Mike Makes Mike Watch - Matewan (1987) / Spontaneous (2020)

It's time for our monthly Mike Makes Mike Watch! This month, Mike D is making Smith catch up with John Sayles' MATEWAN, while Smith is making Mike D watch a COVID-era favorite, SPONTANEOUS!

[00:00:00] Let's get together, talk about the movies that we saw this week.

[00:00:04] We'll have discussions, talk film news, we'll laugh a lot and act like geeks.

[00:00:07] Sometimes we'll have a guest or two, sometimes it's just the two of us.

[00:00:09] Let's crack some jokes and tell some folks to come along and hang with us!

[00:00:12] Mike and Mike go to the movies.

[00:00:17] Mike and Mike go to the movies.

[00:00:22] Yeah!

[00:00:25] You have chosen wisely.

[00:00:28] It's time for the show that wasn't meant to be an allegory for covid,

[00:00:30] but sort of became an allegory for covid due to the timing of its release.

[00:00:34] It's Mike and Mike go to the movies.

[00:00:35] I'm Mike Smith.

[00:00:36] And joining me as always is a union man through and through Mike

[00:00:40] Tecriccio. How's your name Mike?

[00:00:42] I'm doing great.

[00:00:43] I can't think of a more apt description than for this than that.

[00:00:48] Yeah. Good.

[00:00:50] How are you?

[00:00:51] Good. Good, good, good.

[00:00:53] Yes. Usual around here.

[00:00:55] As of this recording, recently wrapped up the International

[00:00:58] Wildlife Film Festival at the Roxy, which was a lot of fun.

[00:01:02] Had a lot of great filmmakers coming through, talking about their wildlife films,

[00:01:04] got to watch a couple of things and yeah, had a great time.

[00:01:07] It was excellent. But also exhausting.

[00:01:09] It was a lot of work.

[00:01:12] Yeah. Once it's over, you're like, man, I'm glad that's done.

[00:01:15] Yeah. But you're happy that it happened.

[00:01:17] Yes, exactly. Happy that it happened.

[00:01:19] Happy that everybody seemed to have a good time and that it was successful.

[00:01:21] But yeah, otherwise just trying to relax, chill, watch some Planet of the Apes movies.

[00:01:27] You know, I started my rewatch because Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

[00:01:32] I think will already be out by the time this episode comes out.

[00:01:35] OK, but it's not out yet.

[00:01:37] And as of this recording and so I was hoping to do like a whole Apes

[00:01:43] rewatch, like do the entire series, the original five movies,

[00:01:46] the Tim Burton remake and the three Caesar movies.

[00:01:49] And then, like as I got closer and closer, like May 10th is when it comes out.

[00:01:54] I'm just not going to have time to do that.

[00:01:55] So yeah, it's so soon.

[00:01:57] It's like two weeks away now or a week and a half away, whatever it is.

[00:02:00] So not doing that.

[00:02:01] I am instead just rewatching the Caesar trilogy,

[00:02:04] Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War of the Planet of the Apes.

[00:02:07] I've done Rise and Dawn so far.

[00:02:09] Watched Dawn last night.

[00:02:10] Modern Masterpiece, 10 out of 10.

[00:02:12] Just one of the best blockbusters of the 21st century.

[00:02:14] Yeah. So, so good.

[00:02:16] I have always really loved these movies

[00:02:18] and I'm only loving them more, I think, watching them now.

[00:02:21] You just watched them again a few months ago, right?

[00:02:23] We talked about it on the podcast.

[00:02:25] Yes, correct.

[00:02:25] Yeah, I had seen Dawn and Rise,

[00:02:28] but I had never seen War of the Planet of the Apes.

[00:02:30] And I think it was around when Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

[00:02:32] was first announced, the trailer was dropped.

[00:02:35] The trailer probably dropped, yeah.

[00:02:36] Yeah. I was like, you know what? I've never seen it.

[00:02:38] I'm going to go back and watch all those three.

[00:02:40] And yeah, it's a big

[00:02:43] don't forget what they took from us moment

[00:02:45] when you're watching these movies.

[00:02:46] Like they are incredible.

[00:02:47] There's no reason.

[00:02:49] There's no reason they're that good.

[00:02:50] And they just are.

[00:02:51] And War of the Planet of the Apes goes so hard

[00:02:54] that it's mind blowing, really.

[00:02:56] Like genuinely, I liked Dawn and Rise when I first saw them.

[00:03:01] And I remembered Rise being great.

[00:03:03] Yeah, I think you mixed it.

[00:03:04] Rise is the first one, Dawn's the second one.

[00:03:06] Dawn's the... Okay, Dawn is great.

[00:03:07] And I hate those titles because they mean the same thing.

[00:03:12] So yeah, whatever.

[00:03:14] The second one is great is what I'm getting at.

[00:03:15] And I remember when War for the Planet of the Apes came out.

[00:03:18] I was like, there's no way they hit again.

[00:03:20] Whatever.

[00:03:21] And I just never bothered to watch it.

[00:03:24] Even though everyone that's seen it says it's incredible.

[00:03:27] Yes, it was my number three movie of that year, if I recall correctly.

[00:03:30] I was like, I can't listen to Mike Smith. No way.

[00:03:35] So yeah, finally watched it and it blew my mind.

[00:03:37] And now I'm so hyped for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

[00:03:39] And I haven't paid attention if there's been any reactions yet

[00:03:42] or anything like that.

[00:03:43] I don't know if it's like out available,

[00:03:44] if there's an embargo or whatever.

[00:03:46] I've not seen any reviews yet for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

[00:03:49] And so I don't know.

[00:03:50] I think the premise sounds really cool.

[00:03:51] Do you like know what it's about?

[00:03:52] Have you just seen the trailer or like...

[00:03:54] Yeah, I've seen the trailer and I know it's like the future

[00:03:56] and like it's like a whole other thing.

[00:03:58] It's yeah, it's like 300 years after War for the Planet of the Apes.

[00:04:01] And so several generations removed.

[00:04:03] It's like a whole new group of apes.

[00:04:05] They've like fully taken over the planet, I think.

[00:04:07] And I don't know, just the trailer with the King Monkey going,

[00:04:11] Oh, what a wonderful day!

[00:04:13] I'm all in.

[00:04:14] Sounds great.

[00:04:15] Yeah, I'm really looking forward to Kingdom.

[00:04:17] I hope it's really good.

[00:04:18] But yeah, reviews have not come out yet, but I think it will be good.

[00:04:21] I'm guessing it will be good.

[00:04:23] I'm not sure if it'll be as good as Dawn or War,

[00:04:26] which again, modern masterpieces.

[00:04:28] Correct.

[00:04:29] And I haven't gotten the chance to rewatch War yet.

[00:04:31] I'm excited to because I have not seen that one since the theater.

[00:04:34] I've not seen that one since 2017.

[00:04:36] And I really I hadn't watched any of these since War came out.

[00:04:38] Like I remember I did a rewatch of Rise and Dawn before War.

[00:04:41] I saw War and really loved it and haven't watched these movies since.

[00:04:45] And that's a shame. That's on me.

[00:04:47] I should be watching these movies all the time.

[00:04:49] Just all the time.

[00:04:50] Yeah, I'm excited for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

[00:04:53] because it's got on top of everything else.

[00:04:56] But also Freya Allen is the main human, it seems like.

[00:04:59] From Gunpowder Milkshake.

[00:05:00] And Gunpowder Milkshake.

[00:05:02] Yeah. So excited for that.

[00:05:04] You know, when you have somebody in a booth thing that's like,

[00:05:06] I hope this is your breakout.

[00:05:07] You know, like I was really pulling for that Lord of the Rings show to be good.

[00:05:10] So Morfred Clark would really breakout.

[00:05:12] That's a shame about that.

[00:05:13] But so, yeah, I'm excited for Freya Allen.

[00:05:16] Hopefully, hopefully this is really great.

[00:05:17] Although it is the Maze Runner guy.

[00:05:19] So I guess we'll see.

[00:05:20] I mean, hey, you know what?

[00:05:21] I've never seen the Maze Runner.

[00:05:22] So I'm going in blind.

[00:05:24] True, me neither actually.

[00:05:25] I have no preconceptions of what this is.

[00:05:28] It may be the Maze Runner guy, but this is also the Apes.

[00:05:30] You know, that's true.

[00:05:31] And generally speaking, plenty of movies, they hit pretty good.

[00:05:34] Like they even like the bad ones are good.

[00:05:36] You know, like that kind of like that kind of thing.

[00:05:38] And I haven't seen like I wanted to do a whole rewatch

[00:05:41] because it's been a very long time since I've watched Rise,

[00:05:43] Don't and more, but it's probably been even longer since I've watched the really old ones.

[00:05:46] I mean, the original Planet of the Apes was like an all time or favorite for me.

[00:05:51] I loved 1960s Planet of the Apes growing.

[00:05:53] Hell yeah. That was that was a big movie for me and my dad.

[00:05:56] Like I discovered that twist, like not knowing it,

[00:05:59] like going in like, you know, that kind of thing.

[00:06:00] Like it was like, oh my God, like it blew my mind.

[00:06:02] And I remember watching at least some of the I don't think we ever watched all five,

[00:06:06] but we watched the original a few times.

[00:06:07] And I think I've definitely seen up through three.

[00:06:09] And have you seen any of the originals, Mike?

[00:06:11] Well, just the first one.

[00:06:12] Just see the original.

[00:06:13] Yeah, Planet of the Apes.

[00:06:14] But I've never seen any of those sequels.

[00:06:15] You've never seen Beneath the Planet of the Apes?

[00:06:17] No.

[00:06:17] Have you? Do you know how it ends?

[00:06:18] I know, but I feel like I should see it as a J.

[00:06:23] Lee Thompson guy.

[00:06:24] Is that one of the J.

[00:06:24] Lee Thompson ones?

[00:06:25] I know he did a bunch of those sequels.

[00:06:26] I think he did like four and five.

[00:06:28] I'm not.

[00:06:29] Beneath is the second one.

[00:06:30] OK, then definitely not.

[00:06:31] But Neath the Planet of the Apes has maybe the most bleak ending

[00:06:35] I've ever seen in any movie.

