BONUS - Star Trek: First Contact

Mike and Mike episodes are moving over to The Complete Works feed! And this week, we're celebrating April 5th, 2063 (the day humankind first made contact with the Vulcans) as we talk about STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT!

[00:00:00] Let's get together talk about the movies that we saw this week

[00:00:04] We'll have discussions, talk film news, we'll laugh a lot and act like geeks

[00:00:07] Sometimes we'll have a guest or two, sometimes it's just the two of us

[00:00:09] I'll smack some jokes and tell some folks to come along and hang with us

[00:00:12] Spy can't buy go to the movies

[00:00:17] Spy can't buy go to the movies

[00:00:22] Yeah!

[00:00:25] You have chosen wisely

[00:00:28] No! No! I will not sacrifice the podcast

[00:00:32] We've made too many compromises already, too many retreats

[00:00:35] They invade our space and we fall back

[00:00:37] They assimilate entire worlds and we fall back

[00:00:40] Not again, the line must be drawn here

[00:00:43] This far, no further

[00:00:45] And I will make them listen to Mike and Mike go to the movie

[00:00:51] I think it would have been better if it ended with a plug for our podcast

[00:00:54] I think you're right

[00:00:55] Yeah, I think so too

[00:00:56] We're simulating Jean-Luc Picard's dialogue into a plug for Mike and Mike go to the movies

[00:01:03] Was that an okay Picard? Did you feel like Patrick Stewart was in the room with you right now?

[00:01:06] He was right, yeah, just move through you

[00:01:09] Yes, I'm Mike Smith and Joining Me As Always is a man beginning to see the metaphor between himself and Katanaehab

[00:01:16] I'm like D'Crucian

[00:01:17] How do you do Mike?

[00:01:18] I'm doing great

[00:01:20] I think it's funny that even in the year 2065 or the 24th century or whatever

[00:01:25] I guess Picard is for the 24th century

[00:01:28] Even then people wouldn't really remember

[00:01:31] Still don't really remember Moviedick

[00:01:34] They got the basic gist of it but then I think one of them is like, oh yeah, you know, I get it but I haven't read it

[00:01:40] That's how I got a master's degree, it's like yeah, I basically got it

[00:01:43] Yeah, you got the spark notes, you got the whole thing

[00:01:46] Yeah, what's been going on in the life of Mike's Cree show?

[00:01:49] Not a whole lot

[00:01:50] Computer stuff like I was talking about last week that got delivered today

[00:01:54] So we're gonna be building a new PC

[00:01:56] That's very exciting but also scary

[00:01:58] Yeah

[00:01:59] Because what if break?

[00:02:00] You know

[00:02:01] Sure

[00:02:02] What if break?

[00:02:02] What if break?

[00:02:03] That is something you have to ask yourself

[00:02:05] I hope it doesn't because we had to record podcasts

[00:02:07] We got a podcast, maybe the show must go on

[00:02:09] Exactly, yeah, you're gonna be recording on a tin can for the next few episodes

[00:02:15] I'll have to bust out my laptop that can barely work

[00:02:18] Remember those days, Mike?

[00:02:20] Yes, yeah, I do remember that actually, yeah

[00:02:22] Because that was the reason you got the PC was because it like was basically non-functional, right?

[00:02:27] Like it just shut down one thing

[00:02:28] Yeah, it basically wouldn't hold a Wi-Fi connection

[00:02:31] Right

[00:02:31] It's just like wouldn't connect at all anymore

[00:02:34] Or it would go up and down

[00:02:36] I'd watch the bar go three bars, one bar, three bars, one bar

[00:02:39] Which is real hard to record a podcast on

[00:02:41] Yes, that does make it difficult

[00:02:43] And I had to do the same thing a few years ago

[00:02:45] And yeah, I've got my, I mean, I have a laptop, I didn't build a PC

[00:02:49] I'm not a genius like you, Mike

[00:02:52] Few people are

[00:02:56] Yeah, so far my laptop's still working, which is nice

[00:02:58] That's good

[00:02:59] That was a harrowing expense when I had to buy a new laptop

[00:03:04] But yeah, there it is

[00:03:05] So we are gonna be talking about Star Trek First Contact today, Mike

[00:03:08] Which goddamn right we are

[00:03:10] Yes, and we're gonna get to that in just a few minutes

[00:03:13] But first, I think we have to make an announcement

[00:03:15] Yes

[00:03:16] On this episode of the podcast

[00:03:17] And you know, it's a, you know, somewhat sad news

[00:03:21] I guess if you're a fan of Mike, you might go to the movies

[00:03:23] But I think it's ultimately better for the both of us

[00:03:25] Yes

[00:03:26] That's good, right?

[00:03:27] That's a plus

[00:03:28] That is a huge pro personally for the two of us

[00:03:32] Yes

[00:03:33] So Mike and I have been talking about the state of the podcast

[00:03:37] Over the last few months

[00:03:38] And we've recently been recording the complete works

[00:03:40] The Roy Scheider season

[00:03:42] Which is gonna start publishing in like a month or so

[00:03:45] Maybe we're, you know, we're not putting the firm date on that quite yet

[00:03:48] But, you know, we've both been feeling maybe a little bit burned out

[00:03:52] Yes

[00:03:53] By doing two podcasts every single week

[00:03:55] For years now

[00:03:56] For years

[00:03:57] Yes

[00:03:58] I mean, we've been doing these podcasts since 2015

[00:04:00] We've been doing them for nine years

[00:04:02] That's crazy

[00:04:02] That's insane

[00:04:03] Yeah

[00:04:04] For a podcast with numbers like ours, we shouldn't be doing

[00:04:08] It felt like in 2015 it was like, man, podcast is so crowded

[00:04:13] And it's been nine years since then

[00:04:16] Now there's more podcasts if you can believe

[00:04:19] Yes

[00:04:20] And we're not ending

[00:04:21] I guess we should say that now

[00:04:22] It's not over

[00:04:23] Exactly

[00:04:23] Because the preamble we just did

[00:04:25] If I was a listener, I would think we're about to end the show

[00:04:27] But we're not ending the show

[00:04:28] No, we're not ending the show

[00:04:30] But we are downsizing it a little bit

[00:04:32] Yes

[00:04:33] So we've decided to, you know, make the complete works our flagship show

[00:04:37] Like that's going to be the show that, you know, we'll have a new episode every week

[00:04:40] All that kind of stuff

[00:04:41] Mike and Mike Go to the Movies is going to go down to once every other week

[00:04:45] So every two weeks

[00:04:46] Yes

[00:04:47] We'll still have a new episode of Mike and Mike Go to the Movies

[00:04:49] But we're not going to be publishing the episodes on this feed

[00:04:53] For that much longer

[00:04:54] If you're only subscribed to Mike and Mike Go to the Movies

[00:04:56] You will eventually run out of episode

[00:04:58] Yes

[00:04:59] It will end eventually

[00:05:00] So instead what we're going to be doing is basically releasing Mike and Mike Go to the Movies

[00:05:04] Every other week as a bonus episode to the complete works

[00:05:08] So if you want to continue listening to Mike and Mike Go to the Movies

[00:05:11] If you're not already subscribed to the complete works

[00:05:14] You should subscribe over there

[00:05:15] Because then you'll still be able to get all your fun Mike and Mike action

