Yeoh Ep. 56 - The Brothers Sun (2024)

Before we gear up to get Season 4 underway, we've got to talk about Michelle Yeoh's latest TV series, THE BROTHERS SUN! From the co-creator of GLEE, AMERICAN HORROR STORY, and more, THE BROTHERS SUN is an action-crime-comedy series featuring Yeoh in a major supporting role. All eight episodes are available on Netflix now!

[00:00:00] Hello and welcome to episode 56 of The Complete Works season 3. wondering when we're finally going to announce our season four finalists. Well, you have to wait one more week. Because, or he said, I just said, whoops. Yeah, yes. Because in that time that we took off a new project featuring Michelle Yoe in a major role dropped. And unlike other TV shows that featured Michelle Yoe like Strike Back or Marco Polo, the fact

[00:01:43] that this one has Yoe in such a think that's the rookie or rookie or something like that?

[00:03:01] I assumed you were talking about Castle,

[00:03:03] which that's how far back my network TV.

[00:03:06] Wow.

[00:03:07] Stuff goes. All these years due to reviding someone else. This power family is head of the Jade driving. So we're like criminals. You could have told me that.

[00:04:21] We're trying to keep you safe.

[00:04:22] Yeah, it's fucking work.

[00:04:24] So the brothers soon stars Michelle Yo as Eileen Mama-son, setting out pretty much to watch the first two episodes, not the whole series. I did end up watching the first four episodes. So I've seen about half the season right now. Mike D. you've seen the first two. Correct, yes, the first two. Okay, if you were instead going to the theater the weekend this came out, the only new release was Night Swim, which opened at number two, which I believe is a Blumhouse horror movie.

[00:05:40] I've seen the trailer for it, looks silly.

[00:05:42] You know, it's the first week in a January horror movie dump

[00:05:44] that is traditional.

[00:05:47] Last year we had Megan, and that was a real outlier point, like when it first hit or something like that. And I was trying to find like an archive version of like what the top 10 looked like on Netflix, like the weekend the show came out. Yeah. Couldn't, couldn't find it. I don't think there's any way to like easily access an archive of what the Netflix top 10 was. Yeah, of course not. Because then people would be able to tell when Netflix is lying or whatever they do. Exactly. So, yeah, that is unfortunate. I'm also pretty sure like we said this off the

[00:07:03] air. The top 10 is fake. It's, it's fairy dust. It's a killer, they had May December, and they had Maestro. Maestro got in the race. The killer in May December did not. I guess they also had that Nayed is also a Netflix movie, which got a couple of acting nominations. I don't think that's a real movie either. That's everybody's reaction to those nominations. It's like, wait, that's a, what? July 6th, 2023, Jackie Chan,

[00:08:21] and John Cena, this movie called Hidden Strike,

[00:08:25] which is apparently very terrible. out of Netflix I think. Sure. But they are largely overshadowed by all the bad stuff that has come out, right? Correct. Yeah. Yeah. And in particular, there's that one clip I think from Patrick Willems that somebody, oh man, I don't remember what the context of the new thing they were talking about. But in his video, Patrick Willems is talking about Knives Out and how Netflix was admitted.

[00:09:42] Like yeah, they lost out on a ton of money by only having that limited like two week

[00:09:45] or whatever it was theatrical release for Knives Out. comes to Apple, people are like, oh shit, finally, it's the hype, you let it build, all this stuff, and Netflix is squarely just like, no. But that's not really relevant to a TV show necessarily, but there's all that swirling around. So, a little scared, basically. And also, Netflix is like, the leader of that content glut where they're just constantly churning out stuff.

[00:11:01] And so much of it is disposable and forgettable.

[00:11:05] And so it kind of just makes everything sort of feel the same.

[00:11:07] And that's a bummer.

[00:11:08] It is definitely a bummer. was expecting. It was either expecting like, and I feel like we've sort of moved beyond this on Netflix originals, but like, you know, I thought it might be like the original first season of like Daredevil, where it's like this really like realistic, gritty, bloody, violent kind of crime thing, but it's not. It's set to, you know, like funk and pop music and like anime, very heavily, anime influenced

[00:12:21] and then very comedic and like, you know,

[00:12:23] like you said, the main character Bruce wants to do improv.

[00:12:26] So like there's a lot of Netflix shows, and actually speaking of Daredevil,

[00:13:42] this is, I think I first clocked this

[00:13:44] when I was watching Daredevil, when that was out,

[00:13:46] is that they really don't, Like it's only eight episodes. I've seen four of them. I do think this would be a great half hour show. I think being an hour long maybe kind of kills the momentum of it a little bit. But I think Brother Student really comes alive when it is focused on the kind of contrast between the two brothers. I think the crime stuff itself feels maybe a little bit generic, a little bit tired.

[00:15:01] It does start to pick up a little bit by episode four.