[00:06:37] Well, you got to watch it, Mike.

[00:06:39] It's like the first two thirds of the movie are just like,

[00:06:41] here's Planet of the Apes again.

[00:06:43] But then like the last third of the movie is so insane and so good.

[00:06:48] And like really like that made more of an impression on me

[00:06:50] as a kid growing up than the ending of the original Planet of the Apes,

[00:06:53] which is incredible, completely like, you know, mess with my mind and stuff.

[00:06:57] And then I think the third one is Conquest, which involves time travel

[00:07:00] where the apes travel back to 1970s to save the whales.

[00:07:05] Oh, no, that's that's Star Trek.

[00:07:07] Yeah, no, they travel back to like present day 1970s and they do something.

[00:07:13] I don't even remember what the apes are doing,

[00:07:15] but that's why I want to rewatch it.

[00:07:16] I haven't I haven't gone back and watched those ones a long time.

[00:07:19] So maybe after Kingdom comes out, I might do an old apes rewatch.

[00:07:23] OK, and that'll be that'll be good because Kingdom is still a prequel

[00:07:27] to those movies.

[00:07:28] It'll be it'll be our bonus bonus series.

[00:07:34] We're going to have the complete works during the main feed.

[00:07:36] Every other week bonus episodes, I'm going to go to the movies

[00:07:38] on the weeks that we're not doing that.

[00:07:40] It's apes retrospect.

[00:07:43] You want to donate fifty dollars at Kofi dot com slash Mike and Mike Pods.

[00:07:47] You can make it happen.

[00:07:48] Be the change you want to see in the world. Absolutely.

[00:07:50] So yeah, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

[00:07:52] Very excited about it.

[00:07:53] By the time this comes out, I probably will have seen it

[00:07:55] and I'll let you know if it was good or not.

[00:07:58] But yeah, so that's 10 minutes on Planet of the Apes.

[00:08:01] That's 10 minutes on Planet of the Apes.

[00:08:02] That's not what today's episode is.

[00:08:07] But we're just always thinking about war for the planet.

[00:08:10] Just low key, man.

[00:08:11] Dude, Dawn is so good.

[00:08:13] I watched Dawn last night and there's so many incredible shots in that movie.

[00:08:17] Just and yeah, they heightened Shakespearean tragedy of Caesar

[00:08:21] and Coba and man when Coba tries to assassinate Caesar, that's like

[00:08:25] devastating.

[00:08:26] Andy Serkis should have gotten an Oscar for for real.

[00:08:29] The apes. I looked up who won the Oscar that year

[00:08:32] and it was Eddie Redmayne for stupid Stephen Hawking movie.

[00:08:35] If there's any non deserving actors, my least favorite actor

[00:08:40] currently working today, enemy of the pod ready.

[00:08:43] And enemy of the podcast, Eddie Redmayne won the Oscar for Stephen Hawking movie

[00:08:47] and Andy Serkis wasn't even nominated for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,

[00:08:50] which is a travesty.

[00:08:51] I remember when these were coming out, everybody's like, you need a motion

[00:08:54] capture performance category or something like that.

[00:08:56] Yeah. And I think absolutely when you're watching them, you're like,

[00:08:59] how how is there not some kind of special Oscar recognition?

[00:09:02] Yeah, even what's his name?

[00:09:04] Toby Kebbel or whatever that plays Coba.

[00:09:06] Yeah, credible to everybody is so so good.

[00:09:08] Yeah. And so yeah, I'm excited.

[00:09:10] I'm hoping that we get some great mo cat performances with this new one

[00:09:13] too, with Andy Serkis not being in it, which like that, that feels like,

[00:09:16] oh man, it's a bummer to not have him there, but also after war,

[00:09:19] it would be very tough to have them.

[00:09:21] Yeah, that'd be tough.

[00:09:22] In any case, today is a Mike makes Mike watch.

[00:09:24] We are neither of us made either of us watch a Planet of the Apes movie.

[00:09:28] We need to pivot from from Planet of the Apes to a very serious,

[00:09:33] naturalistic historical drama.

[00:09:35] What what are the Planet of the Apes movies about?

[00:09:37] If not the Apes unionizing.

[00:09:39] You're so right, though.

[00:09:41] You're so correct.

[00:09:42] Eight Together Strong is basically the front.

[00:09:46] The premise of Matewan.

[00:09:48] Yes, Don of the Planet of the Apes, Matewan, they're the same film.

[00:09:51] Today is a Mike makes Mike watch.

[00:09:53] And today, Mike is making me watch John Sales's film from 1987.

[00:09:58] Matewan, which I actually was trying to see a couple of months ago.

[00:10:03] We played it at the Roxy and I couldn't go for whatever reason.

[00:10:06] It might have just been I might have been working.

[00:10:07] It might have been something going on, but I couldn't go see Matewan.

[00:10:09] But I did promise people I was going to watch it soon.

[00:10:12] And so my defunding made me do that, which I'm very excited about.

[00:10:15] And I made Mike DeWash 2020's spontaneous directed by Brian

[00:10:19] Duffield, who recently had a pretty big like streaming hit on Hulu.

[00:10:23] No one will save you.

[00:10:24] Also was involved with underwater, which I know you're a big fan of my fan.

[00:10:28] And yeah, and had like several movies kind of hit during Covid in like 2020, 2021.

[00:10:33] Right? Yes. Yeah.

[00:10:34] I remember hearing him.

[00:10:35] I think it was probably I guess around spontaneous coming out

[00:10:37] was on a couple podcasts and stuff that I'd listened to.

[00:10:40] And they asked him about that.

[00:10:41] And he said it was basically the Fox merger with Disney delayed

[00:10:45] all of his movies and they all came out in the same.

[00:10:47] You know, his first three movies all came out in one year.

[00:10:50] He's like, I had nothing that just by chance.

[00:10:52] Yeah. So a weird coincidence that that happens.

[00:10:56] But yes, a meet one and spontaneous are the two movies we're talking about today.

[00:11:00] So which of these which lights up at first, Mike, let's do let's do meet one.

[00:11:04] All right. Cool.

[00:11:05] It's time for a Mike makes Mike watch.

[00:11:08] I hope they choose right.

[00:11:10] Mike's watching Mike's movie.

[00:11:13] Picks for him specially.

[00:11:15] Whoa, it's just another night.

[00:11:18] Mike's watching Mike's movie.

[00:11:21] They vary in quality.

[00:11:26] Hit were 19 and 20 in the Southwest field and things is tough.

[00:11:31] The miners is trying to bring a union West Virginia

[00:11:35] and the coal operators and their gun thugs are set on keeping them out.

[00:11:43] Then was hard people.

[00:11:44] You're coal miners then they wouldn't nobody who want to cross.

[00:11:49] So push come to shove and pretty soon we had us a war down there in Mango County,

[00:11:54] which in them days was known as bloody mango.

[00:11:58] That's where it all come to a head.

[00:12:00] They're on tug for in the town of my one.

[00:13:03] So here's the thing about rise the planet of the apes.

[00:13:05] No, no, of course, that was in the trailer for mate one monkey.

[00:13:10] Ape together strong. Yeah, exactly.

[00:13:12] You have made one directed by John sales and from the year 1987

[00:13:17] starring people like Chris Cooper and James Earl Jones.

[00:13:19] So mighty why make one?

[00:13:21] Why did you want to make me watch this movie?

[00:13:23] I discovered this movie.

[00:13:25] I think there's a criterion of it and that was how I found it the first time.

[00:13:28] Yes, but yeah, John sales just in general is one of those directors

[00:13:32] that or filmmakers because he's also a very prolific writer.

[00:13:36] I haven't seen a ton of his stuff or when I hear like

[00:13:40] it'll be like, oh, that's the John sales movie.

[00:13:41] Like, yeah, yeah, yeah, that makes sense that like I knew that already.

[00:13:45] Like, you know, you just can kind of tell.

[00:13:46] Right. And he's got a really fascinating arc.

[00:13:49] You know, I think he wrote Piranha and like, yeah, he did.

[00:13:52] He did a lot of like Roger Corman stuff, like kind of genre, like heavy stuff.

[00:13:56] I mean, he wrote Piranha.

[00:13:57] He wrote Battle Beyond the Stars, Alligator, Joe Dante's The Howling.

[00:14:02] Like these are all John sales movies.

[00:14:04] Yeah, which is incredible.

[00:14:05] And then pivots to like really serious, like social pictures.

[00:14:09] Yes. And the thing about all this Corbin stuff is like

[00:14:11] they all have that element in them.

[00:14:13] Like, you know, it's all about police and their government,

[00:14:15] whatever and all this stuff, you know, Piranha, all everything.

[00:14:18] You know, yeah, I just watched Boxcar Bertha for the first time

[00:14:22] couple weeks ago, which is a Roger Corman production

[00:14:25] and also Martin Scorsese's second film.

[00:14:27] And it's really interesting to watch because you can feel Scorsese,

[00:14:31] but you can also feel Corman.

[00:14:32] And yeah, it's like these two like very opposing things

[00:14:37] that sort of clashing and creating something pretty cool.

[00:14:39] I like Boxcar Bertha a lot.

[00:14:40] I see. I've never seen that, but I know about it.

[00:14:42] So yes, John sales is somebody that I'm like

[00:14:45] very interested in in general as a filmmaker and an artist

[00:14:49] and all that stuff. And then I remember seeing

[00:14:52] the Roxy tweeting or posting on Instagram about

[00:14:55] Matewan playing there and then you saying you didn't get a chance to go.

[00:14:58] And I was like, well, I got to show my mate one

[00:15:00] because I love this movie is incredible.

[00:15:02] So yeah, and then I picked May because May Day, May 1st

[00:15:06] is like, you know, international rights,

[00:15:09] workers rights, labor movement thing.

[00:15:10] And if you ever wondered why America's Labor Day is in September,

[00:15:13] it's so we don't have any sort of international solidarity

[00:15:16] with all the other workers rights movements that happened in May.

[00:15:19] So think about think about that for a second.

[00:15:22] I did not know about that.

[00:15:23] Yes. So that's why.

