It's time for another Mike Makes Mike Watch! This week, Mike D is making Smith watch the Ridley Scott war film with an insane early 2000s cast, BLACK HAWK DOWN! Meanwhile, Smith is making Mike D experience Chevy Chase in the classic comedy noir FLETCH!
[00:00:02] Let's get together, talk about the movies that we saw this week We'll have discussions, talk film news, we'll laugh a lot and act like geeks Sometimes we'll have a guest or two, sometimes it's just the two of us Let's crack some jokes and tell some folks to come along and hang with us Mike and When I go home, people ask me Hey Mike, why do you do it man?
[00:00:32] What, you some kind of podcast junkie? You know what I'll say? I won't say a goddamn word Why? They won't understand They won't understand why we listen They won't understand that it's about Mike and my go to the movies and that's it That's all it is I'm Mike Smith and join me as always is someone who's with the Mattress Police Mike DiCruccio How you doing today Mike? I'm doing great, I'm glad you didn't pick the blackface one to reference, good job I guess he's not in blackface, he just has an afro Uh, yeah, fair enough
[00:01:01] You're referring to Fletch, I'm assuming, right? Yes, yes Okay, so I made you watch Fletch and I was really hoping to get the chance to re-watch it before the podcast but it's been a very long time since I've seen it I didn't get that chance Okay, okay So, right off the bat, just letting people know That'll be a one-sided conversation Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah Yeah, I mean, it's questionable You know, he has a dream where he's on the Lakers Okay And he comes off the bench and it cuts, like it cuts to him taking the track suit off to get off the bench and he's got a giant afro
[00:01:30] And I was like, well, you know, I can't really tell Well, because it's also like looking at a TV So it's like kind of grainy, 80s, fuzzy TV So I'm like, I can't really What kind of color is Chevy Chase right now? I'm not 100% sure But I don't think he's actually in blackface But, you know, questionable Yeah, questionable for sure How are you doing today, Mike? What's been going on? Other than that, great Yeah, pretty good Here we are I'm excited for today's discussion because we cooked up quite a double feature here by accident again and Mike might go to the movies
[00:01:59] Yeah, I'm going to struggle to find the connecting tissue for this one I gotta be honest This might be the hardest Well, I mean, well, okay Second hardest, of course The one we'll be talking about for the rest of Podcast Eternity with Free Willy and Lost Highway Right That's the hardest one Yeah But, yeah, we cooked up a pretty good one How are you today, though? I'm good, yeah No, we're doing another Mike Makes Mike Watch episode I have finally gotten through the bulk of my baseball season here in Missoula We finally got through the home stretch
[00:02:28] There's still a few games left and there's still a few other scattered events for the next month or so but it's not going to be as intense of a schedule anymore which means I can finally rest a little bit Nice I slept until 10.30 yesterday and it was amazing Hell yeah I'm happy for you I have to know, though Did you root for the home team? And buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jacks Always Always, Mike Good, good, good Yes, and I've heard that song many times this summer In fact
[00:02:56] I can imagine every seven innings you hear it Roughly Yeah, just about, actually But, yeah, no So I'm finally gonna My schedule's opening up a little bit more so we'll be able to get the podcast out with a little more regularity I know this past summer we've had Complete Works episodes coming out pretty regularly almost every week I did miss one week recently But Mike and Mike has definitely I think slowed down a little bit We've released fewer episodes of this podcast I guess because we just haven't had the time to do it
[00:03:26] Yeah, yeah I mean, technically these are bonus episodes So you're lucky if you get them Exactly You should be grateful That's right That you get these Yeah But we do try to get them out with some regularity and usually when we record these ones they're out a lot faster, too Yeah Well, like this will be out this week most likely But, yeah, every month we try to do a Mike Makes Mike watch and I think we've succeeded in that but July 1 might have come out in early August but that's fine Who's counting, you know? Yeah, exactly
[00:03:54] Maybe we didn't do every single syllable, right? But basically we got it And so today on the podcast we're doing a Mike Makes Mike watch in which I make Mike D watch something he's never seen before He makes me watch something that I've never seen before Ideally, we both watch both movies but sometimes we can't make the time for the other person's movie like the person that we're making the other person watch So unfortunately I did not get to re-watch the movie I made Mike D watch which was 1985's Fletch starring Chevy Chase and directed by Michael Ritchie
[00:04:23] However, you were able to watch both right, Mike? I was, yeah I also apologize for picking the second month in a row a two and a half hour plus epic war movie Sorry Maybe I should look at these details when I pick these movies Yeah Absolutely, yeah So I'm making Mike D watch Fletch Meanwhile, he's making me watch Black Hawk Down from 2001 directed by Ridley Scott Slightly different tone I think to Fletch You can see It is safe to say But what if Fletch was in Black Hawk Down?