[00:05:19] That you love so very much

[00:05:20] Correct

[00:05:20] Yeah, we're going to keep doing all the same episode types

[00:05:23] You know, discussions

[00:05:24] Mike makes Mike watch

[00:05:26] Guest makes us watch

[00:05:28] Paid for episodes

[00:05:29] All the usual stuff

[00:05:31] Yeah, exactly

[00:05:32] But we're just going to downsize

[00:05:33] Yeah, Paid for episodes

[00:05:34] Mike makes Mike watch

[00:05:35] We'll still be doing one of those a month

[00:05:36] And we'll be doing discussions

[00:05:37] All that stuff

[00:05:37] And we'll still do

[00:05:39] You know, your Oscars recap

[00:05:41] Your top 10 episode at the end of the year

[00:05:43] You know, there are annual in person episode

[00:05:46] Where we all pick a movie to watch

[00:05:47] And talk about it

[00:05:48] You know, all the staples of the podcast will still be intact

[00:05:52] There will just be less of this podcast

[00:05:55] Because it's becoming kind of taxing

[00:05:58] To do both

[00:05:59] It is a lot for the 25 of you that listen

[00:06:02] Yes

[00:06:03] Which we appreciate a lot

[00:06:05] Thank you very much

[00:06:06] Yeah, we love it

[00:06:06] We appreciate it

[00:06:08] If you are able to

[00:06:09] We'd love a donation

[00:06:10] That'd be great

[00:06:11] That'd be great

[00:06:12] But yeah

[00:06:13] So unfortunately

[00:06:14] We kind of, you know, we kind of came to this decision

[00:06:16] I don't think we're like too broken up about it

[00:06:18] You know, I think it's something that, you know

[00:06:20] Because the podcast is still going on

[00:06:21] You know, it's still continuing

[00:06:22] You'll still hear the Mike and Mike theme

[00:06:24] On those bonus episodes

[00:06:25] Like it's basically going to be

[00:06:26] In its exact same form

[00:06:28] It'll just be in a different place

[00:06:29] Every other week

[00:06:30] Instead of every week

[00:06:31] Correct

[00:06:32] Yeah, and I'm already picturing excited about

[00:06:34] You know, we have our

[00:06:35] We'll have our two standard episodes

[00:06:37] And then us being like

[00:06:37] We gotta talk about whatever

[00:06:39] And we'll do an extra one

[00:06:40] Or what, you know

[00:06:41] Just it'll be nice to not be committed

[00:06:42] To having to do two podcasts every week

[00:06:45] Yeah

[00:06:45] Forever

[00:06:48] Exactly

[00:06:48] Yeah, it's a lot

[00:06:49] It's a lot of recording

[00:06:50] It's a lot of editing

[00:06:51] You know, I edit the complete works

[00:06:52] Pretty much by myself

[00:06:53] But Kyle Cullen

[00:06:55] Who is our music supervisor

[00:06:56] Slash editor for Mike and Mike Go To The Movies

[00:06:58] And I feel like we never give him enough credit

[00:07:00] For editing this podcast

[00:07:01] We always just call him the music supervisor

[00:07:03] He's been editing Mike Go To The Movies

[00:07:05] For the last couple of years now at this point

[00:07:07] Since the pandemic, at least, yeah

[00:07:09] And he's been great about having like a fast turnaround

[00:07:12] Because we record him on Tuesdays

[00:07:13] And we've been publishing on Thursdays

[00:07:15] But you know, in that time

[00:07:17] He's had children

[00:07:18] And it's the kind of more

[00:07:20] Twins, he has two kids

[00:07:22] That's crazy

[00:07:23] Kyle, if you're listening to this

[00:07:24] Great job, man

[00:07:25] I mean, I think he has to listen to this

[00:07:27] I think he has to

[00:07:28] Unless he's been pretending to edit the podcast

[00:07:30] All these years

[00:07:31] I never listened to that

[00:07:32] I wouldn't know

[00:07:35] He's just been putting out nothing but fart noises

[00:07:37] And that's why we have

[00:07:39] 20 people, 25 people

[00:07:41] Exactly

[00:07:42] But yeah, so we want to give a shout out to Kyle

[00:07:45] Because yeah, give him a lot of credit for

[00:07:47] Editing the podcast over the last few years

[00:07:49] But yeah, it's also becoming

[00:07:51] You know, more of a thing for him

[00:07:52] He has kids now

[00:07:53] And so I think

[00:07:54] Having one every other week

[00:07:56] Will help us with kind of that

[00:07:57] That flow of episodes and all that kind of stuff

[00:07:59] So that's what's going on

[00:08:01] We are downsizing Mike and Mike Go to the movies

[00:08:03] And we're gonna stop publishing episodes

[00:08:05] On this Mike and Mike feed

[00:08:06] Pretty soon

[00:08:07] Basically once

[00:08:08] The complete work starts

[00:08:10] Like the new season of the complete work starts

[00:08:12] That's when we're gonna stop publishing episodes over here

[00:08:14] And that's when we'll make the transition to

[00:08:15] Like one every two weeks

[00:08:17] So in the meantime

[00:08:18] We're gonna be publishing these episodes on both feeds

[00:08:21] Starting with this episode

[00:08:22] So that'll make the transition a little bit easier for you

[00:08:24] If you wanna just jump over to the complete works

[00:08:27] And subscribe over there

[00:08:28] Because right now the complete works feed is empty

[00:08:31] We haven't been publishing anything

[00:08:32] Because we've been recording Roy Shider stuff

[00:08:34] Right, yeah, we're in

[00:08:35] I was gonna say pre-production

[00:08:37] But we're in the recording phase

[00:08:39] We wanna have a couple episodes in the bank

[00:08:40] Ready to go

[00:08:41] Before we start releasing them

[00:08:43] Just in case

[00:08:44] Scheduling things

[00:08:44] Or just to have some lead time

[00:08:47] Because we are usually flying by the seat of our pants

[00:08:49] And that's been part of the problem

[00:08:51] It's like, hey, we have two days for this thing to be finished

[00:08:53] Yeah, exactly

[00:08:54] So we're gonna be working on that

[00:08:55] Yeah, it'll be cool to start publishing them on both, I think

[00:08:57] And then we'll have more specific dates as we get closer

[00:09:01] But in the next month or two

[00:09:03] We'll transition to bi-weekly for Mike and Mike

[00:09:05] And then complete works every week

[00:09:07] Yeah, absolutely

[00:09:08] And plus complete works

[00:09:09] I mean, we might have a bonus episode of complete works here and there

[00:09:11] Over the next couple of months

[00:09:12] Because Nikage's new horror movie out

[00:09:14] Arcadian

[00:09:15] Two horror movies coming out this year, right?

[00:09:17] Yes, but that one's Long Legs in July

[00:09:19] Arcadian, I believe, is out in select theaters now

[00:09:22] Or it's gonna be very soon

[00:09:23] Right

[00:09:24] And then there's also, they shot the piano player

[00:09:26] The new Jeff Goldblum pseudo documentary animated thing

[00:09:30] Which I know has played certain theaters

[00:09:32] But it's not available on video on demand yet

[00:09:34] So we can't watch it yet

[00:09:35] Right

[00:09:36] And when's Wicked coming out?

[00:09:37] Which is both of Michelle Yellen, Jeff Goldblum?

[00:09:39] That's end of the year

[00:09:40] We got some time for that one

[00:09:41] That's, I believe, Thanksgiving or Christmas

[00:09:44] Or something like that

[00:09:44] I guess I could have seen that, Kevin

[00:09:46] Yeah, we gotta wait until that one

[00:09:47] That might have to be our end of year in-person episode

[00:09:50] There's not that many big movies coming out

[00:09:53] At the end of the year right now

[00:09:54] It's like that or Nosferatu

[00:09:56] Which, I mean, that would be cool too

[00:09:57] That would be great

[00:09:59] But yeah, we're getting ahead of ourselves there

[00:10:01] That might be a little while till we get to that

[00:10:04] But yeah, so there you go

[00:10:05] To recap, Mike and Mike go to the movies

[00:10:07] Downsizing to bi-weekly episodes

[00:10:10] And the episodes are gonna be moving on to

[00:10:12] The complete works feed in the near future

[00:10:14] So if you're not subscribed over there, get subscribed

[00:10:17] And with that, we can move on into the main subject

[00:10:20] Of the episode, Mike

[00:10:22] We got a donation, a $50 donation to our Kofi page

[00:10:26] Which you can still do

[00:10:28] Anybody can donate $50 to our Kofi page

[00:10:31] If there's one thing we're not doing

[00:10:34] Turning off the Kofi page

[00:10:37] You can donate $50 to our Kofi page

[00:10:39] And if you do, we will record an episode

[00:10:42] About anything you want, essentially

[00:10:45] Within reason, I guess we should say

[00:10:47] Yeah, asterisk mostly

[00:10:49] Yeah, mostly

[00:10:50] If we turn it down, I guess we can refund your money

[00:10:52] Maybe or something, I don't know how Kofi works

[00:10:54] Or we'll just tell you to pick something else

[00:10:57] That could work too

[00:10:59] But we got a donation, $50 from, I believe, David

[00:11:03] Right, Mike? Yes, yes

[00:11:04] Friend of the pod, David

[00:11:05] Thank you, David

[00:11:06] Friend of the pod, David

[00:11:07] Who I believe also made us watch

[00:11:08] The Dungeons and Dragons movies last year

[00:11:11] Correct

[00:11:11] Okay, so yeah, he donated last year

[00:11:14] And made us watch two D&D movies

[00:11:16] He made us watch the 2000 Dungeons and Dragons

[00:11:19] And the new Dungeons and Dragons

[00:11:21] Among the Thieves

[00:11:22] This time around, David is making us watch

[00:11:24] Star Trek First Contact

[00:11:27] Now, David is not the one who made us watch

[00:11:28] Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan

[00:11:30] A few months ago, I believe

[00:11:31] Was that Jake?