[00:15:24] Yeah. And plus it's one of those movies,

[00:15:26] especially everything that's been going on in the in the world

[00:15:28] and in the social movements that have been happening

[00:15:32] in the last couple of years.

[00:15:33] I watched me when I think in twenty twenty one or twenty

[00:15:35] twenty two for the first time, it was just like immediately

[00:15:38] fired up about about everything that's happening in the world.

[00:15:42] And you know, following the big high profile

[00:15:44] WGA and Sag Strikes and the UWA, the auto workers and all that stuff.

[00:15:49] I was like, hell yeah, we got to get we got to get Union movies

[00:15:52] action going on in May on the pod.

[00:15:55] So it all came together for me one.

[00:15:57] Well, tell me what you thought about me one.

[00:15:58] I thought it rocked. It's really good.

[00:15:59] Yeah, it's fantastic.

[00:16:02] Yeah, no, I really, really loved May 1.

[00:16:05] This movie is really gripping from moment ones that we haven't

[00:16:09] really even talked about what it's about other than a union.

[00:16:11] But this is kind of dramatizing the events.

[00:16:13] This is like sort of based on a true story, right?

[00:16:15] Like it's yes.

[00:16:16] Yeah, real events.

[00:16:17] Yeah, based on real events, but sort of fictionalizing them.

[00:16:20] And yeah, it's about a coal miner strike in 1920

[00:16:22] in this very small town of Matewan in the hills of West Virginia.

[00:16:26] And it's about these coal workers who are fed up with the worker

[00:16:30] conditions, the long hours, the dangerous conditions that they're in,

[00:16:33] like, you know, the diseases and the death that like results in their labor.

[00:16:38] And so they go on strike and Chris Cooper comes into town

[00:16:41] and he's the one who leads the charge to help them go on strike.

[00:16:44] He plays Joe Kenahan.

[00:16:45] This is Chris Cooper's first movie, which is insane.

[00:16:48] Absolutely insane because he's unbelievable in it.

[00:16:51] Yeah.

[00:16:51] And you know, I believe he was like he was a stage actor

[00:16:54] for a few years before this and stuff.

[00:16:55] But like yeah, first film knocked out the knocked out the park.

[00:16:58] He's he's insane in this movie.

[00:17:00] He's so good.

[00:17:01] Yeah, he's amazing and he looks incredible.

[00:17:03] And yeah, it's another one of those things that like you watch

[00:17:05] this movie and you're like, I should research the real thing

[00:17:08] because it's interesting.

[00:17:09] This is a real interesting thing.

[00:17:10] And then you're like, oh yeah, people literally fought the US Army

[00:17:14] so we could have a five day workweek.

[00:17:18] That's fucking insane.

[00:17:20] Yeah.

[00:17:21] So anyway, he rolls in the other day.

[00:17:24] The miners go on strike.

[00:17:27] He is the man sent by the Union to help organize them

[00:17:30] and how do to coach them into this through the strike

[00:17:32] and how to survive it.

[00:17:34] And then the kind of, you know, paranoia thriller that ensues

[00:17:37] basically as the Union or as the coal company sends in private

[00:17:42] I think it's what is it the Baldwin Feltz company or something

[00:17:44] like the not Pinkerton's they're basically the Pinkerton's

[00:17:47] you know, same idea sends in, you know, thugs and gunmen

[00:17:51] and all this stuff.

[00:17:53] We got a David straight there and in here.

[00:17:55] He's great as Sid Hatfield.

[00:17:57] Yeah, he's the the police chief of the town, which yeah,

[00:18:00] very cool to see him and also James Joel Jones.

[00:18:03] Oh my God.

[00:18:04] So one thing I like about this movie is that it's you know,

[00:18:06] it's about this whole it's about the Union strike and it's

[00:18:08] about the workers rights and everything like that.

[00:18:10] But then it's also about race relations in the 1920s

[00:18:12] and about, you know, when James L Jones is first introduced

[00:18:15] like the company is basically being like, well, we're

[00:18:18] going to hire colored workers at a very low rates.

[00:18:22] Right there scabs.

[00:18:23] Yeah, there's there scabs.

[00:18:24] And so everybody is against them because of that.

[00:18:27] And on top of that, there's racist in the town and

[00:18:30] like there's racism and stuff, but they end up being

[00:18:33] able to bring them onto the Union and you know, form

[00:18:35] a stronger Union because James L Jones is like a representative

[00:18:38] for them and he is incredible at this movie.

[00:18:41] He's so, so good.

[00:18:43] And yeah, it's one of those things where like James

[00:18:45] L Jones, an actor that I've always loved, but like

[00:18:47] I mostly loved him for his voice because of Darth Vader

[00:18:49] and Mufasa and all that kind of stuff.

[00:18:52] And yeah, getting to watch him in a live action

[00:18:54] setting with like without a mask on or whatever

[00:18:58] and just do his thing and kill it is really great.

[00:19:00] I really love seeing him in this.

[00:19:01] Yeah.

[00:19:02] Yeah.

[00:19:02] And he's like, yeah, I guess he's just like playing

[00:19:04] a character, you know, like, yeah, it's the same thing.

[00:19:06] Like he's either James Earl Jones himself or the

[00:19:09] voiceover guy for me also.

[00:19:11] So like to see him just like really being just,

[00:19:13] you know, in a movie is like in itself an experience.

[00:19:17] And yeah, I think the movie is fascinating in that

[00:19:19] it has them, you know, the company brings in these

[00:19:21] scabs, these, you know, African-American people and

[00:19:24] they like there's that one scene when he when he

[00:19:27] when few clothes his name, his character crashes

[00:19:29] the Union meeting and they call him a bunch of stuff,

[00:19:32] you know, yeah.

[00:19:33] And he's like, I've been called all these things,

[00:19:35] but I've but I've never been called a scab and he's

[00:19:37] like, I'm a Union man.

[00:19:38] And there's like, yeah, like, you know, it's like

[00:19:40] such a moment where but not really.

[00:19:41] I mean, I guess actually in the movie, it's not

[00:19:43] really that kind of thing because Kenahan has

[00:19:45] to convince the white Union members to allow

[00:19:47] these non-white people into the into the Union

[00:19:49] and the Italian immigrants that the others like

[00:19:52] the other group of scabs that the company has

[00:19:54] brought in and yeah, it's all about that tension

[00:19:56] in the first half really of like is this going

[00:19:58] to work?

[00:19:59] Are these racist going to recognize that the more

[00:20:02] people in the Union ape together strong or not?

[00:20:06] And there's that kind of really triumphant moment

[00:20:07] sort of like in the mid at midpoint when they're

[00:20:09] at the like night shift for the for the mine

[00:20:12] when they're the scabs are going to go in

[00:20:13] and they all throw their shovels down and turn

[00:20:15] around and join the Union and that's when it's

[00:20:17] like, yeah, let's go.

[00:20:18] And yeah, I think this movie just rocks and

[00:20:19] it's a really like inspiring, you know, yeah,

[00:20:22] absolutely.

[00:20:22] I also mean as your workplace moment.

[00:20:24] Yeah, one thing I also really love.

[00:20:26] So this is you have to small town.

[00:20:28] It's 1920s.

[00:20:28] It's obviously like a heavily Christian town,

[00:20:30] pretty religious, right?

[00:20:31] And so every Sunday they all go to church

[00:20:33] and there's this preacher there played by John

[00:20:35] sales.

[00:20:36] Yeah, and he is like preaching anti-union stuff.

[00:20:40] He is like he's in the pocket of the company

[00:20:44] right and and he's like actively like,

[00:20:46] you know, trying to dissuade them from joining

[00:20:48] the Union all that kind of stuff.

[00:20:50] And meanwhile, there's this kid there Danny

[00:20:52] who is like, you know, part of like he's

[00:20:55] the the son of Elmer Radner who like houses

[00:20:58] Chris Cooper for a while.

[00:20:59] The boarding house.

[00:21:00] Yeah, and he's a preacher but he's like

[00:21:02] heavily pro-union and there's a moment

[00:21:05] there when you're watching John sales kind

[00:21:06] of give those anti-union stick and then

[00:21:09] Danny has to go up next and you're like,

[00:21:10] oh man is Danny going to sell out his

[00:21:12] beliefs to you know, try to try to fit

[00:21:14] in with the church or whatever and he

[00:21:16] goes harder into it and it's yeah,

[00:21:17] big, big awesome.

[00:21:19] Yeah, his his homily or whatever towards

[00:21:23] the end of the movie when he when he

[00:21:24] realizes who is like ratted out Kenahan.

[00:21:28] Yeah, or set up Kenahan and he gives

[00:21:30] that like that whole metaphor about

[00:21:32] the wives and the worker and all this

[00:21:34] stuff is so good and that like slow

[00:21:36] wave of realization across the the

[00:21:39] miners that are there and they're

[00:21:40] like no God like send that one guy

[00:21:42] running to stop a few clothes from

[00:21:44] killing Kenahan is so good.

[00:21:46] Like oh man.

[00:21:47] Yeah.

[00:21:47] So so good.

[00:21:48] Yeah, it's awesome.

[00:21:49] This movie is great and I'm glad you

[00:21:50] liked it and I think I think it's

[00:21:51] also like just like also very

[00:21:53] interesting like as a movie,

[00:21:55] you know, like a lot of the it's

[00:21:57] starts with the like non diegetic

[00:21:59] score, but then once they go on strike,

[00:22:01] all the music is just people in the

[00:22:03] camp playing music like in the

[00:22:04] background or off or like in the

[00:22:06] side of the frames and stuff.

[00:22:07] So it's all turns into this like

[00:22:09] diegetic score, which is very cool

[00:22:10] and it's all you know,

[00:22:11] traditionals and folk songs and all

[00:22:13] that stuff all throughout.

[00:22:14] It's very very good.

[00:22:15] Yeah, absolutely.

[00:22:16] And yeah, I'm moving looks incredible

[00:22:18] too.

[00:22:18] I mean so at the time box office

[00:22:21] flop made it made one did not make

[00:22:22] money.

[00:22:23] People did not go see it and yeah,

[00:22:25] I think I think it's one that kind

[00:22:26] of got rediscovered over the last

[00:22:28] few years, but it did get one

[00:22:31] Oscar nomination at the time which

[00:22:33] was for best cinematography.