[00:15:04] But the improv stuff, like the comedy overcome their differences or whatever the hell. Probably, which is the thing that will like keep me watching. Like the promise of like a potential Michelle Yo fight. And I hope that that happens. I think I am probably going to try to finish the season.

[00:16:20] Now that we're doing the episode now,

[00:16:21] my obligation to the show is done.

[00:16:24] But I don't know, I think So I get to the actual show. I did that, it skipped like four minutes into the episode and I was just like in the middle of a scene and I was like, what the fuck? So I went back and just like let it play from the beginning. And then with five minutes left in the episode, like a full five minutes on the progress bar, it just shrunk down to the tiny little corner

[00:17:42] and it was a commercial for Mayor of Easttown.

[00:17:44] And it was like watch credits or continue watch it

[00:17:46] like your next episode or whatever. It's horrifying. Terrifying. And I had watched it, you know, Sunday night. And my parents were watching it Monday night. And I was like in a different part of the house and I heard it start and I was just sitting there like, ha ha. And it just like waited for, and there are all of a sudden they're like, what the fuck? They're just screaming. Very funny. Absolutely hilarious. Nice.

[00:19:00] I'm kind of into it too.

[00:19:01] I feel like I've seen a lot of discussion around it,

[00:19:02] be it like, I don't know, people are dragging it.

[00:19:04] It seems like on the online,

[00:19:05] I've been seeing a lot after the fact PR answer. Yeah, like a really weird one. So yeah, I don't know. There's really a story behind that. That's weird. But first two episodes, I'm into it. I think it's pretty solid. It also seems like it's connecting back to season one in some ways, which is interesting. I don't know. It's crazy for a true detective show. But you know what else? So into the first two episodes of The Brothers soon.

[00:20:21] Like, yes, we should get back to the show

[00:20:24] that this episode is about, which of Also, yeah, this is the fifth time this has happened. The only time it hasn't happened otherwise

[00:21:40] is Star Trek Discovery, where Michelle Yoh

[00:21:43] dies at the end of the first episode.

[00:21:44] Sorry.

[00:21:45] It does the opposite, where she's the star

[00:21:46] of the first episode and then I think that kind of, you know, only those first two episodes starts to reveal that, you know,

[00:23:01] her plan of protecting Bruce and like why they left and,

[00:23:05] and all that stuff is like she really sink her teeth into. And I will say you didn't get to see this episode. But I think episode three is one that kind of starts to expand her character a little bit more. So, you know, she's pretty heavily involved in the show, you know, the entire way through.

[00:24:22] But yeah, three so far from what I've seen at the four episodes, I've seen like three is her biggest showcase so far.

[00:25:21] make a Mortal Kombat movie. I wanna make a Mortal Kombat.

[00:25:22] And it went viral and I remember watching it.

[00:25:24] And it was really cool.

[00:25:25] It was a pretty solid thing.

[00:25:26] And then they never made a movie out of it.

[00:25:28] They did make a Mortal Kombat web series,

[00:25:30] that ran for like two seasons that he was a part of.

[00:25:33] But I was like, a web series back in like 2011.

[00:25:36] It wasn't really taken off.

[00:25:37] It wasn't a Netflix thing.

[00:25:38] It was like, it was a few years later,

[00:25:40] it would have been a Netflix thing

[00:25:42] and it probably would have been like a Cobra Kai-esque hit

[00:25:44] or something.

[00:25:45] Which Cobra Kai, even that wasn't a Netflix thing

[00:25:48] for the first two episodes,

[00:27:01] which you watched.

[00:27:02] And I think he watched, he directed like episode four

[00:27:03] and six and a couple of the other ones.

[00:27:05] It was him and Viet Nguyen, really. It's like, yeah, kind of really it. She's been the mother position of authority, whatever matriarch kind of figure in a bunch of stuff, but I felt like those two were really pretty heavily influenced her character or this type of story. But those are sort of like the only ones

[00:28:22] that kind of popped to my mind.

[00:28:23] It wasn't like, oh, here's the 10 WUJA films

[00:28:25] that she was in there.

[00:28:26] You know, it's not exactly like that.

[00:28:27] Yeah, no, we have a word for that in Taiwan, American. Which is exactly, that's almost word for word, like a crazy rotations conversation that happens in that movie. I think you're right. Yes, you're exactly correct. And so thematically, it's covering similar territory and also Michelle Yoh's character feels very similar in the way that she wants what is best for her children or what she

[00:29:43] wants what is best for her children in what she's like sort of trying to support her son, but also like if you are her son, that's gonna be devastating to you here. Yeah. You know? Yeah, I think they, I think from the, even from the two episodes, they do a pretty good, you know, they have the fun balance

[00:31:00] between the like the criminal underworld stuff

[00:31:02] and like also it's like, it's like a college comedy thing.