[00:04:53] I bet he would get up to some shenanigans He might have been able to talk his way out of this whole situation That's what I'm saying Yeah, I think he could have solved the whole crisis out there But alright Which of these movies do you want to talk about first, Mike? I guess Black Hawk Down If you were to watch these two together you should definitely end on Fletch So I guess let's watch or talk about Black Hawk Down You would want to cool down with Fletch especially because I think Fletch is like less than 90 minutes, right? It's like just about, right? Yeah, like an hour 38 or something like that Yeah Okay, yeah, very short So Black Hawk Down
[00:05:22] a little bit longer So yeah, let's do it It's time for a Mike Makes Mike Watch I hope they choose right Mike's watching Mike's movie Actually Whoa You shouldn't have come here This is our war Not yours
[00:05:51] 300,000 dead and counting That's not a war Mr. Hito It's genocide These people they have no food We can either help or we can sit back and watch a country destroy itself on CNN Rangers Deltas Today we go Name Blackburn Date of birth 22775 I was trained to fight You joined the fight, Sergeant? I was trained to make a difference So guess what? You're going out today What? That's what you wanted, isn't it? Oh yeah
[00:06:24] Hell yeah Just remember when everybody else is shooting shooting the same direction All right That was from the trailer for Black Hawk Down directed by Ridley Scott from the year 2001 starring a huge ensemble cast of people including people like Josh Hartnett Ewan McGregor William Fichtner Sam Shepard You know people like Orlando Bloom and Tom Hardy in like really early roles Eric Bana Eric Bana Nicolai Koster-Waldau is in this movie You know Jerry Piven How could you forget? Ty Varel Ty Varel Yeah
[00:06:53] Every single person you see in Black Hawk Down is someone Yeah Which is pretty wild But Mike D why did you want to make me watch Black Hawk Down? Well I think it came out of sort of us discussing I mean I sort of realized last month I think when we were talking about after the episode like oh wait there's like a whole a whole period genre movie or period of movies in this genre that you missed Yeah And that's that kind of late 90s or mid to mid-aughts
[00:07:23] like war film like The Patriot like Black Hawk Down Sure These kind of just like I don't know like dad movies I guess I don't really not necessarily but I can confirm my dad owned this movie on DVD Yeah I mean mine do for sure Gladiator though even though it's not the same thing but it's this period Ridley Scott so like it's just like this kind of weird like oh weird blind spot that you seem to have missed somehow and just maybe not that interested in but that like in my house at least was like we watch these movies all the time you know kind of deal so I was like oh this will be a fun
[00:07:52] like you know sort of like The Whirl and Emmerich project it'll be like oh a fun project to be like oh I can reliably go to this era and find a movie that Mike hasn't seen and I remember this being sort of one of the ones that's like oh this is like the serious prestige like or whatever kind of drama action movie thing and so that was part of why I picked it and plus I knew you hadn't seen it so sometimes it's hard if I go broadly to these couple years in this kind of movie Mike probably hasn't seen it so that's where Black Hawk Down came from nice
[00:08:22] yeah no so Black Hawk Down you're right I hadn't seen this movie although I am a big fan of Ridley Scott and often a defender of some of his lesser culturally perceived as lesser films let's say I did put Gladiator 2 in my top 10 of 2024 and I stand by it and the movie rules it's incredible crazy you know and Ridley Scott is somebody who as a filmmaker obviously has several like big classics to his name right he directed Alien he directed Blade Runner Gladiator you know some huge titles Thelma and Louise
[00:08:51] big Ridley Scott movie right and then he also has a lot of other movies that he has directed and I think the fun of being kind of a Ridley Scott fan is that you never know what you're gonna get you know every movie is a gamble and sometimes it's a you know cold masterpiece you know The Last Duel one of my favorite movies the last like 5 or 6 years that movie is awesome it rules yeah his next movie Napoleon I think less good you know not as good I like it
[00:09:20] I liked Napoleon enough but I didn't love it and then House of Gucci was like 2 months later and that movie's not very good you know so there's a anything can happen with a Ridley Scott joint right the guy works is what we're saying the guy works he's constantly making movies he has a new one coming out in a couple weeks actually the Dog Stars which is like a post-apocalyptic dystopian film with Jacob Elordi and Margaret Qualley I think it looks pretty good I'm excited to see it you know but yeah for whatever reason Black Hawk Down was never a movie
[00:09:49] that I went back to and I think it's because in general war movies are sometimes tough for me and I feel like I've talked about this in the podcast before where it's it's not that I I mean in general yes I am anti-war I am not anti-war movie necessarily because there are war movies that I really love you know Apocalypse Now Save and Private Ryan these are great love them you know all that stuff I often find that when a war movie is just the war stuff when it's like very prolonged war stuff
[00:10:19] that can sometimes be where I'm like alright this feels like it's repeating the same thing over and over again sometimes it's you know I think most war movies are in their own way anti-war movies however sometimes they feel more jingoistic than others and this movie I will say especially this is one of the most George W. Bush movies ever made oh my god it's that drill tweet of like cranking the racism knob and looking back at the audience for approval like yeah holy shit yeah no this is this came out in 2001 which I think is maybe why it was such a big deal at the time because this movie
[00:10:49] was kind of a big deal at the time I think partially because this was a year after Gladiator came out which just won Best Picture with the Oscars Ridley Scott was nominated for Best Director for this movie again and it won Best Film Editing and Best Sound this was not nominated for Best Picture but Ridley Scott was nominated for Director wow and so you know it was a movie that people were paying attention to it was a big thing you know all that stuff and I will say I will say I liked this movie Mike I'm gonna throw that out there oh okay twist a lot more than The Patriot I'll tell you that much yeah fair you know and I think part of it is that
[00:11:18] Ridley Scott is somebody who I think is incredibly good at directing battle sequences yeah you know he's really really good at depicting wartime sequences and even in something like Napoleon that movie has like incredibly staged battles and The Last Duel has incredibly staged battles and Gladiator has that Kingdom of Heaven has that but I feel like he's mostly well known for his like period peace battles and this is like a much more modern you know sense of war and battle you know it takes place in 1993 but it was released in 2001 so technically it is a period peace
[00:11:48] but you know it's modern warfare essentially right it's what's happening like pretty currently and Ridley Scott directs that stuff incredibly well I do think like a lot of these other movies it gets a little repetitive for me after a while you know and I think of something like Alex Garland's Warfare which is a movie I kind of like bounced off of I think of something like Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk which is good and I think a lot of people think it's like among his best movies and for me it's like pretty low on the Nolan ranking because it's like that's crazy I like it it's good it's no inception it's no tenet you know