[00:22:34] Really?

[00:22:34] Yeah, fascinating.

[00:22:35] Yeah, and I think deserves it.

[00:22:37] It looks great.

[00:22:37] Look, it looks it's a really

[00:22:38] good looking movie and yeah,

[00:22:40] also wanted to mention Hickey

[00:22:42] and Griggs are maybe the most

[00:22:45] evil bastards I've ever seen on

[00:22:46] film.

[00:22:46] Just the worst humans.

[00:22:48] Yes.

[00:22:49] So they are the ones who the

[00:22:50] company sends down to you know,

[00:22:52] try to dissuade the Union talk

[00:22:54] and try to like, you know,

[00:22:56] get everybody dispersed just go

[00:22:57] back to work right.

[00:22:58] Break the strike.

[00:22:58] Break the strike.

[00:22:59] Yeah.

[00:22:59] And yeah, the second they they

[00:23:01] walk on screen.

[00:23:02] They're the slimmiest slime

[00:23:04] balls that have ever slimed

[00:23:05] and they they leave the train

[00:23:07] they got off the train.

[00:23:08] They're at the train station

[00:23:09] and somebody's waiting there.

[00:23:10] I think it's Elma.

[00:23:11] No, it's a Bridie May.

[00:23:13] I think is her character.

[00:23:14] Oh, yeah, but oh, you Bridie

[00:23:15] May and she likes to tells

[00:23:16] them ago.

[00:23:17] Yeah, I wait here and I see

[00:23:18] off everybody and you know all

[00:23:20] that kind of stuff hangs out of

[00:23:21] the train station.

[00:23:21] Yeah.

[00:23:22] Yeah, hang out of the train

[00:23:22] station and they are kind of

[00:23:24] nice to her for a second and

[00:23:25] then just like start insulting

[00:23:27] her hard.

[00:23:28] And you know, and then they

[00:23:30] just like just keep doing that

[00:23:31] to everybody in town.

[00:23:33] They're they're big neg people.

[00:23:35] Oh yeah.

[00:23:35] And yeah, it's it's pretty

[00:23:38] intense that they they are

[00:23:40] like the most cartoonishly

[00:23:41] evil part of the movie,

[00:23:42] but also incredibly realistic.

[00:23:44] Like it's a weird like

[00:23:45] balance they strike.

[00:23:46] Yeah, that's the thing.

[00:23:47] That's the thing about these

[00:23:48] people. These these private

[00:23:50] detective companies in this

[00:23:52] era were just literal monsters.

[00:23:54] Yeah, like they're like they

[00:23:56] they try to evict people

[00:23:57] because you know the whole thing.

[00:23:58] Of course, it's a company town.

[00:23:59] So technically the company owns

[00:24:01] the deeds to all the property

[00:24:02] right there allowing these

[00:24:04] people to live there.

[00:24:05] So at any moment they can

[00:24:05] throw them out.

[00:24:06] They got the company store and

[00:24:07] they pay them in company

[00:24:08] script, right?

[00:24:09] And all this stuff.

[00:24:09] Right.

[00:24:10] And so yeah, that moment when

[00:24:12] they're evicting everybody and

[00:24:14] Sid Hatfield, Javis

[00:24:16] Strathearn's character who

[00:24:17] is which is fascinating that he

[00:24:18] is one of the Hatfields and

[00:24:19] McCoys like right.

[00:24:20] He's one of those guys shows

[00:24:22] up and is like, yeah, you don't

[00:24:23] have a warrant.

[00:24:23] Get the fuck out of here.

[00:24:24] Like kicks him out.

[00:24:25] It like stops them from evicting

[00:24:26] everybody.

[00:24:27] It's like the only time they

[00:24:28] I think I think he even says

[00:24:29] it in the movie.

[00:24:29] It's like the only time a law

[00:24:30] man's ever gone up against the

[00:24:31] company instead of going along

[00:24:33] with them.

[00:24:34] Right.

[00:24:35] It's very intense.

[00:24:36] And yeah, it just draws out

[00:24:37] Grigsy.

[00:24:38] There's just so awful those

[00:24:39] guys.

[00:24:39] They say absolutely.

[00:24:40] And they instigate a lot of

[00:24:42] conflict throughout the movie.

[00:24:43] And then it ultimately kind of

[00:24:44] ends with this huge gunfight

[00:24:46] that the company has like all

[00:24:47] these mercenaries they've hired

[00:24:48] to attack the townspeople

[00:24:49] with and Sid Hatfield's

[00:24:51] kind of just start shooting.

[00:24:53] So anyway, I started blasting.

[00:24:56] Yeah.

[00:24:57] And Kenahan gets killed in the

[00:24:58] fight.

[00:24:59] He gets killed.

[00:25:00] Yeah.

[00:25:00] The real man who went to prison

[00:25:02] for refusing the World War

[00:25:04] One draft.

[00:25:05] All right.

[00:25:05] He talks about that.

[00:25:06] Right.

[00:25:07] Being a pacifist and stuff

[00:25:08] and yeah, he gets killed

[00:25:09] with a crossfire by accident

[00:25:11] and

[00:25:13] the like real thing is

[00:25:14] insane and people should look

[00:25:15] into it.

[00:25:16] But yeah, this happened.

[00:25:17] There was a big shootout in

[00:25:18] Matewan.

[00:25:18] They were like, you know,

[00:25:19] Matewan massacre or whatever.

[00:25:20] Right.

[00:25:21] And Sid Hatfield, I don't

[00:25:22] remember if he was acquitted.

[00:25:24] Who's the sheriff or police

[00:25:26] chief or whatever or was at

[00:25:28] the trial.

[00:25:28] I forget exactly what it was.

[00:25:30] But as he was walking out of

[00:25:31] the courthouse, the Baldwin

[00:25:32] Felt Agency dudes rolled up

[00:25:34] on him in real life and the

[00:25:35] real thing and assassinated him

[00:25:37] on the streets steps of the

[00:25:38] courthouse and nothing

[00:25:39] happened.

[00:25:40] Not a single person was

[00:25:41] tried or convicted or anything.

[00:25:43] Insane.

[00:25:44] I believe that is mentioned

[00:25:45] in this like in the

[00:25:46] epilogue thing.

[00:25:47] The ending voiceover that Danny

[00:25:48] has right?

[00:25:49] Yeah.

[00:25:49] Yeah.

[00:25:50] But like when you read it,

[00:25:51] like it's insane that that

[00:25:53] just happened.

[00:25:54] Yes.

[00:25:55] And it was fine.

[00:25:57] Yeah.

[00:25:58] Check that out.

[00:25:58] I think there's a book.

[00:25:59] I think it's called The

[00:26:00] Battle of Blair Mountain,

[00:26:02] which is the larger labor

[00:26:05] union movement that happened

[00:26:06] in West Virginia that

[00:26:07] Matewan is part of.

[00:26:08] OK.

[00:26:09] So check that out if you

[00:26:10] want to learn more of the

[00:26:11] real history and stuff about

[00:26:12] how, like I said, people

[00:26:13] literally fought the army for

[00:26:15] us to have a 40 hour work

[00:26:16] week.

[00:26:17] Yeah.

[00:26:18] Which is insane.

[00:26:19] So thank you to the mate.

[00:26:20] The Matewan coal people.

[00:26:21] I guess so.

[00:26:22] Yeah.

[00:26:22] Shout out to them.

[00:26:23] Yeah.

[00:26:23] Shout out to the coal miners,

[00:26:25] the 1920s and John sales

[00:26:26] from making Matewan.

[00:26:27] What a picture.

[00:26:28] It's so good.

[00:26:28] What a picture.

[00:26:29] Yeah.

[00:26:29] Yeah.

[00:26:30] Yeah.

[00:26:30] Really enjoyed Matewan.

[00:26:31] It's not really easily

[00:26:32] available right now unless

[00:26:33] you have the Criterion

[00:26:34] Blu-ray like it's not

[00:26:35] streaming anywhere.

[00:26:35] Yeah.

[00:26:36] And including like you

[00:26:37] can't just like buy it

[00:26:38] on Amazon.

[00:26:39] You can't rent it anywhere.

[00:26:40] Yeah.

[00:26:40] I don't really know what

[00:26:41] the deal is.

[00:26:42] I don't know.

[00:26:43] I think it's been on

[00:26:44] Criterion channel in the past

[00:26:45] and so I would imagine

[00:26:46] it'll pop up again there

[00:26:48] at some point.

[00:26:49] Maybe one day you'll be

[00:26:49] watching Criterion 24 7

[00:26:51] and Matewan will pop up.

[00:26:52] There you go.

[00:26:53] But yeah,

[00:26:54] if you get the chance to

[00:26:54] watch Matewan,

[00:26:55] I recommend it's great.

[00:26:56] I wish I'd seen in the

[00:26:57] theater like a couple

[00:26:58] months ago,

[00:26:58] but I'm glad that you made

[00:26:59] me watch it like.

[00:27:00] Yeah,

[00:27:01] it's it's it's awesome.

[00:27:02] It's it's so understated

[00:27:04] for so long.

[00:27:05] Yeah.

[00:27:06] Until like the gun battle

[00:27:07] and then it's like

[00:27:08] like John Milius style

[00:27:09] squibs like they're

[00:27:10] gigantic like they're

[00:27:11] so juicy and yeah.

[00:27:12] Watching the gun battle

[00:27:13] I was like,

[00:27:13] Oh yeah,

[00:27:13] John sales wrote Piranha,

[00:27:15] you know,

[00:27:16] exactly.

[00:27:17] Yeah.

[00:27:18] But yeah,

[00:27:19] any other thoughts

[00:27:19] about Matewan like

[00:27:20] before you move on

[00:27:21] into our other movie?

[00:27:22] No,

[00:27:22] I guess that's it.

[00:27:22] Everything is great.

[00:27:23] Chris,

[00:27:24] Chris Cooper,

[00:27:25] literally a revelation

[00:27:26] in this movie.

[00:27:27] Yeah,

[00:27:27] unbelievable movie.

[00:27:28] Yeah.

[00:27:28] Yeah.

