37] [SPEAKER_02]: So happy to be back.
[00:01:39] [SPEAKER_02]: We're so excited to have you back.
[00:01:42] [SPEAKER_02]: We are.
[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_02]: I love that you do the spooky movies with us.
[00:01:48] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, this is my jam, man.
[00:01:50] [SPEAKER_04]: If I'm not watching like a silly musical, I'm going like scary all the way.
[00:01:57] [SPEAKER_02]: If you want to get to know Simone a little better, come back later this week as we count down our favorite ghost movies.
[00:02:02] [SPEAKER_02]: And don't forget to go back to check out Simone during our Love and Basketball 7 and MTV VMA episodes and bonus episodes.
[00:02:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Check out our show notes for all of the links.
[00:02:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, let's dive into The Sixth Sense.
[00:02:17] [SPEAKER_03]: The Sixth Sense is a psychological thriller that follows child psychologist Dr. Malcolm Crowe
[00:02:24] [SPEAKER_03]: as he tries to help a young boy named Cold Seer who claims to see and communicate with the dead.
[00:02:31] [SPEAKER_03]: As Crowe delves deeper into Cole's troubled mind, he discovers a shocking truth that changes everything he thought he knew about life and death.
[00:02:40] [SPEAKER_03]: This haunting tale of grief, fear, and redemption is remembered for its masterful twist ending and chilling atmosphere.
[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_03]: The movie stars Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osment, Toni Collette, Olivia Williams, and Donnie Wahlberg.
[00:02:54] [SPEAKER_03]: It was written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan.
[00:02:57] [SPEAKER_03]: And you can currently watch it on Macs.
[00:02:59] [SPEAKER_03]: But before we start, let's get into our ratings rewind.
[00:03:03] [SPEAKER_02]: So you know the drill.
[00:03:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Before we get into the movie, we'll reveal the rating our Y2K versions of ourselves would give.
[00:03:08] [SPEAKER_02]: And at the end, we'll see if our current selves agree with our initial rating.
[00:03:13] [SPEAKER_02]: Scale consists of would buy it, would buy it again.
[00:03:17] [SPEAKER_02]: The best would play on repeat.
[00:03:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Five-day rental.
[00:03:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Would watch again.
[00:03:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Two-day rental.
[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Eh, okay, but nothing to write home about.
[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_03]: And same-day rental.
[00:03:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Trash.
[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Burn it up.
[00:03:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Cremated.
[00:03:33] Trash.
[00:03:35] [SPEAKER_02]: So Simone, what was your Y2K rating of The Sixth Sense?
[00:03:41] [SPEAKER_04]: So first of all, I'd like to apologize because whenever someone asks me a question, I can never give the answer directly.
[00:03:47] [SPEAKER_04]: You need like a five-minute story with background context.
[00:03:51] [SPEAKER_04]: So I hope this episode isn't like three hours.
[00:03:54] [SPEAKER_04]: I lovingly have the gift of gab.
[00:03:56] [SPEAKER_04]: But when I saw this in the theater, I knew that this movie was unlike any other scary movie I had seen.
[00:04:05] [SPEAKER_04]: And I feel like I still kind of feel the same way about it.
[00:04:08] [SPEAKER_04]: We owned this on DVD.
[00:04:10] [SPEAKER_04]: And it was a DVD that I brought back to my house when I had to do the great garage clean out.
[00:04:17] [SPEAKER_04]: So it is with me.
[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_04]: But yeah, it was definitely a would buy, would buy it again.
[00:04:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Jackie?
[00:04:25] [SPEAKER_02]: So I went on a field trip to see this movie for our video production class.
[00:04:33] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, fun.
[00:04:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Our TV production class.
[00:04:36] [SPEAKER_02]: That's not like when Ken said that he was really scared and ran out of the theater.
[00:04:40] [SPEAKER_02]: I was like, I went on a field trip to see this movie.
[00:04:43] [SPEAKER_02]: And you were a grown man running out of theater because you were scared.
[00:04:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Just getting that out there.
[00:04:51] [SPEAKER_02]: But definitely it was right after I had started working at Blockbuster that this came out on VHS and DVD and was just breaking records for sales and stuff.
[00:05:03] [SPEAKER_02]: So I definitely owned this movie.
[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Danielle?
[00:05:07] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, I never checked to see.
[00:05:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Hold on.
[00:05:09] [SPEAKER_03]: I know what my rating is, but let me just make sure I'm not telling on myself in the wrong way.
[00:05:15] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.
[00:05:17] [SPEAKER_03]: I too have a story.
[00:05:19] [SPEAKER_03]: I think I've said it a few times on the podcast, but just as a refresher.
[00:05:23] [SPEAKER_03]: I saw this movie with a girl I was friends with in high school.
[00:05:26] [SPEAKER_03]: And I'm now learning more and more that apparently I have some sort of level of ADHD.
[00:05:36] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not really sure what it is, but I do this thing wherever I'm watching.
[00:05:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Whenever I'm watching like a murder mystery or anything where there is something to be solved, baby girl is trying to figure it out.
[00:05:49] [SPEAKER_03]: And especially I think because I've watched so many movies and TV shows that it's rare at this point for anything to shock me.
[00:05:58] [SPEAKER_03]: So I think one of the first lessons about like how my brain works was this movie.
[00:06:03] [SPEAKER_03]: So we went to go see it.
[00:06:05] [SPEAKER_03]: No big problem.
[00:06:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Jackie already knows a bitch be talking to her in a movie, whether she wants to or not.
[00:06:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Can't help it sometimes.
[00:06:13] [SPEAKER_03]: So the moment where Bruce Willis's character reaches out for his wife when they're at the restaurant to pay for the check.
[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_03]: I was like, he dead.
[00:06:25] [SPEAKER_03]: That's it.
[00:06:27] [SPEAKER_03]: That's what I said.
[00:06:28] [SPEAKER_03]: My friend was lambed.
[00:06:30] [SPEAKER_03]: She was so mad.
[00:06:31] [SPEAKER_03]: I think we stopped being friends because of that incident.
[00:06:35] [SPEAKER_03]: And I just did.
[00:06:37] [SPEAKER_03]: I didn't know I was going to be right.
[00:06:38] [SPEAKER_03]: I should have kept it in.
[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_03]: But like it was like almost like an intrusive thought.
[00:06:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Like I had to say it.
[00:06:43] [SPEAKER_03]: So just her response and the experience and tension probably made me not love the movie.
[00:06:49] [SPEAKER_03]: But also because I figured it out so quickly that watching the rest of the movie was just like kind of boring for me at that point.
[00:06:59] [SPEAKER_03]: So I do not own it.
[00:07:01] [SPEAKER_03]: And I don't think I've seen the movie in its totality until like over again.
[00:07:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Not till last night.
[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_03]: It just never seemed like something I would want to watch over and over again.
[00:07:16] [SPEAKER_03]: With that said, I guess it's your day rent to day rental.
[00:07:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
[00:07:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Because I don't hate it.
[00:07:22] [SPEAKER_03]: And we all know this is the fucking best thing that M nights made.
[00:07:27] [SPEAKER_03]: This?
[00:07:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:07:29] [SPEAKER_03]: That the precedent.
[00:07:29] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like.
[00:07:31] [SPEAKER_04]: It's kind of unfortunate that this was like his first big movie and that people expect going forward you're going to have some kind of a twist.
[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_04]: And how he, I mean, in a lot of his films he still tries to incorporate some kind of like fun reveal at the end.
[00:07:46] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:07:47] [SPEAKER_04]: But now that's what people's like purpose is going in.
[00:07:50] [SPEAKER_04]: They're like trying to Rubik's Cube it ahead of time to like, oh, that's it.
[00:07:54] [SPEAKER_04]: This is it.
[00:07:55] [SPEAKER_04]: This is the twist.
[00:07:56] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
[00:07:56] [SPEAKER_04]: But also just like the writing quality.
[00:07:59] [SPEAKER_04]: Like storyline aside, like you can have a great idea for a story or a movie.
[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_04]: But like if your script sucks or if your characters are not, like the happening is like one of the most funniest comedic movies of all time.
[00:08:12] [SPEAKER_04]: And it's not supposed to be.
[00:08:14] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:08:14] [SPEAKER_04]: No.
[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_03]: This movie, after rewatching it, just gives me vibes of like, you know, people read To Kill a Mockingbird and wonder if Harper Lee wrote it.
[00:08:26] [SPEAKER_03]: They talk about if Truman Capote actually wrote it or helped her with it.
[00:08:30] [SPEAKER_03]: It's that kind of vibe.
[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not saying that she did it.
[00:08:33] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm just saying it's like you look at it and then you look at the other materials and you're like, did you make a deal?
[00:08:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, what is this?
[00:08:43] [SPEAKER_03]: What's going on?
[00:08:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Because I haven't felt him get to this level ever again.
[00:08:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Let's dive into this movie's budget.
[00:08:50] [SPEAKER_03]: So the movie had a budget of $40 million, which I was like, okay.
[00:08:58] [SPEAKER_03]: The way that M. Night talks about this kind of gives indie vibes sometimes.
[00:09:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Like it was a sleeper hit.
[00:09:04] [SPEAKER_03]: So I was like, that's a pretty good hefty budget.
[00:09:07] [SPEAKER_03]: So I was kind of surprised by that.
[00:09:10] [SPEAKER_03]: But listen, like $672.8 million worldwide.
[00:09:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Like that is mind boggling.
[00:09:20] [SPEAKER_02]: If they hadn't had a Star Wars come out that year, like Leaps and Bounds would have been the largest grossing movie.
[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Facts.
[00:09:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Because like I said, it was a sleeper hit.
[00:09:31] [SPEAKER_03]: And it surpassed expectations and became one of the highest grossing films of 1999.
[00:09:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Which we've talked about this plenty of times that 1999 was that girl.
[00:09:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Like the movies that came out that year were insane.
[00:09:45] [SPEAKER_03]: And it was the second highest grossing film of that year, only behind Star Wars Episode I, The Phantom Menace.
[00:09:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Which still to this day perplexed how they got us all to go see that shit.
[00:09:56] [SPEAKER_03]: But what I find the most interesting about this whole thing was that David Vogel, the then president of production of Walt Disney Studios.
[00:10:06] [SPEAKER_03]: He read Shyamalan's spec script and loved it.
[00:10:10] [SPEAKER_03]: And without obtaining corporate approval, he bought the rights despite the price of it being $3 million and the stipulation that Shyamalan could direct the film.
[00:10:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Which, you know, unheard of.
[00:10:24] [SPEAKER_03]: But he did it.
[00:10:27] [SPEAKER_03]: And Disney said a word?
[00:10:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Dismissed.
[00:10:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Fired.
[00:10:32] [SPEAKER_03]: So he was dismissed from his position at the studio.
[00:10:37] [SPEAKER_03]: And then he left the company shortly thereafter.
[00:10:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Disney then sold the production rights to Spyglass Entertainment while retaining the distribution rights and 12.5 of the film's box office takings.
[00:10:51] [SPEAKER_03]: I would say this whole thing was a really fucking stupid move on Disney.
[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_03]: But I get it because here you have a director, writer, a director because he had written things that did well.
[00:11:03] [SPEAKER_03]: But a director that hadn't had big movies or anything pop off for him.
[00:11:10] [SPEAKER_03]: And he's a man of color.
[00:11:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, I'm sure Disney was like, we don't, we're just gonna bite this.
[00:11:17] [SPEAKER_03]: We'll lose the money, whatever.
[00:11:19] [SPEAKER_03]: But I think later they went and tried to get the distribution rights for some of the foreign distribution because it did so well here.
[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_03]: So they fucked up.
[00:11:30] [SPEAKER_03]: So, Simone, do you want to read this?
[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_03]: It's your boy Lil Raj.
[00:11:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Lil Raj.
[00:11:35] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
[00:11:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, so I actually didn't look up his review ahead of time because I wasn't sure if you guys had the numbers.
[00:11:42] [SPEAKER_04]: And I wanted to try and guess to see if my guess was the same as his.
[00:11:46] [SPEAKER_04]: But if I were a betting person, I would say Lil Raj gave this movie three stars because he would have liked it for the, like, character development of it.
[00:11:57] [SPEAKER_04]: Maybe not so much.
[00:11:58] [SPEAKER_04]: I think he would have said, like, oh, yeah, the plot, like, surprised me.
[00:12:04] [SPEAKER_04]: But I could see some things.
[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_04]: But anyways, I digress.
[00:12:09] [SPEAKER_04]: Lil Raj from the Chicago Sun-Times says The Sixth Sense is a delicate, emotionally intense film.
[00:12:15] [SPEAKER_04]: And it suggests that Night Shyamalan is a natural filmmaker, someone who knows how to weave original stories out of the deep human feelings.
[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_04]: This is the kind of movie where once you understand the ending, you want to go back and watch it all over again.
[00:12:28] [SPEAKER_04]: Which I agree with.