[00:12:18] that's a crazy statement it's no tenet man it's not some cowboy shit it's I'll see you at the beginning my friend that's right yeah no Dunkirk I like it's good but it's like it's again it's one of those movies that's like oh the entire movie is just the war stuff and I think what separates Black Hawk down a little bit for me is that the first 45 minutes are really good character building and setup yeah you know and it's similar to a movie we just talked about The Faculty which will be coming out in a few weeks so that episode for The Complete Works but everybody's in this movie so like everybody is
[00:12:47] like a recognizable face which is sometimes a problem for war movies for me because you know everybody's in camo everybody's like a young white guy in their mid-twenties and sometimes they can be difficult to distinguish from each other Black Hawk Down doesn't really have that problem because that's Josh Hartnett that's Ewan McGregor like you know who these guys are which helps out a little bit they have distinctive faces you know who these guys are and I think the first 45 minutes do a really good job of setting up all these guys characters it makes you feel sympathetic towards all of them in different ways you know and some of it's like very simple stuff like this guy
[00:13:17] has a girl back home or whatever like this guy has a family which is stuff you see in every war movie but I think they do a good job of hitting that with every single character so that when those characters do die you do still feel something for them like it's not just like they don't do that with like one guy and like oh well that's the guy that dies it's like oh everybody has like something that they want to come back home to right that's sort of the thing so yeah and also it's a lot of great character actors just chewing scenery and doing their thing there's stuff with William Fickner which is great the stuff with Sam Shepard you know interrogating that one guy at the beginning
[00:13:46] I was locked in man that was great it's so good so yeah no I enjoyed Black Hawk Down I do think it's a little bit repetitive once the actual war stuff starts happening there's great stuff in there there's a lot of great moments and there's a lot of like very intense moments again I bounced off it a little bit because it feels pretty jingoistic in different ways just very like post 9-11 2001 specific ways that I kind of bounce off of but I did ultimately like the movie and I think the war stuff's great and I think the setup
[00:14:15] for it is really effective yeah well it's so interesting I didn't even really think about the 2001 of it all but I wonder what the timing of that all is like I don't know when in 2001 it came out but like obviously they were already making this movie when 9-11 happened if it's like you know this movie Black Hawk Down was released in limited release on December 28th 2001 wide release in January so yeah like three months after 9-11 which I think explains why it was as big as it was you know I think it definitely feeds into that post 9-11
[00:14:45] kind of narrative right for sure for sure yeah I mean you know it's the whole weird thing like if you want to portray or sorry if you want like the participation slash assistance or whatever of the US Army like the Pentagon has to approve your script and like gets a pass at it to make sure everybody is portrayed accurately or you know in alignment with the whatever you know with the propaganda needs of the country basically and then we'll allow you to donate tanks and stuff and you know equipment and you can use our insignias
[00:15:15] and all that and if they don't do that you don't get to use any of that shit so like obviously big Hollywood productions always have that weird partnership they have to have with the Department of Defense and stuff so yeah it's crazy that this movie on one hand is absolutely you know the it's the like classic war movie paradox like it's depicting the horrors of war but like also when they roll out a base for the first time it's set to Stevie Ray Vaughan's cover of Voodoo Child and it's the coolest fucking shit you've ever seen like so it's both it's both of these things like the
[00:15:44] the like top military brass is portrayed as like completely fucking inept and they've been there for three weeks longer than they mean to be and they can't make a decision because they have to run it up the bureaucracy all the nonsense and the UN is useless and all like all this crap and so they all end up in this giant clusterfuck because nobody knows what's going on but like also the brave stoicism and heroism portrayed by the American troops and just you could hear like you know the Star Spangled Banner playing in the background like you know and if it weren't for our brave men
[00:16:13] over you know in uniform blah blah blah so yeah it's a little bit of both for that and I also kind of like forgot I hadn't seen this movie in a really long time like since college at least so I kind of forgot all that aspect of it and how it is just you know a hundred white dudes killing a thousand Somali people like it's just like insane like what's happening and their depiction of as just like sort of brutal like monster savages you know and whatever yeah it's a civil war that was ongoing that we inserted ourselves into because it's a humanitarian crisis and all that stuff
[00:16:43] but like did a thousand people need to die I don't know like that seems excessive so there's that part of it but like also I don't know you know it's kind of intense and cool and actiony and that's also the weird paradox of these movies are like but the action's cool I think this looks more like a Tony Scott movie than a Ridley Scott movie that's an interesting point actually yeah because it's a lot of like handheld like shaky kind of camera like a lot of like very tight close up sort of thing right yeah and weird color grading and the editing is kind of choppy sometimes and like there's lots of moments
[00:17:13] where like the like frame is like partially obscured so like some of it is like faded or black at the top and so you can't really see what's going on like there's just like weird stylistic touches that I feel like are more in line with the Tony Scott vision than the Ridley Scott vision typically yeah which you know would have been happening around that time but Tony Scott was one of those guys who like really got into digital filmmaking pretty early like at the advent yeah yeah at the advent of it and so you have stuff like man on fire and deja vu that have a very distinctive
[00:17:42] look because they're like very early like digital film and I feel like Ridley may have been shooting digitally I'm sure he probably shoots movie digitally in 2001 I don't really know yeah now for sure I'm sure but yeah I wonder about that and I wonder if like maybe he was trying to evoke seems like much more of a kinetic filmmaker yeah like somebody who's like you know drawn to a lot of action stories and drawn to that kind of thing whereas Ridley feels like a much more like classical filmmaker in some sense you know you compare the action
[00:18:12] in something like Gladiator 2 to something like Unstoppable right and it just feels like night and day right these are very different filmmakers doing their thing yeah absolutely so I think it's just interesting in that regard but yeah there's just weird stuff like very of its moment of its like sort of drumming up you know support for the war in Iraq and like all this weird stuff like you know we have to have a cutaway to make sure you know that Somali people are Muslim like you know like it's like you know