[00:27:28] Actor I've always liked

[00:27:30] but like,

[00:27:30] you know,

[00:27:30] he's somebody who

[00:27:32] I don't know,

[00:27:32] he just always look

[00:27:32] around.

[00:27:33] Like I,

[00:27:33] yeah,

[00:27:34] I never like think

[00:27:34] about like,

[00:27:35] Oh yeah,

[00:27:35] Chris Cooper's in this.

[00:27:36] Sure.

[00:27:36] Whatever.

[00:27:37] But yeah,

[00:27:37] he's he's fantastic in

[00:27:38] this and I think

[00:27:39] we talked about him.

[00:27:40] You made me watch

[00:27:41] October Sky a while back.

[00:27:43] Oh man.

[00:27:44] And weird like

[00:27:46] juxtaposition between

[00:27:47] his character and

[00:27:47] Matewan where in

[00:27:49] October Sky,

[00:27:50] he's anti-Cole Union.

[00:27:52] Yeah,

[00:27:52] he's the yeah,

[00:27:53] that's right.

[00:27:53] I forgot.

[00:27:53] He's the one against

[00:27:54] the Union.

[00:27:55] He's management in

[00:27:55] that movie.

[00:27:56] That's why.

[00:27:57] Yeah.

[00:27:58] He's management.

[00:27:58] Yeah.

[00:27:59] Yeah.

[00:27:59] But there's something

[00:28:00] about this guy

[00:28:00] that just screams

[00:28:01] he should be around

[00:28:01] coal.

[00:28:02] He's a yeah,

[00:28:03] he's a good old boy.

[00:28:05] A good,

[00:28:05] a good good old boy.

[00:28:06] Right.

[00:28:08] All right.

[00:28:08] So that is Matewan

[00:28:09] from 1987.

[00:28:11] Now it's time to

[00:28:11] move on into our

[00:28:12] other movie from

[00:28:13] Mike makes Mike Watch

[00:28:13] the movie.

[00:28:14] I made my D watch

[00:28:15] which is

[00:28:15] spontaneous.

[00:28:18] Hey Mara.

[00:28:19] This is the guy.

[00:28:19] This is

[00:28:20] Dick Dylan.

[00:28:20] Ew.

[00:28:21] You sent her a

[00:28:22] pick?

[00:28:22] No,

[00:28:23] that would be gross.

[00:28:24] He sent me pictures

[00:28:25] of Richards.

[00:28:27] That's worse.

[00:28:30] Tell me something

[00:28:30] just for me.

[00:28:31] First time I saw you

[00:28:32] Jed tried wrapping

[00:28:33] his arm around you.

[00:28:35] It was a good

[00:28:35] first impression.

[00:28:42] Caitlin was cute,

[00:28:43] airy,

[00:28:43] hardly a reason to

[00:28:44] pop like a zit.

[00:28:45] What happened?

[00:28:46] Caitlin exploded.

[00:28:47] What?

[00:28:47] Like a bomb?

[00:28:48] No,

[00:28:49] like a

[00:28:50] balloon.

[00:28:50] What?

[00:28:54] Will I get these back?

[00:28:55] Do you want these back?

[00:28:57] And the hell are they

[00:28:58] gonna let us out of here?

[00:28:59] When they know

[00:29:00] it's not gonna happen

[00:29:00] again.

[00:29:01] Then what's gonna happen

[00:29:02] again?

[00:29:05] It happened again

[00:29:06] a lot.

[00:29:10] Listen,

[00:29:10] everyone's scared.

[00:29:11] Duh.

[00:29:11] Duh.

[00:29:12] Kids are literally

[00:29:13] blowing up.

[00:29:15] I think they're

[00:29:16] doing tests on us.

[00:29:18] What's your name

[00:29:18] for the record,

[00:29:18] please?

[00:29:19] You asked my lawyer.

[00:29:21] I have a moment

[00:29:22] for you

[00:29:22] where I knew

[00:29:23] I liked you.

[00:29:23] You like me?

[00:29:25] I'm just

[00:29:26] so glad

[00:29:26] I didn't explode

[00:29:27] all over you.

[00:29:33] What's gonna happen

[00:29:34] to us?

[00:29:40] ET.

[00:29:42] Elliot.

[00:29:44] ET.

[00:29:50] Schools cancel.

[00:29:52] At least now

[00:29:52] you can't say things

[00:29:53] were so much

[00:29:54] harder back in my day.

[00:29:58] You're right.

[00:30:00] You have a way worse.

[00:30:02] All right.

[00:30:02] That was from the trailer

[00:30:03] for Spontaneous

[00:30:05] directed by

[00:30:05] Brian Duffield

[00:30:06] released in the year

[00:30:07] 2020.

[00:30:08] And honestly,

[00:30:09] I always like

[00:30:09] try to explain

[00:30:10] why I made Mike

[00:30:10] de-wash something

[00:30:11] and I try to ask him

[00:30:12] why he makes me

[00:30:12] watch stuff.

[00:30:13] I don't remember

[00:30:14] why I wanted to make

[00:30:15] you watch Spontaneous.

[00:30:17] Yeah,

[00:30:17] okay,

[00:30:17] fair.

[00:30:18] You know,

[00:30:18] I remember watching it.

[00:30:20] I liked it.

[00:30:20] I watched it back in 2020.

[00:30:22] I think it was one of those things

[00:30:23] where like

[00:30:24] I probably paid the full

[00:30:25] like $20 to rent it

[00:30:26] because back then

[00:30:27] it was just like,

[00:30:28] I don't know.

[00:30:28] There's no movies

[00:30:28] coming out.

[00:30:29] I got to what I got to

[00:30:30] pay $20 to watch

[00:30:31] Promise Young Woman.

[00:30:32] I got to do it.

[00:30:32] Yeah,

[00:30:33] what else am I going to do?

[00:30:35] So I think I paid,

[00:30:36] you know,

[00:30:36] the full amount

[00:30:37] to watch Spontaneous

[00:30:38] at the time

[00:30:39] and it was a movie

[00:30:40] that was like

[00:30:40] not really on my radar,

[00:30:42] but my girlfriend

[00:30:44] wanted to watch

[00:30:45] actually.

[00:30:46] And the reason was

[00:30:47] because Katherine

[00:30:47] Langford was in it

[00:30:49] who

[00:30:50] was the star of

[00:30:51] 13 Reasons Why

[00:30:52] on Netflix,

[00:30:54] but also she was the daughter

[00:30:55] in Knives Out.

[00:30:56] She was like

[00:30:58] her daughter in that movie

[00:30:59] or whatever.

[00:30:59] Yeah,

[00:31:00] that's right.

[00:31:00] I forgot about that.

[00:31:01] Yeah.

[00:31:01] So here's the thing

[00:31:02] when I

[00:31:03] was like,

[00:31:04] oh,

[00:31:04] you're doing a

[00:31:04] makes Mike watch

[00:31:05] like list

[00:31:07] going together.

[00:31:07] I was like,

[00:31:07] oh yeah,

[00:31:08] Spontaneous.

[00:31:09] Katherine Newton's in it.

[00:31:13] This is one of the big

[00:31:14] Katherine Newton rules

[00:31:15] that led to her rise

[00:31:16] and

[00:31:17] it's not.

[00:31:18] She

[00:31:19] not her.

[00:31:20] Not not Katherine Newton.

[00:31:21] Katherine Langford,

[00:31:22] who is also very good

[00:31:23] in this movie.

[00:31:23] I should say.

[00:31:24] Yes.

[00:31:26] Was it also maybe

[00:31:27] after I watched

[00:31:28] No One Will Save You

[00:31:28] and really like that

[00:31:29] that maybe we were like,

[00:31:30] oh, let's see what other

[00:31:31] deaf field stuff.

[00:31:32] Maybe that might have

[00:31:32] been it.

[00:31:33] Yeah,

[00:31:33] because I knew you were

[00:31:35] big underwater also,

[00:31:37] which I'm less big

[00:31:38] on underwater.

[00:31:38] I feel like I should

[00:31:39] get a fool.

[00:31:40] I know I should give

[00:31:41] them another shot.

[00:31:44] I saw underwater in

[00:31:45] theaters.

[00:31:45] That was like January

[00:31:46] 2020.

[00:31:47] It was like right before

[00:31:47] everything shut down

[00:31:48] and yeah,

[00:31:49] saw underwater.

[00:31:50] That was OK,

[00:31:51] but really enjoyed

[00:31:52] No One Will Save You

[00:31:52] last year,

[00:31:53] which is a very solid

[00:31:55] horror movie,

[00:31:56] horror action

[00:31:57] sort of thing

[00:31:57] with Caitlin Deaver.

[00:31:59] It's a silent film

[00:32:01] and yeah,

[00:32:01] a lot of fun

[00:32:01] and people haven't

[00:32:02] checked that one out.

[00:32:03] Go check it out.

[00:32:04] But yeah,

[00:32:04] spontaneous came out

[00:32:05] like during the height

[00:32:06] it was like November

[00:32:06] 2020.

[00:32:07] It was like,

[00:32:08] everything is still shut down.

[00:32:09] Nobody's going

[00:32:10] like technically stuff

[00:32:11] was open,

[00:32:11] but like we weren't

[00:32:12] going anywhere.

[00:32:13] At least I wasn't

[00:32:14] and yeah,

[00:32:15] spontaneous kind of

[00:32:16] came out at a weird time

[00:32:17] because when it was

[00:32:18] originally made,

[00:32:19] it was meant to be

[00:32:20] an allegory for

[00:32:21] mass shootings,

[00:32:22] right?

[00:32:22] That was the idea

[00:32:25] and then when it came out

[00:32:26] it was like,

[00:32:26] oh no,

[00:32:26] this is an

[00:32:27] allegory for

[00:32:27] COVID.

[00:32:30] Yeah,

[00:32:30] there's one scene

[00:32:31] in particular

[00:32:32] that is like,

[00:32:32] oh,

[00:32:33] that's what this

[00:32:33] movie is actually about.

[00:32:35] Yes.

[00:32:35] But yeah,

[00:32:36] I remember

[00:32:36] when this came out

[00:32:37] and I remember

[00:32:38] people like,

[00:32:38] got a lot of buzz,

[00:32:39] like people really

[00:32:39] liked it

[00:32:40] and stuff.