[00:11:32] That might have been Jake

[00:11:33] I think that was Jake

[00:11:34] I don't remember all this off my head actually

[00:11:35] I'm pretty sure it was Jake

[00:11:36] That made us watch Star Trek II

[00:11:37] If not, I mean, Jake is listening

[00:11:39] I know he's like one of the people

[00:11:40] I know listens to pretty much every episode

[00:11:42] And I know he's listening to Star Trek First Contact

[00:11:45] So if it wasn't you, Jake, I'm sorry

[00:11:48] I apologize for misattributing Star Trek II to you

[00:11:50] I know he made us watch Freddy Got Fingered

[00:11:52] That was a Jake thing for sure

[00:11:53] Which is now on the Criterion channel

[00:11:55] Incredible, where it belongs?

[00:11:57] Yeah, question my question

[00:12:00] I just remember by the end of that episode

[00:12:03] We had talked ourselves into Freddy Got Fingered

[00:12:05] Being a masterpiece

[00:12:08] We started off hating that movie

[00:12:09] Every time we got to the end

[00:12:11] Yeah, I don't know if I hated it to start off with

[00:12:13] But I was very much like, yeah, it's okay

[00:12:15] You know, there's some segments

[00:12:16] That I thought were kind of funny

[00:12:18] But like, I was watching it like one in the afternoon

[00:12:20] By myself

[00:12:21] It wasn't the best

[00:12:22] I needed a group of stone friends to be around

[00:12:24] To really appreciate Freddy Got Fingered

[00:12:26] And apparently the Criterion feels the same

[00:12:28] Yes

[00:12:29] I mean, that's part of their like, their Razzies list

[00:12:32] Like their category

[00:12:33] Which is a great idea for a series

[00:12:35] Just all the like, the best movies that the Razzies

[00:12:37] Like gave worst picture to or something

[00:12:39] So it's Freddy Got Fingered

[00:12:40] It's Showgirls

[00:12:41] It's Under the Cherry Moon

[00:12:43] It's a bunch of

[00:12:44] Cruising stuff in there

[00:12:45] Yeah, cruising, which rules

[00:12:47] So yeah, pretty cool

[00:12:48] And so yeah, Star Trek First Contact is the subject of today's episode

[00:12:52] And so let's get into it, Mike

[00:12:54] It's time for Star Trek First Contact

[00:13:08] Imagine a race of beings

[00:13:12] Possessed of one mind

[00:13:16] Driven by one will

[00:13:19] Intent on one purpose

[00:13:23] To seize our past

[00:13:26] And control our future

[00:13:31] So the course for Earth, maximum warp

[00:13:34] Now one captain against orders

[00:13:37] Red Alerts, all hands to battle stations

[00:13:40] Must succeed where all others have failed

[00:13:43] Looks like the Control Decks 26 up to 11

[00:13:45] They have assimilated more than half the ship

[00:13:54] Surrender yourself or we will destroy your ship

[00:13:57] The line must be drawn here

[00:14:01] On November 22nd, Resistance is futile

[00:14:06] Star Trek First Contact

[00:14:09] Alright, that was from the trailer for Star Trek First Contact

[00:14:12] From 1996, directed by Jonathan Frakes

[00:14:15] Who also plays Riker in the Star Trek Next Generation cast

[00:14:18] And yes, Star Trek First Contact

[00:14:20] So I was excited about this one, Mike

[00:14:22] Because it gave me an excuse to continue watching my Star Trek movie

[00:14:25] Yes

[00:14:26] So to recap, we talked about Star Trek 2 The Wrath of Khan

[00:14:30] On this podcast a few months ago

[00:14:32] A movie we both really liked

[00:14:34] We had a good time with Wrath of Khan

[00:14:35] But in that time I was like, well you know what

[00:14:37] I am a casual Star Trek guy

[00:14:39] I have seen some episodes of the original series

[00:14:41] I have seen a little bit of Next Generation

[00:14:43] I had never watched any of the movies besides the

[00:14:45] JJ Abrams reboot trilogy

[00:14:48] And so before Wrath of Khan

[00:14:50] I watched Star Trek The Motion Picture

[00:14:52] Which is a masterpiece

[00:14:54] Change your life

[00:14:55] Yeah, it's unbelievable one of the best movies ever made

[00:14:57] And after I watched Wrath of Khan

[00:14:59] I also watched Star Trek 3 and 4

[00:15:01] Search for Spock and The Voyage Home

[00:15:03] Because 2, 3 and 4 are all like

[00:15:05] One kind of complete arc in the series

[00:15:08] Like they all kind of tell a continuous story

[00:15:10] And so I watched all those

[00:15:12] And my plan was to finish out my Blu-ray set

[00:15:14] I had the Blu-ray set of the original 6 movies

[00:15:17] All the ones with the original cast

[00:15:19] And then after 4 I just kind of fell off of it

[00:15:21] I think maybe because I had heard Star Trek 5 was bad

[00:15:24] And like never got a...

[00:15:25] Like I was like, I am going to watch it eventually

[00:15:26] But never did

[00:15:27] And so when Star Trek First Contact came up

[00:15:30] It was like, okay, I got to catch up to First Contact

[00:15:32] I got to watch all the movies before I get to that

[00:15:34] Because First Contact is the 8th one

[00:15:36] Yeah

[00:15:37] You can't go to the 8th movie without knowing what happens

[00:15:39] Exactly, you know?

[00:15:40] And that's also the thing

[00:15:41] Like I am less familiar with the next generation cast

[00:15:44] So I felt that like if I watched the movies at least

[00:15:47] I would have a better grasp of what was going on in First Contact

[00:15:50] That was kind of my thought process

[00:15:52] And so I watched Star Trek 5

[00:15:54] It is...

[00:15:55] You know, it's not great

[00:15:56] I do think it's better than some people give it credit for

[00:15:58] But it's okay

[00:15:59] It's the one that William Shatner directed

[00:16:01] Right

[00:16:02] And yeah, there are some scenes in there

[00:16:04] That are just real stupid

[00:16:05] But there's also some really fun stuff

[00:16:08] And it's largely about like Captain Kirk confronting God

[00:16:11] In a really fun and interesting way

[00:16:13] So even at their worst

[00:16:15] These movies get like really like heady and esoteric

[00:16:17] And all that stuff which I enjoy

[00:16:19] So I watched Star Trek 5

[00:16:20] It was okay

[00:16:21] But it was easily the worst of the ones that I watched so far

[00:16:23] Then I watched Star Trek 6

[00:16:25] The Undiscovered Country

[00:16:26] Which is a masterpiece

[00:16:28] It's a phenomenal film

[00:16:30] Which is better, one or six?

[00:16:32] You know, that's the debate that I've been having in my head

[00:16:35] Okay, alright

[00:16:36] And I gotta say

[00:16:37] I think I'm giving the edge to one

[00:16:39] Only because I think one is...

[00:16:42] That's that one's directed by Robert Wise

[00:16:44] Director of West Side Story and The Haunting

[00:16:46] And yeah, Invasion of the Body Snatchers

[00:16:49] The original I think

[00:16:50] No, he didn't do that one

[00:16:52] He did The Earth But Still

[00:16:54] And yeah, a lot of big movies

[00:16:56] And you know, he's a real filmmaker

[00:16:58] And it really feels like they're aping

[00:16:59] 2000-1 Space Odyssey

[00:17:00] And like it goes into some really wild weird places

[00:17:02] That I just found so enthralling

[00:17:04] But Star Trek 6 as the finale to this entire saga

[00:17:08] With The Enterprise Crew with the original cast

[00:17:10] It's so, so good

[00:17:11] It brings back Nicholas Meyer

[00:17:13] Who is the director of Star Trek 2

[00:17:14] With Wrath of Khan

[00:17:15] Which is like the consensus choice

[00:17:16] For Best Star Trek Movie

[00:17:17] Although I would say

[00:17:18] It's the fourth best of the ones that...

[00:17:20] You madman

[00:17:21] You're absolutely madman

[00:17:22] I would say I would go one, six, four, two

[00:17:26] Would be my...

[00:17:27] Look Mike, we're trying to keep subscribers right now

[00:17:30] What do you mean?

[00:17:32] I think we just told people that we need to

[00:17:34] Jettison subscribers over to the other feed actually

[00:17:36] That's what I mean

[00:17:37] We're trying to meet as many of these people

[00:17:39] To come over to the next feed with us

[00:17:41] And you're like, nah, Wrath of Khan's number four

[00:17:43] The fourth best

[00:17:44] It's the fourth best

[00:17:45] It's good

[00:17:46] It's good

[00:17:47] But you know

[00:17:48] I like the one with the whales better

[00:17:49] What can I say?