[00:18:42] doing the like the call to prayer and all that like you know you just gotta make sure you know that stuff and it's like okay this feels like in feels a little iffy 20 years later you're like oh boy yeah feels iffy and it's weird that like oh they were already making this movie already so you know maybe some stuff got added post 9-11 but you know I would imagine it was probably too late for big changes to happen to Black Hawk Down or anything like that and it is you know based on a true story it is the actual you know thing that happened in 1993 in Mogadishu in which two
[00:19:12] Black Hawk helicopters get shot down and then all the guys have to kind of escape fend for themselves and all that stuff and sort of you know the US kind of trying to rescue those guys and so yeah I don't know it's I liked it again I think it was pretty good I think as far as war movies go and again I don't it's not my genre but I do like a lot of war movies it's probably you know I think it's probably one of the better ones that depicts modern warfare and I guess for me like modern warfare I guess would be anything from
[00:19:41] like the 1990s onward right something like that I feel like you know the Vietnam War is like its own separate subgenre of movies and stuff like that but like you know whenever you're in the 90s and you see like a you know a movie depicting a Gulf War conflict or anything like that or then moving on into like the mid 2000s with Iraq War and stuff like that I feel like there isn't like a ton of like great movies depicting modern stuff I mean obviously recently there was Alex Garland's Warfare which I know people liked and I was kind of you know iffy on that one but were you a fan of Warfare Mike did you see that
[00:20:11] I did see it yeah it was okay I don't know it was like a little you know I only watched it the once and kind of just because I'm a fan of Alex Garland I was not big on Civil War at the time so I was like well let me give this another shot this like whole weird project seems very interesting so I don't know if it was like successful or what's even really make of that but that's another movie where it's like oh these 15 guys are all major or like about to be major people you know I forget all of them but yeah I mean one of them is Cooper Hoffman I think in Warfare right yeah I want to say there's a couple
[00:20:40] of guys yeah so that's interesting definitely not to the degree that Black Hawk Down is but there's a couple of guys who are in there in Black Hawk Down that's true other than you know like Ewan McGregor and like a couple of Josh Hartnett obviously yeah Josh Hartnett Eric Bana Ewan McGregor and then you got people like Tom Sizemore and William Fichtner and all those guys like obviously those guys yeah but then yeah like you said like Orlando Bloom it's like one of his first movies he's in two scenes basically you know yeah absolutely
[00:21:09] and he has that scene early on with Ewan McGregor which is really great when he's like enlisting and all that stuff that's really good you know and like Tom Hardy this is actually Tom Hardy's first film role that's the first movie he was ever in wow so I think you just don't like Tom Hardy in war movies between this and Dunkirk you just don't yeah no I like him in Dunkirk and I like Dunkirk that's the thing you know you compare Dunkirk to I would say I prefer Dunkirk to Black Hawk Down okay again Dunkirk lower on my Nolan ranking but Nolan is a different scale
[00:21:39] yeah and Ridley Scott filmmaker that I love has made a lot of great movies and in some cases you know like I would say Alien can go like bat for bat with any movie that Nolan's ever made but I think in terms of consistency Nolan is a filmmaker that is like okay every time Nolan comes out with a movie I'm probably gonna really like it you know yeah that's that's sort of how it feels whereas Ridley Scott it's a gamble and that's what's fun about it makes it exciting sometimes you get the Martians sometimes you get Exodus gods and kings you never know what you're gonna get you know holy shit I forgot that's a Ridley Scott movie Exodus yeah I mean what's interesting
[00:22:09] about Exodus because that's a movie that I think is really bad it's just a really boring movie but that's the Moses tale right yeah and you know told in like big biblical Christian Bale or something right it's Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton I want to say are the two main guys I think I think it's Christian Bale as Moses but that is the movie that he made I think right after Tony Scott died and so that movie is dedicated to Tony Scott and it says for Tony at the end of it and that's the most interesting thing about it because it is about like two brothers you know with two extremely different
[00:22:39] worldviews right you know in the Moses tale so that's I think the interesting thing about Exodus gods and kings otherwise that movie stinks it's really boring unfortunately tragic but then you got movies like The Counselor which some people hated but man I think it kind of rocks you know like that kind of thing that's the that's the beauty of a Ridley Scott joint you never know yeah and I feel like this is one of the bigger titles in the Ridley Scott career I wouldn't say it's as big as like an alien or Blade Runner or Gladiator but like if you go to like the second tier down I feel like Black Hawk Down would be in there right yeah I think so I think maybe people don't know like
[00:23:08] broader people like don't realize it's a Ridley Scott movie because I think Black Hawk Down like as a title as a thing as like the real life event you know all that stuff like I think is pretty well known in the culture right you know it's like sort of recent I mean I guess now it's almost 30 years ago but like you know recent thing in the culture historical event but like maybe people don't know like that's a that's Ridley Scott movie yeah so that's interesting but I think I remember the last time I watched it in college my friends and I were like oh man we should like watch Black like put on Black Hawk Down like it was like
[00:23:38] one of the more action-y war movies and it just really brought the room down you know it's kind of a bummer man it's pretty much a bummer yeah and I just like that was the thing that I think maybe I kind of forgot or like you know makes it a little bit different sort of from those kind of other movies I don't know what other movies I'm sort of thinking about because like you said almost all war movies are about the war is hell and you know the kind of thing and the kind of senselessness of it all and this movie definitely is about that also but it's definitely not one of the more
[00:24:08] I don't want to say exciting movies like that but it is the action is exciting or intense or whatever but yeah it's very intense and like you feel it like when you're watching the movie absolutely like you feel it along with those guys like it's very close like really well staged because it's Ridley Scott and he's really good at staging that kind of stuff and this is very different than his usual kind of stuff but at the same time you know I think war action can often get kind of repetitive and around the fifth time somebody was like RPG
[00:24:38] you know it's like okay yeah I got it I got it yeah one of the things I do think was really impressive while I was watching it is how I don't say easily but how well staged well depicted well whatever choreographed all of the 25 different groups of soldiers are handled like I knew who like you said I think it helps a lot that these are all very recognizable even in hindsight faces groups together squads that it was like okay I understand
