Emergency Podcast: Shrek 5 is Happening

We did it, people... after years of using the idea of Shrek 5 as an in-joke on the podcast, Dreamworks Animation has officially dated the fifth SHREK movie for July 1st, 2026 with the original cast returning. Naturally, we had to weigh in on what this means for the future of our podcast... and the world.

[00:00:00] Hello and welcome to a special Bonus Episode of Mike and Mike go to the movies, and this is really a, I say, a bonus episode, more of an emergency podcast. Mike, yes, yes.

[00:00:39] We've smashed the glass and hit the big red button. Emergency, the sirens are sounding. Jeff Goldblum is running down a hallway and he's bustling open a door and he's yelling, it's called Shrek 5.

[00:00:52] I was not expecting a right stuff reference in our Shrek 5 emergency. But that's what you get with Mike and Mike go to the movies. Right. Now we're linked to complete works, but officially in this episode, this, this feed. So we can make, we can make complete works references anytime we want.

[00:01:07] Yes, absolutely. So this is not a planned episode of the show and it's not going to be a long thing by any means. We just felt like we had to comment on the fact that Shrek 5 has officially been dated again.

[00:01:21] Again, yeah. But it seems like it's actually happening this time. It feels more real this time. It feels more real. So for some background on this, this almost 10 year long running bit on the podcast way way back in the early days of this podcast Mike and I used to do a film news segment.

[00:01:41] We talked about all the upcoming new things like, you know, all the news stories that happened in the past week and all that kind of stuff. And one story in particular was about Shrek 5. This was back in like 2016.

[00:01:53] Yeah. I wonder if that one Twitter account is still active and what they're up to right now. It was like a countdown to Shrek 5's release date or something like that.

[00:02:01] Yeah, from the first release date. Yes, which they had dated then for like, you know, 2018 or something like that, right? Something like something way in the past. Oh my god. So I found I found the account it's at Shrek the number five.

[00:02:17] And then I VE. So Shrek 5, but on their last two years from September 2019 and that's it said up to the talking team. Once there's more news about a release date. Okay. I wonder if they're getting spammed.

[00:02:29] I would imagine. I mean, we kept getting spammed with the news. I got to imagine the official Shrek 5 countdown Twitter account has got to be getting spammed with this. But yeah. So we talked about a Shrek 5 announcement way back in the day.

[00:02:43] I think in like 2015, 2016 and it became like we're occurring joke on the podcast partially causing you know that the date could get and pushed out. And partially because just like I don't know the idea of Shrek 5 seemed delightful and ludicrous to us at the same time. Yes.

[00:02:56] Yeah, it was just a good little goof. Yes. It was a kind of a goof and it was a running joke on the podcast for a few years. It's not something we've really referenced all that much in the last few years.

[00:03:07] Right. I mean, we've kind of put our Shrek 5 jokes to bed. Yeah. I feel like it came up again recently, probably around when the I feel like maybe Mike Myers or somebody was like a Nounster said something about like, oh yeah, we're thinking about it.

[00:03:22] I know we talked about it when you saw Puss and Boots 2 because there was a tease to a potential Shrek 5 in that movie, right? Yes.

[00:03:30] Yeah, and I'm looking at the Shrek 5 countdown Twitter account again. And in the bio, it says estimated release date to be May 2019 so that wasn't being the original one.

[00:03:39] Okay. And then like I said September 2019, they're counting down up until then is over a hundred days. So like they started counting down again and started it's and then stopped in September 2019 said last I heard maybe early 2020.

[00:03:52] So yeah, so I feel like I got pushed back to 2019 and then 20 20 and then here we are now in 2024 with another official release date of 26.

[00:04:01] Yeah. But this time, it addition to just a release date. I also did release like a small teaser video, which is just the Shrek like a 5 with Shrek years on it. And while all star is playing, so it's hard getting back to the original Shrek.