[00:17:50] But Star Trek 6 rules

[00:17:53] It's a phenomenal finale

[00:17:54] It's got Christopher Plummer

[00:17:56] As a Klingon who has an eyepatch

[00:17:58] And he's spouting Shakespeare the entire time

[00:18:00] I don't even see it

[00:18:01] It's incredible

[00:18:02] And it's such a good sign off for the entire original cast

[00:18:05] So I really love that

[00:18:06] And then I watched Star Trek Generations

[00:18:08] Which is the seventh one

[00:18:09] And so that is the first one with the next generation cast

[00:18:12] And I have less...

[00:18:13] I've seen next generation here and there

[00:18:16] But I've never really just sat down like

[00:18:18] I'm gonna watch Next Generation for a while

[00:18:20] That's never been a thing for me

[00:18:21] I've always been more of the original Trek watcher

[00:18:23] If I'm gonna watch any Trek

[00:18:24] And so Watch Generations

[00:18:25] And it was kind of meant as a transitional movie

[00:18:27] Into the next generation cast

[00:18:29] Generations came out right when Next Generation ended

[00:18:32] And so that's also kind of the weird thing to think about

[00:18:34] That's so weird

[00:18:35] Yeah, it's kind of the weird thing to think about

[00:18:37] All the movies with the old Trek cast were coming out

[00:18:39] As Next Generation was on TV

[00:18:42] Like Star Trek 4, 5 and 6

[00:18:44] Next Generation was still happening

[00:18:46] It was already there

[00:18:48] And so Generations was kind of like

[00:18:51] The studio had hedged their bets a little bit

[00:18:53] Because they weren't sure if people would turn out

[00:18:55] In theaters for the Next Generation cast

[00:18:57] But truly it was like Next Generation ended in May of 94

[00:19:01] Generations comes out like four months later

[00:19:03] Like it's that

[00:19:05] And so it's a movie that's largely the Next Generation cast

[00:19:08] But William Shatner is also in it

[00:19:11] It kind of like has Captain Kirk displaced in time

[00:19:14] And kind of comes back for the finale

[00:19:16] So the opening like 20 minutes or so

[00:19:18] Or 15, 20 minutes is Captain Kirk

[00:19:20] With Scotty and not McCoy

[00:19:22] Check off

[00:19:23] It's Scotty and Check off

[00:19:24] They're the only ones that come back

[00:19:25] For the original cast for this one

[00:19:26] And it's Captain Kirk at like, you know

[00:19:28] He's post retirement

[00:19:30] He's like kind of there as a PR stunt

[00:19:32] To like see the Enterprise off with a new crew

[00:19:35] Kind of thing

[00:19:36] And Alan Ruck is the captain of the ship

[00:19:37] And Sue's daughter is part of the crew

[00:19:39] Which is kind of a fun detail

[00:19:41] And I really liked the first 15 minutes of it

[00:19:43] I was like, hey, you know what?

