[00:00:16] I'm Jackie.

[00:00:17] And I'm Danielle and we're just two best friends and Xbox Buster employees rewatching

[00:00:22] some of the best and worst movies from the late 90s and early 2000s.

[00:00:27] This week we are talking about the 2004 romcom 50 first dates.

[00:00:33] But before we dive in, let's get into some housekeeping.

[00:01:03] Woohoo!

[00:01:04] Yeah, so I'm going to read it just one of them because we got time for all.

[00:01:09] This review is from Issa and it's titled SLEE with multiple exclamation points.

[00:01:17] Such a fun podcast.

[00:01:19] Jackie and Danielle are hilarious and the vibes are a blast.

[00:01:22] It's so nostalgic to think back on the movies that raised me not to mention a great introduction

[00:01:27] to movies I'm not as familiar with.

[00:01:29] Part emoji.

[00:01:30] Oh, that was so nice.

[00:01:33] Thank you Issa.

[00:01:34] Thank you Issa.

[00:01:37] Have you subscribed to our show?

[00:01:59] It's all to fun.

[00:02:00] It's all to make fun of Danielle.

[00:02:03] So join us, won't you?

[00:02:05] Right into the movie, Bree Sinopsis, about 51states, Playboy vet as in veterinarian, not a vet

[00:02:13] as a playboy.

[00:02:14] Henry sets his heart on romantic Lucy but she has short-term memory loss.

[00:02:20] She can't remember anything that happened the day before.

[00:02:24] So every morning Henry has to woo her again.

[00:02:27] Her friends and family are very protective and Henry must convince them that he's in it

[00:02:31] for the love or love or the love, the love, the love that he has to give.

[00:02:40] The movie stars Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Rob Schneider, Blake Clark, Sean Aston and Dan

[00:02:46] Acroid.

[00:02:47] The movie was directed by Peter Siegel and written by George Wing which I think it's really

[00:02:52] funny that the person who directed is a bird and the other one is a part of a bird.

[00:02:57] Just say.

[00:02:58] You can imagine it in heaven.

[00:03:02] It was.

[00:03:03] You can currently watch the movie on stars but before we get started let's get into our ratings

[00:03:10] rewind.

[00:03:11] So you know the drill, before we get into the movie we'll reveal the rating of our Y2K

[00:03:17] versions of ourselves we give.

[00:03:19] Then at the end we'll see if our current selves agree with our initial rating.

[00:03:23] Our scale consists of would buy it, would buy it again.

[00:03:26] The best would play on repeat.

[00:03:28] Five day rental.

[00:03:30] Would watch again.

[00:03:31] Two day rental.

[00:03:32] Okay but nothing to write home about.

[00:03:35] And same day rental.

[00:03:38] Just trash it up.

[00:03:40] Trash.

[00:03:41] Trashy trash trash.

[00:03:42] Trashy trash trash.

[00:03:43] Trashy trash trash.

[00:03:44] Trashy trash trash trash.

[00:03:45] Trashy trash trash.

[00:03:46] Trash.

[00:03:47] Trash.

[00:03:48] Danielle what was your Y2K reading of 51states?

[00:03:53] I own it.

[00:03:54] I loved it when I saw it.

[00:03:57] Same it is it was.

[00:04:00] It continues to be a comfort movie for me so 100% agree would buy it.

[00:04:07] Now where Danielle is today we might have some disagreements just just prepare yourself that

[00:04:14] this will not be a no more late fee.

[00:04:18] He's a thick of 24.

[00:04:20] I'm sorry Jackie.

[00:04:21] I'm so full.

[00:04:22] Because I love the wedding singer and Jackie prefers 51states.

[00:04:31] I don't hate this movie.

[00:04:32] I really don't like I take it for what it is.

[00:04:36] I think out of the Adam Sandler movies, it's one of the best.

[00:04:40] It's just now with my what is it?

[00:04:43] My frontal lobe being fully developed now.

[00:04:45] I got questions like what's happening?

[00:04:49] I mean, I have questions as well but I choose to ignore all of them.

[00:04:57] Much like I do for can hardly wait.

[00:05:00] Yeah.

[00:05:01] I think maybe I'm just having an awakening in life and I'm just like I don't know this

[00:05:06] is vibing with today Danielle.

[00:05:09] That's okay.

[00:05:10] We just side eye on some stuff.

[00:05:13] It's two times questions.

[00:05:15] Yeah, it is like sir where is that candy from that you're trying to give me?

[00:05:21] Why does it taste funny?

[00:05:23] Why do I feel sleepy?

[00:05:27] What's in this?

[00:05:28] I'm like where in the movie is he sending out candy?

[00:05:33] These are just hypotheticals from Danielle.

[00:05:36] Yes.

[00:05:37] Let's get into the budget.

[00:05:38] The movie had a budget of $75 million.

[00:05:41] I want to say that seems like a lot for a romcom maybe and I was thinking where did the

[00:05:48] money go?

[00:05:49] Not that I don't see it but I'm trying to figure out which buckets it went into and

[00:05:54] I was thinking probably their paychecks one and Hawaii is extremely expensive location

[00:06:02] to shoot.

[00:06:04] Yeah.

[00:06:05] I was like.

[00:06:06] I was like some CGI too.

[00:06:08] Yeah, yeah.

[00:06:09] You're right.

[00:06:10] But I mean can't complain they made it back and then some so making that bank.

[00:06:17] It worldwide it made $198.5 million and of the three movies that Adam Sandler and Drew

[00:06:23] Bayramore have made together.

[00:06:25] This is the only one that was number one at the box office and made over $100 million

[00:06:31] inspiration behind the movie was taken from Harold Remy's romantic comedy Groundhog Day.

[00:06:38] Remy's, Rammus I don't know.

[00:06:39] Remy I'm saying it wrong.

[00:06:41] Let me tell you.

[00:06:43] It's a good thing that we have certain parameters on this podcast that we are only doing 95

[00:06:49] to 2005 because the way I would have said that we had to do Groundhog Day, I love that

[00:06:56] movie so much.

[00:06:57] I don't think I've ever seen it.

[00:06:59] So let's talk about casting because I mean like this cast in my opinion is to not

[00:07:06] just everyone.

[00:07:08] Eight every scene they were in.

[00:07:12] I love the, I love the cast.

[00:07:16] I would have preferred option.

[00:07:18] I did not to be in it.

[00:07:20] I agree.

[00:07:21] But other than that and I have just come to accept the fact that he's all

[00:07:29] always going to play some sort of caricature.

[00:07:34] Okay, so I sorry, I didn't mean to cut you off.

[00:07:38] Go ahead.

[00:07:39] I just feel so passionately about how I don't.

[00:07:47] Okay so he's Filipino right?

[00:07:49] He's part, he's part Filipino and there are a lot of Filipino people, a good Filipino

[00:07:56] population in Hawaii.

[00:07:57] I don't know much about, you know, how the locals per se, I looked up some things to see

[00:08:04] how people felt.

[00:08:06] Some people didn't care, especially back then they were just because they didn't associate

[00:08:11] themselves.

[00:08:12] They did not feel like he was playing Hawaiian, like a native Hawaiian person.

[00:08:17] They did not feel that whatsoever.

[00:08:19] So they didn't really feel offended completely by it.

[00:08:24] They knew it was a caricature but then now with some hindsight, some people are like

[00:08:28] yeah, did not love that at all.

[00:08:32] Yeah, not great.