[00:25:08] maybe not like literally on a map like where all these people are but I know like this is Josh Hartnett's group this is Jason Isaac's group this is William Fickner's group this Eric Bana's like it was able to like the geography of all that because this is you know like a 40 person cast and it'd be very easy to just be like I don't know who the fuck or where the fuck any of these people are but you can kind of follow it except there is a point that I laughed pretty hard in the middle of the movie sort of like after the Black Hawk has gone down which my friends and I were like they said the thing every time they say they say it
[00:25:37] so many times and they're like securing the courtyard or the intersection where the helicopter is crashed and they have like one of the other guys that's in the room with Sam Shepard who I forget who it is like turn to Sam Shepard and then literally they do literally point out a map at that point and they're like and this is where his group is and this is where his group is and this is where his even though they've all been in the same room together watching all these things happen in real time it's like why would you need to explain to him he's been sitting next to you right and it's like ah so the audience knows exactly so that was pretty fun but I did think that was
[00:26:06] actually like pretty impressive that it was able like you're kind of able to track and like read where all these people are in relation to each other for most of this movie considering how many different and like oh and the Humvee the Humvee cowboy and the guys in the helicopters and like it's you know it's it's legible basically I guess is impressive yeah absolutely one other thing I want to note too so I assumed that Black Hawk Down was Ridley Scott's follow-up to Gladiator I thought this was his next movie because it was just one year later right but of course Ridley Scott never stops working he released another movie earlier that
[00:26:35] year oh my god which was a Hannibal the Hannibal Lecter movie yeah I think the prequel to uh Silence of the Lambs Red Dragon right I want to say yes well is it a prequel or is Hannibal Rising the prequel this is like a this is a sequel okay yeah I think Red Dragon is a prequel yes okay Red Red Dragon so Manhunter is like the book I think right yeah Red Dragon is the book and then Manhunter became the first movie with Brian Cox and the Michael Mann movie yeah which also rules but yeah Silence of the Lambs was like obviously the big hit like turn Hannibal Lecter into a like a household name huge movie and then I think
[00:27:04] it was this was the follow-up this was the Red Dragons the year after Hannibal came okay got it so Hannibal nine years later or ten years later was the sequel to it and Ridley Scott directed it Julianne Moore played Clarice Starling instead of Jodie Foster and I have actually never seen his Hannibal but I've I've heard it's not good I've heard this is one of the less good ones I yes I've seen this I've also seen Red Dragon I think I don't think I've seen Hannibal there were there was like a brief little moment where I was like I'm getting really into the Hannibal
[00:27:33] movies and I watched Hannibal and Julianne Moore is like trying to do the southern accent thing like that Jodie Foster it's like this is not you're kind of with that work yeah and then Red Dragon is Ray Fiennes and that's pretty cool and he eats the painting okay that's neat but it's not that great joint Mike's guy yeah rough it's not that great either and I was like you know maybe I'm not gonna be a Hannibal guy I don't think I watched the rest of them yeah I mean I heard the TV show is good I do yeah I have meant to watch the TV show at some point but I think it's just crazy that that you know to get off on Hannibal
[00:28:02] tangent that just like Hannibal Lecter is like a pop cultural icon has existed in its weird various forms and like not been that good for a long time yeah other than the show yeah and the show I know is supposed to be great yeah but yeah still around I think are they are they doing some kind of new Hannibal stuff I feel like there's some kind of Hannibal stuff in the works when is there ever not a new Hannibal thing yeah fair enough Anthony Hopkins is still around they could get him to do it yeah but in any case yeah that is Black Hawk Down from 2001 I liked it I was glad to finally cross off the list because
[00:28:32] you know I'm a completionist Mike I like to watch everything and I haven't seen all of Ridley Scott's movies and this I feel I feel like Black Hawk Down was like the biggest title on my Ridley Scott list that I hadn't seen okay makes sense yeah yeah so now I was able to cross it off I think now the biggest title I want to say it's G.I. Jane I feel like G.I. Jane might be like the biggest Ridley Scott movie now that I have yet to see I didn't know that was a Ridley Scott movie it sure is yeah Demi Moore brought back into the public consciousness with the Will Smith slap slap yeah Jesus Christ yeah yeah yeah yeah so but I was thinking about it today
[00:29:02] because I had like you know we were I knew we were recording this and I was like oh next year what other one of these kind of movies could I like pick for you to watch but I I don't really know if there's any other good ones like a war movie that you think I might be into I mean like they're kind of like late 90s or mid aughts period like this like specific period like the Patriot and Black Hawk Down kind of era because I don't know the other only other one I was thinking of is we were soldiers which is a unfortunately Mel Gibson Vietnam movie so I don't really want to pick that one this guy loves Mel Gibson
[00:29:31] I don't really want to pick that one again another Mel Gibson movie so I mean that is one I haven't seen so you are right that I haven't seen we were soldiers yeah I'm gonna have to look around that era have you seen you've seen Pearl Harbor of short I've seen bits of Pearl Harbor but man it seemed bad and you know it's the it's the Michael Bay of Pearl Harbor is what you're talking about yeah yeah yeah Michael Bay but Josh Hartnett's in it it's true this is becoming a Josh Hartnett podcast yeah I don't know I don't
[00:30:01] really like that I mean we did like that movie a lot growing up there was one of the first DVDs we bought okay and it was one of the the two disc DVDs okay I mean I would be curious to watch it again because you know I'm a completionist I have not seen all of Michael Bay's films and Pearl Harbor is one that I haven't seen and I do like Michael Bay in certain situations The Rock rules The Rock's incredible Pain and Gain one of the best movies of the last 25 years the movie's amazing I love Pain and Gain that movie's great Ambulance a lot of fun you know I pretty good I like
[00:30:31] I think Michael Bay is you know we've probably talked about this at some point because we talked about everything over the course of 10 years doing this podcast but Michael Bay is somebody who was like decried as the death of cinema for a very long time and now I think you go back and you watch his movies and yes some of them are incomprehensible yes some of them are you know homophobic and misogynistic and all that stuff he is an auteur filmmaker in a landscape in which we don't have as many of those anymore and you know it's still like Michael Bay's making a movie it's going to
[00:31:01] be distinctive it's going to be I feel like I got to check it out when a new one comes out you know yeah in the world of the volume somebody with a vision like really stands out yeah so there's that but yeah I don't know probably not probably not Pearl Harbor but I'm gonna have to take you out of it is that I mean I wasn't yeah I wasn't that into that idea but I would have to you know consult the archives and and see what Phil else falls into this kind of time period and genre that I could pick for you next year absolutely yeah well we got a few more months until we figure out the 2027 lineup but I have a running list of movies for you Mike