[00:19:44] I'm in

[00:19:45] I love watching Captain Kirk

[00:19:47] I'll get to see him do some action

[00:19:48] And then I'll get to see him interacting

[00:19:50] With the Next Generation cast

[00:19:51] And that will be my transition into it

[00:19:53] And then he disappears for like an hour and a half

[00:19:55] And then shows up at the very end of the movie

[00:19:57] And it's real disappointing and then Kirk dies

[00:19:59] It's like, well, this is a bummer

[00:20:02] And the movie doesn't really do much to like

[00:20:04] Introduce you to the Next Generation cast

[00:20:06] Like they're kind of just, there's a time jump

[00:20:07] It's like 73 years later

[00:20:08] And now it's just the Next Generation cast

[00:20:10] Doing their thing

[00:20:11] And so I got it for the most part

[00:20:13] I was like, I know who Data is

[00:20:15] I know who Riker is

[00:20:16] Like all that stuff

[00:20:17] But it was definitely like

[00:20:18] I feel less connected to these characters

[00:20:20] Than I do the original series cast

[00:20:22] So there was that

[00:20:24] And so that's where I left off

[00:20:26] And went into Star Trek First Contact

[00:20:28] And First Contact, pretty good

[00:20:30] I really enjoyed it

[00:20:31] It's a good time

[00:20:32] I definitely felt more comfortable

[00:20:34] With the Next Generation cast in this one

[00:20:36] And enjoyed all those characters

[00:20:38] And the way they played off each other

[00:20:39] And Picard was great in it

[00:20:41] And all that stuff

[00:20:42] I did think it was like

[00:20:44] It's not nearly as good as some of the best

[00:20:46] Star Trek movies that I've seen so far

[00:20:48] But I know this is like the consensus choice

[00:20:49] For like the best Next Generation movie

[00:20:51] And based on what I've seen

[00:20:53] I believe it

[00:20:54] This seems about right

[00:20:55] From what I know about

[00:20:56] Insurrection and Nemesis

[00:20:57] Which is the other two

[00:20:58] Next Generation movies

[00:20:59] It doesn't seem like it's going to get better

[00:21:01] This one

[00:21:02] Okay, yeah

[00:21:03] Yeah, Next Generation is sort of like

[00:21:05] My Star Trek a little bit

[00:21:07] I'm not super into Star Trek in general

[00:21:10] But somebody that I lived with in college

[00:21:12] Was very into Next Generation

[00:21:14] And when we lived together

[00:21:15] They were I think all on Netflix

[00:21:17] Like the whole series

[00:21:18] Okay, they're all on HBO Max right now

[00:21:21] Well, the TV show

[00:21:22] Not the movies

[00:21:23] Okay, got you

[00:21:24] The Next Generation TV show

[00:21:25] Was just all on Netflix

[00:21:26] So she was just like

[00:21:27] I'm going to watch all of it

[00:21:28] Like and

[00:21:29] You know

[00:21:30] As happens when somebody in a living room

[00:21:32] Is watching a thing

[00:21:33] You're like well I'll sit down

[00:21:34] And then you just kind of watch it

[00:21:35] So I didn't watch all of it

[00:21:37] It was not like following along

[00:21:38] But I watched a pretty big

[00:21:40] Handful of episodes and stuff

[00:21:41] And really enjoyed it

[00:21:42] And then I can't remember

[00:21:44] One time I think it was after I'd come home

[00:21:46] I found out that BBC America

[00:21:48] At least at this point

[00:21:50] Just in the daytime

[00:21:52] Just plays Star Trek Next Generation

[00:21:54] Like it would just be on for four hours a day

[00:21:56] Or whatever

[00:21:57] Okay, I was going to watch some of this again

[00:21:59] Cool

[00:22:00] So I have some like you know

[00:22:01] Passing familiarity and stuff

[00:22:02] And then like just pretty into Next Generation

[00:22:04] In general

[00:22:05] So and I had watched First Contact

[00:22:07] Once before in college

[00:22:09] So I knew it was good

[00:22:11] I remember having a lot of fun with it

[00:22:12] And really liked it

[00:22:13] So on this rewatch for me

[00:22:14] It was just like hell yeah

[00:22:15] Fist pump like having so much fun

[00:22:17] But I forgot the like continuity

[00:22:19] Of it all

[00:22:20] Like that this is also after the series has ended

[00:22:22] So I'm like where's Jordy's visor

[00:22:24] Why is he half regular

[00:22:25] What's that about

[00:22:27] And I remember you mentioned

[00:22:28] I think in Generations is when data gets

[00:22:30] The like emotions chip or whatever

[00:22:32] And so like they reference that

[00:22:33] In this movie and stuff

[00:22:34] And I was like oh that's fun

[00:22:35] So yeah I don't know

[00:22:36] I think this movie feels like

[00:22:38] A pretty long episode of Star Trek

[00:22:40] To me and I think some of those best

[00:22:42] Movies are that also

[00:22:43] You know have that feeling to it

[00:22:45] So I was just like having so much fun

[00:22:47] The Borg is attacking at the very beginning

[00:22:49] This whole thing and they're like

[00:22:50] We gotta follow them through this temporal tunnel

[00:22:52] Or whatever

[00:22:53] You're just like fuck yeah

[00:22:54] Whatever you said it doesn't make sense

[00:22:55] But I'm in like that's so much fun

[00:22:57] And the Borg I think is just like one of the coolest

[00:22:59] Ideas of an enemy

[00:23:00] This is just sort of like cybernetic

[00:23:02] Robot thing that just self-replicate

[00:23:04] And assimilate everything in the universe

[00:23:06] Into this collective consciousness

[00:23:08] And the idea that you can only ever use

[00:23:10] Like one attack or one weapon

[00:23:12] Or one solution or whatever to stop

[00:23:14] The Borg in their tracks once

[00:23:16] Because as soon as they encounter it

[00:23:18] They assimilate it into there or whatever

[00:23:20] And they know how to defend against it

[00:23:22] And that threat of like

[00:23:23] How do you ultimately defeat this thing

[00:23:25] That you have to do it once right

[00:23:27] This whole thing

[00:23:28] So it's very fun and it's got this cool ticking clock

[00:23:30] With the end of the day before

[00:23:33] Humanity makes first contact

[00:23:35] With an alien race

[00:23:37] And they realize that

[00:23:39] And it's that whole idea of like

[00:23:41] They know this from their history textbooks

[00:23:43] And that whole thing with James Cromwell

[00:23:45] They have to help him achieve faster than light travel

[00:23:47] So that they can make first contact

[00:23:49] And if they don't the enterprise will stop existing

[00:23:51] Like that whole thing is so fun

[00:23:53] So yeah I just had a really like

[00:23:55] It's just a cool action sci-fi adventure romp

[00:23:58] And I love the little details and stuff

[00:24:00] In particular James Cromwell

[00:24:03] Just being like

[00:24:04] I forget his character's actual name

[00:24:06] But James Cromwell's

[00:24:07] Zephrum Cochran

[00:24:08] Zephrum Cochran

[00:24:09] How could I forget

[00:24:10] They say it so many times in the movie

[00:24:12] Just being like an alcoholic farmer guy

[00:24:15] That just like is obsessed with like rockabilly music

[00:24:18] Like old school 50s music and stuff

[00:24:20] In the year 2065

[00:24:22] So yeah I just I'd love this movie

[00:24:24] And it made me be like man

[00:24:25] I should re-watch that in TNG

[00:24:26] I should go back and watch some of those

[00:24:28] You know I don't know if I want to do like a series re-watch

[00:24:30] But like I don't know

[00:24:31] I'll just find some episodes and watch them

[00:24:32] Because they're fun

[00:24:33] Yeah it's funny you're like

[00:24:35] I would have been you know

[00:24:36] I was in college around the same time as you

[00:24:37] In your roommate watching Next Generation

[00:24:39] At that time

[00:24:40] I watched the original series around that time

[00:24:41] That's where I watched the original Star Trek

[00:24:43] And that was one of those things where I was watching it

[00:24:45] And I kind of fell off of it fairly quickly

[00:24:47] But I think I watched like 20-ish episodes

[00:24:49] Or so of the original series

[00:24:52] And it was one of those things where like

[00:24:53] It's a difficult one to binge

[00:24:55] Because it's not like it's not really meant for that

[00:24:57] A lot of it's slow moving

[00:24:58] Yeah

[00:24:59] A lot of it is you know dated in some ways

[00:25:01] A lot of it's fun

[00:25:02] But it is just like

[00:25:03] You can do like an episode at a time

[00:25:05] You know it's stuff to watch

[00:25:06] Like three or four episodes at once

[00:25:07] Kind of start to feel a little bit

[00:25:09] Yeah I feel like yeah

[00:25:11] Two to three was like kind of my limit in a go

[00:25:13] But I don't know there's something about TNG

[00:25:15] For me that just feels a little more

[00:25:17] I mean I guess you know it's the late 80s

[00:25:19] Early 90s it feels a little more like alive and fun

[00:25:21] And I assume they also did like

[00:25:23] Holodeck episodes and stuff on the original series

[00:25:25] That I don't know about

[00:25:27] I've just never seen those but

[00:25:28] I think they're mostly an Next Generation thing

[00:25:30] Oh really because those are some of my favorite stuff

[00:25:32] Like when that happens in first contact

[00:25:34] Obviously you knew what's going on

[00:25:36] Yeah

[00:25:37] Right yeah I knew that only because

[00:25:40] So again I've seen a little bit of Next Generation

[00:25:42] But I knew about the concept of the holodeck

[00:25:44] From community and the dreamatorium

[00:25:46] Yeah

[00:25:47] Which was like directly referenced to the holodeck from Next Generation

[00:25:50] Yeah

[00:25:51] And they would do episodes where it's like

[00:25:52] They're gonna go

[00:25:53] It's a Western

[00:25:54] And they're gonna have the square off

[00:25:56] At the end in town

[00:25:57] At high noon and stuff

[00:25:58] And then

[00:25:59] It comes back and they're on the enterprise

[00:26:00] And you're just like

[00:26:01] What?

[00:26:02] Like they're just like having a goof

[00:26:03] I do enjoy that like

[00:26:05] Whatever they're not in battle

[00:26:07] It seems like they're just playing pretend in the holodeck

[00:26:09] Yeah

[00:26:10] Yeah I mean like so that episode

[00:26:12] Sequence in first contact when they

[00:26:14] Have the board chase them into the holodeck

[00:26:17] And it's that 1920s gangster thing

[00:26:19] Like that's what there was

[00:26:21] An arc with those

[00:26:22] That like Jimmy the nose or whatever his name is

[00:26:24] Oh really?