[00:12:30] [SPEAKER_04]: You know.
[00:12:31] [SPEAKER_04]: It's a totally different experience going back and seeing it afterwards.
[00:12:34] [SPEAKER_04]: It is.
[00:12:35] [SPEAKER_03]: I think.
[00:12:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Go ahead, Danielle.
[00:12:37] [SPEAKER_03]: No, I was just like, I don't know what he, how many thumbs up.
[00:12:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, he gave it three stars.
[00:12:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, sorry.
[00:12:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, we did?
[00:12:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I had to go look it up.
[00:12:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Sorry.
[00:12:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Go ahead, Danielle.
[00:12:47] [SPEAKER_02]: I think Roger Ebert is onto something because I think aside from this, there's very little, like, human emotion in his subsequent films, which is his strong suit.
[00:13:02] [SPEAKER_02]: That's why this movie works so well.
[00:13:05] [SPEAKER_05]: Mm-hmm.
[00:13:06] [SPEAKER_02]: And so when you get into, like, and truth be told, I've never watched The Village in its entirety.
[00:13:11] [SPEAKER_02]: But I think the only thing that remotely touches on the emotion, like The Sixth Sense does, is signs.
[00:13:20] [SPEAKER_02]: And that would be my second favorite M. Night Shyamalan movie.
[00:13:23] [SPEAKER_04]: But, like, that's so true.
[00:13:25] [SPEAKER_04]: I think at the heart of this movie, it's about a single mom who's trying to, like, support her kid the best way she can.
[00:13:32] [SPEAKER_04]: A family that's dealing with grief, dealing with divorce, and wanting to support your kid but not necessarily knowing how or maybe even having the resources to do it.
[00:13:45] [SPEAKER_04]: And then you have, you know, Dr. Crowe's second storyline and all that.
[00:13:49] [SPEAKER_04]: But it's just the, I found myself, like, tearing up last night for the first time watching this movie of really, really, like, processing those emotions that the characters went through.
[00:14:01] [SPEAKER_03]: And I think it's just, and that's what I love about us doing this show because it's just such a really eye-opening activity, I guess you could say, or opportunity.
[00:14:13] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, even if we rewatch some of these movies 30 years from now, all of them might hit different because we've had different lived experiences.
[00:14:22] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, and I think I definitely, like you said, cried because I can empathize.
[00:14:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Because, you know, when I saw the mom, I saw my mom, I saw myself essentially, like, knowing that you have a child or someone you very much care about, that you're the ward of, and you feel like you know something is wrong, but there's, like, nothing you can do about it.
[00:14:46] [SPEAKER_03]: The grieving aspect of her grieving her mother.
[00:14:48] [SPEAKER_03]: I now know what that feels like, losing a parent and then all the other stresses, you know, and then going to therapy and learning that all my trauma from my childhood makes me prone to be a people pleaser.
[00:15:04] [SPEAKER_03]: And so watching him having to, like, make decisions that no child should really have to make and feel safe to, like, tell his mom, but watching her as a single mother, if you've ever had a single parent, knowing that you don't want them to worry.
[00:15:22] [SPEAKER_03]: You see them stressing, you see them going through it.
[00:15:25] [SPEAKER_03]: So it's just, like, so many layers that I did, you know, have, I didn't have when I first saw this movie.
[00:15:31] [SPEAKER_03]: So I think it was so much better to watch it this time around.
[00:15:36] [SPEAKER_02]: And from the perspective of, like, being married, like, his wife grieving and, like, watching their wedding video every night.
[00:15:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:15:46] [SPEAKER_02]: And, like, having to have dinner alone and things like that.
[00:15:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Like, it's just, it was so emotional and so heartbreaking.
[00:15:54] [SPEAKER_02]: And so, like, looking at it from that perspective, which is why you have to watch this movie a couple of times.
[00:16:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Because the first time through, you're just trying to figure out, like, what's going on.
[00:16:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.
[00:16:07] [SPEAKER_02]: And then on the rewatch, you see that, like, Cole not wanting to scare his mom.
[00:16:14] [SPEAKER_02]: And so he's taking all of this emotion that he shouldn't have to be taking and kind of bottling it up because he doesn't want to scare his mom.
[00:16:22] [SPEAKER_02]: His mom trying to reach him and she doesn't know how.
[00:16:27] [SPEAKER_02]: And then the whole grieving relationship of losing a spouse.
[00:16:32] [SPEAKER_02]: So it was just, it's a lot.
[00:16:35] [SPEAKER_02]: But, like, it's done beautifully on all aspects.
[00:16:39] [SPEAKER_04]: And we can be describing a totally different movie.
[00:16:43] [SPEAKER_04]: There's ghosts in this, too.
[00:16:45] [SPEAKER_04]: So, like, you also forget that there's, like, someone with, like, a blown out skull.
[00:16:51] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:16:51] [SPEAKER_04]: Casually strolling down your living room.
[00:16:53] [SPEAKER_04]: And it's like, oh, right, it's also a scary movie.
[00:16:55] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:16:56] [SPEAKER_04]: So incredible.
[00:16:57] [SPEAKER_04]: And that's so rare for those kinds of genres to kind of mash together and do it well.
[00:17:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:17:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:17:05] [SPEAKER_03]: I also think that it has to be said that Haley Joel Osment was robbed.
[00:17:13] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, there's this thought process in Hollywood that, you know, that these young actors are going to get another chance later on to win and they have to, you know, repay.
[00:17:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, there's so many times when people win Oscars and not because the movie they did was well, you know, received, but because it's owed to them, quote unquote.
[00:17:34] [SPEAKER_03]: And I've seen so many young, very young actors who just don't win because of that idea.
[00:17:41] [SPEAKER_03]: And he carried this movie.
[00:17:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, obviously, Bruce Willis did a great job.
[00:17:48] [SPEAKER_03]: But this kid, like, the emotions he's able to draw at, his mannerisms.
[00:17:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:17:56] [SPEAKER_03]: I really believe that him and Toni Collette are, you know, mother and child.
[00:18:01] [SPEAKER_04]: But, like, yeah, he's so believable.
[00:18:03] [SPEAKER_04]: And at first, like, I don't think he was not the first draft for this.
[00:18:08] [SPEAKER_04]: Michael Cera, I think, auditioned to be in the role.
[00:18:11] [SPEAKER_04]: And so, which, what a different movie that would have turned out to be, a different universe.
[00:18:17] [SPEAKER_04]: But I think, originally, M. Night was looking for someone that was, like, a little bit more, like, dark and brooding.
[00:18:24] [SPEAKER_04]: And he saw Haley as this, like, beautiful cherub that we saw, this precious little boy.
[00:18:30] [SPEAKER_04]: And that ended up working so well because he just constantly looked so sad and heartbroken and torn to pieces and, like, ready to cry at the drop of a hat.
[00:18:40] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, it was, you just wanted to, like, reach through the screen and, like, be like, oh, I'm sorry, let me give you a hug.
[00:18:47] Yeah.
[00:18:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, the film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay for M. Night Shyamalan, Best Supporting Actor with Haley, who didn't win, and Best Supporting Actress for Toni Collette.
[00:19:02] [SPEAKER_03]: The fact that that woman, I could go on a whole dissertation about the fact that that woman has not, like, received her Oscar yet is a fucking crime.
[00:19:12] [SPEAKER_04]: So she was our top list if we were going to go on to do a season three for Roll Call.
[00:19:17] [SPEAKER_04]: She was going to be it.
[00:19:18] [SPEAKER_04]: And so I still, I mean, I admire her work ethic, all of her films, anytime I see her.
[00:19:25] [SPEAKER_04]: I remember, like, going forward, any movie I saw, I'd be like, oh, that's the mom from Sixth Sense.
[00:19:30] [SPEAKER_04]: Like, to me, this was the first thing that I saw her in.
[00:19:32] [SPEAKER_04]: And she continues to hold her own in any kind of role that she's playing, but particularly, like, a pissed mom.
[00:19:39] [SPEAKER_03]: She's really good at that.
[00:19:41] [SPEAKER_03]: She can play anything.
[00:19:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, it's crazy.
[00:19:43] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, everyone talks about Hereditary because I've never seen it, but everyone talks about it.
[00:19:48] [SPEAKER_03]: And I first saw her on Muriel's wedding.
[00:19:51] [SPEAKER_03]: I think that was in 94.
[00:19:53] [SPEAKER_03]: And then, yeah, she's just, if you haven't watched The United States of Terra, the TV show.
[00:20:01] [SPEAKER_03]: So good.
[00:20:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Do yourself a service and watch that show.
[00:20:04] [SPEAKER_03]: So good.
[00:20:05] [SPEAKER_03]: But before we get into cast and crew, let's hear a message from our pod pals.
[00:20:15] [SPEAKER_00]: Mitra, if you could describe our show in one word, what would it be?
[00:20:18] [SPEAKER_00]: Unrefined.
[00:20:19] [SPEAKER_00]: That's the name of our podcast.
[00:20:21] [SPEAKER_00]: So that's perfect.
[00:20:23] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm BJ, and that's Mitra, and we have a podcast called Unrefined.
[00:20:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Why don't you tell the people what it's about, Mitra?
[00:20:30] [SPEAKER_01]: It's about paranormal conspiracies and just random silliness sometimes.
[00:20:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's true.
[00:20:36] [SPEAKER_00]: Random silliness is what we do best.
[00:20:37] [SPEAKER_00]: But for real, guys, we do like to talk about the paranormal, creepy, spooky things that go bump in the night.
[00:20:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Plus, we like to get into some conspiracies every once in a while as well.
[00:20:47] [SPEAKER_01]: We have new episodes premiering every Monday and Wednesday and special strange stories on Friday.
[00:20:54] [SPEAKER_00]: You can get those episodes wherever you download your favorite podcasts.
[00:20:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Catch us on Paranormal TV, Fridays, 9 p.m. Eastern.
[00:21:05] [SPEAKER_03]: All right, Jackie, what do we got for cast and crew?
[00:21:08] [SPEAKER_02]: So Bruce Willis was originally supposed to star in another movie under his contract with Disney,
[00:21:13] [SPEAKER_02]: but after that project fell through, he agreed to star in The Sixth Sense instead,
[00:21:18] [SPEAKER_02]: which is interesting because M. Night Shyamalan said he wrote this with Bruce Willis in mind.
[00:21:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, wow.
[00:21:25] [SPEAKER_02]: So I don't know if it was a happy coincidence.
[00:21:28] [SPEAKER_02]: And is that why he did The Kid?
[00:21:31] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
[00:21:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Because you have that weird contract with Disney.
[00:21:34] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:21:35] [SPEAKER_03]: It 100% is.
[00:21:38] [SPEAKER_03]: And I love that, you know, this movie kicked off a partnership with him because then they did Unbreakable.
[00:21:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Was he, I don't know if he was in Glass.
[00:21:47] [SPEAKER_03]: I think he was in Glass, which was a sequel.
[00:21:50] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't think he, I didn't see Split.
[00:21:53] [SPEAKER_03]: I only saw parts of it.
[00:21:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Is Split the, no, Split is separate.
[00:21:59] [SPEAKER_03]: And then there's one where they all come together.
[00:22:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Is it shattered?
[00:22:02] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.
[00:22:02] [SPEAKER_02]: I could be making that up.
[00:22:04] [SPEAKER_03]: It sounds right.
[00:22:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Haley Joel Osment was the only young actor to wear a tie to his audition.
[00:22:11] [SPEAKER_03]: When asked why, he said, I thought you should look nice when you go to work.
[00:22:16] [SPEAKER_03]: This attention to detail impressed M. Night Shyamalan and played a part in his casting.
[00:22:25] [SPEAKER_02]: So sweet.
[00:22:25] [SPEAKER_02]: I just keep going back to like how he was in The Boys for like an episode.
[00:22:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Right.
[00:22:31] [SPEAKER_03]: I remember.
[00:22:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:22:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Haley Joel?
[00:22:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:22:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh.
[00:22:36] [SPEAKER_04]: He also recently was in What We Do in the Shadows.
[00:22:40] [SPEAKER_04]: The, it's on Hulu.
[00:22:42] [SPEAKER_04]: It's like about vampires.
[00:22:43] [SPEAKER_04]: It's like a mockumentary style show about like a bunch of vampires living together.
[00:22:46] [SPEAKER_04]: But he like was hired on as like a, they call them familiars, but they were like taking
[00:22:51] [SPEAKER_04]: care of the house and everything.
[00:22:54] [SPEAKER_04]: So that was really funny.
[00:22:56] [SPEAKER_04]: I was like glad to see that he's like still doing stuff.
[00:22:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:23:00] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:23:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Shyamalan has a cameo in the movie as Dr. Hill, the doctor who examines Cole after he
[00:23:06] [SPEAKER_02]: has his seizure.
[00:23:09] [SPEAKER_03]: And Willis deliberately toned down his acting.
