[00:00:00] In a world where brilliant scientists dream of changing the future, two guys named Bud and Doyle had very different plans. This week, we're stepping back into Bio Dome. Welcome to the No More Late Fees podcast. I'm Danielle. And I'm Jackie.

[00:00:28] And we're just two best friends and ex-blockbuster employees re-watching some of the best and worst movies from the late 90s and early 2000s. This week, we're revisiting the 1996 quotable comedy stoner classic, Bio Dome. But before we dive in, let's get into some housekeeping. If you love the podcast and you want to support us, here's how you can.

[00:00:56] Ready to dive into some exclusive cinematic experiences? Gain access to movie-themed content, stickers, live events, and our hand-picked Spotify playlist by joining our Patreon community at patreon.com slash no more late fees. Become our movie-loving bestie today. And we're adding one more person to the ecosystem. This week, my sister Heather is joining us to celebrate the movie that proved you should never underestimate two lovable goofballs.

[00:01:25] Or a purple sticky punch. Lord, pray for me. If you want to get to know Heather better, check out our previous episodes of Billy Madison, The Sweetest Thing, Evolution, and Charlie's Angels. As well as this week's bonus episode where we rank the best and worst of Pauly Shore. Okay, Jackie, what is this infamous movie about?

[00:01:52] Bud McIntosh and Doyle Johnson are two best friends who accidentally get locked inside the biodome, a high-tech environmental research facility in the middle of a year-long experiment. While the scientists try to keep their mission on track, Bud and Doyle stumble through one unforgettable situation after another, turning the sealed ecosystem into an adventure filled with memorable quotes, unexpected friendships, and a few lessons about growing up.

[00:02:18] It stars Pauly Shore, Stephen Baldwin, William Atherton, Joey Lauren Adams, Teresa Hill, Kylie Minogue, and Rose McGowan. It was written by Sam Harper and Lance Krieg. It was directed by Jason Bloom, who also did Overnight Delivery. And you can currently watch it on YouTube, Tui, and Pluto TV. Where did you guys watch it? Also Amazon. You can watch it on Prime. Yeah. But before we start, let's get into our ratings rewind.

[00:02:49] So, you know the drill before we get into the movie. We'll reveal the rating our Y2K versions of ourselves would give, and then at the end we'll see if our current selves agree with our initial rating. Our scale consists of would buy it, would buy it again. The best would play on repeat. Five-day rental. Would watch again. Two-day rental. Okay, but nothing to write home about. And same-day rental. Throw an explosive coconut at it, because it's trash.

[00:03:17] All right, Heather, we'll start with you. What was your Y2K rating of BioDome? 100% drank all the Kool-Aid and the purpose of the punch. It would buy it, buy it again. And Jackie, I'm just going to be surprised, I'm sure. Mom really wasn't watching or understanding what we were watching as you were watching. Yeah. It was just like, okay, you're entertained for 90 minutes. Leave me alone. Cool. Cool.

[00:03:48] Because, like, we had to have watched this so many times to have memorized. Like, I was sitting there and I knew what lines were coming up. And, like, it's not a good movie. I don't know. It just, I guess, was silly enough to capture our, like, little not quite formed brains yet. Yeah. I don't know. It had the hook we needed. Yeah. The simpleness that we did.

[00:04:16] But, yeah, like, we'll get into it. But watching it again, I can enjoy it again for, like, the first half. But then the second half, I just, I'm just like, it's happening. What is happening? You know what's so crazy, though? I was watching it and I was like, oh, I can't do this. And then the second half, I was like, oh, it's getting better. So, I don't know. I've never seen this movie. I swore, I was like, okay, when I watch this, it's going to click.

[00:04:46] Like, I've had to have seen it. Not a thing. But it was very much giving me Dude Wears My Car vibe. Like, they could be companion films. Yes. Except I very much love Dude Wears My Car, even now. I wonder if you had seen this in 96. No. There's a reason I didn't see it. Okay. Like, it's not like I didn't know this movie exists. Okay.

[00:05:13] I have such strong discernment because I hate Stephen Baldwin. And I hated him back then. I hated him so much, I actually preferred William. Nobody preferred William over him out of the Baldwin brothers. But I would pick him as my third favorite if I had to. Like, ugh. Always, I could not stand him. That's funny. So, that's one of the reasons.

[00:05:42] Because I didn't, I liked Pauly Shore. I just, and those, like, those twists? Yeah. Those, dare I call them baby white dreads? I don't, I don't know. Awful. Yeah. I had such a crush on him, I remember when I. Oh, Heather. No. I loved Pauly Shore. Like, Pauly Shore is my dude. But then Doyle is just, like, so cute.