[00:32:40] Yeah.

[00:32:41] And

[00:32:42] that yeah,

[00:32:43] I was like,

[00:32:43] no,

[00:32:43] I wasn't,

[00:32:44] I didn't,

[00:32:44] how could I have known

[00:32:45] was sort of like

[00:32:46] Brian Duffield's

[00:32:47] like,

[00:32:48] you know,

[00:32:48] lying about like,

[00:32:49] oh,

[00:32:49] is this about COVID?

[00:32:50] He's like,

[00:32:51] no.

[00:32:55] But yeah,

[00:32:55] I don't know why

[00:32:55] I never got around to this.

[00:32:56] I feel like maybe

[00:32:57] just sort of the

[00:32:58] rom-com of it all

[00:32:59] and stuff.

[00:32:59] I was like,

[00:33:00] ah,

[00:33:00] yeah,

[00:33:00] I don't know.

[00:33:01] I like,

[00:33:01] you know,

[00:33:01] it's a very different lane

[00:33:03] than Underwater is.

[00:33:04] Sure.

[00:33:05] So I was like,

[00:33:05] maybe it's not for me,

[00:33:07] but it is for me.

[00:33:08] It definitely is.

[00:33:09] Spontaneous is great.

[00:33:09] It's so much fun.

[00:33:10] Asterisk,

[00:33:11] a fun asterisk,

[00:33:12] I guess.

[00:33:12] Sure,

[00:33:13] yeah.

[00:33:13] It's one of those kind of movies.

[00:33:14] Although it is

[00:33:15] definitely played for laughs.

[00:33:16] What's going on in the movie,

[00:33:17] but we haven't even really

[00:33:18] explained what the movie is about.

[00:33:20] That's true.

[00:33:20] So the idea of spontaneous

[00:33:22] and again,

[00:33:22] it's been a few years

[00:33:23] since I've watched it.

[00:33:24] You're obviously more fresh

[00:33:25] on it than I am

[00:33:26] because you just watched it.

[00:33:27] But from what I remember,

[00:33:28] it's sort of a love story

[00:33:29] between Katherine Langford

[00:33:30] and this guy played by Charlie Plummer.

[00:33:32] But while this love story

[00:33:34] is like kind of going on,

[00:33:35] kids are spontaneously

[00:33:37] combusting in their high school.

[00:33:39] Correct.

[00:33:40] And so every once in a while,

[00:33:41] somebody's head will just explode.

[00:33:43] Their whole body.

[00:33:44] Their whole body explodes.

[00:33:45] They're left like a looney tunes.

[00:33:47] This just like clothes

[00:33:50] and then blood everywhere.

[00:33:51] Right.

[00:33:52] So people are just suddenly

[00:33:54] spontaneously combusting.

[00:33:55] It's only happening

[00:33:56] in this high school.

[00:33:57] Like it's not happening.

[00:33:58] In this class,

[00:33:59] like just graduating class.

[00:34:00] Yeah.

[00:34:00] Right.

[00:34:00] And it's just them.

[00:34:02] And so they are navigating

[00:34:04] this horrifying thing

[00:34:06] that is happening

[00:34:08] to them and all of their friends.

[00:34:09] And they don't know

[00:34:10] if they could explode at any minutes.

[00:34:12] But at the same time,

[00:34:12] they're falling in love with each other.

[00:34:14] Right.

[00:34:14] Yes.

[00:34:15] Yeah. And they sort of fall in love

[00:34:16] because this is happening.

[00:34:18] It's sort of like,

[00:34:19] you know, the fragility

[00:34:22] of life gives

[00:34:23] Charlie Plummer's character

[00:34:24] the like,

[00:34:24] well, I might have died right now.

[00:34:26] So I better tell this person

[00:34:27] I've had a huge crush on them.

[00:34:28] Right.

[00:34:29] Sort of form this friendship

[00:34:30] that develops into a

[00:34:32] I was going to say,

[00:34:33] Katherine Newton.

[00:34:35] You've incepted me into thinking.

[00:34:36] I didn't mean to.

[00:34:38] You know, I think also part of it

[00:34:40] is that at the same time,

[00:34:41] Freaky had just come out

[00:34:42] and it was another one of those

[00:34:43] VOD COVID movies.

[00:34:45] That's right.

[00:34:45] Which I think is also a Duffield joint.

[00:34:47] Maybe.

[00:34:48] I don't think he directed it.

[00:34:49] He might have written it.

[00:34:49] That might have been the third movie

[00:34:50] that came out that year.

[00:34:51] That was him.

[00:34:52] Let me see.

[00:34:52] But he

[00:34:54] was like,

[00:34:55] oh yeah.

[00:34:55] So he like,

[00:34:55] that's what kind of inspires him

[00:34:57] to tell her character

[00:34:58] that he has a crush on her.

[00:34:59] Okay.

[00:35:00] So that,

[00:35:02] yeah,

[00:35:02] like they've got that going on,

[00:35:03] which is very fun.

[00:35:04] Was that right about Freaky?

[00:35:06] You're not right about Freaky.

[00:35:07] No, he the other movie

[00:35:08] that he had that year

[00:35:08] was Lovin' Monsters.

[00:35:10] Ah, okay.

[00:35:11] Yes.

[00:35:11] So there was that.

[00:35:12] I guess he'd also written

[00:35:13] The Babysitter on Netflix,

[00:35:15] the McG movies

[00:35:16] with Samara Weaving.

[00:35:18] And so that year,

[00:35:19] The Babysitter 2

[00:35:20] had just come out also.

[00:35:21] So he was all over the place.

[00:35:22] Yeah.

[00:35:22] He had a bunch of stuff going on.

[00:35:24] Yeah.

[00:35:24] And yeah,

[00:35:25] it's just fun.

[00:35:26] It's like,

[00:35:27] I feel like maybe

[00:35:28] the first 45 minutes

[00:35:30] or so were great.

[00:35:31] Like I was really enjoying

[00:35:32] the love story,

[00:35:35] romantic comedy stuff.

[00:35:36] I think the characters

[00:35:37] are all very fun.

[00:35:38] I think like the character

[00:35:39] Tish, I think,

[00:35:40] is like her best friend,

[00:35:41] is very great

[00:35:42] and their like

[00:35:43] trio relationship is very fun.

[00:35:45] And then you mix in the,

[00:35:47] you know,

[00:35:47] Monty Python level

[00:35:48] blood explosions

[00:35:49] that are happening

[00:35:50] every now and then.

[00:35:51] So that's very exciting

[00:35:52] and fun.

[00:35:52] And you know,

[00:35:54] it's played very seriously

[00:35:55] in the movie.

[00:35:55] Like it's played

[00:35:56] as if this was 100% real.

[00:35:58] Like as if

[00:35:58] these kids in class

[00:36:00] are just exploding.

[00:36:01] And like the...

[00:36:02] But like that's

[00:36:03] also an inherently silly

[00:36:05] concept.

[00:36:05] So like it's got that going.

[00:36:07] But there's a moment

[00:36:07] where they are like

[00:36:09] quarantined by the government

[00:36:11] for like testing

[00:36:12] and we're going to figure out

[00:36:13] this pill or something

[00:36:16] because it's like a curse

[00:36:16] and they're like maybe

[00:36:17] it's a bacteria

[00:36:19] or something.

[00:36:19] Yeah.

[00:36:19] And when it pivots into that stuff,

[00:36:21] it just like really slams

[00:36:22] on the brakes

[00:36:23] for the like rom-com stuff

[00:36:24] and was like,

[00:36:25] well, all right.

[00:36:25] That was having a lot more fun

[00:36:27] and that goes on

[00:36:27] for like 20 or 30 minutes.

[00:36:28] It's like a whole act of the movie.

[00:36:30] Right.

[00:36:31] It's like,

[00:36:31] oh,

[00:36:31] okay,

[00:36:32] I guess.

[00:36:32] But still overall,

[00:36:33] it's very good

[00:36:35] and yeah,

[00:36:36] it's fun.

[00:36:36] I think they're all like...

[00:36:37] It's sort of got like

[00:36:38] Diablo Cody-ish vibes

[00:36:40] to like just the way they all talk

[00:36:41] and all that kind of stuff.

[00:36:43] Sure.

[00:36:43] Yeah.

[00:36:43] It kind of has like a sort of

[00:36:44] flippant like kind of attitude,

[00:36:46] like a sarc...

[00:36:46] Like everybody's look a little bit sarcastic.

[00:36:48] Yeah,

[00:36:48] like post irony.

[00:36:49] Yeah,

[00:36:49] everyone is very sarcastic

[00:36:50] and stuff.

[00:36:51] So they're...

[00:36:51] That's fun.

[00:36:53] But then there's the one scene

[00:36:54] that's like,

[00:36:55] oh,

[00:36:55] this is what this movie is about

[00:36:58] where they've been...

[00:37:00] They come out of that testing facility,

[00:37:01] right?

[00:37:01] And a bunch of people have died

[00:37:02] while they're there

[00:37:04] and all this stuff.

[00:37:05] So it's like just the people

[00:37:05] that are left.

[00:37:06] They're back in school

[00:37:07] and I love that the drug

[00:37:09] they come up with

[00:37:09] is called the snooze button.

[00:37:11] That's what they call it.

[00:37:12] Right.

[00:37:12] Which is hilarious

[00:37:13] if you think like

[00:37:14] that you're just delaying it,

[00:37:15] you're not preventing

[00:37:17] the alarm from going off.

[00:37:18] You're just sneezing it.

[00:37:20] So that's great.

[00:37:20] But one kid

[00:37:23] explodes in class

[00:37:24] and triggers another kid

[00:37:27] to explode in class

[00:37:28] which triggers another kid.

[00:37:29] Right.

[00:37:29] And then they're like all screaming

[00:37:30] and running through the hallways

[00:37:31] as kids are behind them

[00:37:33] or exploding

[00:37:33] and you're like,

[00:37:34] oh, this is this is a school shooting.

[00:37:35] Like that's what's going on.

[00:37:36] Yeah,

[00:37:37] it's...