[00:23:13] [SPEAKER_03]: He was speaking in, I guess, a lower, softer voice to help maintain the film's eerie and subdued
[00:23:19] [SPEAKER_03]: atmosphere.
[00:23:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I had to put on the goddamn cashes.
[00:23:23] [SPEAKER_03]: I was like, huh?
[00:23:24] [SPEAKER_03]: What'd you say?
[00:23:27] [SPEAKER_02]: So soft.
[00:23:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Marissa Tomei was considered for the role of Lynn Sear, which ended up going to Toni Collette,
[00:23:34] [SPEAKER_02]: who is Australian, but nailed a perfect Philadelphia accent for her role as Cole's mom.
[00:23:40] [SPEAKER_02]: She received a lot of praise for her performance, particularly for her emotional range in the
[00:23:46] [SPEAKER_02]: scene where Cole reveals his secret.
[00:23:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, she was great in that.
[00:23:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Do you want to do the Michael Cera one?
[00:23:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Because you said that he auditioned, but it was actually Liam Aiken that got the role.
[00:24:00] [SPEAKER_03]: If you want to.
[00:24:00] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, okay.
[00:24:02] [SPEAKER_04]: As I said earlier, Michael Cera auditioned for the role of Cole Sear and Liam Aiken was
[00:24:07] [SPEAKER_04]: the one who was ended up being offered the role, but turned it down, which left the door open.
[00:24:13] [SPEAKER_04]: I also wonder what you said about since he wore a tie to the audition, if they just kept that
[00:24:17] [SPEAKER_04]: as part of his character, like to have a fun little quirk that he, I know he goes to like
[00:24:21] [SPEAKER_04]: a school that has like, it looks like a uniformed school.
[00:24:25] [SPEAKER_04]: So it looks like it was maybe part of it, but I liked that he kind of always had like a
[00:24:29] [SPEAKER_04]: little fun accessory.
[00:24:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:24:32] [SPEAKER_03]: It's giving very much Sheldon.
[00:24:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
[00:24:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Big Bang or the young Sheldon.
[00:24:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Marissa Tomei was considered for the role of Lynn Sear.
[00:24:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, honestly, I can't see anybody else besides Toni Collette, but I think Marissa Tomei would
[00:24:45] [SPEAKER_03]: have done great.
[00:24:46] [SPEAKER_03]: But still, this was Toni's to lose, essentially.
[00:24:50] [SPEAKER_02]: And for us elder millennials, that first scene where you're like, is that Donnie from NKOTB?
[00:25:00] [SPEAKER_02]: Is that Donnie Walbert?
[00:25:02] [SPEAKER_02]: I was shook it.
[00:25:04] [SPEAKER_02]: He played the disturbed former patient, Vincent Gray, and he actually lost 43 pounds for his
[00:25:12] [SPEAKER_02]: role.
[00:25:13] [SPEAKER_02]: His intense transformation made his performance particularly haunting and unrecognizable from
[00:25:20] [SPEAKER_02]: his previous roles.
[00:25:22] [SPEAKER_02]: He did.
[00:25:24] [SPEAKER_02]: He ate that scene.
[00:25:26] [SPEAKER_04]: He was one of the scariest things of this whole movie.
[00:25:29] [SPEAKER_04]: And only what, like two to three minutes of screen time?
[00:25:32] [SPEAKER_04]: So, like, he went through a major transformation.
[00:25:35] [SPEAKER_04]: I always, like, I always find it very fascinating when actors do that.
[00:25:41] [SPEAKER_04]: And I know it can be really dangerous and a very controversial choice, especially for the
[00:25:46] [SPEAKER_04]: doctors that, like, work with them to essentially become malnourished over time.
[00:25:50] [SPEAKER_04]: But that character, I put down, like, is this disheveled, decrepit Donnie Wahlberg in his
[00:25:58] [SPEAKER_04]: tighty-whities, like, the scariest thing of this movie?
[00:26:00] [SPEAKER_04]: It's a strong start.
[00:26:02] [SPEAKER_04]: I'll tell you that.
[00:26:04] [SPEAKER_04]: I would not be okay if I, like, walked home and he was in my house.
[00:26:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:26:10] [SPEAKER_03]: That would, I think the breaking and entry part scares me more now as an adult than it
[00:26:14] [SPEAKER_03]: did when I was younger.
[00:26:16] [SPEAKER_03]: But, and it was also his idea to be stripped down in his underwear.
[00:26:21] [SPEAKER_03]: So, I think that works.
[00:26:23] [SPEAKER_04]: He's like, I want the voyeurism.
[00:26:24] [SPEAKER_04]: I want people to see me.
[00:26:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, yeah.
[00:26:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Also, because, like, when he's naked, you're seeing, like, with him just in his underwear,
[00:26:31] [SPEAKER_03]: you see how, like, small he looks.
[00:26:35] [SPEAKER_03]: And we all know him.
[00:26:37] [SPEAKER_04]: He looks like a child with, like, a man's face.
[00:26:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:26:40] [SPEAKER_04]: It was crazy.
[00:26:40] [SPEAKER_03]: It was really creepy.
[00:26:43] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.
[00:26:44] [SPEAKER_03]: So.
[00:26:45] [SPEAKER_02]: You ready?
[00:26:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:26:46] [SPEAKER_03]: I guess so.
[00:26:48] [SPEAKER_02]: My first note is the credits are taking forever.
[00:26:52] [SPEAKER_02]: They sure did.
[00:26:53] [SPEAKER_04]: But the credits have one of my favorite things about this movie, which is a good old fashioned
[00:26:58] [SPEAKER_04]: creepy violin jump scare.
[00:27:01] [SPEAKER_04]: The soundtrack to this movie is great.
[00:27:04] [SPEAKER_04]: But I think what really provides that, like, jolting aspect of a jump scare scene is the
[00:27:11] [SPEAKER_04]: music that pairs with it.
[00:27:13] [SPEAKER_04]: And so when you have the, me and Kevin kept on trying to replicate the noise last night.
[00:27:19] [SPEAKER_04]: But it's like a, like, the violin just goes.
[00:27:23] [SPEAKER_04]: But that's when, like, the title credit scrolls across.
[00:27:26] [SPEAKER_04]: And I'll be, damn, that noise pops up, like, periodically throughout the film.
[00:27:30] [SPEAKER_04]: And it, like, gets you every time.
[00:27:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
[00:27:33] [SPEAKER_03]: I agree.
[00:27:34] [SPEAKER_03]: The music really did play a huge part.
[00:27:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Because there's so many quiet moments.
[00:27:39] [SPEAKER_03]: And then these sharp sounds that you're like.
[00:27:44] [SPEAKER_02]: And, like, you know what's about ghosts, but you don't know when they're going to show
[00:27:47] [SPEAKER_02]: up.
[00:27:48] [SPEAKER_02]: So, like, every time that sound plays, you're like, oh, what are they?
[00:27:53] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
[00:27:53] [SPEAKER_02]: I also love that the soundtrack spoils the movie.
[00:27:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Because the last track is titled Malcolm's Dead.
[00:28:04] [SPEAKER_03]: But we don't know.
[00:28:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, I guess if you saw that.
[00:28:08] [SPEAKER_03]: And if this was, if this movie came out now, it would have never survived.
[00:28:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, we would have not known that's the first day.
[00:28:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Although, I will say the spoilers for Deadpool, like, people kept it pretty secret.
[00:28:21] [SPEAKER_02]: At least for, like, the first week or so.
[00:28:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:28:24] [SPEAKER_02]: To get people to go see it and stuff.
[00:28:27] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:28:27] [SPEAKER_04]: If I really like something, I will see it within the first three days.
[00:28:30] [SPEAKER_04]: I feel like these days there's nothing sacred anymore in terms of, like, content creation.
[00:28:35] [SPEAKER_04]: And I'm going to throw Disney content creators under the bus for a second because they are
[00:28:39] [SPEAKER_04]: super guilty of doing this.
[00:28:40] [SPEAKER_04]: We are now at the point where people go to the theater and are, like, recording the movie.
[00:28:45] [SPEAKER_04]: And then the next day they're like, here are my top ten favorite lines from Inside Out 2.
[00:28:49] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm like, dude, give me a second.
[00:28:51] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:28:51] [SPEAKER_04]: And they're like, or they're doing, like, this is my reaction watching the movie.
[00:28:55] [SPEAKER_04]: It's intense and so silly.
[00:28:58] [SPEAKER_04]: But, yeah, I digress.
[00:28:59] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes, I feel like the image, though, of someone going in 1999 to, like, a Sam Goody or a Suncoast
[00:29:06] [SPEAKER_04]: or a Tower Records to be like, I really want this album and have it on, like, a CD or, like,
[00:29:14] [SPEAKER_03]: a cassette maybe.
[00:29:17] [SPEAKER_03]: But, like, from the perspective, like, it could have been that he dies, not that he was been dead the whole time.
[00:29:23] [SPEAKER_03]: So.
[00:29:25] [SPEAKER_03]: That's true.
[00:29:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Kind of.
[00:29:27] [SPEAKER_03]: But I see, like, I feel like M. Night Shyamalan making this movie was fucking stressed.
[00:29:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay?
[00:29:35] [SPEAKER_03]: The man was stressed because he, they tried so hard to, like, make sure that the cat didn't get out of the bag that nobody knew about this, like, surprise twist.
[00:29:45] [SPEAKER_03]: And then, guess what happens to him?
[00:29:49] [SPEAKER_03]: The Blair Witch Project comes out.
[00:29:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Right?
[00:29:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, a week before The Sixth Sense.
[00:29:55] [SPEAKER_03]: And so, in his mind, he's thinking, okay, there hasn't been a genre-twisting, like, scary movie out in a long time.
[00:30:05] [SPEAKER_03]: There really hasn't.
[00:30:06] [SPEAKER_03]: And at this time, we have the upswing of the slashers, but this is going back to, like, the roots of a scary movie.
[00:30:13] [SPEAKER_03]: So, just a week before The Sixth Sense is released, the Blair Witch smashed box office records with a very small budget.
[00:30:23] [SPEAKER_03]: And he was like, oh, man, I thought we're never going to get any box office.
[00:30:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, my last two movies, nobody on the planet saw them.
[00:30:31] [SPEAKER_03]: I thought, I can't believe it's happening again.
[00:30:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, stressed.
[00:30:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay?
[00:30:38] [SPEAKER_03]: And sure, it didn't help that he knew that Disney execs weren't really supportive, you know, or thinking that it had a chance.
[00:30:47] [SPEAKER_03]: So, for M. Night.
[00:30:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Going through it.
[00:30:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:30:52] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, at least there were two, like, very different movies advertised very differently.
[00:30:57] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:30:59] [SPEAKER_02]: At least everything worked out for you, M. Night.
[00:31:03] [SPEAKER_03]: For that movie.
[00:31:04] [SPEAKER_03]: For this movie.
[00:31:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes, for this movie.
[00:31:06] [SPEAKER_03]: But it's been a real battle.
[00:31:08] [SPEAKER_03]: That poor man.
[00:31:09] [SPEAKER_03]: But also, motherfucker, why?
[00:31:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Avatar The Last Airbender never should have touched it.
[00:31:15] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know what the fuck happened.
[00:31:19] [SPEAKER_03]: But if I see you in the streets, I'm going to slap the shit out of you.
[00:31:22] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't care.
[00:31:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Sorry.
[00:31:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Not sorry.
[00:31:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Unless you want to be on the show, and I, you know, I think you're one of the greatest directors of our generation.
[00:31:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Also, did not realize that Kathleen Kennedy was attached to this movie.
[00:31:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, she was probably at Disney at that time.
[00:31:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:31:40] [SPEAKER_02]: So, that makes sense.
[00:31:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Like, it's just two and two, and then I pointed it out, and then Ken got on his high horse about how he hates Kathleen Kennedy.
[00:31:48] [SPEAKER_02]: So, it was a whole thing.
[00:31:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, the Star Wars boys really don't like her.
[00:31:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Mm-mm.
[00:31:54] [SPEAKER_02]: So, the movie starts out, they are celebrating that Malcolm has won this prestigious award from the city of Philadelphia for his work in child psychology.
[00:32:05] [SPEAKER_02]: And so, they're celebrating with wine, talking about the price of the frame, you know, just couple shit.
[00:32:15] [SPEAKER_04]: Getting a little saucy.
[00:32:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Hey.
[00:32:18] [SPEAKER_02]: So, they head upstairs, and they hear something, like a glass, like something's breaking.
[00:32:26] [SPEAKER_02]: And so, they go upstairs into their bedroom, and this is where we get Donnie Wahlberg and his tighty-whities.
[00:32:31] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's just, he's in distress, and he's kind of talking in circles, and we kind of glean that Malcolm was his psychiatrist when he was a child.
[00:32:47] [SPEAKER_02]: And he just talks about how, like, he didn't really help him.