[00:06:12] Gross. Sarah, too. I don't know. I don't think that way now about Stephen Baldwin. But back then, he did something for me. Like, maybe in the Flintstones, I would have been like, oh, I can kind of see it, Heather. But this one? With them doo-doo dreads? No. Mm-mm. Hard pass. All right. Box office. This movie came out January 12, 1996. What a great way to start the year. Happy New Year.

[00:06:42] But what's crazier is, like, I'm thinking about all the movies we've covered. And such good movies that just had horrible amounts of money that made. $8.5 million budget. Mm-hmm. $13.5 million worldwide gross. Wow. This was, like, peak Pauly Shore, though. Like, his name alone probably made them their money back. Yeah. This was, like, the end of his pull. Yeah. Had to be.

[00:07:11] Yeah, because when I listed out the movies for the game, I was like, there has to be more. And then I was like, I went on to his IMDb. I'm like, there are no more. Pauly Shore is his own sexuality. Like, honestly. There's something. He has such a, like, handle on both his feminine and masculine sides. Yeah. And there's something, not in this movie, but in, like, Son-in-Law.

[00:07:41] Yeah. Where, like, he's so vulnerable. You're just like, oh, Pauly Shore. Yeah. A hundred percent. Something about it. Like. Yeah. I hate to even say it. But something, like, something about that man. I'm like, I feel like that man could talk me into sleeping with him. Yeah. And it's just, like, knowing who he, like, fully knowing who he is and everything. And I still think I'll wake up the next morning and be like, oh, my God. How did this happen?

[00:08:11] Pauly Shore, what are you doing here? And he would just be, he would just light a cigarette and be like, well. Making his nasal noise. Oh, my God. Anywho, at the box office, we, and this is what was also crazy. Like, the competition was insane. So, we have 12 monkeys coming in at number one. Don't be a menace to South Central while drinking your juice in the hood at number two. Made Jackie watch that. Number three, eye for an eye.

[00:08:40] Number four, grumpier old men. And number five, Toy Story. So, it had steep competition. It opened at number nine. So, it's still broken at the top ten. And the film's entire reported worldwide gross came from its domestic theatrical run with no significant international box office reported. So, really, it's all within the U.S., which makes a lot of sense.

[00:09:08] And despite mixed financial results, Biodome found a much larger audience on VHS cable and DVD. So, it became one of the better known cult comedies of the mid-90s. It was on rotation on a lot of, like on HBO for sure. Yeah. Okay. Oh, okay. Let's see what the critics had to say.

[00:09:30] So, Ethan Smith of Entertainment Weekly viewed Biodome as another entry into the mid-90s wave of goofy comedies aimed at younger audiences. The publication criticized the screenplay and its reliance on familiar comic routines while acknowledging Shore's recognizable comedic style.

[00:09:51] And then Lil Raj, you know, this man shows me every fucking time that he gave this movie 0.5 out of four stars. And yet again, I'm going to bring it up. It will forever be my bane of my existence. Yes.

[00:10:14] He was able to pull, after digging in his ass, pull out half a star to give this fucking movie and not maps anything. You will pay for your crimes, dirt monster. He criticized its reliance on juvenile humor and saying it devoted nearly its entire runtime to repetitive gags rather than developing characters or story.

[00:10:41] And I'm sorry, anybody listening who's sick of me talking or Jackie talking about Babs, this is not the podcast for you. Go watch Babs. And you will see why we are so upset. Ugh. Yeah. So annoying. You're spreading the good word. Well, while Danielle calms down, let's hear a message from our pod pals.

[00:11:11] Dave. Liam. Join us for Watch It If You Can. Our podcast is all about box sets we've created of our favorite films and TV shows. Some you've seen, some you haven't, and others you may never want to watch. Watch It If You Can podcast is available on all your favorite podcast apps. And crew, Kylie Minogue.

[00:11:38] Who I didn't know was Kylie Minogue in this movie that I've seen a million times. Because I never saw Kylie Minogue. Really? Like today you didn't know that was Kylie Minogue? No, like I've known like as an adult, but like when we were watching it, I didn't know that she was the same person singing the songs we were listening to on the radio. I didn't necessarily put it together. I love her. She's so pretty and she's so tiny.

[00:12:03] She made her first major appearance in an American feature film as Dr. Petra Von Kant. And she has since called this film her worst career move. She said it's the only thing she has done in her professional life that her father ridicules her for. Damn. Well, director Jason Blum made his feature directorial debut with this movie.

[00:12:29] And Alec Baldwin told his brother Stephen Baldwin that doing this movie could end his acting career. And that's why he's number one on the list of the Baldwin brothers. And that's not to say that he's not shy in his own right. But since. Yes. And the movie features one of the first onscreen appearances of Jack Black and Kyle Gass as the musical duo Tenacious D.

[00:12:58] Didn't remember they were in the movie either. Well, you probably like we. Yeah, we didn't know who they were. They were. Yeah. Patty Hearst makes a cameo as Doyle's mother, which I am just now realizing because I don't think. I think my brain, like half my brain took a vacation with like, you don't need all of us. We're going to tap out. There's one movie you can like phone it in on. Yeah. Yeah. Okay.