[00:04:15] Yeah. And yeah, the release date is July 1st, 2026. So about two years from now and they have confirmed that Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz are all returning for Shrek 5,

[00:04:26] which I think when we talked about it back in the day, that was sort of up in the year. I feel like that back then was like, oh, we're trying to do Shrek 5, but we're not sure if the original cast will be back or if it'll be new people or whatever it is.

[00:04:37] So yeah, now they have the original cast back. They are apparently doing it. It's happening. It's apparently happening as the tagline says the all star is back or the all stars are back or something.

[00:04:47] Yeah, I think the all stars back is what is what the tagline says, which pretty good tagline. It's a good. I'm going to make a bold prediction here, Mike. Okay on the record on the record you can check check back on this in two years.

[00:05:01] I think that Shrek 5 will be one of the five highest grossing movies of all time. I think it's coming for avatar and avatar wave water. And not sure what's going to be avatar and avatar too. Those are like numbers one and two, right? That's fine.

[00:05:16] I think so. Yeah, but I do think it could be the biggest grossing movie domestically in America. Like the number one highest grossing movie in the US which is not an avatar movie right now.

[00:05:26] The number one highest gross movie in the US right now is still star wars the force of wagons. Okay, interesting. I think Shrek 5 could take on star wars the force of wicked. Yes. In America. I take the view of the poor James Cameron's and then whoever directs Shrek 5.

[00:05:43] That's my bold prediction. I feel like, I don't know the hype for Shrek. There is a generation of people who love Shrek that have been Shrekless for so. Yeah, well, I mean there's the Shrek. The musical was very big and popular. I'm brought by everything.

[00:05:59] Yeah, it's the Shrek Assants has never, never ended. Not that we ever went anywhere. Exactly. Yeah, I mean there were four Shrek movies. The first one was in 2001.

[00:06:09] The last one was in 2010. So by the time this movie comes out it will have been 16 years since the previous Shrek movie. It will have been 25 years since the original Shrek. Wow, that's prime legacy called territory.

[00:06:22] That's what I'm saying. I think everybody who grew up on Shrek is probably going to go see this movie and they'll be taking their kids who are their grandkids. The guy who's from the hand show. This isn't your granddaddy Shrek anymore. This is Shrek 5.

[00:06:36] Yeah, and just to be clear, what's your relationship with the Shrek series? Mike, are you fan of it at all? Yeah, I mean, guys go back and listen to our person beats the last wish. That's true. We were both thick fans of person boots too.

[00:06:51] Which you made me watch a few months ago actually. Yeah, and that shit rocked for no reason. I had no reason to be so good.

[00:06:56] Yeah, I mean, it just be very funny if this exists. And we actually have to talk about it and somehow pay us off a tender bit. Yes. So the reason we're doing this podcast, this kind of emergency broadcast announcements.

[00:07:08] We're sending out an amper alert telling people that the Shrek 5 thing is happening. The reason we're doing this is because I'm putting it on the record now.

[00:07:16] We've talked about this for many years and we have said that if Shrek 5 ever actually happens, we will do a Shrek perspective on the podcast. Yes, we will. We have to do probably an episode on each film in the series.

[00:07:30] I mean, we might as well go as big as possible. Yeah, right? I mean, this has to be, you know, this has to be a month's long project for going to be doing it.

[00:07:37] My ideal situation Mike would be if the Roy Shatter season wraps up and we have just enough time to treat Shrek like the fifth actor of this. Oh, I'm really serious. Incredible. If like I'm watching Shrek 2 and they're in the podcast, I can be like,

[00:07:52] I don't know what you think of Shrek in this movie. Why don't you think it's for four of that? That's, I think that'd be amazing. Because we have to find, oh man, what's the Christmas special? I've talked about it on here before. I should Shrek the Halls.

[00:08:04] Shrek the Halls, which I've seen and we couldn't, I could only find a version that was in Russian with English subtitles. So I don't know who that seemed the English version of it.