[00:31:31] and I think I think we got some good stuff going and I'm sure you have a few for me that you've been thinking about as well yeah I've got I've got I think about eight picked out for next year already so I'm like just trying to fill in you know yeah absolutely I mean what was the movie you were gonna make me watch and then you stopped because you didn't want to do two Luke Wilson comedies in a row because I think we did old school and then you're gonna make me watch another one and then you realized it was gonna be two Luke Wilsons in a row and you're like I gotta change this somehow Blue Streak Blue Streak you could put Blue Streak back I could bring Blue Streak back you're right yeah for sure
[00:32:01] all right should we should we wrap up Black Hawk Down Mike and move on into the movie I made you watch oh yes yeah I'm sorry but I'm glad you I'm glad you liked it because when I was watching it I was one two and a half hours or whatever it is and it's like oh it's a two hour straight battle scene you know it's like seven obviously not real time but like I kind of mentioned it's like you know all takes place in an afternoon kind of thing and I think if this movie was an hour and 45 minutes long I would have loved it I think two and a half hours was a little rough for Black Hawk Down especially so the context in which I watched it I had two straight weeks of baseball games right
[00:32:30] right and I was working like 16 hour days basically for two straight weeks finally had my day off yesterday you know the day before doing the podcast and it's all right time to unwind with Black Hawk dinner but you've you've been the most American the person's ever been American if you went two straight weeks of non-stop baseball games right in the Black Hawk Down that's true man if I watched it right after military appreciation night I might have enlisted on the spot that might have happened right there you'd be recording this in camo right now
[00:33:00] exactly all right let's move on into the movie I made my d-watch which is 1985's Fletch oh for god darn don what is this man saying what is this man doing what can be hell's a matter with you what is this man's name my name is Igor Strabinski hi there I'm a Harry S. Truman I'm Don Corleone they call him Fletch Fletch Fletch
[00:33:29] Fletch Fletch he's good at defending himself better tie your shoelaces disguising himself and getting himself into trouble well let me Fletch go ahead make my day he's a reporter there are no tags on these mattresses who's about to write the story of a lifetime will you kill me sure if he lives all right that was from the trailer for Fletch the film from
[00:33:59] 1985 directed by Michael Ritchie written by Andrew Bergman who also wrote a little movie called I believe guarding tests didn't did he no he did a honeymoon in Vegas honeymoon in Vegas but yeah it was one of the writers on Blazing Saddles and a few other like big comedies in the 80s 90s but yeah honeymoon in Vegas was the one that he directed honeymoon in Vegas actually way back in the day on the Nicolas Cage season and he's a credited writer on another movie that we talked about Mike do you want to guess what it is can I get any
[00:34:28] kind of a hint well I just mentioned Blazing Saddles Mike oh my god no oh yeah because he wrote on Blazing Saddles he wrote Blazing Saddles so he's a credited writer on the Michelio movie Pause the Fury The Legend of Hank the kids movie animated remake of Blazing Saddles holy shit wow but yeah this stars Chevy Chase as well as people like Joe Don Baker Dana Wheeler Nicholson Gina Davis popped up in this all that stuff so I think the reason I wanted to make you watch Fletch Mike is that you hadn't seen
[00:34:56] it and I I think that's genuinely just like you know what I liked Fletch a lot I think as far as the Chevy Chase vehicles of the 70s and 80s go you know I like Caddyshack I like Vacation you know I like those like big Chevy Chase movies I liked Spies Like Us growing up I watched Fletch a few years ago and I was like this is the Chevy Chase movie man this is like the perfect use of Chevy Chase this is like exactly what I would love to have seen more of out of Chevy Chase and I know a couple years ago and maybe this is why we ended up talking about it or
[00:35:26] like why I knew you hadn't seen it there was a new Fletch movie that came out called Confess Fletch which I guess was a closer adaptation of the Fletch books I have not read the Fletch books but Fletch in the 80s kind of evolved into being a little bit more of a smart ass Chevy Chase vehicle sort of thing and Confess Fletch I believe is considered closer John Hamm plays Fletch in that movie and it's a lot of fun I like the movie a lot that's you know does a really good job of like that you know witty hard-boiled dialogue that's sort of like you know weird conspiracy thriller plot all that
[00:35:56] stuff and a lot of people preferred it to the Chevy Chase Fletch but kind of liked the first Fletch more the original Chevy Chase so I wanted to make you watch it and see what you thought of Fletch Mike yeah yeah I had never seen this I also haven't seen Confess Fletch and I kind of want to now I was like oh that'd be interesting you know I've you know a new season of Reacher just started last week so I'm in that kind of like oh you know novel detective like story kind of thing mode I'm back in a reading in a big way get a
[00:36:26] library card check it out nice so that's been fun my library just dumped Canopy and I'm really upset about it that sucks rip we never had Canopy which is lame that's a bummer yeah but get the you know you get the Libby app you can read all your stuff right in your Kindle through the Libby app but so yeah anyway I've been like building up a like wish list of books and stuff to like check out from the library and I was like oh let me let me throw the first Reacher book in there let me throw the first whatever and then I was like maybe should I look for these Fletch books like I know that might be
[00:36:54] fun check those out but yeah I had no idea that he's like a reporter I knew it was like a detective investigator thing or something that's why I was just assuming private private detective kind of thing but yeah he's a reporter and I had no I've known the like disguise thing kind of just culturally osmosis of Fletch and Chevy Chase and like this kind of movie but I wasn't prepared for like how much it's like almost a series of sketches but not quite like there's a story like there's a whole thing going on but like I wasn't prepared for like the elaborate disguises he pulls off
[00:37:23] in some of them and all that which turns into a joke at the end when he hands in like his expenses and they're like what did you need a nun costume in six tubes of super glue and Geena Davis is like oh that was mine like you know stuff like that so that's pretty funny by the end so yeah I ended up having a really fun time with Fletch I was kind of surprised by the like mystery investigation thing at the center of it all I mean the classic always love when a story like this is like two investigations that are seemingly
[00:37:52] unconnected that you know turn out to be the same thing it's like oh hell yeah give me that shit like I just started reading a book that's like like a retired pirate gets pulled out of retirement for one last job and it's like getting the crew back together to go on this like big adventure and it's just like hell yeah give me the tropes stop pretending the tropes aren't cool because the tropes are cool as fuck give me them and that's what this movie is you know it's a lot of that stuff so yeah I had a lot of fun with Fletch I don't know if it's like my favorite you know 80s comedy I guess of the Chevy Chase vehicles like you said it's pretty high up