[00:13:28] So this is yet another movie where I don't think it's going to go through the plot. I will say there is a real biodome and it's outside of Tucson, Arizona. And when and if Danielle and I get our road trip funded, that will be one of the stuff because you can tour it too. So that will be one of the stops on our road trip to Bend, Oregon to visit the last blockbuster.

[00:13:56] So if you'd like to sponsor us. So we can go to the biodome and the Lisa Frank building and Casa Bonita and the last blockbuster hit us up. So movie opens, we're introduced to Bud and Doyle and it is very slapsticky. It is very stoner comedy just to, as Danielle said, very similar to dude, where's my car?

[00:14:26] Just two slackers just living their best life, getting, having like insanely hot girlfriends that are out of their league. And you don't understand why they're with them and their girlfriends are very into saving the environment and like going and cleaning up and all of this stuff. And it's Earth Day, which is also very important to the movie.

[00:14:47] So they go and they're trying to get out of doing like the trash pickup that they told their girlfriends they would go and help with. And so Bud hits Doyle in the head with an encyclopedia. And so when the girlfriends get there, they're like, oh, yeah, he's unwell. He can't go. And the reason they said he hurt himself was one of the most quotable lines in the movie.

[00:15:16] There's this giant stuffed mahi-mahi on the wall. And they're like, we were trying to free the mahi-mahi. Free the mahi-mahi. Come on, Danielle, you want to say it? I don't because when I think about freeing the mahi-mahi, I think about the time my dad fed me gator and didn't tell me that's what it was. And I had mahi-mahi that made me sick and I was freeing the mahi-mahi in the bathroom for an hour.

[00:15:42] So I didn't have a good time when they were talking about freeing the damn mahi-mahi. But I will say that the reason that these women, like you look at them, you hear them, you know they have sense. They were absolutely digmatized. You cannot tell me that these two were not slinging dick. Yeah. And that they were actually, they have no room for any other skill. Right.

[00:16:12] So I do think, I mean, they're biting each other's toenails. There's nothing not nasty that they won't do. And sometimes we all in our past might have a little something, something. You move on, you live your life. But every now and again, you think about, oh my God. That was a time. And that's what I think it is.

[00:16:38] In this movie, were there any, was there at all any point where you laughed out loud? Yes. There was one time. And I don't think it's for the reason it was supposed to be. But the, the scientist who like loses his shit. Uh-huh. When, I think it's two times. When at some point, the, the, the lens like scan, like pushes right into his face and his eyes look absolutely insane.

[00:17:06] And then the other time is when he's down in the bunker and he's eating the parrot. Yes. And he has that like crown thing. Because it took me a second. I was like, is that a chicken? And I was like, oh my God, he ate the bird. And that made me laugh. Okay. That was it. At least we got a laugh out loud moment. Yeah. Out of this movie.

[00:17:29] So the, the girlfriends realize what happened because the symbol of the encyclopedia is on Doyle's forehead. So they're pissed and they're just like, what the fuck? We're going. Bye. And then while they're at the pickup, they're like, Hey, we're going to call Bud and Doyle and just tell them that we're going to like this, this party with these dudes just to make them jealous. Kind of. Yes.

[00:17:56] The guys that the girls meet at the party or whatever. One of them is Trevor St. John who played Todd Manning, the second version on One Life to Live. And you know, I was bugging out when I saw it. Like, obviously my girl Rose was like a great surprise. But when I saw Trevor St. John, I was like, Oh my God. Todd Manning. Continue. The movie had some redeeming qualities then, right? Yeah.

[00:18:26] There were some surprises for real. Yeah. And Rose, I feel like this is just her character from Jawbreaker. In college. In college. Yeah. But this came out before Jawbreaker. I know. So maybe actually she stole someone's ID. She's, she's out for the summer. No, it's April. She's on spring break. Yes. So, Bud and Doyle decide they're going to go and find the girls and, and win them back.

[00:18:56] But they have been drinking bladder busters, which are like big gulps. And so Doyle really has to pee and they find a mall. The biodome in no way looks like a mall. Actually, like, there are some malls in New Jersey where that, like, the top layer, like, it has like a, yeah, kind of like, it just looks like a greenhouse. Yes. A little bit.

[00:19:26] Not like the full structure. But that's the only thing I can give them. Just that smidge. Also the fashion mall. Remember the fashion mall? It didn't look like completely like that, but it had that, like, terranium look to it. Yeah. Sorry. RIP. Fashion mall. So they, they stop and they're trying to convince, like, the security guards to let them in because they have to pee.