[00:37:37] And the whole movie is

[00:37:38] this whole concept

[00:37:39] is basically meant to be

[00:37:40] an allegory for that.

[00:37:41] Yeah,

[00:37:42] yeah,

[00:37:42] it's very intense

[00:37:43] and that's really where the movie

[00:37:44] kind of pivots away from the comedy,

[00:37:46] the calm part of Rom-Com

[00:37:49] particularly because

[00:37:50] Charlie Plummer's character

[00:37:51] explodes there

[00:37:52] at the end of that sequence.

[00:37:54] Right.

[00:37:54] Very intense

[00:37:55] and kind of ruins

[00:37:57] the other characters life.

[00:38:00] And then the last 20 minutes

[00:38:01] are sort of her

[00:38:02] trying to deal with that

[00:38:03] trauma and depression

[00:38:04] and what does that do to you?

[00:38:07] If the one person

[00:38:08] you ever loved so far

[00:38:09] because you're 18

[00:38:11] has exploded

[00:38:12] and all of your friends might explode

[00:38:13] and you might explode at any point

[00:38:14] but ultimately ends on a

[00:38:16] cheerful

[00:38:17] the power of life.

[00:38:19] Yeah,

[00:38:19] it's...

[00:38:20] It ultimately ends

[00:38:21] like this very like life-affirming

[00:38:22] like kind of montage

[00:38:23] with her kind of like

[00:38:24] having sort of future flash forwards,

[00:38:26] right?

[00:38:26] And talking about

[00:38:27] like staying at a beach house

[00:38:28] with her friend

[00:38:28] and all that kind of stuff

[00:38:30] and like just kind of doing

[00:38:31] exactly what she wants to do

[00:38:32] with her life

[00:38:32] because like,

[00:38:33] you know,

[00:38:33] what else are you going to do?

[00:38:34] And yeah,

[00:38:35] I remember finding that

[00:38:36] like ultimately pretty

[00:38:36] like uplifting and powerful.

[00:38:38] But yeah,

[00:38:38] I think the movie itself

[00:38:39] I really...

[00:38:40] I remember really enjoying it.

[00:38:41] Like it's a very fun time

[00:38:44] that does treat its subject matter

[00:38:45] like really seriously.

[00:38:47] Like I remember like feeling really like,

[00:38:48] you know,

[00:38:48] one of those things where like,

[00:38:49] you know,

[00:38:49] you're watching these kids explode

[00:38:51] and like for a minute

[00:38:51] you're like,

[00:38:52] ah,

[00:38:52] it's funny

[00:38:52] because it's a movie.

[00:38:53] But you're also watching

[00:38:55] like the parents grieve their children.

[00:38:57] Yes.

[00:38:57] And I remember that being like,

[00:38:59] man,

[00:38:59] this is hitting pretty hard actually.

[00:39:01] Yeah,

[00:39:01] her parents are Piper Paraboo

[00:39:04] and...

[00:39:05] Oh,

[00:39:05] I forgot the dad.

[00:39:06] Rob Hubel,

[00:39:06] I think,

[00:39:07] right?

[00:39:07] Yes.

[00:39:08] Yeah.

[00:39:08] Who's great

[00:39:09] and like they're both great

[00:39:11] in the few scenes that they are in.

[00:39:12] But yeah,

[00:39:13] it's...

[00:39:13] It plays it for laughs

[00:39:14] the few times that...

[00:39:16] What's the main character's name?

[00:39:17] Because I know you're looking at the wiki.

[00:39:18] Mara.

[00:39:19] Mara.

[00:39:19] Yes,

[00:39:19] thank you.

[00:39:20] Mara is like...

[00:39:21] keeps missing

[00:39:22] when somebody explodes.

[00:39:24] Like she never gets to see it

[00:39:25] the first couple of times.

[00:39:26] Like the beginning

[00:39:27] it's her

[00:39:27] and she's like

[00:39:28] pushing a pencil around on her desk

[00:39:29] and it falls over

[00:39:30] and she's like,

[00:39:31] oh God,

[00:39:32] and like she's so bored.

[00:39:33] Like oh my God.

[00:39:34] And she bends over to pick up the pencil

[00:39:35] and her...

[00:39:36] The girl in front of her explodes.

[00:39:37] And that happens a couple of times

[00:39:38] where she like

[00:39:39] will turn to do something

[00:39:40] and somebody behind her

[00:39:41] explodes now or whatever.

[00:39:42] And so it's like kind of played

[00:39:43] like as a...

[00:39:44] As like an off-screen gag

[00:39:45] until she sees it

[00:39:47] when it's like the drug dealers

[00:39:49] explode in the car

[00:39:50] with her in the car.

[00:39:52] And then like from there

[00:39:53] it's just like this is a...

[00:39:54] This is the worst thing that's ever happened.

[00:39:56] Like if it like really pivots

[00:39:57] I think in tone

[00:39:59] and that's also sort of

[00:40:00] when they get kidnapped by...

[00:40:01] Or you know,

[00:40:01] quarantined or whatever

[00:40:02] by the government

[00:40:03] is around there.

[00:40:04] Right.

[00:40:04] And that...

[00:40:05] I remember being like

[00:40:06] you know,

[00:40:06] watching this

[00:40:07] in November 2020

[00:40:09] or whatever.

[00:40:10] That whole quarantine thing

[00:40:11] just like really was like,

[00:40:12] huh,

[00:40:12] it's uncomfortably close to...

[00:40:14] Yikes.

[00:40:16] Because they do...

[00:40:16] They do kind of think of it

[00:40:17] as like a virus

[00:40:19] that is like being able to spread

[00:40:20] to people with this thing.

[00:40:21] So they don't want this

[00:40:22] you know,

[00:40:23] head...

[00:40:23] The exploding sickness

[00:40:25] to spread beyond this high school.

[00:40:28] Right.

[00:40:28] And yeah,

[00:40:29] they even like

[00:40:30] address Trump.

[00:40:31] They like name-check Trump

[00:40:32] towards the end

[00:40:33] in the end in that montage

[00:40:35] where she's like

[00:40:35] fuck that,

[00:40:36] I'm going to become president.

[00:40:37] And it's her like swearing in on a button.

[00:40:38] She like turns and says something

[00:40:39] like fuck you President Trump

[00:40:41] or whatever.

[00:40:41] I forget what she says.

[00:40:42] And so that's like

[00:40:43] I could imagine in 2020

[00:40:45] being like,

[00:40:45] eh,

[00:40:46] I can see how that would play.

[00:40:48] Then

[00:40:50] what's...

[00:40:50] What was the other thing

[00:40:51] that I thought of that

[00:40:53] about?

[00:40:53] I can't remember right now

[00:40:54] at the top of my head.

[00:40:55] But there's another thing

[00:40:56] that I was like,

[00:40:56] oh man,

[00:40:57] in November

[00:40:57] this would have been in 2020.

[00:40:59] That's the thing.

[00:40:59] So it's a movie that like

[00:41:00] really felt like...

[00:41:01] Like when you're watching it

[00:41:02] you're like,

[00:41:02] okay,

[00:41:02] this is very obviously

[00:41:03] you know,

[00:41:04] an allegory for school shooting.

[00:41:05] It's like it's an...

[00:41:05] It's an allegory for that.

[00:41:07] But because of when it was released,

[00:41:09] like they couldn't have predicted this

[00:41:10] like when making the movie,

[00:41:12] but it ended up being

[00:41:13] like an accidental

[00:41:14] allegory for COVID.

[00:41:15] Exactly.

[00:41:16] Which happened with

[00:41:17] a lot of movies that year

[00:41:18] it felt like.

[00:41:19] I think it's just unavoidable.

[00:41:20] Yeah.

[00:41:21] Yeah, true.

[00:41:22] But like my favorite movie

[00:41:23] of that year of 2020

[00:41:24] was She Dies Tomorrow.

[00:41:25] Right.

[00:41:26] Which have you seen

[00:41:26] She Dies Tomorrow?

[00:41:27] Did you ever watch it?

[00:41:28] I did, yeah.

[00:41:28] Yeah.

[00:41:29] And that movie is about

[00:41:30] somebody who knows

[00:41:31] they're about to die

[00:41:32] and every time they like

[00:41:34] meet with someone

[00:41:35] or they

[00:41:36] they spread that to the next person.

[00:41:38] Right.

[00:41:38] And so everybody like

[00:41:39] is about to die the next day

[00:41:40] who comes into contact with you.

[00:41:42] And yeah,

[00:41:43] it was one of those things like

[00:41:44] oh this is really

[00:41:45] hitting hard right now.

[00:41:46] Yeah.

[00:41:47] This very specific concept

[00:41:48] is hitting very hard

[00:41:49] in the year 2020.

[00:41:50] Why is that?

[00:41:51] Interesting.

[00:41:52] No actually the thing I

[00:41:53] the thing I was going to

[00:41:54] talk about actually

[00:41:55] has nothing to do with this

[00:41:56] which is why I was confused.

[00:41:57] But back to Planet of the Apes.

[00:41:59] Back to Planet of the Apes.

[00:42:00] So in War for the Planet of the Apes

[00:42:03] they see graffiti that says

[00:42:04] Apepocalypse Now.

[00:42:06] You're actually talking

[00:42:07] talking about Planet of the Apes.

[00:42:09] Only because that specific

[00:42:10] image has not left my brain

[00:42:11] since I watched

[00:42:12] War for the Planet of the Apes.

[00:42:12] But yeah in Spontaneous

[00:42:14] they

[00:42:16] the first act also

[00:42:18] like once the

[00:42:20] the romance stuff has started

[00:42:22] they start like

[00:42:22] direct addressing the camera.

[00:42:24] Do you remember that?

[00:42:25] They like she asked him like

[00:42:26] well when did you have a

[00:42:27] when did you first realize

[00:42:28] you have a crush on me?

[00:42:29] And he's like well it all

[00:42:30] like a noir character

[00:42:31] he like turns to the camera

[00:42:32] he's like well it all started

[00:42:33] in first freshman year

[00:42:34] and then it's them like

[00:42:35] walking across screen

[00:42:36] talking about like

[00:42:37] and they're just like

[00:42:38] sometimes pushing the cameraman

[00:42:40] like I don't know

[00:42:41] it's very interesting

[00:42:42] it's very weird.