[00:38:22] there probably Christmas vacation for me just as like the most I've seen or sure seen the most times and all that but yeah Fletch's fun time I was kind of surprised how much it is like Beverly Hills Cop you know where it's kind of like yeah or 48 hours or whatever so like an Eddie Murphy movie where it's like oh he's just gonna come in he's gonna Bugs Bunny his way through this interaction you know whatever fast talk his way in and out get the information he needs and leave the person baffled and that's kind of what's going on in Fletch but but it's fun yeah absolutely yeah so again I didn't get the chance to rewatch this movie and I'm pretty
[00:38:52] bummed about it because if I if I had the choice I mean again I liked Black Hawk Down but after two weeks of baseball games and like me being mentally and emotionally drained and exhausted this would have been the movie I would have preferred to watch absolutely yeah but I saw Fletch a few years ago and just was really taken with it thought it was so fun because Chevy Chase is somebody who again I had seen you know most of the big comedies of the 70s and 80s right your caddy shacks and stuff like that yeah but for me I'm a big community guy and you know Chevy Chase I feel like people you
[00:39:21] know because of his onset behavior on community which you know and his onset behavior and throughout his entire career in his life just just everyone knows that Chevy Chase is an asshole you know you know I feel like sometimes you know the community fans like sort of discount Pierce's role in community whereas I mean a just from a marketing standpoint he was the one person that people knew in the cast of community when that show aired when it premiered but also he's so funny in community it's insane how dare you discount the cultural footprint of soup or talk soup or whatever
[00:39:50] or whatever yes Joel McHale was known for the soup yeah and Ken Jong was just in the hangover oh my god Jesus time is crazy yeah and I remember when the show premiered because I was watching community on day one I was I was ride or die almost immediately you know I was watching the pilot as it aired on TV Ken Jong wasn't even in that first episode yeah but all the commercials for community were but were like Chevy Chase and Ken Jong stars of this show and of course you know community then turned everybody into kind
[00:40:20] of bigger stars later down the line because it was a cult thing but he's so funny in community man Pierce is so good in those like first three seasons of the show and then obviously the onset stuff forced him out and then Dan Harmon came back in and they did kind of write off Pierce's character where they kill him off in season five and I think a pretty fun way like that's one of the best episodes of the show is like the post Pierce's funeral yeah the will reading thing yes the will reading with Walton Goggins is really terrific but you know I think community could have given Chevy Chase like a second life of a
[00:40:50] career if he wasn't such an asshole all the time because he's so funny on community he's so good in it and yeah it's a little bit of a bummer because yeah he's you know you watch something like Christmas Vacation or Fletch and you're like yeah no nobody falls down better than this guy you know nobody that's the thing yeah like there's an aspect of like the in community and all you know other stuff you know I guess every every Chevy Chase project when he falls down and you're like okay we're still doing
[00:41:19] the falling down thing but objectively hilarious every time like it's still good it still works I don't get it I don't understand he was the first like breakout SNL star like he was in the original cast of SNL he left after the first season because he was such a big guy and I think part of it was because he was hosting weekend update and so he got to say I'm Chevy Chase every single week on the show yes but also he was playing Gerald Ford and his whole thing was he fell down a lot right and he was so good at it he was great at it what I like about Fletch is it doesn't rely on that as much I feel like
[00:41:49] Fletch is more about like Chevy Chase with like the smart ass aspect of it and that's I think an underrated aspect of Chevy Chase I think really works for Fletch there's like a moment or two I think particularly like at the end he finally like does fall down and it's like like a it feels like it's a reference to like you've been waiting for me for this to happen like like there's like a like a energy to like I don't know it's just very funny what it does it does eventually happen but yeah this is like kind of fast-talking you know smart ass kind of thing
[00:42:18] aspect of Chevy Chase rather than the the falling physical comedy stuff yeah definitely and he's got a great cast surrounding him it's Joe Don Baker plays the chief right he plays the chief of the newspaper no he's the head the police the okay the police that's actually the drug smuggler all along the chief of police so the movie says a cab you know that's cool there you go yeah Joe Don Baker and Emmett Walsh is in this movie as well yeah who does Emmett Walsh play like he plays so what's the
[00:42:47] it's Tom Matheson Tim Matheson right Tim Matheson's movie yeah Tim Matheson is the guy that hires Fletch to kill him and he tells Fletch I have you know a terminal cancer and like if I commit suicide it'll waive my life insurance policy so like kill me so he can get the my family can get the insurance payout not knowing that Fletch is a investigative reporter and so he starts digging into this and he go he finds out who Tim Matheson's character's doctor is so he schedules an appointment to go to see the doctor to pump
[00:43:16] him for information about uh Tim Matheson and that's who Emmett Walsh plays the uh plays his doctor and of course he's like just making up symptoms and stuff to like prolong the appointment and then and so of course you know it culminates in like a prostate exam joke because of course it does uh but very funny yeah Emmett Walsh is great and he's like everything he says he's like oh how do you know um whatever his name is Brad I forget whatever you know Stanwyck uh and he's like oh we uh play tennis together at the club and he's like oh interesting I also play at that club and he
[00:43:45] just like knows like every information that uh every bit of information Chevy Chase makes up he knows is like fake uh and he's just like gets more and more and more obscure and outlandish because he's like oh I also went to that school like you know it's just like stuff like that it's very funny so yeah and it's it I think that's one of the fun like joys of this movie is like all the sketches air quotes you know kind of the the him talking his way into a situation or where does this guy's or whatever it's like oh that's Emmett Walsh oh that's that guy oh that's the guy from blazing so one of the guys from blazing saddles is the
[00:44:15] the airplane airplane mechanic that he's trying to you know and I was like oh interesting you know stuff like that so that that's pretty fun nice and like Geena Davis oh my gosh yeah incredible uh yeah I remember when I watched this movie for the first time I did not know she was going to be in it and I was like oh like I just got very excited because I'm a big Geena Davis fan and then this is like mid 80s so it's like right when her career is like about to take off really this is the same year as Transylvania six five thousand hell yeah and so but like a year after this is the fly and then there's so much more but uh she's like