[00:19:56] And they're like, no, you can't go in. They're still not getting that this is not a mall. This is like, and it's like a ribbon cutting and, like, the sponsor is there and the five scientists are all, like, all excited because it's Earth Day and they're going to the biodome for a year and they're going to be sealed in. And the whole point of the biodome is to see if they can maintain homeostasis at 100% for a year.

[00:20:24] So they have, like, all, they have different ecosystems. They have animals. They have an entomologist. I'm not a scientist at all, but I love the science-iness of this concept. I'm like, this is so fun. All the experiments that are going on at once. I think that Doyle and, what's the other guy's name? Bud.

[00:20:48] Bud and Doyle are, like, an allegory for these billionaire, horrible human beings. And they go and they take over the Earth. They do horrible things. They have, they're greedy. They're, they're, people are telling them this is hurting the environment. They don't care. They don't care until it gets to a point of no return. And then all of a sudden they're trying to, like, do something. Yeah. And then they turn to the smart people who told them all the things that they didn't need to be doing to fix their problem. Making a filter.

[00:21:17] Making a filter. One cigarette. I love it. And every time the scientists tell them, like, the problem, they're like, oh, we can fix it. No problem. And then they make it worse. Tell me, that's not what's happening. We caught you all your bugs. And you were like, hey. What? The way that man twitches and loses his mind. Poor Romulus.

[00:21:44] I will say, like, as I was watching the movie, I'm like, this is a movie I feel like could be remade. And, like, it's such an interesting premise. Yeah. That I feel like it could be remade and still be a comedy and done really, really well. Yeah. Like, biodome. No, not that biodome. Yeah, like, redo. Biodome. But actually good. Yeah. So, I forget how they break into the biodome. I don't know.

[00:22:14] Like, I swear I blinked for one second and then I saw them pissing on a waterfall and I was like, hey, wait, how are they in there? I think they walked in. Like, there were firecrackers involved. Yeah, like, people were just distracted and they just walked in. Yeah. Okay. They must have thrown the firecrackers and then, like, while everyone was paying attention to that, they just walked in behind the scientists, I guess. Yeah.

[00:22:38] And so then you hear, like, as he's peeing into the waterfall, like, homeostasis at 92%. And you're like, oh, no. This is going to go terribly. So bad. And one of, which one's Doyle? Your favorite, Stephen Ballin. Stephen Ballin. The other guy takes advantage of him so bad. Mm-hmm. And I thought they were brothers at first. Oh, just besties.

[00:23:09] Yeah. Okay. So they, and they're still, like, none the wiser. They just think, I think at one point they're like, I don't think this is a mall, but they make no attempt to, like, understand what it is or try to, like, get out at that point. They're still just wandering around. And so now they're sealed in, and then the scientists find them, and they're like, what the fuck are you doing here?

[00:23:37] I feel like they should have locked them up immediately. Yeah. Like, they gave those idiots so many chances to fuck shit up. Yeah. It's really the scientist's fault. Yeah. Well, the moment that they got into the bed with the women, that would have been it for me. Yeah. I would have handcuffed them. Yeah. The women sequestered corner. Yeah. You get handcuffed to this pipe, and we'll bring you food.

[00:24:03] Like, you are in, like, solitary confinement for one year. Yeah. And they just give them, like, because they're like, well, we can't, if we open the door, that negates this whole, which I'm like, can't you just restart tomorrow? Yeah. Yeah. Or there's gotta be a way, like, in evolution, you just, like, blow the air down so no good air gets out or in. Yeah. There had to be a way to transfer bodies in and out of that place.

[00:24:32] First of all, their security was lacking. Somebody should have did a walkthrough to make sure nothing got through. Because, like, people do stupid shit like this, right? And two, I feel like they could have opened it right as soon as they saw it. They could have just kicked them out and just seal it back up. Like, I don't think it would, it would have been a security breach. It's not a big deal. Two hour delay. Didn't they say in the movie, like, this might actually be a good twist or something about, like. Well, PR-wise.

[00:25:02] Well, because they had to spin it because they were in there. I thought from a science standpoint, having a variable would have been really cool, you know, like, to see how it makes changes on everything. Yeah, because, like, what are we studying if we're at 100% when we go in and we just maintain 100%? Yeah, like, we were able to, I guess it's just to see if they can keep it stable, like, which is hard.

[00:25:32] But I think a better thing is to see how we can fix a horrible environment, which is what we're doing, you know. Which was the third act of the movie. It's like, oh, we fucked shit up. Let's see if we can clean it up type thing. Right. So, yeah. And Bud is just always scheming and Doyle just goes along with it. But they find them, they give them a coat closet to sleep in.

[00:26:00] And when they're like, Rochambeau for the pillow and the blanket. And he's like, I win the blanket. I win the pillow. Like, those were the little moments that I don't even quote or, like, they just live dormant in my head until I watch this movie. My face is literally Rose McCown right now. Okay. So, yeah.