[00:08:35] I just love how Adam Sandler and his movies like do I think Adam Sandler is racist?

[00:08:44] No, but do I think he has some white man bias?

[00:08:48] A bit and there's definitely a blind spot when

[00:08:54] it's honoring other cultures in his movies.

[00:09:00] Yeah and I think he thinks he's okay or has a past because he's like look, my best one

[00:09:08] of my best friends, Rob Schneider is part Filipino and my other really good friend is black

[00:09:15] and that is I think a nuance that's missed for a lot of white people not understanding

[00:09:22] the culture within those subcultures that just because you are a black person or you

[00:09:31] are an Asian person, they are not monoliths and they might not be held in high regard

[00:09:38] in their own cultures.

[00:09:40] Like I could go on the street and ask a bunch of black people if Chris Rock represents

[00:09:44] them in any way and I promise you, they don't rock with the rock.

[00:09:51] He has shown time and time again that he gives passes to his white counterparts access

[00:10:01] to things that he really has no keys to give access to in the first place.

[00:10:06] So I just want y'all to know if you got your black friend adjacent or Asian friend adjacent

[00:10:14] does not mean that you should not look in words at your own bias and maybe potential racism.

[00:10:22] So Adam check in yo, just say it, just a little because he's got the worst black people on

[00:10:32] his team.

[00:10:33] I'm just going to say it.

[00:10:34] Terry Cruz, Terry Cruz is another one that we as a culture be side eye and about some

[00:10:40] of the things he'd be saying.

[00:10:42] So maybe you should go, you know, get somebody else.

[00:10:49] I don't think Denzel's going to do it.

[00:10:53] Find someone less problematic.

[00:10:56] Right.

[00:10:57] I just feel like out of all these movies he has all these beautiful well, I out quote

[00:11:04] beautiful because that's up to the beholder but he's got some semi attractive women as

[00:11:11] his counterparts in these movies.

[00:11:13] And I'm like, you couldn't get a black girl can't get a beautiful Asian girl.

[00:11:18] He did have some high and his later movies.

[00:11:24] So I guess.

[00:11:27] Well, so.

[00:11:31] And Danielle and I all went to the same high school.

[00:11:35] And he went to a Jackie Taito Adam Sandler's now wife was in his in his class in high school.

[00:11:45] And he said that it took him many viewings of this movie and every time he's like, that

[00:11:50] Dennis looks familiar before he connected those dots at that.

[00:11:55] Oh, that's Jackie Taito and I went high school with her.

[00:12:01] And it was kind of well known that like Adam Sandler married a girl from Coral Springs

[00:12:08] and stuff.

[00:12:09] So the math was a math and firm for a lot.

[00:12:13] Yeah.

[00:12:14] Freshest Ken.

[00:12:15] Freshest freshest.

[00:12:16] I think that's funny that she was in his grade and then we had Chris and ours.

[00:12:23] I think we've talked about Chris a few times on this podcast.

[00:12:26] We probably all hand some royalties at this point.

[00:12:31] Okay, so let's let's jump in.

[00:12:37] So the first thing we see is like an opening montage of all of these women talking about

[00:12:43] their Hawaiian vacation and how they hooked up with Henry.

[00:12:49] Oh, what his game is Jackie because let me tell you there have you seen men that

[00:12:56] come from Hawaii?

[00:12:58] Yes.

[00:13:00] Do you think my ass is going to Hawaii and I'm coming up sleep with dad before I go?

[00:13:08] Girl, ain't no way.

[00:13:11] And then he's talking about he didn't booze him up.

[00:13:14] There's just no way.

[00:13:15] I would need a reason.

[00:13:19] Like he's the kind of guy that I need some time to like fall in love with him because

[00:13:27] you know, of his personality.

[00:13:31] And I say that because I'm in Hawaii.

[00:13:33] Yeah.

[00:13:34] Aquaman is from Hawaii.

[00:13:36] Aquaman.

[00:13:37] If you have the choice between Jason and Moa and Adam Sandler, like there's, I'm running

[00:13:44] over Adam Sandler with glass heels to get to Jason Moa.

[00:13:51] You are throwing the trident at Adam Sandler on your way to Jason Moa.

[00:13:58] There ain't no way.

[00:13:59] Ain't no way.

[00:14:02] A Hawaii five is a Florida 10, okay?

[00:14:08] So there's no way I want to Brooklyn three to get my way.

[00:14:12] The math doesn't add up.

[00:14:16] Yeah.

[00:14:17] And like really you're going to hook up with like a transplant from the States?

[00:14:21] No, man.

[00:14:22] Why?

[00:14:23] Okay.

[00:14:24] Yeah.

[00:14:25] He's a vet.

[00:14:26] Fine.

[00:14:27] And he has money.

[00:14:28] Okay.

[00:14:29] But where do I see it?

[00:14:30] He does see?

[00:14:31] I don't know.

[00:14:32] That's what I'm trying to figure out.

[00:14:33] He got a busted ass boat and he lives at the aquarium.

[00:14:37] It seems like.

[00:14:38] And his style is wet.

[00:14:40] Even for Hawaii standards, that's very laid back.

[00:14:44] I...

[00:14:46] When he was wearing the t-shirts he was, I'm like, did he just show up on set?

[00:14:53] Are those his regular clothes?

[00:14:55] And then they're like, he's like okay, no, no, I don't need wardrobe.

[00:14:59] Because the budget definitely did not go to wardrobe.

[00:15:03] It did not.

[00:15:05] I mean Drew Bearmore's wearing that pink shirt every goddamn day.

[00:15:08] And we know why because it's like she doesn't remember.

[00:15:12] But the dad keeps on rewashing those shirts and I'm like, isn't this going to shrink at

[00:15:18] some point?

[00:15:19] Or like fade or get really thin.

[00:15:22] Yeah.

[00:15:23] Yeah.

[00:15:24] Although once they start telling her every day that she has a traumatic brain injury,

[00:15:32] she does start wearing other outfits.

[00:15:34] Which it took me a long time to realize that she starts doing that, but I thought that

[00:15:40] was a nice touch that she could like move on from the pink shirt.

[00:15:45] I feel like I would have picked out a new outfit every day because it's rare that I ever

[00:15:53] go to bed thinking this is what I'm going to wear.

[00:15:56] So if I can't find my pink shirt, that's fine.

[00:15:59] I got it.

[00:16:00] Yeah, I got a whole closet full of clothes.

[00:16:03] Yeah, I would hide it for real.

[00:16:06] Second is dancer.

[00:16:08] Cycle it out.

[00:16:09] Lay.

[00:16:10] Okay.

[00:16:11] Monday's we wear this shirt.

[00:16:14] Tuesday's we wear this shirt.

[00:16:15] At least give her a week's worth of wardrobe.

[00:16:19] She was ahead of her time.

[00:16:21] She was.

[00:16:22] Wednesday's we wear pink.

[00:16:24] That's true.

[00:16:25] That's what she Lucy was ready to be a mean girl.

[00:16:29] Sorry.

[00:16:30] So yes, then we see Henry breaking up with his latest conquest.

[00:16:40] He's pretending to be like a CIA agent hops on some random dudes wave runner ends like I'll

[00:16:48] pay you 20 bucks just keep driving in the guys like bet.

[00:16:51] $20.

[00:16:53] $20.

[00:16:54] I would have he would have scared me and I would have pushed him off like there's no way

[00:17:00] to flip the wave runner in the end because I'm like, what the hell?