[00:44:44] the like the flirty co-worker with Fletch right she's like the one yeah and yeah their chemistry off the charts in this movie she's so good wow yeah I mean just Geena Davis right for sure um but yeah she seems to be like the young kind of like upstart reporter that really looks up to Fletch and so he takes advantage of her like oh well you can go get me this honey like you know kind of thing but like in a kind of funny like camaraderie kind of way uh yeah and like he when he goes off on all of his weird adventures he's he's calling her for help uh you know right like go through the archives and look up this kind of thing uh so that
[00:45:13] that's pretty fun and I forget who the whoever plays the like editor-in-chief or whatever that guy's awesome he's really fun okay he's just riding his riding Fletch's ass the whole time because he's got you got deadlines damn it uh whatever you know whatever it is so that's fun nice yeah otherwise uh I've exhausted uh the stuff that I remember about Fletch uh because it's been a few years so uh what's his name George Wynn oh George Wynn's in this yeah George Wynn's in this yeah he's uh like a heroin dealer you know a dope dealer or whatever uh
[00:45:42] on the beach whatever in Los Angeles yeah um there it's just kind of like a skid road junkies everywhere and that's where Fletch has been hanging out and that's why Tim Matheson thinks he's a junkie to hire him to kill himself you know kill me for the thing because he thinks he's a junkie right um but uh yeah Fletch has been working on this this story about the the drug dealing on the on the beach and where's the supply coming from and how George Wynn is the one of the guys that's always dealing um and all this stuff and it turns out you know the the whole all this stuff is connected but long story short Tim
[00:46:11] Matheson who is a vice president of like an airline or something like a like a private airline okay has been using the planes to go to South America to pick up dope or coke or whatever and bringing it back for a Jordan Baker who's the chief of police who's been supplying George Wynn to sell so it's this like crooked cop drug smuggling ring uh and it's all this you know the the two investigations at first don't seem to be connected but turn out to be the same same thing and yeah Jordan Baker just is this like I mean it's Jordan Baker you know he's
[00:46:38] a violent bastard um uh and he's awesome so I had that kind of thing when the the you know we talk about the credits start on a movie that one of us is making each other watch that we don't know and it's like oh Chevy Chase Tim Matheson Jordan Baker Gina David like everyone every person shows up you're like yeah the the the um what's the guy from WWE uh the meme oh uh Vince McMahon Vince McMahon meme yeah where it's just like better and better and better um so that's very fun and so yeah that's that's kind of
[00:47:06] the the broad plot uh of what he's investigating of course he gets embroiled in all kinds of shenanigans and the cops start chasing him because he's encroaching on their dirty drug dealing and all that stuff it's fun fun stuff yeah there's even a car chase which is pretty cool he steals a Porsche from some kid and they chase him and you're like Chevy Chase is in an action scene what's happening right now yeah absolutely um yeah there was a sequel by the way to the mic there was a movie called Fletch Lives which I've heard is not very good yeah I was like oh let me look at and I went to Letterboxd and everyone like
[00:47:36] the people I follow is like 1.5 to 1.5 yeah all right maybe I'm good I'm good on that one yeah but uh in any case we'll always have Fletch we'll always have Fletch is there anything else about Fletch that you want to give a shout out to Mike before we uh start wrapping the episode up I was surprised how not like put off or annoyed or whatever at Chevy Chase that I was because I'm also one of those community guys that's like well yeah except for Pierce you know yeah whatever but uh but actually it's pretty pretty good in this yeah which is
[00:48:05] neat absolutely uh and I think you should rewatch Community because man Pierce is so funny in the he does rule that one time when he falls into the drum kit great I was just thinking about that actually puts his fist up in the air like biggest laugh of the night yeah I think uh one of my favorite bits is uh when he's trying to like think up jokes I think it's the same episode where he's like trying to think up jokes for the uh the movie they're all about to watch and uh is like what a right-ass room yeah it's like what if they said it's a good day and you said for being gay yeah and Pierce is like laughing
[00:48:34] like now that's what you should be doing they're just all homophobic jokes yeah very funny all right that is Fletch from 1985 uh and that is the end of another Mike makes Mike watch Mike D what is the movie you're making me watch for September next month for September I don't remember if we're back in if we get into horror movie mode yet but I know that's coming okay um no next month September we finally reach daylight daylight is the
[00:49:02] movie the uh the Sylvester Stallone action movie daylight which we have seen the movie daybreak which is a rip off of daylight that Roy Scheider was in her last season of the podcast with Dolph Lundgren right or uh no not Dolph Lundgren no Dolph Lundgren wasn't in that one uh it was Scheider and it was like uh it was the guy who was a hockey player whose son it's the plot of the movie is yeah but it's not Dolph Lundgren Dolph Lundgren was the peacekeeper was the peacekeeper uh but anyway yeah that's daylight or no daybreak uh which is the subways
[00:49:31] in Los Angeles daylight is Sylvester Stallone in the tunnel between New York and New Jersey that collapses and he's the only one that could get those people out of there so I hope you're ready to lock in I'm ready I'm uh excited to check it out I'm making you watch uh the Manchurian Candidate in September the uh the original I believe is uh is what we kind of decided on I've actually never seen the remake but uh you've never seen the original right uh I don't think I've ever seen either actually okay I gotcha yeah Tony Scott the remake obviously the remake is uh Jonathan Demme Jonathan Demme
[00:50:01] yeah the original is uh no the original is uh one of our guys Frankenheim blanket yeah yeah the original is John Frankenheimer joined uh so I didn't think Tony Scott made the movie from 1960 whatever or whatever that uh yeah no the remake is Jonathan Demme I it occurred to me because I haven't seen the remake I was like oh man would be crazy if like I made Mike D watch the original and he made me watch the remake of the same episode uh but no we're doing daylight instead yeah you know who direct do you know who directed daylight I don't Rob Cohen director of the Fast and the
[00:50:31] Furious Fast and the Furious Triple X and the mummy curse of the dragon emperor or whatever okay two of the dragon emperor so one of our guys technically kind of yeah a little bit didn't you uh I was about to say didn't he did Deep Blue Sea but that was Rennie Harlan I think that was Rennie Harlan yeah okay but uh Rob Cohen who also found the sting he was the one who like discovered uh the script for the sting when it came out yes like when the the studio was like looking at scripts he was like 19 years old and read that and was like you guys should make this and they did and it won best picture and so he was like the kid who found the sting for like 20 years and then he's the director of
[00:51:00] Fast and the Furious so same level I think culturally same impact Hollywood's a weird place you know that's just that's how it is sometimes um all right that's gonna bring us to the end of this week's episode of Mike Mike go to the movies Mike D where can we find you online this week you can find me at md film blog on letterboxd and blue sky you can donate to support the show on our ko-fi page ko-fi dot com slash mike and mike pods where you can donate to pick an episode here on the bonus episodes Mike Mike go to the