[00:26:29] Now it's just them running amok, hating the food. And, like, and this is, these are the parts that I hate are, like, the, like, spitting the food across the table and stuff. I'm just like, why? Like, it's not funny. When that man had his foot in Stephen Baldwin's mouth and then told him to get the corns, I physically turned my head away. And I told the dog, let me know when it's over.

[00:27:01] So, Bud and Doyle are immediately attracted to, I think it's Mimi and Petrie, Petrie Dish. The two women, well, there's three women scientists, but the two young women scientists. And so they're, like, hitting on them. And, like, the first night they're in the biodome, they each climb into one of the women, like, respective women's beds.

[00:27:25] And, like, the scene that happens, I'm like, what are we doing? Like, there was arm movement. Like, I was just, like. It was, like, full on touching her breasts. Yeah. Well, Doyle and then Bud, it looks like he was wrapping his arm around the front door. It was not good. I know.

[00:27:51] Like, we've done a lot of movies where it was, like, oh, that didn't age well. But this was, like, I feel like one of the most egregious displays. And not only that they wrote the script for that to happen, for the men to do that, but that they didn't give the women a voice to say, like, a stronger, like, no, get off me, scream. Like, absolutely not. They just scream and then they run out of the, like, the rooms. Yeah, it's like silliness. Silly reaction.

[00:28:20] And then they're rewarded later because the girls are, like, trying to sleep with them at the end. And I'm like, what in the hell? It would have been fine if the guys, like, eventually rubbed off on them and the girls were, like, you know, they're not so bad. Yeah. But for them to do that was just, like, ugh. And what I hate is people are, like, you guys are taking it too seriously. It just, it was the 90s. I'm like, but it's still, like, crazy. Yeah. And it's why we're here today. Like, it was the 90s.

[00:28:49] It's what we all were told was normal and okay. Yeah. Yeah. And it was, like, it was funny, but it was because it was so normal to accept that. Yeah. Behavior, yeah. Yeah. So then we just see them kind of going through the daily motions.

[00:29:14] And they do give it in a little bit of a groove, but, like, everyone's still just kind of, like, eh. And they do make some attempt to, like, ask the scientists, like, what are you doing? Like, Romulus with his little butterflies that he needs to bone and stuff like that.

[00:29:36] Or the lady, Mimi, telling him how, like, the tilapia spawn in the rice patties and stuff and that's how we're going to. But I'm like, why do you keep eating soy if you're, like, growing tilapia and, like, isn't that the point is to be, like, self-sustaining where you can eat the crops and the animals that you're growing in the biodome? I digress. Yes.

[00:30:01] And so they're kind of just kind of going through the motions and they just start to get really bored. And at one point they break into the, well, no, there, is it in the storage closet that they're in where they find all the snacks? I don't know if it's, but I think that's what I thought.

[00:30:23] They start going and finding the snacks and they find laughing gas and they just, it's just so disrespectful to, like, when the scientists see them, they're like, this is insane. And then they get so mad at them that they send them to another side of the biodome. The desert of the biodome. And somehow they figure out a way to escape. Someone left a key in one of the panels.

[00:30:51] And so they find the key and open it and they leave. They go to a part, no. They somehow order food. Yeah, they order food, like Uber before Uber or DoorDash before DoorDash. And Joey Lauren Adams' character, I don't remember her name, her stepfather. That guy. Yeah, he's the guy that's in everything. And then I was reading up on him because I'm like, where do I know him from?

[00:31:22] I thought it was like a Brooke Shields TV show back in, on NBC back in the day, but I can't remember what other stuff I've seen. Sorry, I'm trying to find. Suddenly Susan or something like that. Yes, but he was in something else and I was like, oh, that's what I know him from. Let me find. But then I also read that he passed away in 2015 from cancer. So then I was sad. His face and the way he talks is just so memorable.

[00:31:52] Yeah. He looks Native American to me. Am I, am I, do you guys see that? He's Puerto Rican. Puerto Rican. Yeah, I like his list for the way. Yes. Yes. Yeah. I'll find it. And so he is delivering them food. Like he, that's his side hustle. And he keeps calling Bud Bob for some reason.

[00:32:19] I'm like, did he actually like, was the actor just didn't care enough to call him the right? No, it's like what I kept thinking is like, was this like a mistake and they just kept it in the movies? No, it just seems like that's something the character would do. I mean, he didn't even want to get up to use the bathroom. He was, he seemed wearing diapers. That's true too. Yeah.

[00:32:42] One other aspect is that a lot of the shenanigans that these two get into, the girls and everybody finds out about it by the news. Like they are constantly on the news for doing stupid shit. And that's how their girlfriends find out that they're in the biodome at first. And they come to the biodome and they're like, what the hell's going on? You're ruining this. And they're like, well, we can't get out for a year. And the girls are like, are we supposed to wait here for a year? Give me a break.