[00:32:51] [SPEAKER_02]: And then, he shoots Malcolm in the sea nymphs.
[00:32:57] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:32:57] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:32:58] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:32:58] [SPEAKER_04]: This movie started off super strong.
[00:33:00] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:33:00] [SPEAKER_04]: And I think one of the things that Vincent says that's so haunting is, he asked the question, do you know why you're afraid when you're alone?
[00:33:10] [SPEAKER_04]: And if, that's a great icebreaker question.
[00:33:13] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:33:14] [SPEAKER_04]: I think to ask for any group of people.
[00:33:16] [SPEAKER_04]: But, I mean, gosh, yeah, this movie starts off so strong where you have, like, your main protagonist going through something really scary and traumatic.
[00:33:23] [SPEAKER_04]: And you're, like, led to believe that he survives, but his, like, confidence now is shaken and that he, like, okay, am I still, like, a good doctor?
[00:33:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Do I still have what it takes?
[00:33:33] [SPEAKER_04]: Can I still help kids?
[00:33:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:33:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Honestly, I was just, like, why is no one?
[00:33:39] [SPEAKER_03]: I remember watching the first time thinking, oh, so we just glossing over that this motherfucker got shot?
[00:33:45] [SPEAKER_03]: We just continuing on.
[00:33:47] [SPEAKER_03]: We are not talking about it.
[00:33:48] [SPEAKER_03]: And I question the fact that, like, because his wife seems so distant and it seems like they're fighting.
[00:33:56] [SPEAKER_03]: And I'm, like, I don't understand.
[00:33:58] [SPEAKER_03]: You just got shot.
[00:33:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:34:01] [SPEAKER_03]: And, you know, you did it protecting her.
[00:34:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, it's not, Matt's not adding up.
[00:34:05] [SPEAKER_03]: What's going on?
[00:34:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Did we miss something?
[00:34:07] [SPEAKER_03]: So I was, like, you know what?
[00:34:09] [SPEAKER_03]: He did.
[00:34:11] [SPEAKER_02]: After this scene, Ken turned to me and shed me his arm and said, goosebumps everywhere.
[00:34:17] [SPEAKER_02]: So starting off real strong with the fear of success.
[00:34:23] [SPEAKER_02]: And so it's the next fall.
[00:34:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Malcolm scene's kind of downtrodden.
[00:34:28] [SPEAKER_02]: He's sitting on a bench kind of observing Cole from afar and just kind of seeing what he does.
[00:34:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Cole ends up going into this church behind me.
[00:34:39] [SPEAKER_02]: And red is a recurring symbol throughout the film representing the connection between the living and the dead.
[00:34:46] [SPEAKER_02]: It's used sparingly and only to highlight key moments and objects that signal the presence of the supernatural.
[00:34:52] [SPEAKER_02]: So that was another thing that, like, on rewatch, like, you start taking note of any time you see the color red.
[00:35:00] [SPEAKER_02]: And M. Night was very diligent in ensuring that red was nowhere else in the movie to make those pops of color stand out.
[00:35:11] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, everything else was pretty muted.
[00:35:14] [SPEAKER_04]: And so, like, those instances and bursts of red were...
[00:35:17] [SPEAKER_04]: And that was something that I actually took notice of for the first time that I, like, brought out my phone and was like, is red symbolism in success?
[00:35:27] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, it sure is.
[00:35:29] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:35:33] [SPEAKER_03]: One of the things that it finally clicked for me was one of the reasons that not just because...
[00:35:40] [SPEAKER_03]: What's the little boy's name again?
[00:35:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Cole.
[00:35:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Not because Cole can see ghosts, just because he can see ghosts.
[00:35:46] [SPEAKER_03]: But I also think that he must...
[00:35:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Cole must have been scheduled to be on his docket as a patient.
[00:35:54] [SPEAKER_05]: Mm-hmm.
[00:35:54] [SPEAKER_03]: And it's, like, his unfinished business.
[00:35:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, one of the reasons, not just his wife, but, like, because he's so dedicated to helping children, it's almost like he feels bad that his death is preventing him helping this child.
[00:36:08] [SPEAKER_03]: And so I think that's also another reason.
[00:36:11] [SPEAKER_03]: And maybe that was, like, everyone understood that already, but that was, like, one of my thoughts about...
[00:36:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Well, and I think it was to right the wrong that happened in Vincent where he didn't really believe him.
[00:36:22] [SPEAKER_02]: And so kind of steer the ship in the right direction with Cole and get him to a place where he can utilize his gift for good and not be afraid of it.
[00:36:33] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:36:34] [SPEAKER_04]: Because later we find out Vincent was, like, struggling with the same issue or similar issue, right?
[00:36:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Like, when he's listening to the tape recording.
[00:36:42] [SPEAKER_04]: So, yeah.
[00:36:43] [SPEAKER_04]: I think that's so true that that's his unfinished business is working with Cole.
[00:36:49] [SPEAKER_02]: I love that we use Casper verbiage in the same issue.
[00:36:56] [SPEAKER_02]: It's a technical term now.
[00:36:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, I think it is.
[00:36:59] [SPEAKER_03]: I think that they use that in a lot of, like, supernatural, especially ghost stuff.
[00:37:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, charmed, Buffy the Vampire's Light.
[00:37:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, they've all used that verbiage.
[00:37:11] [SPEAKER_03]: So I don't think it's too odd.
[00:37:12] [SPEAKER_02]: And then both Vincent and Cole have, like, a little white patch of hair on the side of their head, which kind of symbolizes that they've been touched by ghosts.
[00:37:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah.
[00:37:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Bringing it all together.
[00:37:28] Okay.
[00:37:31] [SPEAKER_02]: So Cole is in the church kind of playing with his little tin soldiers and stuff.
[00:37:35] [SPEAKER_02]: And he keeps repeating a Latin phrase over and over again.
[00:37:39] [SPEAKER_02]: So Malcolm goes.
[00:37:40] [SPEAKER_02]: He can't get into his basement for some reason.
[00:37:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Like, every time he goes to turn the red doorknob, it's not opening for him.
[00:37:51] [SPEAKER_02]: But he's able somehow to get to his stuff, which is in the wine cellar.
[00:37:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Like, his desk and all his books.
[00:38:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Also foreshadowing of, like, his...
[00:38:04] [SPEAKER_04]: They only see what they want to see.
[00:38:06] [SPEAKER_02]: They only see what they want to see.
[00:38:07] [SPEAKER_02]: And, like, his shit wouldn't have been down in the wine cellar.
[00:38:12] [SPEAKER_02]: It would have been moved there after he was dead.
[00:38:16] [SPEAKER_02]: But he, like, dusts off his little Latin dictionary and looks up the phrase, which I didn't write down.
[00:38:24] [SPEAKER_04]: But I think it translates to, like, oh, Lord, I cry out to thee or something like that.
[00:38:29] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:38:29] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:38:29] [SPEAKER_02]: And so it's like, okay, where is this kid getting, like, why is this kid speaking in loud?
[00:38:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.
[00:38:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Then is the breakfast scene, which is very poltergeisty.
[00:38:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
[00:38:42] [SPEAKER_04]: We actually have a term in my house called sick sensing the cabinets.
[00:38:48] [SPEAKER_04]: That actually came from a roommate that I had back when I was doing the Disney College program so many, many years ago.
[00:38:56] [SPEAKER_04]: But I think similar to you, Danielle, there's a touch of something there that's been laying dormant and undiagnosed for many years.
[00:39:05] [SPEAKER_04]: And one of those things for me is when I'm putting stuff away or even getting things, I don't close cabinet doors.
[00:39:11] [SPEAKER_04]: And so, or if I'm, like, unloading the dishwasher, I have all the cabinets open so that I can just, like, you know, put things go as I pull out.
[00:39:20] [SPEAKER_04]: I'll have, like, a system or a method.
[00:39:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Or, like, I don't start in one place and then go to the other.
[00:39:24] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm just like, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep.
[00:39:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Right.
[00:39:25] [SPEAKER_04]: And so I think one of the times I was in the kitchen, I had, like, opened up all these cabinets and was doing what I needed to do.
[00:39:33] [SPEAKER_04]: And one of my roommates who's from New Jersey was just like, why does it look like the goddamn sixth sense in here?
[00:39:39] [SPEAKER_04]: Why are all these cabinets open?
[00:39:40] [SPEAKER_04]: And she was like, oh, man.
[00:39:44] [SPEAKER_04]: And so now it's, like, if I forget to do it, Kevin will be like, oh, we're sixth sense-ing the cabinets today.
[00:39:51] [SPEAKER_03]: No.
[00:39:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that scene is so creepy because it happens so quickly.
[00:39:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
[00:39:57] [SPEAKER_03]: And you could tell Cole has not moved from where he's sitting.
[00:40:00] [SPEAKER_03]: And so, like, part of me, because I'm just so paranoid that there is shit, otherworldly stuff around, that's the first thing I would have thought is there's some motherfucking ghosts in here.
[00:40:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:40:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Mm-hmm.
[00:40:12] [SPEAKER_03]: And I kind of think you feel it.
[00:40:14] [SPEAKER_03]: I feel like there's a different feeling that you have when you're in a place that has ghosts.
[00:40:21] [SPEAKER_03]: And then the-
[00:40:22] [SPEAKER_03]: You have to feel that.
[00:40:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:40:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Poor Cole can't even be safe in his own home.
[00:40:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Like, I get the angry mom that, like, she may have lived in that apartment before they did.
[00:40:36] [SPEAKER_02]: But, like, goes just be coming to find them.
[00:40:39] [SPEAKER_02]: And he has to live in his little red tent.
[00:40:40] [SPEAKER_02]: And, like, the tent isn't even safe.
[00:40:43] [SPEAKER_02]: And he has all of the religious relics he's, like, stolen in there to try and protect them.
[00:40:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Like, it's just so heartbreaking that this kid gets no semblance of peace whatsoever.
[00:40:54] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, baby, you gotta be sprinkling salt and doing all the shit and saving your apartment.
[00:41:00] [SPEAKER_02]: So, at least you're safe in your home.
[00:41:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Right.
[00:41:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:41:04] [SPEAKER_03]: There has to be some sort of rules.
[00:41:06] [SPEAKER_03]: But there are rules for the dead people in the sense that I may find it.
[00:41:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Because I thought this was really interesting.
[00:41:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Because they can travel far.
[00:41:19] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I assumed that, too, that that woman maybe had lived in that place before them.
[00:41:24] [SPEAKER_04]: But, like, all the other ghosts that pop up, I'm like, they're just seeking them out at this point.
[00:41:29] [SPEAKER_04]: This place, like, he probably hasn't had a decent night's sleep ever.
[00:41:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:41:33] [SPEAKER_03]: It's so crazy.
[00:41:36] [SPEAKER_03]: So, Shyamalan had three rules for the ghost in the movie.
[00:41:40] [SPEAKER_03]: One, they don't know that they're dead.
[00:41:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Two, like you guys said, they see what they want to see.
[00:41:47] [SPEAKER_03]: And three, they're drawn to Cole because they need his help.
[00:41:52] [SPEAKER_03]: But the fourth rule is my office hours are from 3 to 6 p.m.
[00:41:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Monday through Friday.
[00:42:00] [SPEAKER_02]: And you can't be just appearing and scaring the shit out of me puking on yourself.
[00:42:04] [SPEAKER_03]: You gotta know.
[00:42:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:42:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Let me pee in peace.
[00:42:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
[00:42:10] [SPEAKER_02]: I also, at one point, questioned if the puppy was a ghost.
[00:42:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Because no one was really interacting with him.
[00:42:19] [SPEAKER_02]: And the mom kept throwing clothes on him and stuff.
[00:42:21] [SPEAKER_02]: And Ken's like, no, the dog's dead.
[00:42:23] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, is the dog dead?
[00:42:26] [SPEAKER_02]: And it's just been living in this house forever.
[00:42:28] [SPEAKER_02]: But then the mom is, like, coaxing him out of the closet at one point.
[00:42:32] [SPEAKER_02]: And his name is Sebastian.
[00:42:34] [SPEAKER_02]: And then I felt a lot better that this poor dog isn't a dead puppy.
[00:42:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
[00:42:39] [SPEAKER_02]: That's what I worry about.
[00:42:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
[00:42:40] [SPEAKER_02]: God forbid all these dead people.
[00:42:42] [SPEAKER_03]: But the dog is dead.
[00:42:44] [SPEAKER_03]: We can't have it.
[00:42:45] [SPEAKER_03]: You lost me.
[00:42:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:42:47] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, my God.
[00:42:47] [SPEAKER_04]: Now it's Pet Sematary.
[00:42:48] [SPEAKER_04]: It's a different thing now.
[00:42:49] [SPEAKER_04]: Right?
[00:42:51] [SPEAKER_02]: A favorite of mine in the early, like, 90s.
[00:42:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Mm-hmm.
[00:42:57] [SPEAKER_02]: But I digress.