[00:31:05] You know, like, yeah, you know,

[00:31:07] like a Peter Parker Spider-Man situation fight scene with the great British baking show is very funny and different and really like sets the tone which in the like the comedy and action and all that stuff. But that that shoot out they go to in episode two where they like are trying to find some assassin right that's sort of why Charles like comes to LA to like track down the person that assassinated their father and begin to unravel that mystery. And so they need to go to whatever somebody's house and it's his daughter's

[00:32:23] birthday party and he his daughter loves dinosaurs. And it gets punctuated by this really great Jurassic Park reference at the end where Charles gets out of there, he gets in the car, and the T-Rex runs out into the driveway and it shouts no! Roaring. And then the sign behind the T-Rex, which has the same font as the Jurassic Park sign, but in Chinese, falls. And as if it's the

[00:33:45] sign that says when dinosaurs rule the earth. I forget what it is, but it turns it into a weird dirty joke or something that he, they're saying when Bruce says it. And he just has a confused look on his face.

[00:35:00] But I thought that's pretty neat.

[00:35:02] And I like when things stylize stuff

[00:35:04] and play around with that kind of stuff.

[00:35:06] That's fun.

[00:35:07] Yeah, absolutely.

[00:35:08] Yeah, I are so great. It's awesome, yeah. I know in episode two, he, Charles, like, derails his mission on the college campus to, like, stop at a churro stand. Yeah, and then questioning the guy, like, how you make churro. Yeah, and then is there long enough, covered in blood that the police show up? And I'm like, that's the conclusion of episode two,

[00:36:20] basically.

[00:36:21] Yes, yeah, which is a great bit.

[00:36:23] And so, yeah, I like that it does give Charles,

[00:36:24] like, the sort of inner life and, like,

[00:36:26] this interest beyond just being a gangster selling drugs and stuff. He's just like, I'm not gonna crack, right? And like as soon as the first detective walks in the room, he's like, okay. And he just like starts listing names, just like instantly folds. Yep, so good. Yes, yeah, that was very good. And so yeah, that whole nightclub sequence, I think is really fun. And like there's a fun like confrontation where when Charles and Bruce finally meet

[00:37:40] at the end there.

[00:37:41] And you know, like Bruce has no idea who he is

[00:37:44] because they've been estranged for so long.

[00:37:45] Like he knows he has a brother

[00:37:47] but like doesn't really can't top it. Always a good time. Yeah. And then yeah. And otherwise, look, I've watched up through episode four. I know, I know about one plot point that happens in episode six, which involves, I guess, I think they eventually go to Taiwan, let the go to Taipei. Okay.

[00:39:01] And so I'm not sure if this happens there or if this happens, I guess this probably

[00:39:05] happens while they're still in LA head. I guess like Mindhunter and some of those earlier stuff. But that is the thing. Most of it will be like stuff that isn't really happening on Netflix now. I mean, Bojack Horseman, I think, is like top tier. Yeah, Bojack Horseman, American Vandal, that's top tier. That's good stuff.

[00:40:20] Unjustly canceled, American Vandal.

[00:40:23] Yeah, Mindhunter would be a good choice.

[00:40:25] Stranger Things, still running and I can hate whatever I guess.

[00:41:43] At least they finished the story, air quotes.

[00:41:45] That's good.

[00:41:46] Yes, that, yeah. Yeah, just like those characters in particular, their stuff felt very, the brother son felt very close to that energy that the best had. Right, yeah, I got that for sure. They still got the Witcher, that's still coming out. They still got Bridgerton. Bridgerton's a big show. That's a big show, yeah. Never watched it. Jenny in Georgia, I hear is popular.

[00:43:01] You just made up something, that's not real.

[00:43:03] My girlfriend watches it, that's not a,

[00:43:05] I didn't make that one up.

[00:43:07] They have a Lincoln times. Yeah, I think yeah. I think every time I come Wednesday comes up like, Oh, yeah, Mike T. Yeah, I think he likes that. You like that, right? Never watched it. I'm sure it's fine. Yes. Oh, blue eyes, samurai is also an Netflix thing. So great thing ever. Yeah, I knew you like that. I have not seen it, but I'm sure it's great. Do it. Push play.

[00:44:22] Okay, fair enough. So yeah, Netflix does have some good stuff,

[00:44:25] but it is largely drowned out by employee runs basically. And it's 25 seats. And once that movie gets in, you got like two hours to kill. And so both I think American born Chinese, my plan was like, Oh, whenever I

[00:45:40] have time to kill him, the annex, I'll watch American born Chinese. And I haven't gotten

[00:45:43] around to it. And now rather soon, I'm like, will be like on a separate tab of the site, or whatever it is, just because, yeah, I'm not sure how that works. I don't want to like, you know, my movie, like I don't want to just see people like logging individual episodes of Friends. Like that's what I fear, you know? There's no way they're gonna promote and like make a big deal about adding TV shows

[00:47:01] and not force it in our faces.

[00:47:02] No way.

[00:47:03] No way.

[00:47:05] Neurotrust.

[00:47:06] Yeah, fair enough.

[00:47:07] We will see what happens.