[00:33:12] So they end up going to a college party and that's when they see my Trevor St. John. And the other actors was somebody else too. But, and they pretend that they're into like environmental things too, to try to like get these girls to like them as well. Which is such an odd, such an odd thing to do. But yeah. Oh, the actor that we're talking about is Taylor Negron.

[00:33:38] And he was in Angels in the Outfield is what I know him from. Ah. Was he on Suddenly Susan? Did I make that up? NBC show? Yeah, I'm scrolling through it and I don't see it yet. Okay. It might be a different, he was on an NBC show. He was on an NBC show, I feel. Yeah. He's a big character actor, I feel. He was also Alessandro on Friends for one episode. Oh, yeah.

[00:34:03] So anyway, they go and then they see, do they see the flyer for like a party? And so then they go to this party and then they invite everyone back to the biodome. And so the scientists wake up the next morning and like everything's just fucking trash. There's just cigarettes. Well, the scientists walk into the party. Oh. Except for the main, well no, the main dude gets handcuffed. Yeah.

[00:34:33] But the rest of the, like everything's fucked up anyway. So they all end up partaking in the partying pretty much. And then the next day it's just like fucked. Yeah. Yeah. And then that's when the scientists have kind of had it. And they're like, pretty much like, we just need to cut this experiment short. Like there's no way, like they've ruined it. They've let people come in and it's destroyed.

[00:34:59] And homeostasis is now like some like insane percent. Yeah. It's like lower than 30% at this point. But the man who's financing this is William Leakey. And so throughout the whole process, he's trying to figure out how to like not lose all his money. And so he has been using PR to market these idiots. And people want them on their shows. They keep talking about them.

[00:35:27] They're talking about action figures and everything. But at this point, he's like, I want to pull the plug. And now all of a sudden the guys have a conscience. And they're like, oh no, we can fix this. And he tells the scientists, like, let's come together. Let's fix this. And Doyle decides the best way to make everyone not have the decision is to swallow the key. Which I'm like, isn't the guy? Leakey already came in. So what are we talking about?

[00:35:57] Well, there was already a way to get in. They broke the glass. There was like wood and stuff. Like, it would be hard. It was kind of like he was talking to all the scientists. He's like, who's and they're like, who's with us? Like, let's try and do this. And then they're like, you can leave if you want to. But in like, I'm going to count to five and I'm going to swallow the key. And then like whoever's here, we're going to do it. But and that what's his face?

[00:36:26] The Faulkner, the guy that we were just talking about. What's her face is boyfriend. He he's like, wait, wait, wait, let me get out of here before y'all do this. And so, yeah, they all work together except Dr. Noah Faulkner goes apeshit and leaves. Like, we don't know what he's escaped to the tunnels. Yes. And he lost his fucking mind. But you really can't blame him. It's like, this is the thing that he's worked his whole life. Right. And they just come and ruin it with a party.

[00:36:55] It's like it's like the parents sticking out on their teenage kids. Like, what the fuck is wrong with you? Yeah. It feels like at first I thought he was making stink bombs. Because I didn't know what he was doing. And so he's like down there making bombs and shit. Like, when he threw the first one, I'm like, how did people not feel that? I don't know. It was weird. He killed the parrot, ate the parrot, wore a crown of the parrot's feathers. What was the parrot saying? I am God. No, I said no.

[00:37:24] I am God. Yeah. Lost complete sense of reality. But they're working together to clean things up. Even trying to use old cigarette butts to make a filter. But then they find out they can use sheets instead. It's just. It's a mess. It's a mess. But every little bit, they start, the homeostasis starts getting higher and higher. And you see them like come into their own with the like Doyle made dinner.

[00:37:55] And it was like, they're all enjoying like the vegan food together and stuff. Yeah. I cannot handle the togetherness though when they're all using the same toothbrush or working out of the amount of lunch. So, we're working on getting the biodome back up to the homeostasis. And Bayon Doyle do bring up a valid point. Like you're just trying to maintain something that was perfect anyway. Right. Whereas like the earth is not perfect.

[00:38:23] So, we need to work to improve what we've already damaged. And then this is. The earth is perfect, but humans are making it not perfect. Right. And so, this is about the point once they start like homeostasis starts going back up. And they want to get it back to 100 by Earth Day. And so, this is when Petrie and Mimi want to show their appreciation. And Bud and Doyle are like, we have girlfriends.

[00:38:53] Like you were trying to sleep with them a couple months ago. Right, right. A solid turnaround. Yeah. So, you know, they're like humping the door and they're like, that was even the smartest or the dumbest thing we've ever done. And I was like, that was the dumbest thing those girls did. Yes. Was to get home in there. Yeah. Oh, man. So, it's approaching a year.

[00:39:19] Like, everyone's kind of, like there's a group outside, like waiting for them to come back out, see if they achieve homeostasis. And then we see Dr. Noah and his crazy bunker. And he's created some serum that like when injected into a coconut and you throw it, it becomes a bomb and explodes.