[00:42:42] Yeah.

[00:42:43] Interesting.

[00:42:44] Yeah very you know

[00:42:45] brave filmmaking I guess.

[00:42:47] Yeah absolutely

[00:42:48] and speaking of

[00:42:49] accidental COVID allegories

[00:42:51] the Planet of the Apes movies

[00:42:54] they got the bright eyes

[00:42:55] that now what do they call it

[00:42:56] I forget the simian flu

[00:42:58] the simian flu

[00:42:58] yeah the the Alzheimer's drug

[00:43:00] that accidentally kills people.

[00:43:02] Yeah.

[00:43:03] I always knew James Franco

[00:43:04] would somehow be involved

[00:43:05] in the downfall of humanity

[00:43:07] just felt right.

[00:43:08] It does.

[00:43:09] But yeah it was

[00:43:10] funny watching

[00:43:11] Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

[00:43:11] last night my girlfriend

[00:43:12] was in the room with me

[00:43:13] like as it started

[00:43:14] and that movie starts with

[00:43:15] like this montage

[00:43:17] of you know

[00:43:18] you're watching the downfall

[00:43:19] of humanity through like

[00:43:20] sound clips and video clips

[00:43:22] and you're seeing like

[00:43:23] the lines go

[00:43:23] and the virus spreading

[00:43:24] across the map

[00:43:26] and it's like oh man

[00:43:27] it's different

[00:43:28] a few years later.

[00:43:30] Absolutely.

[00:43:31] I remember we were

[00:43:32] when I was watching

[00:43:34] Dawn.

[00:43:35] Is that first?

[00:43:35] That's the first one

[00:43:36] Rise is the first one

[00:43:37] God damn it

[00:43:37] we've already been through this Mike

[00:43:39] but that ends with the

[00:43:40] pilot with the bloody nose

[00:43:41] getting on the plane

[00:43:42] yeah and me and my friends

[00:43:43] were watching it in 2023

[00:43:45] being like just stay home from work

[00:43:47] no call out

[00:43:52] We didn't know in 2013

[00:43:54] or whatever

[00:43:54] yeah that was 2011

[00:43:56] but 2011

[00:43:57] yeah and Dawn was 2014

[00:43:58] and yeah 10 years later

[00:44:00] hits hard

[00:44:01] in any case any last thoughts

[00:44:02] about spontaneous Mike

[00:44:03] before we wrap this up

[00:44:04] I think yeah

[00:44:05] I think it's really great

[00:44:06] I think maybe it falters

[00:44:07] in the middle like I was saying

[00:44:08] but but overall

[00:44:09] it's still really strong

[00:44:10] and life-affirming

[00:44:11] and funny

[00:44:13] so check it out

[00:44:13] and yeah I'm pretty in the bag

[00:44:15] for Duffield stuff

[00:44:16] for now I don't know

[00:44:16] I mean he's

[00:44:17] it's you know

[00:44:18] I don't know if he's directed

[00:44:19] a ton of stuff outside

[00:44:20] of this and never

[00:44:21] no one will save you

[00:44:22] no one will save you

[00:44:23] yeah I think those are the only

[00:44:24] two movies he's directed

[00:44:25] I guess he was also involved

[00:44:26] with a Skull Island

[00:44:28] like Kong animated show

[00:44:29] on Netflix

[00:44:31] right yeah

[00:44:31] yes

[00:44:32] so yeah I was involved with that

[00:44:33] it looks like he produced

[00:44:34] Cocaine Bear

[00:44:36] cool

[00:44:36] but yeah

[00:44:37] hasn't done anything since

[00:44:38] but I mean

[00:44:39] no one will save you

[00:44:39] just came out like at the end

[00:44:40] of last year or so

[00:44:41] yeah it's like six months ago

[00:44:43] it's like what have you done for me lately

[00:44:44] Ryan Duffield come on

[00:44:47] yeah

[00:44:47] so I think

[00:44:48] I think we had a pretty successful

[00:44:49] Mike Makes Mike Watch

[00:44:50] this week

[00:44:50] yeah absolutely

[00:44:51] what's the one for next month

[00:44:53] what's

[00:44:53] what's the June Mike Makes Mike Watch

[00:44:55] oh boy I think we start getting

[00:44:56] into like blockbuster-y stuff

[00:44:58] oh interesting

[00:44:59] is that how you approached it

[00:45:00] yeah I was like summer

[00:45:01] summer

[00:45:02] summertime

[00:45:02] we got to start doing that stuff

[00:45:04] oh baby you ready for

[00:45:05] back-to-back

[00:45:06] Stray Theron joints

[00:45:07] ooh what do we got

[00:45:08] we got the River Wild

[00:45:09] okay

[00:45:11] with Meryl Streep

[00:45:12] David Stray Theron

[00:45:13] and the kid from

[00:45:15] Jurassic Park

[00:45:16] John C. Reilly

[00:45:16] Kevin Bacon

[00:45:17] very nice very nice

[00:45:19] Benjamin Bratt's in there

[00:45:21] we got everything

[00:45:22] all right awesome

[00:45:23] so the River Wild

[00:45:24] is the movie you're going to make me watch

[00:45:25] the next Mike Makes Mike Watch

[00:45:27] and I am looking right now

[00:45:29] here we go

[00:45:29] what's the pick for June

[00:45:31] oh I'm making you watch

[00:45:34] Barb and Star go to Vista del Mar

[00:45:37] yeah that tracks

[00:45:38] yeah two summer vacation movies

[00:45:40] yes yeah there you go

[00:45:42] and also

[00:45:43] that's a movie that

[00:45:44] I think came out in like February

[00:45:45] 2021

[00:45:46] it was before I was going back to theaters

[00:45:47] and another one that I watched

[00:45:49] at home during the pandemic

[00:45:50] but I recently rewatched

[00:45:52] in a theater

[00:45:53] in a sold-out theater

[00:45:54] wow

[00:45:54] and man that movie hits

[00:45:56] it's so good

[00:45:56] it's so fun

[00:45:57] I think you'll enjoy it

[00:45:58] you should watch it with your discord friends

[00:45:59] you get some people to

[00:46:00] laugh at it and stuff

[00:46:02] but yeah

[00:46:02] it's a good time

[00:46:03] if you're a fan of the Austin Powers films

[00:46:05] it's very much in that vein

[00:46:07] excellent

[00:46:07] yeah I was

[00:46:08] didn't watch this when it came out

[00:46:10] but I remember thinking

[00:46:11] how much of this is just that

[00:46:13] it's February 2021

[00:46:14] and there hasn't been a new movie

[00:46:15] and people are just excited

[00:46:17] for films

[00:46:18] but I'm glad to hear that

[00:46:20] it

[00:46:21] transcends that

[00:46:22] it's so good

[00:46:23] I mean the

[00:46:24] the screening at the Roxy

[00:46:25] when we did it for

[00:46:26] with that sold-out screening

[00:46:27] was incredible

[00:46:28] and I think you know

[00:46:29] in everybody's case

[00:46:30] like if they had seen the movie

[00:46:32] it was not in the theater

[00:46:33] because of when it came out

[00:46:35] and it was originally supposed to be

[00:46:36] a theatrical release

[00:46:37] I don't think they ever actually got one

[00:46:38] because it just went straight to VOD

[00:46:39] or whatever

[00:46:40] but yeah

[00:46:40] it's great

[00:46:41] Barbistar

[00:46:41] so that's that's next month

[00:46:42] so the River Wild

[00:46:43] and Barbistar

[00:46:44] Go To Visa Del Mar

[00:46:45] will be the next

[00:46:46] Mike Makes Mike Watch

[00:46:47] and other bonus episodes

[00:46:49] of the podcast coming up

[00:46:50] probably a Furiosa review

[00:46:51] I would imagine

[00:46:52] yeah

[00:46:53] coming out pretty soon

[00:46:54] and then I also just recently

[00:46:55] talked to Charlie McCorn

[00:46:57] who I think is

[00:46:58] down to be a guest

[00:46:59] on the podcast soon

[00:47:00] to talk about the upcoming

[00:47:01] Queer West Film Festival at the Roxy

[00:47:03] Excellent

[00:47:03] How funny would it be

[00:47:04] if we don't do a Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes review?

[00:47:08] I mean

[00:47:08] now I feel like we've almost like

[00:47:09] backed ourselves into one

[00:47:11] Yeah, I guess so

[00:47:12] Maybe we should do one

[00:47:13] That is something to consider

[00:47:16] So anyway

[00:47:17] War for the Planet of the Apes

[00:47:18] You know

[00:47:18] here's the thing

[00:47:19] We've been trying to like

[00:47:20] scale back the podcast a little bit

[00:47:23] but suddenly I'm like

[00:47:24] but we have so many ideas

[00:47:25] for bonus episodes

[00:47:27] My God

[00:47:27] Now that we don't have to do them

[00:47:28] we're overflowing with ideas

[00:47:33] So yeah

[00:47:33] bonus episodes of the podcast

[00:47:35] coming out soon

[00:47:36] with potentially

[00:47:37] Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

[00:47:39] Furiosa

[00:47:40] I mean

[00:47:40] we really should have done like

[00:47:41] an apestrospective

[00:47:43] episode, right?

[00:47:44] We probably should have

[00:47:45] but it's too late now

[00:47:46] We just did one

[00:47:46] We just did 30 minutes

[00:47:47] We kind of just did

[00:47:50] and you're like

[00:47:50] we also talked with these movies

[00:47:52] a few months ago too

[00:47:53] like

[00:47:54] Yeah, we did

[00:47:55] We absolutely did

[00:47:57] So yeah

[00:47:57] potentially

[00:47:58] Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

[00:47:59] We're calling it right now

[00:48:01] and Furiosa

[00:48:02] and all that good stuff

[00:48:02] But yeah

[00:48:03] otherwise

[00:48:03] I should get back to my papers

[00:48:05] so I can say what the

[00:48:06] What are the words?

[00:48:07] Yeah, what are the words?

[00:48:08] These are the words

[00:48:09] Mike, where can I find you online this week?