[00:42:59] [SPEAKER_02]: So Cole goes to school.
[00:43:00] [SPEAKER_02]: He, I don't know how he convinces the kid with the cough syrup commercial to, like,
[00:43:05] [SPEAKER_02]: pretend to be his friend because he doesn't have any money to pay him.
[00:43:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Maybe one of the ghosts told him a secret or something.
[00:43:13] [SPEAKER_03]: I, I'm not really sure.
[00:43:15] [SPEAKER_03]: But the kid is an asshole.
[00:43:18] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
[00:43:18] [SPEAKER_04]: Tommy Tomasino can Tommy Tomas suck my dick.
[00:43:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
[00:43:22] [SPEAKER_04]: This kid was a bully.
[00:43:23] [SPEAKER_04]: He was mean.
[00:43:24] [SPEAKER_04]: They pushed him into that closet.
[00:43:26] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
[00:43:27] [SPEAKER_04]: At the birthday party.
[00:43:28] [SPEAKER_04]: He was such a b-hole.
[00:43:31] [SPEAKER_04]: Ugh.
[00:43:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:43:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Like, kid, kid on kid violence always, like, makes me really upset and angry.
[00:43:35] [SPEAKER_04]: And sad.
[00:43:36] [SPEAKER_04]: But I, yeah, I don't know, like, what their relationship was.
[00:43:39] [SPEAKER_04]: Or he was just, like, maybe his mom had asked, like, called his other mom, like,
[00:43:45] [SPEAKER_04]: hey, can they walk together?
[00:43:47] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:43:47] [SPEAKER_04]: Or something like that.
[00:43:48] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know.
[00:43:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Or practicing his acting by being not a douchebag.
[00:43:53] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
[00:43:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:43:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Not sure.
[00:43:55] [SPEAKER_03]: But the mom knew that he was bullying him.
[00:43:57] [SPEAKER_03]: So something must have happened.
[00:43:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:44:00] [SPEAKER_03]: He must have gotten in trouble.
[00:44:01] [SPEAKER_03]: And so he's trying to pretend that they're cool.
[00:44:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:44:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:44:04] [SPEAKER_02]: So Cole gets home from school.
[00:44:07] [SPEAKER_02]: And this is a scene where Malcolm and the mom are sitting in, like, armchairs next to
[00:44:14] [SPEAKER_02]: each other.
[00:44:15] [SPEAKER_02]: And so Cole walks in.
[00:44:16] [SPEAKER_02]: And the shot's set up where, like, the door's in between the two chairs.
[00:44:20] [SPEAKER_02]: And so.
[00:44:21] [SPEAKER_02]: And mom kind of gets up and does the, hey, how was school?
[00:44:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Let me go fix you a snack type thing.
[00:44:28] [SPEAKER_02]: And she leaves the room.
[00:44:31] [SPEAKER_02]: And for a while, Malcolm is talking and Cole is silent.
[00:44:37] [SPEAKER_02]: And I'm like, oh, is this like he doesn't want to talk because he doesn't want his mom
[00:44:43] [SPEAKER_02]: to hear him, like, essentially talking to himself?
[00:44:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:44:48] [SPEAKER_02]: But then he later in the scene, he starts talking to Malcolm a little bit.
[00:44:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:44:54] [SPEAKER_03]: And I think the mom is used to him talking to himself because he does it a lot.
[00:44:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, what she perceives.
[00:45:00] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:45:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:45:02] [SPEAKER_04]: Because I think he had said something, whether it was within that session or a separate conversation
[00:45:07] [SPEAKER_04]: later, but he was like, he was worried that, like, his mom, we all know, like, do you think
[00:45:13] [SPEAKER_04]: badly of me?
[00:45:14] [SPEAKER_04]: Are you afraid of me?
[00:45:14] [SPEAKER_04]: Are you mad at me?
[00:45:16] [SPEAKER_04]: Like, is that such a typical, like, people pleaser, like, and wanting to, like, have that
[00:45:23] [SPEAKER_04]: close relationship with your parent, but you're, like, struggling with this big thing, right?
[00:45:27] [SPEAKER_04]: So I think he was so concerned of his mom, like, thinking so badly of him.
[00:45:32] [SPEAKER_04]: But again, like, as viewers watching it that first time through, you think, oh, she just
[00:45:38] [SPEAKER_04]: had, like, a preliminary, like, one-on-one session with him and he, like, knows about him
[00:45:45] [SPEAKER_04]: or whatever.
[00:45:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Everyone in his life, including his teacher at one point, calls him a freak.
[00:45:51] [SPEAKER_02]: And I think he just, he doesn't want his mom to think that of him.
[00:45:55] [SPEAKER_02]: So he tries to protect her at all costs.
[00:45:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:45:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, she's the only person he has left.
[00:46:01] [SPEAKER_03]: So you could see that desperation within him that he doesn't, and he must have abandonment
[00:46:07] [SPEAKER_03]: issues because of the dad, too.
[00:46:08] [SPEAKER_03]: So he's, like, terrified at this point that the one parent he does have may look at him
[00:46:14] [SPEAKER_03]: differently.
[00:46:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Plus his grandma just died.
[00:46:16] [SPEAKER_03]: So there's a lot at stake and he's very, very worried.
[00:46:19] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:46:20] [SPEAKER_04]: The filming in this scene is great, too.
[00:46:22] [SPEAKER_04]: I love the way that it's, like, set up, like you said, Jackie, with, like, how the camera
[00:46:26] [SPEAKER_04]: is angled in both ways.
[00:46:27] [SPEAKER_04]: But when they're playing the, like, step forward, step back game, the way that the,
[00:46:31] [SPEAKER_04]: like, room kind of, like, moves and stretches with you is so clever.
[00:46:38] [SPEAKER_05]: Definitely.
[00:46:39] [SPEAKER_02]: And then the next scene is the scene where Danielle knew she was seeing dead people.
[00:46:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:46:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Malcolm meets his wife for their anniversary dinner.
[00:46:50] [SPEAKER_02]: She seems pissed at him, won't look at him or talk to him.
[00:46:55] [SPEAKER_02]: She does glance up at him for a brief second, which I think was also very clever in kind of
[00:47:03] [SPEAKER_02]: masking the fact that, like, he wasn't really there.
[00:47:07] [SPEAKER_02]: She was just happened to glance that way.
[00:47:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:47:10] [SPEAKER_02]: But he goes to reach for the check.
[00:47:13] [SPEAKER_02]: He's late in his mind.
[00:47:15] [SPEAKER_02]: And so he thinks that's the reason why she's mad at him.
[00:47:18] [SPEAKER_02]: But she, she grabs the check first, pays, gets up and leaves.
[00:47:23] [SPEAKER_02]: She is wearing, like, a wine-colored dress in this scene.
[00:47:29] [SPEAKER_02]: And she also says happy anniversary.
[00:47:31] [SPEAKER_04]: So, like.
[00:47:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, like, very coldly.
[00:47:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:47:35] [SPEAKER_02]: And then Cole's mom is cleaning with her sporty Sony headphones.
[00:47:43] [SPEAKER_04]: God, I love that look so much.
[00:47:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Her messy buns, her little, like, in-home sweatsuit.
[00:47:49] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:47:49] [SPEAKER_04]: And the headphones are, it's such a great look.
[00:47:51] [SPEAKER_04]: Her red nails.
[00:47:53] [SPEAKER_04]: Everything Toni Collette did.
[00:47:54] [SPEAKER_04]: Like, every outfit she wore, I was like, oh, amazing.
[00:47:58] [SPEAKER_03]: What I love the most is that she's wearing a wig.
[00:48:02] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, that's right!
[00:48:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:48:04] [SPEAKER_03]: She's wearing a wig.
[00:48:06] [SPEAKER_03]: And pretty much, she did, she sent in her audition tape.
[00:48:11] [SPEAKER_03]: And she had shaved her head.
[00:48:12] [SPEAKER_03]: I guess it must have been for, like, another project.
[00:48:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Or just, I don't know, personally.
[00:48:16] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not, I'm not really sure.
[00:48:18] [SPEAKER_03]: But M. Night was, like, super scared that if the producers found out that she was, like, bald, that at the time, they wouldn't let her, like, be a part of the movie.
[00:48:30] [SPEAKER_03]: So, he didn't show them the audition tape.
[00:48:33] [SPEAKER_03]: And she had to get a wig.
[00:48:35] [SPEAKER_03]: But they didn't have a wig on set.
[00:48:37] [SPEAKER_03]: So, she brought her own wig from another movie set, which I think is, like, velvet gold mine that she was in.
[00:48:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, okay.
[00:48:47] [SPEAKER_03]: But I was like, damn, I love that wig.
[00:48:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:48:50] [SPEAKER_03]: It looked great on her.
[00:48:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Love that color.
[00:48:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:48:54] [SPEAKER_02]: So, now she's cleaning and she has this wall of, like, her baby boy.
[00:49:00] [SPEAKER_02]: But she notices there's, like, this orb cast next to him in every photo.
[00:49:11] [SPEAKER_02]: And so, she just kind of looks at the photos and kind of notes it but doesn't do much with that information.
[00:49:18] [SPEAKER_02]: But we know that he sees dead people.
[00:49:22] [SPEAKER_02]: So, we know that that's his gift.
[00:49:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, when I went on that ghost tour in New Orleans, remember I told you?
[00:49:31] [SPEAKER_03]: And we took, they told us to just take pictures wherever we went.
[00:49:34] [SPEAKER_03]: All of my pictures had fucking orbs and heads and what stuff.
[00:49:41] [SPEAKER_03]: And when I saw that scene, I was like, that's it.
[00:49:45] [SPEAKER_02]: No way.
[00:49:45] [SPEAKER_03]: That's it.
[00:49:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:49:46] [SPEAKER_03]: What kind of, was it, like, with your iPhone?
[00:49:48] [SPEAKER_03]: First of all, I'm Android all the way, baby.
[00:49:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
[00:49:52] [SPEAKER_03]: But it was, yeah, it was with my phone.
[00:49:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Like a camera phone, yeah.
[00:49:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, all of my friends, we were all taking pictures, going on this ghost tour.
[00:50:00] [SPEAKER_03]: And when we got back, we got all, you know, cuddled in the bed.
[00:50:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, let's look at our pictures.
[00:50:06] [SPEAKER_03]: And, of course, fucking ghost whisperer me has fucking orbs and shit all throughout my pictures.
[00:50:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Did you feel that energy when you walked through?
[00:50:16] [SPEAKER_03]: I was, I started getting scared and nervous in some parts and some parts not so much.
[00:50:21] [SPEAKER_05]: Mm-hmm.
[00:50:22] [SPEAKER_03]: When we did the house, like, that from American Horror Story.
[00:50:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, from Coven?
[00:50:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
[00:50:29] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, Misery.
[00:50:32] [SPEAKER_03]: What's that?
[00:50:33] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, Kathy Bates.
[00:50:34] [SPEAKER_04]: Kathy Bates' character.
[00:50:36] [SPEAKER_04]: The LaFleur family.
[00:50:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:50:38] [SPEAKER_03]: So that house that's based on that family.
[00:50:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's really bad.
[00:50:43] [SPEAKER_03]: They got kicked out of the city and ran out of the city.
[00:50:49] [SPEAKER_03]: And when they fled, people thought there was ghosts in there because they kept hearing all these noises.
[00:50:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Turns out that they just had a bunch of their slaves locked up with animal heads and stuff on them.
[00:51:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, real animals and stuff like that.
[00:51:04] [SPEAKER_03]: So when I took a picture of the front door of that house, I had orbs, but one of the orbs looked like there was cat ears.
[00:51:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Girl, fucking scared.
[00:51:16] [SPEAKER_04]: Post that slideshow, please.
[00:51:19] [SPEAKER_04]: If you feel like if it's appropriate, I would love, I want to see the orb.
[00:51:24] [SPEAKER_03]: I think I have the picture from the nuns from, I don't know if I have the other ones.
[00:51:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Because I think the phone I took the pictures on, like, it broke.
[00:51:34] [SPEAKER_03]: And I think I only had like one or two of the pictures that I maybe sent to someone or was saved in my Google Drive.
[00:51:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Creepy.
[00:51:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:51:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Anywho.
[00:51:44] [SPEAKER_03]: So she sees orbs.
[00:51:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Wasn't there something else that triggered her?
[00:51:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
[00:51:48] [SPEAKER_02]: We kind of hear voiceover of Malcolm in one of his sessions with Cole.
[00:51:53] [SPEAKER_02]: And he was like, have you ever done free association writing?
[00:51:56] [SPEAKER_02]: And she finds his free association writing where he calls them upset words.
[00:52:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Mom found my upset words and it kind of freaked her out.
[00:52:07] [SPEAKER_02]: And that was also done in red ink.
[00:52:11] [SPEAKER_03]: I thought it was armed, but now red makes sense.