[00:17:06] Well you're doing a lot to try to get away from this pretty hot girl like yeah and she's

[00:17:13] getting on an airplane right.

[00:17:15] You could have just ghosted her by not calling her back but doing the most.

[00:17:20] Oh,

[00:17:21] I tell you a story about my cruise real quick because it has to do with the ocean.

[00:17:26] Okay.

[00:17:27] So we went to MSC's private island and in the middle is like this lagoon area and they had

[00:17:36] like floaty docs out in the middle of it.

[00:17:39] And so me and a couple of my co workers were like, we're going to swim out to the floaty

[00:17:44] docs.

[00:17:45] So we get out there and then we're doing like flippy is off the docs and having a great

[00:17:48] time.

[00:17:49] And then we're swimming back in and the two of them are a little ahead of me.

[00:17:54] And I'm getting close to shore.

[00:17:56] And then my other co workers husband who like jokes around a lot, he's like, hey Jackie

[00:18:02] there's a shark headed for you.

[00:18:05] And I was like, I kind of looked at him and he's like no, I'm really serious.

[00:18:09] It's headed for you.

[00:18:10] It's a nurse shark.

[00:18:11] It's okay.

[00:18:12] But I wanted to let you know.

[00:18:15] And so now my brain is spinning because I thought this lagoon had nets and like nothing

[00:18:21] was getting in here.

[00:18:23] And I've swam with nurse sharks before but I was mentally prepared to swim with nurse

[00:18:28] sharks.

[00:18:29] I don't even know what I'm all I hear is my girls in the water with sharks.

[00:18:36] What does this mean?

[00:18:37] You talk about a baby shark like they sing that song about.

[00:18:40] That's amazing.

[00:18:41] Yeah.

[00:18:42] That's amazing.

[00:18:44] So I finally see it.

[00:18:47] It is at least six feet long.

[00:18:49] Why?

[00:18:50] Yeah, it is like the size of my coworker bride.

[00:18:53] I was like about that wide and about that tall.

[00:18:56] That's how big it was.

[00:18:58] And my brain was just like okay, alligators use zigzag.

[00:19:03] Like I could not for life of me remember what you do in case you're attacked by a shark.

[00:19:09] And part of the problem was I couldn't see it.

[00:19:14] Like if I had seen it to know where his head was, I'd have more of a defensive plan and

[00:19:21] then my coworker's husband's like, oh okay, like turned away from you.

[00:19:25] It's swimming away now.

[00:19:26] And that's when I saw it.

[00:19:28] And I was just like what the fuck man?

[00:19:31] Where was Ken?

[00:19:32] He was sleeping in the cabana.

[00:19:36] Ken.

[00:19:37] You have one job.

[00:19:41] But then I like voice memo my family and I tell them the saga.

[00:19:46] And my sister immediately starts texting back.

[00:19:48] Oh, sharks are the puppies of the sea.

[00:19:51] And nurse sharks are called that because they eat via suction.

[00:19:55] And so unless you stuck your hand in its mouth, like there was no way it could bite you.

[00:20:01] And just reassuring me.

[00:20:04] And I was like, okay.

[00:20:09] So that was my experience on the cruise is I unknowingly went swimming with a shark.

[00:20:21] It's going to be me, Lord.

[00:20:24] Which is why I prefer a swimming pool.

[00:20:32] Now back to the movie.

[00:20:33] We then meet Ula were at Henry's job, the aquarium.

[00:20:39] And like I said, it seems like he sleeps in the back of the dolphin exhibit.

[00:20:45] I don't know his office essentially but there's a couch and it's a mess.

[00:20:52] And then Ula is getting stitched up because he was in fact attacked by a shark.

[00:20:59] Which is which in Hawaii, they don't play around about sharks.

[00:21:08] And so if any is any are spotted even close, they have so many different alerts.

[00:21:14] They will clear the beach if they even spot anyone anything coming close.

[00:21:18] So that was like one of the I have a whole section of debunks from this movie.

[00:21:24] That isn't a bunk that it's very unlikely that that would have happened to, especially

[00:21:30] a local because they're so aware of like the shark situation.

[00:21:36] So but we also know he's an idiot.

[00:21:41] And then Danielle, how did you feel about Ula's feet on Henry's pillow?

[00:21:49] I was disgusted.

[00:21:52] And not only disgusted because he put his foot on there, he sat on it as well.

[00:22:00] And when he put his foot on there, there was like a dirty footprint.

[00:22:06] And I think the thing that makes me disgusted the most is that I know that Adam's character

[00:22:13] was not going to change the pillowcase.

[00:22:16] He go lay on it.

[00:22:17] He go turn it over and just lay on it.

[00:22:19] I know it.

[00:22:21] Henry is going to lay on it.

[00:22:23] Gross.

[00:22:25] I would have knocked him out for real.

[00:22:27] I'm not joking.

[00:22:29] I might have not been like before I could even think about it.

[00:22:32] My arm would have been all the way back, cocked back here.

[00:22:37] As soon as I saw it, I was like, oh, Danielle's going to have something to say about the pillowcase.

[00:22:42] It was not happy.

[00:22:43] It was like gross.

[00:22:45] We also meet Ula's plethora of children who are always recording him for some reason.

[00:22:52] They always have a camcorder.

[00:22:53] Why does Rob Schneider always have a bunch of kids in these movies?

[00:22:57] Because in grownups, he has all these daughters.

[00:23:02] That's like the running joke that he has a bunch of beautiful daughters and then maybe

[00:23:06] one that's not so cute.

[00:23:09] So I'm like, why he has so many kids?

[00:23:11] Does he have a lot of kids in real life?

[00:23:14] You think he has elk King?

[00:23:16] That's the one I know of.

[00:23:18] So he's got a bunch of little kids making fun of him with lame jokes and whatnot.

[00:23:25] And he's very in love with Henry's lifestyle that Henry gets...

[00:23:28] He's living by carousel through Henry because he's tied down with his wife and his many

[00:23:32] children.

[00:23:33] And Henry gets to sleep with the new chick of the week.

[00:23:37] And yeah, loves it.

[00:23:40] He only has one.

[00:23:41] Al King is the only child.

[00:23:43] Okay, so we're just living out other dreams.

[00:23:46] I don't know.

[00:23:48] Yep.

[00:23:49] So then next we meet Alexa who is...

[00:23:59] She's European.

[00:24:04] I don't know what country...

[00:24:06] I guess gender ambiguous?

[00:24:09] I thought she was a woman and that he was just making mean jokes about her not being

[00:24:18] a woman.

[00:24:20] But then I was like, okay, maybe she's just...

[00:24:26] I don't know.

[00:24:28] It's one of those things where they don't out...

[00:24:31] They don't really make like trans jokes but it's like implied.

[00:24:40] Yeah.

[00:24:41] Good times.

[00:24:42] I didn't know what they were trying to do.

[00:24:44] I didn't know where they were trying to go.

[00:24:45] I just know it made me kind of cringe.

[00:24:47] Yes.

[00:24:48] Either way.

[00:24:49] Oh, and either way.

[00:24:50] Because now like back then, I don't even think I really thought about her character at

[00:24:54] all.

[00:24:55] You know, oh man, I think it's funny to take an unconventional woman and make fun of her.

[00:25:04] Either she's tall and skinny but she again is not like the beauty standard or they take

[00:25:10] like a fat woman or something.