[00:26:25] Yeah where they're like

[00:26:26] Picard wants to be a detective

[00:26:28] So there's just like a couple episodes

[00:26:29] Or whatever where they're just

[00:26:30] Are in a 1920s gangster noir thing

[00:26:32] And so they have that

[00:26:34] Kind of playing the hits in this movie

[00:26:35] Which is pretty fun

[00:26:36] Nice and that includes bringing back the

[00:26:38] Borg too

[00:26:39] Yeah

[00:26:40] Which you know that

[00:26:41] So that's I wasn't like

[00:26:42] Like I again sort of knew what the Borg

[00:26:44] Was before this movie

[00:26:45] Because I was sort of a way

[00:26:47] Like I had heard the name Borg before

[00:26:49] And was able to kind of grasp pretty quickly

[00:26:51] What had happened with the Borg

[00:26:53] And stuff

[00:26:54] I think this movie does a pretty good job

[00:26:55] Of like even though I hadn't seen the episodes

[00:26:57] Where Patrick Stewart gets assimilated into the Borg

[00:26:59] And all that

[00:27:01] I think it does a pretty good job of like

[00:27:02] Showing you what happened

[00:27:03] And kind of giving you

[00:27:04] Like much more so than Generations

[00:27:06] Which just kind of throws you in with the next generation cast

[00:27:08] This movie was like

[00:27:09] Okay we have to assume that some people

[00:27:11] Have not seen the TV show

[00:27:13] Or you know are jumping into this

[00:27:15] Without having seen much of it

[00:27:16] Especially back then when it was like

[00:27:18] You know it was much more episodic

[00:27:20] It wasn't like totally serialized storytelling

[00:27:22] And you had to assume like

[00:27:24] People would watch like one of every five episodes

[00:27:26] Of a show or whatever it was

[00:27:28] Yeah

[00:27:29] You know so I think it did a pretty good job

[00:27:30] Of like introducing to me

[00:27:32] Who the Borg were and Patrick Stewart's history

[00:27:34] With the Borg

[00:27:35] Which I think is a big part

[00:27:37] Of what makes this movie work

[00:27:38] Yeah and I think it's pretty cool like

[00:27:40] The Borg's history in Star Trek

[00:27:42] Is very interesting and stuff

[00:27:43] Because I think it's Deep Space Nine

[00:27:45] With Jerry Ryan

[00:27:47] Yeah

[00:27:48] Is Jerry Ryan Seven of Nine

[00:27:50] Or is that

[00:27:51] She's Seven of Nine who is a Borg

[00:27:53] I think

[00:27:54] Or part Borg or something

[00:27:55] And it's like the collective Seven of Nine

[00:27:57] She's on Voyager

[00:27:59] Yeah

[00:28:00] But yeah it's also weird to

[00:28:02] Like just thinking about the history of Star Trek movies

[00:28:04] That they're always

[00:28:06] After the series ends

[00:28:08] Like why is there no

[00:28:10] TNG movies while TNG is on the air

[00:28:12] They wait till that series ends

[00:28:14] I'm sure they start making movies

[00:28:16] It's like what is going on

[00:28:17] They maybe would

[00:28:18] You know it sort of transitions into a movie series

[00:28:20] I guess

[00:28:21] Sort of a TV to movie pipeline

[00:28:23] I mean I guess the reason why that didn't happen

[00:28:25] Is because they were still making movies

[00:28:26] With the original cast

[00:28:27] You know

[00:28:28] Yeah I mean that's fair I guess

[00:28:29] If you got them

[00:28:30] You're not going to not use them right

[00:28:31] If they're on board to make six movies

[00:28:33] You're going to make six movies with them

[00:28:34] Right

[00:28:35] And they were like proven successes

[00:28:36] Like they were like

[00:28:37] Proven in box office

[00:28:38] Never like runaway hits

[00:28:39] But like good enough kind of thing

[00:28:41] And plus we got Star Trek 6

[00:28:42] The Undiscovered Country out of it Mike

[00:28:43] Which is the best movie ever made

[00:28:44] So

[00:28:45] You know

[00:28:46] There is that

[00:28:47] So what I want to ask you

[00:28:49] Is did you have any

[00:28:51] Like pop culture awareness of

[00:28:53] First contact

[00:28:54] Like any stuff that you were like

[00:28:55] Oh that's from this

[00:28:56] Or anything like that

[00:28:57] Not really

[00:28:58] No I mean you know

[00:28:59] Pop culture awareness of next generation in general

[00:29:01] Right

[00:29:02] But yeah

[00:29:03] Not really from first contact

[00:29:05] Like I feel like I had a lot of pop culture awareness

[00:29:07] For certain other Star Trek movies

[00:29:09] Like Star Trek 2

[00:29:10] You know there's a million scenes in that movie

[00:29:12] Where you're like

[00:29:13] Ah yes you know the

[00:29:14] All that's you know

[00:29:15] Old Klingon proverb

[00:29:16] And all that stuff

[00:29:17] Like it's all there in Star Trek 2

[00:29:19] And I knew that like

[00:29:20] Star Trek 4 was the one about the whales

[00:29:22] And all that

[00:29:23] But I don't know

[00:29:24] First contact I knew it was next generation movie

[00:29:25] That's pretty much it

[00:29:26] Okay

[00:29:27] I had nothing

[00:29:28] I had nothing going into this

[00:29:29] I did not know that a

[00:29:31] The movie almost entirely takes place in Montana

[00:29:34] That's what I was gonna ask you

[00:29:38] Which was a fun discovery for me

[00:29:39] I was like

[00:29:40] I was sitting in my house in Montana

[00:29:41] And like did the

[00:29:42] Leo point to the screen

[00:29:43] And be like

[00:29:44] Yeah

[00:29:45] That's where I

[00:29:46] That's me

[00:29:47] That's here

[00:29:48] They're talking about here

[00:29:49] Yeah so that was fun

[00:29:50] And yeah I love all that

[00:29:52] I think the stuff with James Cromwell

[00:29:54] Is the best stuff in the movie

[00:29:55] Like I think every

[00:29:56] Like all the kind of time displaced stuff

[00:29:58] That sort of plays in the comedy

[00:29:59] But also him like

[00:30:00] Kind of reckoning with the idea

[00:30:02] That he's going to be the most important person

[00:30:04] In history

[00:30:05] Yeah

[00:30:06] Just doesn't want any other responsibility

[00:30:08] Yeah

[00:30:09] Is really great

[00:30:10] And really fun

[00:30:11] And I love that

[00:30:12] The crew is just like

[00:30:13] Totally giddy to be around him

[00:30:15] They're like

[00:30:16] They kind of have this

[00:30:17] Like kind of hero worship

[00:30:18] Of like sort of thing going on

[00:30:19] And I think it's Riker

[00:30:20] And maybe Data

[00:30:22] Like it's Riker and somebody else

[00:30:24] Who Jordan, LeForge

[00:30:26] Oh okay

[00:30:27] LeVar Burton's character

[00:30:28] LeVar Burton

[00:30:29] Okay yeah

[00:30:30] They're just like hanging out in the ship

[00:30:31] Like when he does the takeoff

[00:30:32] You know

[00:30:33] It's like I just want to be here to witness this

[00:30:35] This is pretty cool

[00:30:36] Also I don't think we talk about this enough

[00:30:38] Maybe people talked about this a lot

[00:30:39] When Next Generation was on TV

[00:30:40] Or Next Generation fans talk about this

[00:30:42] Riker is hot man

[00:30:44] He's hot as fuck

[00:30:45] Especially in generations

[00:30:46] In first contact he's hot too

[00:30:47] But like as soon as he walked out the screen

[00:30:49] I was like holy shit

[00:30:50] Yeah no he

[00:30:51] Riker is number one who fucks

[00:30:53] For sure

[00:30:54] Right well in this movie Data Fucks

[00:30:55] We should mention that too

[00:30:56] Yeah

[00:30:58] I forgot

[00:30:59] I mean it's so the

[00:31:01] Before we get to Data Fucking

[00:31:02] Just everybody's so hot in the show

[00:31:04] In the movie everybody

[00:31:06] It's so fun

[00:31:07] Yeah you know it was real

[00:31:09] Watching Patrick Stewart

[00:31:10] And you know having known Patrick Stewart

[00:31:12] My entire life

[00:31:13] But mostly knowing him for the X-Men

[00:31:15] Movies where he's like

[00:31:16] You know in a wheelchair

[00:31:17] He's the like enfeebled

[00:31:19] Professor Xavier

[00:31:20] Yeah prim and proper

[00:31:21] Yeah to see Patrick Stewart

[00:31:23] And a wife beater in this movie

[00:31:24] Was quite a trip man

[00:31:28] Just beating the shit out of some borgs

[00:31:30] And like smashing tables

[00:31:32] When he has that Captain A Habo

[00:31:33] Ventura

[00:31:34] It's just like all of that

[00:31:35] Beverly Crusher

[00:31:37] Maria Sertis

[00:31:38] They're all just so everybody's

[00:31:39] So hot in this movie

[00:31:40] It's crazy

[00:31:42] So that's a fun aspect of it too

[00:31:44] And you also got Alfred Woodard

[00:31:45] In this movie too

[00:31:46] Who has like sort of a

[00:31:47] It's not like

[00:31:48] There's a flirtatious relationship

[00:31:50] With her and Patrick Stewart

[00:31:52] Which is fun

[00:31:53] They never like do anything with that

[00:31:54] That would probably break the time stream

[00:31:55] Or something

[00:31:57] Well it's so funny too

[00:31:58] Like also they keep mentioning

[00:32:00] Like the prime directive

[00:32:01] Right

[00:32:02] Like they're so clearly violated

[00:32:03] Like they are building the

[00:32:05] Warped Drive 4

[00:32:06] So from Cochrane

[00:32:07] So he can

[00:32:08] And it's like a whole fun time loop thing

[00:32:09] That like they have to do that

[00:32:11] So that they exist in the future

[00:32:13] Right

[00:32:15] Which is fun

[00:32:16] And then yeah

[00:32:17] Also Neil McDonough's in this movie

[00:32:18] In a small role

[00:32:19] Or he gets

[00:32:20] He's like pretty prominent throughout

[00:32:22] Like the first act of the movie

[00:32:24] And then he gets assimilated by the Borg

[00:32:25] And there's a real like

[00:32:26] Great cold-blooded moment

[00:32:27] Where Picard shoots him

[00:32:28] Yeah

[00:32:29] Which is pretty cool

[00:32:30] Doug Demiland

[00:32:31] Pretty gnarly

[00:32:32] Yeah

[00:32:33] And it's funny because I also couldn't really remember

[00:32:34] The timeline

[00:32:35] Of the series and stuff

[00:32:36] So I was like

[00:32:37] Is this a prequel?

[00:32:38] Like I couldn't really remember

[00:32:40] And then like

[00:32:41] They like save Warf

[00:32:43] At the beginning of the fight

[00:32:44] With the Borg and stuff

[00:32:46] And I was like

[00:32:47] Is this how they find Warf?