[00:08:14] Yeah, I mean, and we would have to insist on doing all of these short songs like the TV shorts. So Shrek the Halls, I think like, I think there's a donkey centric Christmas special too. Like a donkey's Christmas spectacular or something like that.

[00:08:26] We have to find some kind of bootleg of Shrek 4D, which is the Universal Ride. Oh, God. Which I've seen Shrek 4D once or twice. I don't know if I'd actually aired it on TV too, but yeah, Shrek 4D, Shrek the Halls.

[00:08:38] There's I think some tie-in to Shrek 4 with the little ogre kids. I've also never seen Shrek 4, Shrek forever after. So yeah, well, that's what I don't know. I think, I mean, what I remember about the Shrek series is that, you know, the first one huge, massive success,

[00:08:55] to movie, second one even bigger. Shrek 2, it couldn't be stopped. I think that was like the third highest gross movie of that year or something, which Shrek 2. And Shrek 1 was such a massive cultural thing. It won the first best animated feature Oscar. Right.

[00:09:11] And I think that's a great thing. So I think that's the biggest thing that's really, really big. But I remember the consensus being like, this is kind of a step down for Shrek 1 and 2. Correct. You know, and I saw Shrek 3 in theaters.

[00:09:21] I think I liked it, but I definitely, you know, Shrek 1 and 2. I mean, Shrek 2 introduces person boots. It's incredible. It's a good change of paradigm. Yeah. And Shrek forever after by that time I was 17 and I was like, I'm not going to the theater to see Shrek 4.

[00:09:35] It's not so. And I think like the box office for that one also kind of reflected. Like, yeah, it's on kind of a down swing, which is why they never really went forward with Shrek 5 after that maybe.

[00:09:45] I think forever after was kind of meant to be like a sort of finale. But now it's back. Shrek 5. It's happening. Let's go print that money. Let's do it. So yeah, we just wanted this podcast out there to say that yes, we are aware that they have

[00:09:59] announced a release date for Shrek 5. We still got some time. July 1st, 2026. We had time to plan out the Shrek perspective and really do it right. Yeah, that's the goal. And so we'll see what happens and he delays that may occur. We'll keep people appraised on those.

[00:10:15] I'm sure those are coming to. But yeah, right now July 26. We're going to see Shrek 5 which I just saw a tweet earlier. Shrek 5 and Toy Story 5. Now coming out in the same summer. Oh my god. Man. Wild. And I think, you know, I'm not sure.

[00:10:29] I love Toy Story. I definitely love Toy Story more than Shrek. But yeah. I don't know. Toy Story 5. What are we doing that for? I feel like we can do it. Like this is like it's been 25 years. Yeah, there's been 25 years or 16 years since the last one.

[00:10:42] Toy Story 4 was like five years ago. I don't know. And definitely Toy Story 3 was like the end and then Toy Story 4 was like, this is definitely the end. Yes. We're for sure done now. We promise. Yes. So yeah, Toy Story 5 and Shrek 5 both coming in summer 2026.

[00:10:58] So get ready because it's going to be a lot of Shrek talk on this podcast in the years to come. We're going to be a series of stories about Toy Story 5. We're going to be a series of stories about Toy Story 5. Yeah, it won't be film news.

[00:11:08] It will be Shrek 5 updates. Yeah. It'll just be like, oh yeah, here's who's been added to the cast. Here's where we're at with Storyboarding. You know. We're going to get like, you know, Storyboard artists to be on the podcast. Yeah.

[00:11:22] Tell me about the process and all that stuff which we really fun. If we capitalize on it now, we can be the premier Shrek 5 podcast. We already have it. We've been capitalizing on it since 2015. That's true. That's very true. So there you go.

[00:11:35] Just want to give our updates. Shrek 5. It's happening and we wanted to throw the steps out there to let people know if in case they didn't see it on Twitter. Shrek 5. July 1st, 2026. Mark your calendars. There will be Mike Mike stuff happening surrounding it. Yes.

[00:11:51] The All Stars are back.