[00:25:12] It's always something outside of the norm, I guess you could say.

[00:25:17] And you're kind of like, yeah, not really amused by any of this.

[00:25:22] But okay.

[00:25:24] Yes.

[00:25:25] I agree.

[00:25:27] So...

[00:25:30] So they like, you know, they're working together and she does hit on him essentially.

[00:25:36] Like she tries to throw herself at him and that's where some of the weird jokes come from.

[00:25:40] But he dismisses her.

[00:25:43] And I believe this is then we see...

[00:25:45] Don't we see him at the...

[00:25:47] He goes to the cafe.

[00:25:48] No, he's driving...

[00:25:49] No.

[00:25:50] He's on his boat.

[00:25:51] There you go.

[00:25:53] He's on his boat and which looks like one of those...

[00:25:58] You have ever been to Orlando and you go to one of those resorts and they have like a fake

[00:26:03] boat at the pool.

[00:26:05] Yes.

[00:26:06] That's...

[00:26:07] Five.

[00:26:08] It's like it's not supposed to be really hit in the sea.

[00:26:12] He's on his boat and his boat is falling apart so he kind of gets stuck.

[00:26:15] Someone comes to get him, drops him off to the mainland and he...

[00:26:21] He ends up going to this local cafe so that he can wait for the coast card to get his

[00:26:28] really bad Jack Sparrow boat.

[00:26:31] So, a spooky loud cafe?

[00:26:33] Yes.

[00:26:34] Yeah.

[00:26:35] So this diner where we see...

[00:26:38] Where it has breakfast every morning where Henry is at.

[00:26:42] It was originally a house that was remodeled for the movie.

[00:26:45] Henry is located on the McAdamion Net Farm on the eastern side of Oahu.

[00:26:51] The same house was also used in the 2003 movie Tears of the Sun and scenes from the Jurassic

[00:26:58] Park movie in 93 were also filmed in open fields nearby.

[00:27:03] So, that's pretty cool.

[00:27:06] Yeah.

[00:27:07] And we meet...

[00:27:09] Not only do we meet Lucy for the first time, we meet Sue who we find out is...

[00:27:14] I can't tell if it's her restaurant or she's just working there all the time.

[00:27:18] I think it's her restaurant and I know when I was looking at how authentic the film was,

[00:27:25] the diner itself was very authentic and then the whole...

[00:27:30] Her part and then her son's part is very...

[00:27:35] Like what it's like.

[00:27:37] Is that a croissant?

[00:27:38] Or a nephew or something like that?

[00:27:41] I don't know if he's her real nephew or real son, but like that relationship is normal

[00:27:46] like to see that kind of big ring.

[00:27:49] Like that.

[00:27:50] And she's Lucy's mom's best friend.

[00:27:52] So that's why she watches out for her.

[00:27:55] Yeah.

[00:27:56] So Lucy goes to the cafe for waffles every Sunday and because since her brain injury,

[00:28:02] she goes there every day now.

[00:28:04] Henry walks in.

[00:28:05] They kind of give him a hard time because he's a non-native and kind of goofy looking.

[00:28:11] And he's been walking into this cafe.

[00:28:13] Well, I don't...

[00:28:14] Who...

[00:28:15] I mean the guy who's sitting at the bar gizmo a hard time but I think he just gizmo.

[00:28:20] Except because he's the natural.

[00:28:22] Oh yeah, that's true.

[00:28:24] I don't think the rest of them give him a hard time until he starts engaging with Lucy.

[00:28:28] Yeah.

[00:28:29] And Sue does a...

[00:28:31] They ask him if he wants a menu or what he wants to see and he says he ate breakfast,

[00:28:36] but it consisted of peanut butter cups and coffee or something.

[00:28:40] And she's like, that's not a breakfast I'm going to bring you spam and eggs.

[00:28:45] And so from then on the cook always refers to Henry's peanut butter cups.

[00:28:53] So Henry sees Lucy at the table.

[00:28:55] She's reading...

[00:28:56] She's building a little waffle teepee.

[00:29:01] And I don't think he...

[00:29:06] Does he approach her on the first day?

[00:29:09] He does.

[00:29:10] He sees...

[00:29:11] No, well she actually...

[00:29:13] I think says something to...

[00:29:15] Well yes, he does approach her because she is spinning her knife and it hits the reflection

[00:29:21] and starts to sublime him so he notices her.

[00:29:23] And I think he moves over to sit near her

[00:29:30] and she sees that he's eating alone and she invites him to sit with her.

[00:29:35] It's because he gives her the toothpick to make her little door.

[00:29:39] That's the next day.

[00:29:40] That's the next day?

[00:29:41] Yeah.

[00:29:42] I think she asked him...

[00:29:43] I don't know.

[00:29:45] I feel like they talked the first day, but I thought it was because of the...

[00:29:50] I think she invites him over to sit with him.

[00:29:55] I think he just like complements her waffle teepee.

[00:29:58] Like I think it's a very short interaction with them the first day.

[00:30:01] I think...

[00:30:02] I think she made the toothpick because the other days that he thinks that he could try it,

[00:30:09] she's like...

[00:30:10] The toothpick is definitely in the next day because it's when she's building a house.

[00:30:15] Oh yeah, she just has a teepee.

[00:30:17] She just hasn't you right?

[00:30:18] She just has a teepee.

[00:30:19] I think she invites him to sit with her.

[00:30:22] Yeah.

[00:30:23] And then they talk and then they say to meet the next day or whatever.

[00:30:27] Yeah.

[00:30:28] And then he comes back to the restaurant the next day.

[00:30:31] This is when she's trying to figure out how to do a door for her little waffle house

[00:30:36] and he comes over with a toothpick and helps her make a hinge.

[00:30:40] And she invites him to sit down and she comments on his fishy smell

[00:30:48] and they get in a conversation about how his dad and brother or fisherman

[00:30:53] are out for long periods of time.

[00:30:55] And so she always like...

[00:30:57] She's very fond of that smell because when they come home, they smell like fish.

[00:31:02] And then he offers for her to sniff his fingers.

[00:31:05] Gross.

[00:31:06] That is another debunked.

[00:31:08] So Lucy...

[00:31:13] Despite...

[00:31:15] Let's see where is it.

[00:31:19] Oh, so yeah.

[00:31:21] The very first time they meet Lucy mentions that her father and brother often leave home

[00:31:25] on the fishing boat for months at a time in reality coming across fishermen

[00:31:29] who are out to see for a long time is not likely.

[00:31:32] And that is because in Hawaii they have very strict rules about fishing,

[00:31:36] what you can fish and...

[00:31:38] And so it just makes no sense that you're going out for that alone.

[00:31:42] And I have the same thought even when watching it like way back when I'm like,

[00:31:47] this is not World's Deathly's Catch.

[00:31:50] Right.

[00:31:54] So...

[00:31:56] Oh, and then we...

[00:31:58] They walk out to their cars and they're still kind of talking and stuff

[00:32:02] and Lucy explains it's her dad's birthday and they're going to pick a pineapple

[00:32:06] so she can make him a pineapple upside down cake and it's a tradition that they have.

[00:32:10] Let's meet tomorrow for lunch.

[00:32:13] There is a car parked in between them and so they're each on the opposite side of this van

[00:32:19] doing a little happy dance but the van pulls out and they see each other doing their little happy dances.