[00:52:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:52:15] [SPEAKER_04]: Because I wasn't sure if that was like.
[00:52:18] [SPEAKER_04]: Him writing through the spirits, like that's what the spirits were kind of telling him to say.
[00:52:23] [SPEAKER_04]: Like if he was like visited by people who are clearly angry, right?
[00:52:27] [SPEAKER_04]: Or have like, that are upset about something.
[00:52:30] [SPEAKER_04]: But when you like pause to look at it.
[00:52:33] [SPEAKER_04]: Similarly, when going back and watching Seven.
[00:52:35] [SPEAKER_04]: Remember when we were talking about how like someone wrote in all of those freaking composition notebooks?
[00:52:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Like when you actually pause it and read some of the things that's on there, it's like.
[00:52:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Woo.
[00:52:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:52:47] [SPEAKER_03]: I wonder if the ghost actually wrote them themselves.
[00:52:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Because we do notice later that Malcolm being extremely angry because his wife looks like she's having a intimate moment with someone she works with.
[00:53:00] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:53:00] [SPEAKER_03]: That the glass breaks.
[00:53:02] [SPEAKER_03]: So you have to assume that if the ghost is very angry, they can actually make, you know, touch things.
[00:53:09] [SPEAKER_03]: They can like touch items.
[00:53:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:53:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Well, I mean, they claw at Paul when he's locked in the closet with them.
[00:53:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:53:16] [SPEAKER_02]: And like scratch him and stuff.
[00:53:18] [SPEAKER_03]: But I wasn't sure if that was possible because he just has the gift.
[00:53:21] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, like he's different.
[00:53:23] [SPEAKER_03]: But like the material things, I'm wondering if they can actually touch it if they're extremely emotional in some way.
[00:53:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:53:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:53:32] [SPEAKER_02]: So now we are in school with Cole.
[00:53:37] [SPEAKER_02]: His teacher is doing a history lesson about the building that the school is taking place in.
[00:53:43] [SPEAKER_02]: It used to be the old courthouse.
[00:53:45] [SPEAKER_02]: And Cole is trying to say, yeah, they used to hang people here.
[00:53:48] [SPEAKER_02]: And of course, the very white teacher is like, that never happened.
[00:53:52] [SPEAKER_02]: These were like people of the law.
[00:53:55] [SPEAKER_02]: And Cole's like, bitch, I see them.
[00:53:58] [SPEAKER_02]: And then it devolves into he knows a secret about his teacher.
[00:54:05] [SPEAKER_02]: He used to be bullied for his stuttering and kind of spirals and starts screaming.
[00:54:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Stuttering Stanley!
[00:54:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Stuttering Stanley!
[00:54:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Stuttering Stanley!
[00:54:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh my God.
[00:54:15] [SPEAKER_04]: But the first way that he says it, it's such a, it's such a, you're stuttering Stanley!
[00:54:22] [SPEAKER_04]: Like it's the little like comeback.
[00:54:24] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm like, you know, we don't make fun of people for that.
[00:54:28] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:54:28] [SPEAKER_04]: But I think that was a line that I would quote from time to time.
[00:54:33] [SPEAKER_04]: Like if someone was annoying me, I'd be like, you're stuttering Stanley!
[00:54:38] [SPEAKER_03]: But that teacher was shook.
[00:54:41] [SPEAKER_03]: He was shook though because he was like, how'd you find that out?
[00:54:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:54:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Who told you?
[00:54:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Who are you talking to?
[00:54:47] [SPEAKER_02]: And then it like makes him revert to stuttering.
[00:54:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
[00:54:51] [SPEAKER_02]: And that's when the teacher calls him a freak.
[00:54:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Like this poor boy can't catch a damn break.
[00:54:57] [SPEAKER_02]: So Malcolm comes home to his wife.
[00:55:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, she's in bed, but the wedding video is playing downstairs.
[00:55:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Their wedding video.
[00:55:07] [SPEAKER_02]: And then he sees that she has a prescription for Zoloft.
[00:55:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah.
[00:55:12] [SPEAKER_02]: Which is also red.
[00:55:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Mm-hmm.
[00:55:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Mm-hmm.
[00:55:16] [SPEAKER_02]: And then she like gets chilly when he goes upstairs.
[00:55:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Another indicator that ghosties are, aka it's you, Malcolm.
[00:55:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:55:26] [SPEAKER_04]: She's always like, she always has a blanket or a shawl.
[00:55:29] [SPEAKER_04]: And she'll like get all chilly when he's around.
[00:55:31] [SPEAKER_02]: And then the next scene is Cole is invited to a birthday party.
[00:55:37] [SPEAKER_02]: We see a red balloon float up to, through the spiral staircase.
[00:55:42] [SPEAKER_02]: And he hears voices from an upstairs closet.
[00:55:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Cole, being a child, goes to investigate instead of being like, I'm going to go the opposite way.
[00:55:55] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:55:55] [SPEAKER_02]: With the creepy voices.
[00:55:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Because I know ghosts attack me sometimes.
[00:55:59] [SPEAKER_02]: And then Tommy and company shove him inside closet.
[00:56:06] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's just screaming, screaming, screaming.
[00:56:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Mom is so happy.
[00:56:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Cole's mom is so happy that he's invited to this birthday party.
[00:56:13] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
[00:56:14] [SPEAKER_02]: And is included.
[00:56:16] [SPEAKER_02]: And then finds her child locked in a closet she can't get into.
[00:56:21] [SPEAKER_02]: And everyone is just staring at her.
[00:56:23] [SPEAKER_04]: They're just staring.
[00:56:24] [SPEAKER_04]: No one's helping.
[00:56:25] [SPEAKER_04]: There's no such an urgency.
[00:56:26] [SPEAKER_04]: This scene is actually really traumatic and kind of like hard to watch.
[00:56:30] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
[00:56:31] [SPEAKER_04]: And she's like.
[00:56:32] [SPEAKER_04]: She turns around.
[00:56:33] [SPEAKER_04]: She's like, why isn't anyone helping me?
[00:56:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, she asks for it.
[00:56:36] [SPEAKER_03]: And she tries to even ask for a key.
[00:56:39] [SPEAKER_03]: But it's like, she can't even get the words out.
[00:56:40] [SPEAKER_03]: At first, she's trying.
[00:56:42] [SPEAKER_03]: You could tell she's scared.
[00:56:44] [SPEAKER_03]: But she's also trying not to make a scene at first.
[00:56:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:56:48] [SPEAKER_03]: And I'm like, there ain't no way.
[00:56:50] [SPEAKER_03]: I would have kicked that door down by them.
[00:56:51] [SPEAKER_03]: But like, the fact that she's trying to open the door and then it gets quiet.
[00:56:58] [SPEAKER_03]: And then the door kind of releases and she can get in.
[00:57:02] [SPEAKER_03]: But one of the moms just like grabs her son and is just like holding him.
[00:57:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, I'm like, what the fuck is happening here?
[00:57:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, y'all, it's not like they can't hear him screaming.
[00:57:12] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:57:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Whether or not you believe that he's doing this for attention or whatever bullshit you think of.
[00:57:18] [SPEAKER_02]: The door is locked.
[00:57:20] [SPEAKER_02]: You can see that the door is locked.
[00:57:22] [SPEAKER_02]: And Cole's mom is trying to keep him calm and like, I'm here.
[00:57:28] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm trying to get in while like secretly panicking because she cannot get the fucking door open and no one's helping her.
[00:57:35] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:57:35] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:57:36] [SPEAKER_02]: It's that scene alone.
[00:57:39] [SPEAKER_02]: She should have won the Oscar.
[00:57:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.
[00:57:42] [SPEAKER_03]: And then on top of that, she's going through all that.
[00:57:45] [SPEAKER_03]: She takes her son to the hospital and the doctor is literally accusing her of child abuse.
[00:57:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:57:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Which I can't blame him.
[00:57:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, you have to take these things seriously that you bring in this kid.
[00:57:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Seems like something traumatic happened.
[00:57:58] [SPEAKER_03]: And he has like all these scars and stuff and marks.
[00:58:02] [SPEAKER_03]: You have to investigate that.
[00:58:04] [SPEAKER_03]: But she is pissed.
[00:58:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:58:07] [SPEAKER_02]: And then this is when Malcolm goes into his room.
[00:58:12] [SPEAKER_02]: This is where we get the very infamous scene.
[00:58:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Highly quoted.
[00:58:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Highly replicated.
[00:58:20] [SPEAKER_02]: I see dead people.
[00:58:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Which was ranked number 44 on AFI's 100 years, 100 movie quotes list.
[00:58:28] Oh.
[00:58:29] [SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
[00:58:30] [SPEAKER_02]: And then I.
[00:58:30] [SPEAKER_02]: But like, I think the rest of the conversation is as important as the icy dead people, which is like the iconic part of it.
[00:58:38] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:58:38] [SPEAKER_02]: But he goes on to say like all the time walking around like regular people, they don't know that they're dead.
[00:58:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:58:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:58:47] [SPEAKER_03]: And he talks about, doesn't he talk about how cold it gets when they're around?
[00:58:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Or do we just see that like.
[00:58:54] [SPEAKER_04]: Like that happens a little bit later after the school play when he sees the people like hanging from the auditorium.
[00:59:01] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:59:02] [SPEAKER_04]: Gotcha.
[00:59:02] [SPEAKER_04]: But I think that it's also a really good conversation that he has with Dr. Malcolm in that like he, you can see that he's kind of trying to like figure out what his deal is.
[00:59:15] [SPEAKER_04]: Because he's like, you're sad.
[00:59:16] [SPEAKER_04]: Like you seem sad.
[00:59:18] [SPEAKER_04]: And he's like, what tells you that?
[00:59:20] [SPEAKER_04]: He's like, your eyes told me.
[00:59:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Like, so he can, they have, besides Dr. Malcolm telling this terrible story about driving that goes nowhere.
[00:59:28] [SPEAKER_04]: And then he's just like, I don't think you're good at this.
[00:59:31] [SPEAKER_04]: Let's remix the conversation here.
[00:59:34] [SPEAKER_04]: But he's like, we're done.
[00:59:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Can I tell you my secret now?
[00:59:38] [SPEAKER_04]: I think it's so great because it also sets up like the boundaries for the rest of the movie.
[00:59:42] [SPEAKER_04]: This is like where we get the rules of like, now we know like where, why, when ghosts might appear for whatever reason.
[00:59:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Right.
[00:59:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Because prior to this, we don't see any ghosts.
[00:59:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:59:54] [SPEAKER_03]: After he says, now they're popping up every fuck.
[00:59:57] [SPEAKER_03]: So we are now Cole at this point.
[00:59:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
[01:00:00] [SPEAKER_03]: Like before this.
[01:00:01] [SPEAKER_04]: It was almost a full hour before the first actual ghost, Malcolm aside, pops up.
[01:00:07] [SPEAKER_03]: I think it's almost like a split because the beginning, we are walking through this world essentially through Dr. Malcolm's eyes.
[01:00:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Like we're seeing it through his perspective.
[01:00:20] [SPEAKER_03]: And then we start getting some of Cole's perspective.
[01:00:23] [SPEAKER_03]: We kind of understand like what's going on with his home life.
[01:00:26] [SPEAKER_03]: But the minute he says his secret, we now are looking at things from Cole's lens, which is very, very cool.
[01:00:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Because now we can see all the shit that he's going through.
[01:00:36] [SPEAKER_03]: And we're like, we don't want it.
[01:00:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[01:00:38] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't want it.
[01:00:39] [SPEAKER_02]: We don't want to pop it out anymore.
[01:00:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Well, and Ken pointed out, which I had never realized, the very first scene where he meets Malcolm in the church.
[01:00:50] [SPEAKER_02]: He's like, I'm going to see you again, aren't I?
[01:00:52] [SPEAKER_02]: So Cole already knows Malcolm's dead and he has to help him, but he's a friendly ghost.
[01:00:59] [SPEAKER_02]: So he's not really scared of him or put off by him, especially after like he realizes Malcolm is like trying to help him essentially.
[01:01:13] [SPEAKER_02]: And then at the end, Cole says, I'm not going to see you again, aren't, am I?
[01:01:19] [SPEAKER_02]: And so like he realizes he's helped Malcolm through his unfinished business and he's really fun.
[01:01:26] [SPEAKER_03]: But in the scene when he says, I see dead people, you do see his breath.
[01:01:30] [SPEAKER_03]: And apparently every time this happens, it's not CGI like that.
[01:01:38] [SPEAKER_03]: I see breath situation.
[01:01:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Practical effects.
[01:01:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Which I always love because it ends up coming out a little bit more real.
[01:01:46] [SPEAKER_03]: But for him as a child, I also was like, damn, that's horrible.
[01:01:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Because what they did was they would drape this like huge plastic sheeting over the sets and then pump in freezing cold air.
[01:01:59] [SPEAKER_03]: So it would be below freezing and you could see our breath.