[00:32:49] Like is this how he becomes a member of the crew

[00:32:50] But it's like

[00:32:51] Oh no this is all afterward

[00:32:52] Like it's all

[00:32:53] The show is over already

[00:32:54] Yeah

[00:32:55] So that's fun

[00:32:56] Because I think

[00:32:57] I don't think Neil McDonough is in the show

[00:32:58] I don't remember him

[00:32:59] Unless he's in at the end of the show

[00:33:01] I think he just like pops up in this movie

[00:33:03] Because he's not in Generations

[00:33:04] Okay

[00:33:05] So yeah

[00:33:06] And I think he's like

[00:33:07] I think he's wearing a red shirt

[00:33:08] I think he's like

[00:33:09] You know meant to be this movie's

[00:33:10] Red shirt, right

[00:33:11] So yeah there's that

[00:33:12] Also I do

[00:33:13] I also want to mention

[00:33:14] Michael Dorn who plays Warf

[00:33:15] Is also in Star Trek 6

[00:33:16] The end of the covered country

[00:33:17] Playing I believe Warf's grandfather

[00:33:19] No way

[00:33:20] He is Kirk's lawyer

[00:33:21] In the Klingon trial scene

[00:33:23] And it rules

[00:33:24] That's awesome

[00:33:27] But let's not forget that DataFox

[00:33:29] Let's go back to that

[00:33:30] Yeah DataFox in this movie man

[00:33:32] It's great

[00:33:33] Really enjoyed it

[00:33:34] It's so crazy

[00:33:35] Yeah

[00:33:36] Data gets captured by the Borg

[00:33:38] And there's the Borg Queen

[00:33:39] Played by Alice Krieg

[00:33:40] Who was

[00:33:41] She was like the

[00:33:42] Evil witch in Gretel and Hansel

[00:33:44] The Osgoode Perkins movie

[00:33:45] A couple of years ago

[00:33:46] But she's great in this movie

[00:33:48] She's really fun

[00:33:49] And yeah

[00:33:50] She's like

[00:33:51] Sort of seducing Data

[00:33:53] And Data has this like

[00:33:54] Moment of weakness

[00:33:56] Which he later describes

[00:33:57] Like oh it was like 0.08 seconds

[00:33:59] Or whatever

[00:34:00] He was never actually going to

[00:34:01] Betray the crew

[00:34:03] But yeah

[00:34:04] Data like mentions

[00:34:05] Like they talk about seduction

[00:34:07] And he's like

[00:34:08] Oh well of course I'm programmed

[00:34:09] With all the seduction techniques

[00:34:10] And you know

[00:34:11] All that stuff

[00:34:12] But it has been a long time

[00:34:13] Since he's had to use it

[00:34:14] And yeah

[00:34:15] Data fucks

[00:34:16] I love it's so funny

[00:34:18] To that moment

[00:34:19] Where she asked like

[00:34:20] How long has it been

[00:34:21] Since you've used all these techniques

[00:34:23] And he's like

[00:34:24] Well quite some time

[00:34:25] And then there's a beat

[00:34:26] And then he says precisely

[00:34:27] Down to the second

[00:34:28] It's like

[00:34:29] It works in a

[00:34:30] Like yeah

[00:34:31] He's a robot

[00:34:32] So like of course

[00:34:33] But also

[00:34:34] He's counting

[00:34:35] You know

[00:34:36] It's so funny

[00:34:37] And the idea that

[00:34:38] Like she

[00:34:39] The Borg Queen like

[00:34:40] Graphs

[00:34:41] Like a living

[00:34:42] Hue and tissue

[00:34:43] And he's like

[00:34:44] And he's like

[00:34:45] Like it's so crazy

[00:34:47] His ultimate dream

[00:34:48] To be human

[00:34:49] To have emotions

[00:34:50] Or whatever

[00:34:51] Right

[00:34:52] And so that's

[00:34:53] Something that I assume

[00:34:54] Is part of the TV show

[00:34:55] That he wants to be

[00:34:56] Human or he

[00:34:57] I think that's part of the

[00:34:58] Yeah

[00:34:59] I think that's sort of

[00:35:00] Like his whole

[00:35:01] Underlying thing

[00:35:02] Okay

[00:35:03] Because generations

[00:35:04] Gives him like

[00:35:05] An emotion chip

[00:35:06] Like he can

[00:35:07] Feel emotions now

[00:35:08] Which does result in

[00:35:09] A great moment

[00:35:10] Which I did know

[00:35:11] From just memes

[00:35:12] Where he

[00:35:14] Is like

[00:35:15] He's at a bar

[00:35:16] Or something

[00:35:17] And he like

[00:35:18] Has a drink

[00:35:19] And it's like

[00:35:20] Oh that is disgusting

[00:35:21] And so he's like

[00:35:22] More please

[00:35:23] Yeah

[00:35:24] So there was that

[00:35:25] Which was fun

[00:35:26] But yeah

[00:35:27] Data fucks this movie

[00:35:28] It's a great time

[00:35:29] That's fun

[00:35:30] What else?

[00:35:31] Yeah

[00:35:32] They say Star Trek

[00:35:33] In the movie

[00:35:34] Oh we should mention that

[00:35:35] They say something along the lines

[00:35:36] Like I can't believe

[00:35:37] You got

[00:35:38] You Spacemen

[00:35:39] Are on some kind of

[00:35:40] Star Trek

[00:35:41] Which is great

[00:35:42] I love that

[00:35:43] Hilarious

[00:35:44] I love the scene

[00:35:45] When they're on Earth

[00:35:46] Right after

[00:35:47] The Borg

[00:35:48] Or like

[00:35:49] When they come back in time

[00:35:50] To this moment

[00:35:51] They like air strike

[00:35:53] The Cochran's ship

[00:35:54] Or whatever

[00:35:55] They're trying to just stop him

[00:35:56] From ever achieving warp

[00:35:57] Speed

[00:35:58] So that they don't

[00:35:59] Have first contact

[00:36:00] But they don't know

[00:36:01] If he died

[00:36:02] Like when the Enterprise

[00:36:03] The crew

[00:36:04] They come to find them

[00:36:05] And he's missing

[00:36:06] And all this stuff

[00:36:07] And then it's Riker

[00:36:08] And

[00:36:09] Oh man

[00:36:10] That's his character

[00:36:11] His name

[00:36:12] I can't remember her character

[00:36:13] But she's

[00:36:14] She's found Cochran

[00:36:15] In a bar

[00:36:16] And she's like

[00:36:17] Having to drink with him

[00:36:18] To convince him

[00:36:19] Like

[00:36:20] It's this whole thing

[00:36:21] And she's like

[00:36:22] Never been drunk before

[00:36:23] She's like

[00:36:24] Oh I don't know

[00:36:25] Shots of something called tequila

[00:36:26] And she like

[00:36:27] Can't stand up straight

[00:36:28] And he's just blaring

[00:36:29] Rockabilly music

[00:36:30] On the jukebox

[00:36:31] And stuff

[00:36:32] Very funny

[00:36:33] Yeah that's fun

[00:36:34] Yeah I also wanted to mention

[00:36:35] This movie is directed by

[00:36:36] Jonathan Frakes

[00:36:37] Who plays Riker

[00:36:38] Yes

[00:36:39] He's a musician

[00:36:40] Leonard Nimoy

[00:36:41] Directed two movies

[00:36:42] William Shatner

[00:36:43] Directed a movie

[00:36:44] Jonathan Frakes

[00:36:45] Directed two movies

[00:36:46] He directed this one

[00:36:47] And he directed Insurrection

[00:36:48] Which is the next one

[00:36:49] And Jonathan

[00:36:50] He's also

[00:36:51] I think directed

[00:36:52] Like a lot of episodes

[00:36:53] Of the show

[00:36:54] And has directed

[00:36:55] Other Star Trek episodes

[00:36:56] Like beyond that

[00:36:57] Like I know he directed

[00:36:58] Deep Space Nine

[00:36:59] And I think he directed

[00:37:00] Some Picard episodes

[00:37:01] And all that stuff

[00:37:02] So he's

[00:37:03] I mean

[00:37:04] I think he mostly

[00:37:05] Directs now

[00:37:06] And he's mostly like

[00:37:07] A TV director

[00:37:08] But he was not the original choice

[00:37:09] To direct Mike

[00:37:10] Yeah apparently

[00:37:11] If you look at the Wikipedia page

[00:37:13] Like at the beginning

[00:37:14] Of the page

[00:37:15] It says two high profile directors

[00:37:16] Turn down the chance to direct

[00:37:17] Star Trek for his contact

[00:37:18] And then if you dig a little deeper

[00:37:20] It tells you who those directors are

[00:37:21] Who is it?