[00:39:43] And somehow this fool convinces Bud and Doyle to like start setting them out all over the biodome. It's not hard to do. Yeah. Yeah. There is. Yeah. There is a scene before this that I do really love when like they're trying to get the biodome back in homeostasis. And I think it's to the safety dance. Yeah.

[00:40:07] And they're just like, because the sponsor man brings in like, you think it's like a negotiator to come in and extract Bud and Doyle. And all he does is play the safety dance on like a giant speaker. And then it cuts to Bud and Doyle and the rest of the scientists like doing this like train of happy dance. It was the best part of the movie. It was the coming together montage. Yeah.

[00:40:39] So Bud and Doyle realize that the coconuts are bombs. And somehow they save the day. I don't even remember at this point. They realize because the doctor tells them to like continue placing the coconuts. Then one throws it to Doyle and he misses it and it blows up the side of the like desert area. They realize it's bombs there.

[00:41:08] So they're able to like get rid of all of them and trick the doctor. And he's not able to like blow up anything. And they get out of it. So like the moment they're like ready to exit. Yeah. And then somehow the doctor has a remote detonator for the coconuts that it looked like he just injected serum into. I, the coconut bomb promise was confusing. Yeah. It wasn't well thought out. No. No. But he was crazy and he ate his macaw. So.

[00:41:38] Yeah. Yeah. So they get out. Yep. Okay. And everyone's super happy. And the girlfriends are there and they're all good together and they waited for them. And I think the girls at some point had saw the guys that were trying to like date them and found out they were losers. Yeah. Which is like this, the, the, the bars in hell already.

[00:42:05] So it wasn't hard to be better than the two idiots, but apparently they couldn't even do that. So, so yeah, I think that's it. Right. Like. Yep. That is bio down. There was one quote that I do, or like, I don't say it out loud, but I think it in my head all the time. And it's the, when he's wearing the mask with the nitrous oxide and he's like, we have tippies, we have tippies, we have lots of good things to eat.

[00:42:34] Like anytime I'm like getting ready to eat something really good, like that'll run through my head. So what other fun facts do we have? I wasn't much. I love the fact that this was reportedly a serious survival drama at first about two guys who accidentally get trapped in a dome. And then executives later decided to pivot the film into this silly 90s style comedy to make it more commercially viable.

[00:43:04] Like I said, I think there are good bones to this movie. Look, I, as a kid, oh, who didn't want to be locked in a mall? Right. Who didn't have that fantasy? So I think it just goes to something like that somehow, some way. That's why I love that they did that trope in the 90s on TV shows.

[00:43:28] Cause we got it on the OC and we got it on Saved by the Bell and Dawson's Creek and the final season with Joey and Pacey. Plus Dawn of the Dead, the whole thing is set in the mall. Yeah. Let's all go to the mall today. I can't wait to our mall tour. Me either. I think it's going to be great. We're going to come out to Robin Sparkle.

[00:44:00] So the movie was filmed primarily in Los Angeles County, California with the striking biodome structure is actually the Donald C. Tillman water reclamation plant in Van Nuys, California, which has famously been used in countless other movies and TV shows. Oh, I thought you were going to say something else. Well, I had the thought of like, was it the, the building in Power Rangers, but I think that was square, not round. The building in Power Rangers.

[00:44:29] It's round to me. Eureka's Castle. I know that's not her name, but that's. Rita? Rita, there you go. Are you talking about like where Zordon was? Zordon. Zordon was? It is round, but it's a different type of round. I just. Yeah.

[00:44:54] Pauly Shore has said that this movie is one of the films fans ask about him the most frequently at conventions and live appearances. If there were a lot more parents like Miss Terry out there, I'm sure that's why. Letting the young, impressionable kids watch this movie. And it looks like production built a large biodome set on sound stages instead of actually filming inside the real biosphere too.

[00:45:23] I guess they wanted to respect the integrity. Like I had mentioned previously, the soundtrack was really good. Like it got, it got you grooving at the very least. It did feature music from several prominent alternative rock bands of the nineties, including Sublime, 311, POD, and the presidents of the United States of America. Yeah.

[00:45:48] So Professor Bloom, who presumably teaches at the film's fictional college, Arizona tech. He was wearing a shirt with the phrase thriving on chaos written on top of caricature drawings of Bud and Doyle. And after Jen autographs his shirt, he mentions to her and Monique that was Amy Jo's Amy Johnson. What was her name? Amy. Joey Lauren Adams. Joey Lauren Adams. Maybe because we said power.

[00:46:15] So after Jen autographs his shirt, he mentions to her and Monique that he's writing a song about Bud and Doyle. And that was played by Roger Clinton. Roger Clinton. Yeah. You mean Bill Clinton's brother? I don't know who Roger Clinton is. I'm hoping other people know who Roger Clinton is. I assumed he was a music-y. Oh, it is Bill Clinton's brother. You're right. Holy Toledo. I watched enough nanny episodes to know who he was.