[01:02:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Ain't no way.
[01:02:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Y'all better CG the eye the fuck out of this because I'm not doing it.
[01:02:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Not cool.
[01:02:14] [SPEAKER_02]: So like you said, this is when we start seeing all the ghosties.
[01:02:18] [SPEAKER_02]: They mostly appear at night in his fucking bedroom.
[01:02:23] [SPEAKER_02]: We see the angry mother.
[01:02:25] [SPEAKER_04]: This scene in the theater, I think is like forever ingrained in my brain.
[01:02:29] [SPEAKER_04]: Because that's one of my favorite things about going to see a scary movie in the theater is that like community jump scare aspect of it.
[01:02:37] [SPEAKER_04]: We went as a whole damn family.
[01:02:39] [SPEAKER_04]: And so it was like parent, me, my sister, parent sitting in the row.
[01:02:45] [SPEAKER_04]: And I can see the peripheral vision when the ghost like books it across the hallway.
[01:02:50] [SPEAKER_04]: And then we get our favorite violin like jump scare.
[01:02:54] [SPEAKER_04]: And my mom who was holding the popcorn went and cries.
[01:03:00] [SPEAKER_04]: The whole audience was like, whoa, you know, it just it was one of those really great like shared experiences.
[01:03:08] [SPEAKER_02]: I love that.
[01:03:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Like, yeah, we have a couple of those like knocking popcorn out of the way to get out of the theater situations that we love to tell at parties.
[01:03:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[01:03:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[01:03:25] [SPEAKER_02]: So we get a couple of scenes or well, we get a shot of like the thermostat dropping.
[01:03:30] [SPEAKER_02]: We're like, oh, here we fucking go again.
[01:03:33] [SPEAKER_02]: The kid found his dad's gun and the back of his head's blown out.
[01:03:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Like it's just a lot of seeing what Cole is dealing with.
[01:03:43] [SPEAKER_02]: All the time.
[01:03:44] [SPEAKER_02]: And then, like you said, after the school play, Cole is walking through the school with Malcolm.
[01:03:52] [SPEAKER_02]: But then he stops and freezes because he sees all of the people hanging in the school, which used to be an old courthouse.
[01:04:00] [SPEAKER_02]: And then we get more exposition about like.
[01:04:05] [SPEAKER_02]: A lot of them are mad and I just want them to go away.
[01:04:09] [SPEAKER_02]: And it gets really cold when they're they're around.
[01:04:14] [SPEAKER_02]: So we find out more about like what he experiences when he encounters these ghosts.
[01:04:20] [SPEAKER_03]: But Malcolm is like, I want I'm out this bitch.
[01:04:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Like after I think after that conversation, he's like, you know, I don't really believe in this shit.
[01:04:29] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not.
[01:04:30] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[01:04:30] [SPEAKER_04]: He was like possible hospitalization.
[01:04:33] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[01:04:33] [SPEAKER_04]: Hallucinations.
[01:04:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[01:04:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[01:04:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[01:04:37] [SPEAKER_03]: He's ready to give up.
[01:04:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[01:04:39] [SPEAKER_02]: And then we get the scene where where mom is accusing Cole of stealing her mother's bumblebee pendant and putting it in his drawer.
[01:04:49] [SPEAKER_02]: And he he's still guarding his secrets.
[01:04:52] [SPEAKER_02]: So he's not.
[01:04:53] [SPEAKER_02]: But he's also being truthful as he can be.
[01:04:58] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's like, I didn't take it.
[01:05:00] [SPEAKER_02]: And his mom is just like, there's only fucking two of us in this house.
[01:05:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.
[01:05:04] [SPEAKER_03]: It's heart wrenching because you see him process that like you see him take a deep breath and and you could see that he's trying to make a decision.
[01:05:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[01:05:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Do I lie?
[01:05:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[01:05:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Or do I tell the truth and knowing the repercussions of telling the truth and that she's not going to believe me and just watching him.
[01:05:26] [SPEAKER_04]: And he's like, I don't know.
[01:05:53] [SPEAKER_04]: right she's like genuinely so concerned and so sad for her kid yeah and the scene directly after
[01:06:01] [SPEAKER_03]: this where he tries to go in his room he's you know he's upset and then here comes some more
[01:06:07] [SPEAKER_03]: motherfucking ghosts fucking around and he's so scared he goes and he the way i cried so hard
[01:06:15] [SPEAKER_03]: he's like if you're not very mad yeah and when he calls the fact he calls her mama
[01:06:20] [SPEAKER_03]: oh that scene was so hard so sad but the way she reacts to him as well is like i wish all moms
[01:06:29] [SPEAKER_03]: were like this because she said look she's like look at my face i'm i'm there's no way i'm mad
[01:06:35] [SPEAKER_03]: like yeah not mad mad enough that you can't like sleep in the room and then when she holds him
[01:06:40] [SPEAKER_03]: he's like you're shaking and you could see her face like breaking because she doesn't know what the
[01:06:47] [SPEAKER_02]: fuck is wrong or like how to help yeah it's so heart-wrenching yeah and then the next scene
[01:06:56] [SPEAKER_02]: is malcolm's wife uh she works in an antique store she sells a ring it's weird i'm a hustler baby
[01:07:07] [SPEAKER_03]: because that's all she's doing is hustling this this couple to buy this fucking crazy ass expensive ring
[01:07:16] [SPEAKER_03]: what speaks to you right she got bills to pay my husband's dead i got a mortgage to pay
[01:07:25] [SPEAKER_03]: come get this blood diamond asap
[01:07:29] [SPEAKER_02]: and i mean she makes a sale yeah she does and we've seen this guy kind of be around and she's
[01:07:38] [SPEAKER_02]: kind of keeping him at arm's length but it's his birthday she gives him a first edition copy of a book
[01:07:44] [SPEAKER_02]: and then they kind of share an intimate moment where like they're touching heads and just embracing
[01:07:49] [SPEAKER_02]: and then we hear the window shatter and we see malcolm walking away so obviously malcolm has seen this
[01:07:56] [SPEAKER_02]: intimate moment and been upset it's implied that like he punched the window or something and and then he
[01:08:03] [SPEAKER_02]: talks about he just wants to be able to talk to his wife again and cole suggests talk to her in her
[01:08:10] [SPEAKER_02]: sleep where she where she'll listen and then malcolm goes back to his recordings of his sessions with vincent and
[01:08:21] [SPEAKER_02]: starts rewinding and listening and there's one session where he has to leave the room for a few minutes
[01:08:27] [SPEAKER_02]: and while uh he vincent's fine when he leaves the room and then he comes back and vincent's very upset
[01:08:34] [SPEAKER_02]: and so he kind of listens to the the piece while he's out of the room and you can see someone or you
[01:08:42] [SPEAKER_02]: can hear someone in spanish just saying i don't want to die i don't want to die i don't want to die
[01:08:46] [SPEAKER_02]: and that's where it clicks for malcolm vincent could also see and talk to dead people and that's where he
[01:08:56] [SPEAKER_02]: failed vincent was not believing him right and so he he starts to think about how he can help cole in
[01:09:05] [SPEAKER_03]: this situation and then he realizes that the ghosts probably have unfinished business and they probably
[01:09:13] [SPEAKER_03]: come into cole for help and so he says to cole you know i was gonna kind of give up on you but by the
[01:09:19] [SPEAKER_03]: way i think i figured it out kiddo i think you just need to listen to them and see what they need help with
[01:09:27] [SPEAKER_03]: and cole is so brave he's so brave so brave because enter marissa cooper puking on herself
[01:09:34] [SPEAKER_04]: i love surprise misha barton but i also i also wonder i was like did he help him or did he enable him
[01:09:41] [SPEAKER_04]: to become even more of a people pleaser he's like hear me out instead of setting your boundaries with
[01:09:45] [SPEAKER_04]: these ghosts why don't you just be like oh tell me what's wrong how can i help can i do to support
[01:09:51] [SPEAKER_02]: you through this there's just like a line of ghosts now yes but they were coming regardless
[01:10:04] [SPEAKER_03]: come on guys they were there already so instead of feeling seeing gunshot wound pop up whatever the
[01:10:11] [SPEAKER_03]: fuck he wants let me find out what he wants let's get some rapport going let me let him know
[01:10:16] [SPEAKER_03]: bitch you dead yeah so that you can mosey on and knock before you come in like we just have to
[01:10:22] [SPEAKER_03]: set up a rapport and then some boundaries right so i think he and he's once he starts doing this
[01:10:30] [SPEAKER_02]: he's in a much better play he's literally in a play yeah it's a good time so his first attempt at
[01:10:39] [SPEAKER_02]: helping goes is a little girl named kira shows up she's she's puking she's very ill they show up to
[01:10:48] [SPEAKER_02]: her funeral or after her funeral back at her house and you kind of hear that she had been sick
[01:10:55] [SPEAKER_02]: a lot and she in two years and yeah and her little sister has started now showing symptoms of the same
[01:11:03] [SPEAKER_02]: mystery illness and so we find out the mom has munchausen by proxy and has been poisoning her
[01:11:11] [SPEAKER_02]: children and kira hadn't secretly recorded her dumping like it was like drain cleaner or something
[01:11:19] [SPEAKER_04]: in her yeah i was like some kind of like cleaning solution yeah but like the fact that she like
[01:11:26] [SPEAKER_04]: didn't do that downstairs and like yeah was so bold enough like at that point of like making her sick
[01:11:33] [SPEAKER_04]: to come in set the tray down go back grab this bottle add in a cap full of whatever and then have
[01:11:40] [SPEAKER_03]: the nerve to be like and don't tell me it tastes bad i hate when you do that yeah oh but the fact that
[01:11:46] [SPEAKER_03]: she was like i feel better today like i'm good yeah and i think it's because i'm not eating this bullshit
[01:11:52] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah yeah if i could change anything about this movie it would be i'm missing the riot at this funeral
[01:12:03] [SPEAKER_04]: yes because she if he's popping in that vhs player and half of your room turns around and
[01:12:10] [SPEAKER_04]: sees what you did and all people do is just have the audacity to go and like look at the mom as he's
[01:12:18] [SPEAKER_04]: accusing of her like no i want the pitchforks i want someone coming for her i want the cops being
[01:12:22] [SPEAKER_02]: called i want like everyone at this woman's throat punch in the face like i think this is a wasp
[01:12:29] [SPEAKER_03]: funeral because you know white anglican oh anglo-sexton yeah yeah i'm thinking that's why
[01:12:40] [SPEAKER_03]: age is deep down yes it's all about decorum essentially but i'll tell you one thing i don't
[01:12:49] [SPEAKER_03]: know i don't know he was just saying a black family but my my mother finds out somebody was doing my
[01:12:56] [SPEAKER_03]: like any one of my parents were doing that to me jumped on sight yeah dead on sight ain't no trial
[01:13:05] [SPEAKER_02]: she dead no she's dead cole has a sense of purpose now like he saved this other little girl from the
[01:13:13] [SPEAKER_02]: same fate because the mom was starting to do it to her so he feels good in the fact that he's helped
[01:13:20] [SPEAKER_02]: this ghost gate closure and also helped a living person as well not suffer the same um illness danielle
[01:13:28] [SPEAKER_03]: so yeah cole feels great that he was able to help and she i i'm assuming she
[01:13:38] [SPEAKER_03]: dissipated went to the light i don't i don't really know and but also the bus ride to get there
[01:13:45] [SPEAKER_03]: she he was like wow she traveled far to come see me so that was interesting so like they're coming far
[01:13:52] [SPEAKER_03]: and wide now yeah throwing up oatmeal in my fucking house i think they said the mixture was between it
[01:14:00] [SPEAKER_04]: was like mushed bananas and like a little bit of like chunky cereal to like give it that texture
[01:14:05] [SPEAKER_04]: but something that would be like pleasant to like have in your mouth and like spit it out
[01:14:10] [SPEAKER_04]: it made me want to vomit for sure it is nasty and also the picture that you have behind you danielle
[01:14:17] [SPEAKER_04]: is like one of my other favorite jump scares because it's like a legitimate fear of someone
[01:14:21] [SPEAKER_04]: reaching out from under their bed and like grab you on the ankle oh yeah it's so scary
[01:14:29] [SPEAKER_03]: but it's so sad that she had that video and she didn't have time to to give it to her his her dad
[01:14:34] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah yeah and so but then we see like cole is in a much better spot he's getting makeup advice from the
[01:14:44] [SPEAKER_02]: the burn teacher ghost at the play like he he's kind of making these partnerships and almost seems like
[01:14:52] [SPEAKER_02]: friendships or allyships with the ghosts now as he helps them with their unfinished business