[00:32:25] So I want to take a moment to declare my love for Lucy's vehicle.

[00:32:31] It's behind me. Here it is.

[00:32:33] It is a Kubavagan or a type 151 or a thing.

[00:32:39] It's all synonymous with this military vehicle that I love and desperately want.

[00:32:44] So Ken claims that is part of the reason why I love this movie so much because the Kubavagan gets a lot of air time.

[00:32:54] Okay, moving on.

[00:32:56] We then get a scene where Henry is playing golf with Ula and the kids.

[00:33:03] And Ula goes to swing and does the happy Gilmore approach to golfing and Henry makes a comment that's the stupidest fucking swing I've ever seen.

[00:33:16] So poking a little fun at his previous movie.

[00:33:20] And then it is Henry's turn to golf.

[00:33:26] I'm trying real hard with these golfing terms.

[00:33:29] I don't hit the ball.

[00:33:31] I don't know, but sweating because he had a hit at heart.

[00:33:34] It's not on the green yet. Sorry Nick.

[00:33:37] And then his ball goes off a cliff and he gets down there and then Lucy's down there and she's like hitting on him and she's just saying like.

[00:33:48] I want to issue the next day and the next day and the next day, which is kind of foreshadowing her injury.

[00:33:57] And then Henry wakes up and it turns out that was all in his head and he his ball had hit the golf part and ricochet and knocked him out.

[00:34:11] So now, but Henry is like really faced by this because he's like I've never like had a second thought about any girl that I've met.

[00:34:22] Right.

[00:34:23] He's a hit it and quit it and now he's like hallucinating this girl he just met.

[00:34:29] I don't know Jackie are you sure was the second day?

[00:34:32] I feel like all this magic cap in that first day that they met.

[00:34:36] And then he's the second day.

[00:34:37] I took the one to stand. Yeah, but what did he do the first day? He just looked at her.

[00:34:42] I don't know you want me to pull off the movie and watch the scene?

[00:34:45] I don't know why I just am used because it was the waffle teepee the first day and then he comes back the second day and does the hinge and does the hinge.

[00:34:55] I just I just remember what they waffle buildings.

[00:34:59] I was just trying to see like what they did that first day.

[00:35:04] But you know what?

[00:35:06] That's all I want.

[00:35:07] I just want to know what happened the first time and I know we're supposed to provide that but we already know my brain is like a goldfish.

[00:35:13] So I've already forgotten I watched this like a week or two ago.

[00:35:19] I watched it two nights ago, but I'm like I've seen this movie a lot.

[00:35:22] I don't have to take super detailed notes.

[00:35:25] So it was really I took notes of what she was building on what day.

[00:35:29] Gotcha.

[00:35:30] So when he goes back then does he run into her a second time that day?

[00:35:37] No.

[00:35:38] Okay, but he goes back the next day because there's was a date while they're golfing.

[00:35:45] It was like I found a tourist for you.

[00:35:50] And so then we get the scene with Missy pile.

[00:35:54] Who is lovely and I love her and everything she does.

[00:35:57] And this is when we find out that Henry's M O is to provide them these fish bowls of drinks, but they're actually non alcoholic.

[00:36:06] That way he doesn't feel guilty about like taking advantage of a drunk woman woman.

[00:36:13] Yeah, I love her and bringing down the house the most that fight seemed with her and Queen of T always cracks me up.

[00:36:21] I think of her in the episode of Friends where Ross bleaches his teeth.

[00:36:27] And she has a house full of UV lights and like black light posters.

[00:36:36] She's like, why are your teeth so insanely white?

[00:36:44] Missy pile means to me, I guess.

[00:36:48] And this is another realization for Henry that he really does like Lucy because he's like, you know what?

[00:36:55] This doesn't feel right. He tells it like there's no alcohol on it.

[00:36:58] She's like, you know, I'm still down, down for it.

[00:37:02] He sends her in the direction of what's the lady's name Alexa Alexa who also seems to be down to play as well.

[00:37:11] So, I guess the next day comes back and says, I guess I prefer sausage more than tacos.

[00:37:18] Do you hear my Alexa talking because she.

[00:37:23] Years talking to you.

[00:37:26] We're going to have to call her a because I'm not trying to hear that.

[00:37:30] You said such a laughing movie last night.

[00:37:34] It kept going off too.

[00:37:38] So Henry shows up at the after this realization, Henry shows up at the restaurant the next day.

[00:37:45] And he's like super confident because we've already made this plan to me walks right up and he's like my fingers are extra fishy for you today.

[00:37:55] And she's like what in the actual fuck is this?

[00:38:01] She plays into the left real quick.

[00:38:05] And she's like, I've never met you. I don't know why you're approaching me like she's very.

[00:38:11] Skived out and so Sue comes and like pulls Henry outside and explains to him that she had a traumatic brain injury due to.

[00:38:21] Car accident a year ago in her short term memory resets every day once she's sleeping.

[00:38:29] She all she still retains her long term memory, but right her short term.

[00:38:36] Clean slate every day.

[00:38:38] Right because they're in two different parts of your brain, although we do have to say that this disease or.

[00:38:45] Signorological condition.

[00:38:48] It is called gold field syndrome and is entirely fictional true and to re.

[00:38:57] Enter grade amnesia effects either short term memory, which can last minutes or seconds or immediate term memory, which can last days or weeks falling asleep has nothing to do with the condition and sleep actually intensifies many chemical effects, which helps memory.

[00:39:14] So just know if you meet a guy or girl and they try to pull Lucy on you, they lie.

[00:39:22] Yeah.

[00:39:25] Um.

[00:39:28] Sue also explains in detail Lucy's accident it was a cow stepped into the road while they were driving to get the pineapple for dad's pineapple upside down cake for his birthday.

[00:39:39] He swerved.

[00:39:41] I'm assuming no one was wearing seat belts because he broke a bunch of ribs and she had a severe head injury.

[00:39:49] And I have another debunked for that.

[00:39:52] Okay, go ahead.

[00:39:53] One because most of the island is either like they don't okay.

[00:40:01] They are not doing a lot of producing of goods.

[00:40:05] So Lucina father drove up the North Shore to pick up pineapple for his birthday, as you said, but since a wise illegal annexation, which we should note it's an illegal annexation annexation by the US in 1898.

[00:40:19] The islands have been increasingly dependent on imported goods, producing just 10% of their own food.

[00:40:26] So this work is left to the local farmers and farms are not generally open to families looking to pick their own produce.

[00:40:35] And also same when it comes to like when we look at Lucy's house, when we see that later how it's like on the beach, that is very rare as well to have that much property, that much space.

[00:40:46] And so the local's even the ones that you know came from the States to have that kind of real estate because so much of the land is owned by these huge billionaires that own much of that prime real estate.

[00:41:03] So I thought that was interesting.

[00:41:05] Yeah.

[00:41:07] The car, the cow was unindered.

[00:41:10] We find out later on and the car dad was driving was a Toyota land cruiser.

[00:41:16] And so then we see insight into Lucy's home life.

[00:41:19] She lives with her dad Marlon and her brother Doug.

[00:41:23] Doug is a fitness enthusiast but also like juices and is really stupid.

[00:41:31] Well, shout out to Blake Clark who plays Marlon.

[00:41:34] Well the shout out is actually to our friends, Bro Meets World because he plays Sean's dead on Boy Meets World if you don't know.

[00:41:40] And we actually did the episode on Bro Meets World where his case the bucket dies.