[00:46:45] So as we were, like, just yesterday, I came across this TikTok. So do you know who Tony and Ryan are? They're an Australian radio hosts. Oh, yeah. And they're best friends. Uh-huh. So this TikTok appeared on, oh, let me find it now. Like, literally yesterday. And I was like, oh, God, we're doing that movie tomorrow.

[00:47:13] And so I'm going to play you the audio from their TikTok. Oh, damn. That's not it. BioDome. One week. Not next week. Everyone watch BioDome. One week later. I would like to formally apologize for suggesting we all watch BioDome. And BioCritics has a record low score of one out of ten on Metacritic.

[00:47:41] BioDome is often considered to be one of the worst films ever made. Maybe for some of us who thought we liked it, forgot that when we watched it, it was 1am in some shed and we're all high as fuck. I mean this with the highest and utmost disrespect. It was very bad. I was like, oh, no. And that was before I rewatched it. We were such pure little souls. We were. We're just like, okay.

[00:48:08] We can't even fall back on we were high or drunk or, no. We were. Just enjoying ourselves. Don't call sober thinking that Bud and Doyle were the funniest guys on the planet. And science. We're learning things about butterflies. I'm not. I'm not going to hate on it. It was just like a different vibe. I was very much in my everything lovey-dovey girly thing.

[00:48:34] You know, like I only watched some of these stoner films either because of you or like my brothers. Like my brothers made me watch Predator over and over again and just kept fast rewinding and fast forwarding to Arnold Schwarzenegger going, oh. Like they would do it in slow motion. That's the only reason I saw some of those things growing up. Just. I was like, I hate this. You like the lighter side of life.

[00:49:04] Yeah. Is someone a princess? Here's the Danielle checklist. Is someone a princess? Is someone a queen? Is there a love interest? Is someone a witch? What else? I'm trying to think. Is there a sleepover? Oh, yes. Is there a dance number? Do they get locked into a mall? Do they get locked into a mall?

[00:49:31] These were my prereqs for a quality ass film. And then random sports movies. Yes. I didn't understand the sports, but I love the idea of like rooting to win something. And that's it. All right. Oh, before we get into present day ratings, again, don't forget to hit us up at NoMoreLateFees on Instagram, Facebook. TikTok, YouTube, threads, Twitter, Blue Sky. I've probably said all of them.

[00:50:01] And let us know what you think of Biodome, because we're about to give our ratings. Heather, what is today's rating of Biodome? Today's rating, despite all of our grievances and despite how problematic it is, I'm still going to notch myself down and go with five-day rental instead. But I will still, anytime this is on TV, I will stop and watch it. I will still quote it. I can't shake. Just like the Australians. No!

[00:50:31] No! Jackie. I'll probably go two-day rental. I mean, I still love all the quotes. I will continue to quote this movie. If anyone is like, yeah, Biodome, I'll be like, yeah, right. But I'm not going to put this movie on to watch. You're not going to also, like, lead out on I Love Biodome. Right. Let it be part of the conversation. Yes.

[00:51:02] I just want you guys to know, some way, somehow, you're paying me back for the hour and change that I have wasted in my brain cells to watch this movie. This is a one-day rental. I will, same-day rental, I mean. I don't want to have to watch it again. Fair enough. At least I said I did it. It wasn't, like, it's weird. It's a same-day rental, but it's not the worst thing I've ever seen.

[00:51:29] But it was, it was, like, so easy for me to, like, play on my phone and do other things. And I honestly miss nothing. Right. Yeah, yeah. Without my childhood coming along for the ride and adolescence just, like, wafting over me as I watch it, I wouldn't have the, I totally understand that.

[00:51:50] Well, if you have opinions about Biodome or want to share your favorite Polly Shore quote with us, hit us up at our quick drop, 909-601-6653. You can text us or call into that. We have realized people, the youth, don't leave voicemails anymore, so if you want to text, that's fine. Also, if you leave a review, if you leave a comment on Spotify, Twitter, Threads, Blue Sky, we'll feature you.

[00:52:20] We did get a review from Cecil Tyrone. I'll take this out. This is Andrew's review.

[00:52:53] Thank you. And, Cister, thank you for joining us. Danielle, thank you for tolerating us. You guys were fine. I feel like all of the movies I've done have been just era-based good movies, so next one I come back for is going to be a quality movie we could all enjoy. Yes.

[00:53:18] I think it's good that you guys have the symbiotic thing going on, and I'm just here for the ride, so don't ever stop. Don't ever stop. And, as always, free the mahi-mahi. And be kind and rewind. Thank Jesus it's over. You're welcome. Goodbye. Be kind and hold. Bye.