[01:14:59] [SPEAKER_02]: he's more extroverted he gets a pretty big role in the play and he gets to pull the sword from the stone
[01:15:07] [SPEAKER_04]: they get to call tommy tomasino a village idiot so satisfying i also love how this movie has not one but
[01:15:15] [SPEAKER_04]: two school plays to be funding the arts more and with like really well made props and costumes might i add
[01:15:22] [SPEAKER_04]: again i don't know if it's like if that's a private school because they had the uniforms and stuff
[01:15:26] [SPEAKER_02]: but yeah i love that he he gets his he gets his moment yeah um and then this is the point where
[01:15:34] [SPEAKER_02]: he asked malcolm i'm not going to talk to you anymore am i or not going to see you anymore um
[01:15:43] [SPEAKER_02]: malcolm encourages him to tell his mom and just communicate with her like let her know what's going
[01:15:50] [SPEAKER_02]: on and just communicate so that she's not in the dark and just worried about you all the time right
[01:15:58] [SPEAKER_02]: especially now that you're kind of in a better place because there's a scene where you see her
[01:16:04] [SPEAKER_03]: having a night terror and cole tries to like calm her down so he already is aware that she's struggling
[01:16:12] [SPEAKER_02]: with this yeah so he does this by way of they're stuck in in traffic because there's been an accident
[01:16:19] [SPEAKER_02]: and she's just kind of wondering out loud i hope nobody's hurt blah blah blah and he's like
[01:16:25] [SPEAKER_02]: well someone is is hurt they actually died and i love that her reaction is all of our reactions which
[01:16:33] [SPEAKER_02]: is like can you see something like what yeah looky lou she's like what and he's like no she's standing
[01:16:43] [SPEAKER_02]: outside my window i can see dead people blah blah blah and at first she's just kind of like
[01:16:50] [SPEAKER_02]: what but then he to prove it to her he he talks about how he grandma sometimes comes to visit him
[01:16:58] [SPEAKER_02]: she loves the butter the bumblebee pendant that's why she takes it out of your closet and he said the
[01:17:07] [SPEAKER_02]: question that you asked at her gravesite her her answer is all the time i fucking
[01:17:17] [SPEAKER_03]: boohoo cried boohoo cries because then he asked her what the question was and she said
[01:17:26] [SPEAKER_03]: i asked if she was proud of me and so the answer being all the time i'm like boohoo crying and then
[01:17:33] [SPEAKER_03]: also saying is grandma part of the bay hive and i'm very happy with all of this
[01:17:43] [SPEAKER_02]: and then malcolm goes home and takes cole's advice and starts talking to his wife in her sleep she's
[01:17:51] [SPEAKER_02]: falling asleep watching their wedding video and then you see her breath gets icy and she drops
[01:17:58] [SPEAKER_02]: something which is his wedding ring and then he does this flashback of all of the instances where
[01:18:04] [SPEAKER_02]: he thought she was just mad at him or ignoring him and really it was because he did not survive the
[01:18:11] [SPEAKER_02]: gunshot from the previous fall you did malcolm you did yeah malcolm in the middle literally
[01:18:21] [SPEAKER_04]: stuck between worlds he's in the middle he can't transcend he cannot move on the the shot of that
[01:18:27] [SPEAKER_04]: too because he's kind of like leaned up against the wall and has he's like hugging his stomach but then
[01:18:33] [SPEAKER_04]: it like flips back to when he's on the bed great camera work there yeah yeah and then like in the
[01:18:40] [SPEAKER_02]: movie he's always wearing items he wore or touched the evening before his death including his overcoat
[01:18:47] [SPEAKER_02]: his rowing sweatshirt and the different layers of his suit so like the other ghosts you probably
[01:18:54] [SPEAKER_02]: would have seen his exit wound if he hadn't been wearing layers every time you saw him
[01:19:00] [SPEAKER_02]: because it was a small entry wound yeah that we see and so he does tell his wife that he needed to
[01:19:10] [SPEAKER_02]: help someone but you were never second you were always first and so he kind of has closure with her
[01:19:16] [SPEAKER_02]: she does say i miss you and then it fades to white and then it's the credit and then did y'all watch this
[01:19:24] [SPEAKER_02]: on hbo max yes did it immediately come up with like suggestions and it was like comfort viewing the big
[01:19:32] [SPEAKER_02]: bang theory i was like oh no i didn't see that part i like immediately was like click i'm out
[01:19:44] [SPEAKER_02]: hbo knows what the people want because it's always like i know for me watching a horror movie i always
[01:19:50] [SPEAKER_02]: like to watch something happy or light after a horror movie just so i don't it doesn't seep into my dreams
[01:19:57] [SPEAKER_02]: so i was like oh you got your finger on the pulse we did it that is the sixth sense we saw dead people
[01:20:05] [SPEAKER_03]: we sure freaking did a few things about the script shamalan revealed that the earliest seeds of the
[01:20:15] [SPEAKER_03]: film were planted by his own experience watching a child play alone at a wake i saw a wake at a house
[01:20:22] [SPEAKER_03]: and the food's out and the and people are walking around in dark clothes and this child was sitting
[01:20:27] [SPEAKER_03]: on the stairs talking to somebody but nobody is there so yeah he also did say that classic ghost
[01:20:35] [SPEAKER_02]: stories and films like poltergeist and the haunting were inspirations for the eerie atmosphere and
[01:20:41] [SPEAKER_02]: psychological horror um he also talked about the tale of the dream girl from nickelodeon's are you
[01:20:49] [SPEAKER_04]: afraid of the dark was an inspiration yeah that was if i remember correctly because that's one of my
[01:20:58] [SPEAKER_04]: favorite like old nickelodeon episodes tale of the dream girl was the one where she's like getting
[01:21:03] [SPEAKER_04]: ready for prom and she's like a ghost at this high school and the guy like asks her prom picks her up
[01:21:09] [SPEAKER_04]: but she was like waiting for her like boyfriend to get hit to get her then they get like a car accident
[01:21:17] [SPEAKER_03]: or something yep yep god i love that show he also spent a whole year wrestling with the screenplay
[01:21:27] [SPEAKER_03]: which went through 10 drafts and in the first draft could you imagine the hero isn't dr malcolm crow
[01:21:34] [SPEAKER_03]: a child psychologist he's malcolm crow grizzled crime scene photographer and the kid who can see
[01:21:41] [SPEAKER_03]: ghost is his own son hmm so that would have been interesting which is very similar to what i
[01:21:52] [SPEAKER_03]: believe to be a better film and now i have to go back and watch it which was stir of echoes
[01:21:56] [SPEAKER_03]: that came out the same year as this movie it's a twin movie essentially yeah location filming took place
[01:22:03] [SPEAKER_02]: mostly in the streets and buildings of philadelphia i didn't do it on purpose but i have my philadelphia
[01:22:10] [SPEAKER_02]: mom
[01:22:14] [SPEAKER_02]: including saint augustine's church on fourth and new streets in old city and on saint albin street in
[01:22:21] [SPEAKER_03]: southwest center city and m night initially wrote an ending where dr malcolm does help cole come to
[01:22:31] [SPEAKER_03]: terms with his abilities but after further reflection he decided the twist ending would be more impactful
[01:22:38] [SPEAKER_03]: and it was it was a cultural phenomenon yeah i don't think it would have hit the same if he was
[01:22:45] [SPEAKER_03]: just like okay well you're good with the ghost i'll see ya i'm out yeah i mean this movie is talked
[01:22:52] [SPEAKER_04]: about weirdly enough a lot in my household in that like whenever i bring it up or whenever it is brought up
[01:22:58] [SPEAKER_04]: my dad always has the same reaction which is like six cents i love that movie he's dead the whole time
[01:23:03] [SPEAKER_04]: great ending one of the best movies like you know like he has his favorite little like six lines that
[01:23:09] [SPEAKER_04]: he says and this movie is usually in my annual like halloween october rotation it's also a safe movie
[01:23:17] [SPEAKER_04]: that kevin will watch and it like i just that that twist was so i think cleverly done and just in general
[01:23:29] [SPEAKER_04]: this movie i really don't have a lot of bad things to say about it overall and i think it like withstands
[01:23:36] [SPEAKER_04]: the test of time besides the vhs tape like there's not a lot of things that like date it i think it can
[01:23:42] [SPEAKER_04]: easily be redone in modern times with like the same kind of recipe and stuff but yeah just so
[01:23:51] [SPEAKER_04]: so much more than a ghost movie yeah yeah and i love that it's become like a cultural
[01:24:01] [SPEAKER_02]: thing like even in 50 first dates it's like she buys it for her dad for his birthday and then they have
[01:24:07] [SPEAKER_02]: to watch it every night and act surprise every night that he's been dead the whole time yeah i
[01:24:13] [SPEAKER_02]: just love things like that where it's it's so woven into the tapestry of film now yeah that it's
[01:24:22] [SPEAKER_03]: referenced all of the time just pop culture in general i mean like literally in the roasting of drake
[01:24:29] [SPEAKER_03]: this summer we here we have kendrick lamar starting out one of his diss tracks saying i see dead people
[01:24:37] [SPEAKER_03]: is insane and what i really wonder because he's bringing that back to the zeitgeist to the top of
[01:24:44] [SPEAKER_03]: mind for everybody like gen z and even maybe some young millennials i wonder if they even know what
[01:24:52] [SPEAKER_02]: the fuck that means yeah or where it's referenced from i guess yeah yeah anything else um i i like that
[01:25:02] [SPEAKER_02]: well i i don't like anytime anyone's marriage is falling apart but ruse willis was dealing with a
[01:25:09] [SPEAKER_02]: personal crisis during filming his marriage to demi moore was ending this real life emotional turmoil
[01:25:15] [SPEAKER_02]: helped him tap into the quiet reflective nature of his character malcolm crow so not happy that his
[01:25:21] [SPEAKER_02]: marriage was ending but at the same time i think especially that that distance between him and his wife
[01:25:28] [SPEAKER_02]: that's portrayed on film i'm sure he was able to garner some of that emotion from real life yeah and a
[01:25:36] [SPEAKER_04]: different pace from what bruce willis had normally done yeah kind of known for shoot him up big action
[01:25:42] [SPEAKER_04]: stuff so i think this role it's sucks that that happened but he was able to clearly channel a lot
[01:25:50] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah that character well like jackie said she used to work at blockbuster i mean we already knew that but
[01:25:59] [SPEAKER_03]: she started right like this was one of the bigger movies that came out at the start of your career
[01:26:05] [SPEAKER_02]: oh yeah so were you seeing them like fly off the shelves yes so i started working in at blockbuster in
[01:26:12] [SPEAKER_02]: september of 1999 okay um so this came out march 20 2000 on vhs and it's just like i think it was even
[01:26:22] [SPEAKER_02]: like two bays of shelves were dedicated to the sixth sense i don't think we had dvds yet or if we did it
[01:26:34] [SPEAKER_02]: was a very small percentage it was mostly vhs but just everyone like the insanity and the hoopla and the
[01:26:41] [SPEAKER_02]: people bringing it back and be like can't believe the ending and so it was really exciting to be able
[01:26:47] [SPEAKER_02]: to experience that from a video store clerk perspective and they did like so much promotion
[01:26:56] [SPEAKER_03]: and so wild because now we're getting direct to streaming for video movies that came out like
[01:27:03] [SPEAKER_03]: literally last month so the fact that they did a six month online promotion campaign for this movie
[01:27:10] [SPEAKER_03]: and when it was released on vhs and dvd in march of the following year is crazy but it also went on
[01:27:20] [SPEAKER_03]: to become the top selling dvd of 2000 with more than 2.5 million units shipped and the all-time second
[01:27:27] [SPEAKER_03]: best selling dvd title up until then as well as the top video rental title of all time
[01:27:35] [SPEAKER_02]: hang and i think the first best selling dvd title may have been the matrix because that came out
[01:27:45] [SPEAKER_02]: on dvd a little bit sooner than the sixth sense i think yeah i still can't believe i missed seeing
[01:27:53] [SPEAKER_03]: that movie in the movies i saw it on dvd or rented or whatever blew my mind oh i love this
[01:28:02] [SPEAKER_03]: osmond was so dedicated to his role that he memorized not just his lines but the entire script
[01:28:08] [SPEAKER_03]: including the other actors parts he would often reflect he would often recite lines from the
[01:28:13] [SPEAKER_03]: other scenes during breaks what a little genius right you're so dedicated
[01:28:21] [SPEAKER_02]: in 2013 the writers guild of america ranked the screenplay number 50 on its list of 101 greatest

[01:29:08] [SPEAKER_02]: watching it on the reg but like every time i watch it i enjoy it well i think i can say a five-day
[01:29:16] [SPEAKER_03]: rental instead of a two-day rental now i think i'm over my trauma of figuring it out like i said there
[01:29:24] [SPEAKER_03]: were a lot of things that i appreciated more about the movie re-watching it i did drift off and i was
[01:29:31] [SPEAKER_03]: a little bored in some parts but being able to have those emotional tiles that we talked about made
[01:29:38] [SPEAKER_03]: it a lot better experience for me but i do think cinematically it's a beautiful film yeah very much so