[00:41:48] And so you should head over to Bro Meets World and check out that episode that we guessed, cast it on and give them some love.

[00:41:56] His career is way beyond that.

[00:41:58] He's a huge voice actor for Disney and Pixar.

[00:42:02] And he played the dog yet.

[00:42:05] So I know what it was.

[00:42:06] I have a fun fact about this.

[00:42:09] So Jim Varnie voiced slinky dog.

[00:42:14] Right.

[00:42:15] And Jim Varnie, unfortunately passed away after the first or second movie.

[00:42:21] And so Jim and Blake Clark are very, were very, very good friends and sounded similar.

[00:42:28] So he took over the voice of slinky dog for his friend after he passed away.

[00:42:33] That's what it was.

[00:42:34] You're right.

[00:42:35] So many fun facts.

[00:42:37] Dive him back into 50 first.

[00:42:40] So we see dad and Doug kind of go through this routine every evening.

[00:42:47] And he's painted his shop white and she can go and paint anything she wants because she's an artist that teaches at the local school.

[00:42:56] It's dad's birthday.

[00:42:57] So obviously they have pineapple upside down cake for his birthday treat.

[00:43:02] She gives him the six cents.

[00:43:04] She suggests that they watch the Vikings game while she's painting.

[00:43:07] And so it's all these little things that they have to do every day.

[00:43:11] There's another foot incident.

[00:43:14] Which is Sean Eston's character.

[00:43:17] Oh, what does the name Doug?

[00:43:19] Doug is like he's like picking his feet or doing something real nasty.

[00:43:24] Yes.

[00:43:25] And then the dad like throws his shoe at them.

[00:43:29] And this was another debunked too because they were saying because Asian culture is so infused in Hawaiian culture as well that usually people don't wear their shoes in the house.

[00:43:41] But I don't know if it would.

[00:43:43] If the like white people would adhere to that as well.

[00:43:49] I will and do Doug is just dumb and uncouth in general.

[00:43:53] Well, it's the dad who's wearing shoes because he takes the shoe to throw it off on him.

[00:43:57] So either way this made me cringe.

[00:44:00] Look, I'm like, I hate beat.

[00:44:03] I see you want to know something about me.

[00:44:07] I don't want to see it.

[00:44:08] I don't want to see it.

[00:44:10] I don't want to see it.

[00:44:12] Yeah, that's not my thing.

[00:44:14] Continue.

[00:44:15] So and even on this day like.

[00:44:18] Lucy comes in and she's like, oh, how's the game going in Doug's like, I think Cole pepper is going to do a blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.

[00:44:27] And loser does dishes so she takes the bat.

[00:44:29] And of course he loses.

[00:44:30] Ken got very excited at the mention of Dante Cole pepper.

[00:44:34] And went to school while Ken was at UCF.

[00:44:36] So he watched Dante's.

[00:44:38] College career.

[00:44:40] So he yells Cole pepper many times during that scene.

[00:44:44] Okay.

[00:44:46] Sounds familiar.

[00:44:48] He played with that ball.

[00:44:52] Hello kids of the 80s 90s and beyond radical Ryan Hunter here from the radical retro rewind podcast.

[00:45:01] Join me along with everyone's favorite brother David and the movie geek Rob every Friday as we discuss everything from movies TV video games music action figures and more every week's another adventure.

[00:45:15] We're available on Apple Podcasts Spotify and most podcasting platforms hope to see you there radical ones.

[00:45:23] So then Lucy goes to bed and then we see Doug and Marlon resetting everything for the next day they wash her shirt they paint over Marlon takes pictures every day it seems of her artwork and then paints over it.

[00:45:45] They rerap the six cents they hide the Vikings tape they have a freezer full of pineapples because it's I'm assuming the offseason from pineapples right they have a stack of newspapers so it's always reflecting October 13th of last year.

[00:46:03] So they have this whole routine that they do while Lucy sleeping to kind of reset for the next day.

[00:46:10] And when we get to I know we're going to get to it so eventually they do start telling her instead of playing this charade.

[00:46:19] I just feel like that would be so traumatizing.

[00:46:23] Like to wake up every morning and like the way that she handles it it's like okay and then she just goes about her day it seems like I would have liked them to show days where she's like not talking to anybody.

[00:46:36] I mean she does cry obviously but like I would be full underpressed yes but end pointed out at the end.

[00:46:47] Because you know like she says the thing about like am I just going to wake up pregnant and not know how I got here blah blah blah but then at the end spoilers if you have not seen this movie.

[00:46:58] 20 years later that Lucy says I dream about you almost every night so he's that he points out by the end she's probably she knows about him because she dreams about him every night and then she wakes up to the stage so it's not a complete shock by the end because she is storing some sort of memory of Henry.

[00:47:26] Yeah probably then her daughter when she has her daughter and stuff yeah I think so but I just feel like at the beginning it's probably incredibly traumatizing but also she journals.

[00:47:37] So I think like she probably wakes up and it's she's probably in the habit of like journaling every morning or reading her journal every morning yeah so she starts making notes to herself to you to kind of less than the blow that's interesting because she said she didn't start journaling until she met Henry.

[00:47:55] So it's not like a habit that she had prior so I'm wondering how is she even remembering to do it unless you put the sticky note on it to open read or something you know what I mean so that I thought was interesting.

[00:48:08] Yeah so yeah they're doing their routine she ruins the six cents.

[00:48:13] Yeah for people watching the movie not for her family so if you haven't seen the six cents do not watch this movie because again another 20 or a half hours and then she goes to bed before everybody and then the her family her family starts to do their routine they wash her clothes they re they wrap the tape that she gives us.

[00:48:34] She gives us six cents.

[00:48:36] Oh you did say where are we now the next day so the next day she shows up at the restaurant Henry shows shows up at the restaurant and she's building again a waffle house not a waffle house but a.

[00:48:50] She's made a lot of waffles and he very like.

[00:48:54] Hockey walks over with the toothpick does the hinge thing and her reaction is different today she she full of what Daniel would have been full of at the beginning get your mind about the food so then we get a montage of.

[00:49:14] Henry trying to get Lucy to notice him every day.

[00:49:18] He tries all the tricks what gets her attention is him pretending he can't read so she offers to read the menu to him and teach him a little bit about how to read.

[00:49:32] And then he's very proud of himself they walk outside to their cars and he just walks to get into his car because he knows it's like the same routine every day.

[00:49:42] And she's like what the fuck man like that was the goofiest thing i've ever seen but if you wanted to like talk to me that bad I figured it was going to go somewhere and then he's trying to backtrack and then she's just like ma hollow for the ego boost and like just drives off he then shows up at her house.

[00:50:04] And Marlon's kind of like stay away from my daughter.

[00:50:08] And Henry's like like i'm not going to give up type thing and I think so I thought he got to the house because they caught him like going after her or something or it was that bad day she got a parking ticket.

[00:50:26] Was that not yeah he just goes to their house on his own yeah I think he shows up to apologize to Lucy for not.

[00:50:36] And Marlon's like stay away from her like we have enough going on we don't need you in the mix type thing yeah and then so then he starts to do things outside of the restaurant like he has he pretends to have car trouble and needs his car jumped.

[00:50:51] That's one the dad that I think that's when one of the times a dad finally finds him out there playing games yeah has Lucy almost runs over the poor penguin that he put over she doesn't run over it yes but.

[00:51:04] He doesn't get hurt luckily because I guess the car is high enough yeah very dangerous game playing with the birds and then my favorite scene is when.

[00:51:15] Ula is pretending to beat up Henry and she pulls out a bat and just like fucking goes to town.

[00:51:23] And she's just screaming at him but then like Henry starts talking to her and she's like all sweet and stuff after she's just beat the shit out of this man on the side of the road I loved every minute of rush night again hit with that bet you just say there was a personal highlight.

[00:51:40] The day that dad and Doug see Henry he has tied himself up like he's going to be.

[00:51:50] And that's when Marlon's finally like okay come to the house because she's in the shop painting and she's singing.

[00:52:03] Beach boys and it be nice we were all dirt that song yeah and Marlon says she only sings on the days that she meets you so Marlon is starting to recognize like right or something to this relationship.

[00:52:19] And because the beach boys is what.

[00:52:22] The mom that's there like their song their thing and so Lucy would pack it when they would go to see apple quotations there to encourage him to come back soon as soon as possible so that they he wouldn't miss them or whatever so that's the importance for the song for Lucy.

[00:52:41] And next day at the restaurant.

[00:52:44] A cop is writing her a ticket for expired tags she's arguing with him and then goes and looks at a newspaper and realizes like.

[00:52:54] Shits fucked if they're so on top this is the part that I was like if they're still on top of everything how would you not make sure that her tags were in like I think that's right because she can see the tags.

[00:53:10] Like as she's getting into the car I would be worried that she saw that the tags are.

[00:53:16] I feel like he should have gone down to a police office and say there can't be them many cops right just inform everyone hey the registrations up to date like we're just trying to not make waves for mentally ill.

[00:53:32] Right yeah.

[00:53:34] Oh boy so yeah she has a really bad day but they're also prepared for when they have a bad day like they have.

[00:53:40] She will immediately calls Marlin and tells him she's having a bad day there's a photo album with all the clippings from the accident then there's the stuff from alright there was stuff from the doctor she wants to also talk to the doctor so like they have steps in place.

[00:54:02] Yep everything and Henry's kind of just there as support emotional support like he doesn't say much she does ask who he is and he's like i'm not really sure what to say here the dad's like honey it's kind of your boyfriend.

[00:54:16] And I think my favorite line is she was like do we sleep together like.

[00:54:22] And he was like I would like that.

[00:54:27] And then we meet Dr. Keats played by Dan Acroid at the Callahan Institute that is funded out of Sandesky Ohio by TB Callahan the automotive components Tycoon which.

[00:54:43] If anyone knows Tommy boy that's who.

[00:54:48] TB is.

[00:54:51] Dan Acroid was also in Tommy boy and then of course Adam Sandler and.

[00:54:56] Why can't I think of this far Lee Chris Farley were really good friends and so the doctor explains her condition to her he says that it's stable but most likely permanent.

[00:55:09] And then we see me a secondary character 10 second Tom whose memory only lost 10 seconds instead of a day.

[00:55:18] And then as Lucy saying goodbye to Henry for the evening she says I don't want you to strike out tomorrow i'm a sucker for Stargazer lilies and so he shows up with lilies which is this scene behind me.

[00:55:33] And a VHS tape that he has made because he sneaks and gets all of the documentation that I was like he's got some video skills.

[00:55:43] Because how quickly did he pull all this stuff and that was all fucking analog man yeah there was no YouTube to pull clips from yeah.

[00:55:52] So he gives her a video that explains a current events and what happened to her shows the article.

[00:56:01] Marlon's not cool with it at first but Henry's like if it doesn't work it's only one day like let's see what happens and she is upset for about an hour and then she asked how the cow is.

[00:56:14] And then she can move on with the rest of her day and so.

[00:56:18] Marlon realizes like this is progress this isn't having to do the same exact thing every day and sure some days are going to be better than others but.

[00:56:29] We need to start telling her because Henry does point out like one day she's going to look in the mirror and she's going to be old right and like you can't keep the charade up forever right that.

[00:56:42] Literally the.

[00:56:47] Like the cramp keeper.

[00:56:52] And so then we see her and Henry start to really have a relationship she starts journaling and documenting her days so that she she can refresh her memory every morning they go to a luau on the beach and meet all of her friends.

[00:57:08] She admits that he loves her and then we see this montage of her saying nothing beats a first kiss as they progress in her dating but she doesn't remember it's not.

[00:57:21] I have another debunked that happens in the scene so it says contrary contrary to what mainstream cinema and their abundance of getting laid jokes may suggest the practice of laygiving has a rich history in traditional white.

[00:57:37] Culture it has often meant to signify on or and love among the Hawaiian monarchy has since evolved to be used for celebratory purposes for example a lay may be given to a high school or college graduate.

[00:57:55] And then we see the white and groom on their wedding day or anniversary a dance dancer or singer after performance or special guests at an event in the film the characters where lay where lays at a gathering between friends for no apparent reason.

[00:58:11] Other than why yeah we have definitely appropriated the lays for all sorts of very horrible like when I even think about it like.

[00:58:24] Parties and all that like Hawaiian blue out parties and stuff like that I never even thought about it until I got older and so very interesting.

[00:58:35] Yep.

[00:58:37] So eventually Henry takes Lucy to meet Jaco and she's asking Jaco questions and Henry standing behind him like getting him to not and stuff with Jaco the wallers right yes.

[00:58:51] For those who don't know Jaco I mentioned him in the beginning.

[00:58:59] And then she's like should we take this relationship to the next level and then she kind of has a cute little turn around she's like I saw what you did with your hand and i'm so glad you did like pounces on him.

[00:59:14] So as they're falling asleep Henry asks Lucy to marry him and she said she's like absolutely but then she wakes up the next morning obviously her memory has been reset and she's freak the fuck out because she's in bed with a stranger.

[00:59:29] And so her dad and dog have to come in and kind of be like no like you're dating this guy memory loss watch the video right.

[00:59:38] I kind of feel like why did he fall asleep in there like he should have come up you know but maybe he they just you know what it's like you're kicking around and then boom you go to sleep do you go to sleep.

[00:59:55] And the next thing you know fucking fall asleep.

[00:59:59] And we can up and she doesn't remember who the fuck you are so as she's like watching the video processing and when she comes downstairs she kind of overhears a conversation that Henry is having with her family because Henry his whole plan was to go to Alaska to watch the whales or learn about the waves are something.

[01:00:16] Study walruses Daniel whatever walrus whales because you know what they do about beneath the ice I love whales.

[01:00:26] What is it.

[01:00:29] What was it all right yes the walrus that he wants to watch the wall or says okay but he is what he's like I'm not doing that no more like I Lucy like can't do that but this is my life now.

[01:00:43] So Lucy hearing that she's very upset and you know doesn't want him to give up his life for her she thinks that she's holding back from his career and just being able to have like a normal life she she feels really bad.

[01:00:58] And so they go on a date and she essentially is they're trying to have a good time but then she she's doing this because she's like this is our last Torah she wants to break up she wants him to help her with her rewrite her journal because she wants to take all of him out of it.

[01:01:17] This is when she tells him that she's been journaling this whole time can you hear that.

[01:01:22] No okay motorcycles laugh and so he doesn't want to but he agrees because that's what she wants and so they break up and she's still journaling she's still following the same thing but like Henry doesn't exist so we think.

[01:01:42] So I think it's a good montage of them like doing their separate activities he's working on his boat she's teaching art class at the Institute and then we see Henry saying goodbye to everyone at the aquarium because he's ready to go on his voyage to Alaska to steady not whales.

[01:02:03] And we find out from Marlin that Lucy has moved out of the house she has moved into the Institute full time because she doesn't want to be a burden on Marlin and Doug as well.

[01:02:17] And so they they they realize that well Marlin and Doug come to say goodbye to Henry they give him a box of spam and Reese's that you and you said over.

[01:02:37] And then dogs like I like I like spam and Reese's box like who does that yeah Jesus done and do meet Alex is at this time to or Alexa yes Alexa is Alexa Alexa.

[01:02:55] She can hear me I think she wants to sleep.

[01:02:58] To say shit the only party I use is party you.

[01:03:14] Oh.

[01:03:15] Oh, Alexa what did you think about the movie 51st dates.

[01:03:23] This might answer your question 51st dates has an IMDb rating of 6.8 out of 10 from around 378,000 users and is rated PG 13.

[01:03:36] She said I ain't got no opinion.

[01:03:41] So Marlin also gives Doug a wrapped gift or not Doug Marlin.

[01:03:46] And Marlin also gives Henry a wrapped gift for his voyage and it happens to be like the beach was great as it so now Henry is at all in his fields listening to one that be nice.

[01:04:01] While sailing and then decides he needs to go find Lucy and so he goes to the Institute and walks into her class and he's like do you do you remember me.

[01:04:16] I don't know any idea who I am she says no but follow me and he goes to her art studio and it's just full of paintings of his face and my personal favorite him where his head is just an egg.

[01:04:32] Because she does mention that his head is shaped like an egg early in the movie and she said she tells him a dream about you almost every night.

[01:04:42] And he responds that being with you is the only way to have a full and happy life and you're the girl my dreams and I am obviously the man of yours and so.

[01:04:52] The last scene is Lucy waking up she has a tape that says watch me she's watching it and it's her and Henry getting married and explaining about her head trauma and then we see Doug and together in the wedding footage and then she walks up on deck and they are an Alaska studying not Wales.

[01:05:19] And she has a daughter and then Marlon is with them as well and that is 51 states.

[01:05:30] Well we've got some fun facts we still that lingering at a still got a bunch of debunked throughout the film.

[01:05:38] The film speaks Hawaiian alongside English to Henry and his kids sadly most locals wouldn't even be able to tell whether the things he said in Hawaiian are correct when European missionaries first discovered.

[01:05:51] Quote discovered Hawaii in the late 1700s they took it upon themselves to force the natives to learn English children who spoke Hawaiian at home were punished for using the language in school.

[01:06:05] Therefore the Hawaiian language along with much of the culture began to die out very few people still speak Hawaiian fluently and those who can't do so within their communities locals don't use even well known Hawaiian phrases like.

[01:06:21] Like Aloha.

[01:06:23] Mahalo nearly as often as the film would suggest did not know that interesting.

[01:06:33] And this movie was dedicated to Adam Sanders father Stan Sandler who died while they were making this movie I can't imagine how difficult that must have been for him to continue shooting.

[01:06:45] At the end of the movie Henry makes a video for Lucy to let her know but it happened since the accident the cost of memory loss in the video Henry says on one card red socks win the world series the next card read just kidding.

[01:06:58] The movie came out in February 2004 later that year the Red Sox actually broke an 86 year drought and won the World Series and coincidentally drew Barrymore was on the field with Jimmy Fallon after the win while filming screens for fever pitch.

[01:07:13] Adam Sam are likely came up with the joke because he is a Yankees fan.

[01:07:18] That's real or shadowing and really cool that she and then he did that yeah maybe he helped break the curse what else do we have among the first films in history this was one of the first films in history to re-released on the blue ray format back on June.

[01:07:36] Black back back in June of 2006 along with the Terminator for 1984 underworld evolution from 2006 hitch from 2005 House of Flying daggers from 2004 the fifth element for 97 and triple X from 2002 very very interesting mix of movies.

[01:07:58] The filmmakers weren't allowed film at an airport because they were at code orange due to post September 11 threats and as a result they filmed at a seaport near Pearl Harbor instead i'm assuming that's at the beginning of the movie when he's saying goodbye to his.

[01:08:14] Another connection to you and drew Barrymore Jackie drew Barrymore with going to swim at Konohi Bay i'm sorry if I said that wrong after work.

[01:08:24] After work during filming until a local told her about the shark infested waters.

[01:08:32] So I've since learned you push their heads down and away from you.

[01:08:41] Or you punch them in the face.

[01:08:42] I'm just trying out to be in their area i'm trying to respect them you know like I can't be mad they trying to eat me if i'm in their shit so i'm just going to my my business that's why I was like if I got bit by a shark you better believe i'm going to tattoo of that shark bite.

[01:09:06] The whip more house is the same house that girls lived in in the movie blue crush from 2002.

[01:09:15] And the movie was originally titled 51st kisses but changed to avoid confusion with you Barrymore's movie never been kissed from 1999.

[01:09:25] Makes sense.

[01:09:27] And the original script was set in Seattle interesting the hometown of the screenwriter George wing but i believe Adam Sandler changed that he does say that he likes if he's going to do a movie he wants it to be somewhere fun.

[01:09:43] Which makes sense when he's talking about like sailing up to Alaska and stuff it's a whole hell of a lot less distance going from Seattle to Alaska then it is to go from Hawaii to Alaska because PS if you didn't know Alaskan why are not next to each other like a map with.

[01:10:06] I did it for it's a jet to believe Alaska is up in Canada so it would take I looked it up it would take 19 days and seven hours.

[01:10:17] Estimate estimation to take a boat from Hawaii to Alaska.

[01:10:24] So long from Seattle to Alaska well i didn't know those details i have looked at some first hold please.

[01:10:32] Some of Lucy and Henry's dialogue was improvised by Adam Sandler and drew Barrymore they just have such good chemistry it makes me so happy to see them on screen together.

[01:10:43] Same and Seattle to Hawaii takes two days at sea you're correct very very close.

[01:10:51] Close.

[01:10:54] Versus the 19 days anything else we got I do believe I have some more debunked maybe let's see okay I do.

[01:11:06] Despite white people making up less than half of the resident population of Hawaii they make up almost all of the local main characters of the film native Hawaiians are less than 10% of the population.

[01:11:19] And a represented in the film by Rob Schneider's character ula Schneider himself is not Hawaiian as we said before but is part Filipino and ethnicity of which there are many in Hawaii.

[01:11:31] The majority of Hawaiians Hawaiian residents are or have ancestors who are Asian immigrants however aside from Sue played by the half Japanese Amy Hill.

[01:11:41] There are only two other minor care minor unnamed Asian characters in the film who have five or six lines total between them.

[01:11:51] Well in Nick has some yeah I think that's who they were saying was not named I think it's one unnamed okay and the grumpy guy well no there are to yet there's Nick and then there's two other unnamed because there's a guy who's playing.

[01:12:09] Golf with them he says a few lines as well that's true.

[01:12:15] And yeah there we have it 51st dates before we get into president ratings just want to remind you guys to follow us on social if you haven't already we are really trying to get those numbers up on YouTube so if you could prioritize if you haven't yet go subscribe.

[01:13:35] Yeah as much as there's some little things that I'm like I still really love this movie as much as I love wedding singer so it is still a would buy again for me.