[00:37:22] Ridley Scott

[00:37:23] What

[00:37:24] Was one of them

[00:37:25] And John McTiernan

[00:37:26] Was also one of them

[00:37:27] Which yeah

[00:37:28] Both would have been wilds

[00:37:30] Either one of those

[00:37:31] Would have been crazy

[00:37:32] To see their Star Trek movie

[00:37:33] But I think ultimately

[00:37:34] They both turned it down

[00:37:35] But I think the studio

[00:37:36] And the writers of the movie

[00:37:38] I think the writers

[00:37:39] From what I was seeing

[00:37:40] Were they were all very aware

[00:37:42] That Generations was not that well received

[00:37:44] And like

[00:37:45] If they were going to make

[00:37:46] The next generation cast

[00:37:47] Work on screen

[00:37:48] It had to be with this movie

[00:37:50] Or else there wasn't going to be

[00:37:51] More next generation movies

[00:37:53] You know

[00:37:54] And so they kind of were like

[00:37:55] We need somebody who really knows

[00:37:57] Star Trek

[00:37:58] And Jonathan Frakes was the guy

[00:37:59] He's in Star Trek

[00:38:00] He's right there

[00:38:01] Yeah

[00:38:02] And so that kind of became the thing

[00:38:04] But I thought that was kind of a cool detail

[00:38:05] Like oh man

[00:38:06] Ridley Scott could have directed this movie

[00:38:07] John McTiernan could have directed this movie

[00:38:09] That's crazy

[00:38:10] I mean I can't help but think of

[00:38:12] That one like video

[00:38:13] That's Jonathan Frakes saying no

[00:38:15] For eight minutes or whatever

[00:38:17] From that whatever unsolved mystery show

[00:38:19] He was the host of

[00:38:20] Very fun

[00:38:21] Yes absolutely

[00:38:22] Also

[00:38:23] James Cromwell

[00:38:24] I think the writers wanted him

[00:38:25] For this movie

[00:38:26] And he got the part

[00:38:27] But the studio

[00:38:28] They wanted Tom Hanks

[00:38:29] Tom Hanks

[00:38:30] Was their pick

[00:38:31] For Zephyr and Cochran

[00:38:32] In this movie

[00:38:33] And Hanks was like a big fan of Star Trek

[00:38:35] So they were like

[00:38:36] You know who

[00:38:37] We can get him

[00:38:38] I think we can like

[00:38:39] Get him in this movie

[00:38:40] But yeah

[00:38:41] Jonathan Frakes was like

[00:38:42] Yeah Hanks is too well known for that

[00:38:43] We needed somebody

[00:38:44] Like more of a character actor

[00:38:46] For that part

[00:38:47] And James Cromwell put the bill

[00:38:48] He's great

[00:38:49] He's the farmer from Babe

[00:38:50] Love him

[00:38:51] Yeah yeah

[00:38:52] And he's so funny in this too

[00:38:53] Like we were saying

[00:38:54] That this whole alcoholic farmer thing

[00:38:55] He's got going

[00:38:56] And how he doesn't

[00:38:57] Doesn't want to be famous

[00:38:58] And you know

[00:38:59] The weight of that

[00:39:00] Being the most important human

[00:39:01] That's ever lived

[00:39:02] And like you're about to usher in

[00:39:03] I love the idea of the

[00:39:05] You know they talk about being

[00:39:07] Like in a post

[00:39:09] Post currency

[00:39:10] Post money world right

[00:39:11] That's the whole like

[00:39:12] Star Trek utopian fantasy thing

[00:39:13] Yeah a real fantasy

[00:39:15] A real fantasy

[00:39:16] And they tell him that

[00:39:17] That like you know

[00:39:18] You achieving this flight

[00:39:19] Usher's in an era of peace

[00:39:20] And it'll solve poverty

[00:39:21] And hunger

[00:39:22] And war

[00:39:23] And conflict

[00:39:24] Humanity will go to the stars

[00:39:26] Right and he's like

[00:39:27] He like that's

[00:39:28] What the conflict

[00:39:29] The shame is that

[00:39:30] He admits like

[00:39:31] He built this whole thing

[00:39:32] Because somebody was going to pay him

[00:39:33] A lot of money

[00:39:34] To buy this technology

[00:39:35] If it works

[00:39:36] And that's all that matters

[00:39:37] I wanted to retire on a private island

[00:39:39] With beautiful women

[00:39:40] Was basically what he

[00:39:41] Wanted to do with this

[00:39:42] Fascinating

[00:39:43] Yeah

[00:39:44] So yeah

[00:39:45] I love James Cromwell in this movie

[00:39:46] And then also

[00:39:47] Patrick Stewart great in this movie

[00:39:48] Like really phenomenal

[00:39:50] And I think does a really good job

[00:39:51] Of like you know

[00:39:52] Again

[00:39:53] I don't have a lot of the background

[00:39:54] Of his relationship with the Borg

[00:39:56] But I feel it in his performance

[00:39:57] In this movie

[00:39:58] Yeah

[00:39:59] Where you can really tell

[00:40:00] He's like

[00:40:01] This is a personal matter for him

[00:40:02] To the degree where it ultimately

[00:40:04] Ends up being compared to Captain Ahab

[00:40:05] Looking for Moby Dick

[00:40:06] And yeah

[00:40:08] I found that to be a pretty fascinating

[00:40:10] You know I think it's one of those things

[00:40:12] Where it seems like an obvious comparison

[00:40:14] Like in retrospect

[00:40:15] But when it happens

[00:40:16] You're like

[00:40:17] Ah yes

[00:40:18] I see

[00:40:19] I see

[00:40:20] Yeah

[00:40:21] I see what's going on here

[00:40:22] Yeah

[00:40:23] I love that whole thing

[00:40:24] And how he doesn't even realize it

[00:40:25] And that's like also

[00:40:27] Like Picard's whole like shtick

[00:40:29] Is that he

[00:40:30] I mean I guess also

[00:40:31] Kirk too right

[00:40:32] Like that like he's a

[00:40:33] He knows all the classics

[00:40:34] And he's Shakespeare

[00:40:35] And like all that stuff too

[00:40:37] So for him to like

[00:40:38] Not make that connection himself

[00:40:39] Is pretty fun

[00:40:40] And yeah

[00:40:41] He's just got it

[00:40:42] He's chasing the Borg man

[00:40:43] They gave him trauma

[00:40:44] PTSD

[00:40:45] He has that nightmare dream

[00:40:46] At the beginning

[00:40:47] Of him being Lecutis

[00:40:48] Or whatever

[00:40:49] Again

[00:40:50] What he was his Borg self

[00:40:51] Right

[00:40:52] And

[00:40:53] He's not going to let it happen

[00:40:54] Anymore

[00:40:55] And even saves data

[00:40:56] Because he knows what a terrible

[00:40:57] Fate this will be

[00:40:58] Exactly

[00:40:59] Yeah he saves data

[00:41:00] Saves the enterprise

[00:41:01] Saves the crew

[00:41:02] And yeah

[00:41:03] And he is like

[00:41:04] More of an action hero in this movie

[00:41:05] Which is

[00:41:06] Which is also pretty fun to see

[00:41:07] I feel like

[00:41:08] You know my perception of Picard

[00:41:10] Again having a minimal

[00:41:11] You know having seen

[00:41:12] Next Generation a little bit

[00:41:13] I was like

[00:41:14] Oh yeah he's like the intellectual

[00:41:15] Kirk is the

[00:41:16] You know the brash action hero guy

[00:41:18] And Picard is the intellectual

[00:41:19] He likes to hang out in the holodeck

[00:41:21] And read Shakespeare

[00:41:22] Or whatever

[00:41:23] But

[00:41:24] Self crimes

[00:41:25] But in this one

[00:41:26] He's gunning down Borgs here

[00:41:27] In the hallway

[00:41:28] And all that

[00:41:29] I mean literally gunning them down

[00:41:30] With a Tommy gun in the holodeck

[00:41:31] Yeah

[00:41:32] Which is great

[00:41:33] So fun

[00:41:35] So yeah I love that for him

[00:41:37] That was great

[00:41:38] Yeah any other random scenes

[00:41:39] In Star Trek First Contact

[00:41:40] You want to talk about Mike

[00:41:41] Any other stuff that

[00:41:42] We should bring up

[00:41:43] No I think that

[00:41:44] Specifically that one

[00:41:45] Scene it's when they've

[00:41:47] Done the launch

[00:41:49] They're in space

[00:41:50] Yeah

[00:41:51] And the enterprise

[00:41:52] That which at this point

[00:41:54] Has been assimilated

[00:41:55] Right they don't know

[00:41:56] Or actually this is actually when

[00:41:58] The board queen tells data to like

[00:42:00] Shoot

[00:42:01] Cocker in the out of the sky basically

[00:42:03] Before they go to warp

[00:42:04] And there's a moment it's like

[00:42:05] This is like the gift from this movie

[00:42:07] Where James Cromwell turns

[00:42:09] And looks out the window

[00:42:10] And sees the enterprise

[00:42:11] And he goes

[00:42:12] Sweet Jesus

[00:42:13] And he just like has this crazy

[00:42:14] Vote

[00:42:15] Like it's the most insane take

[00:42:17] And it's like this is the one

[00:42:18] That we're using

[00:42:19] Very fun

[00:42:21] Yeah absolutely

[00:42:22] So I am like

[00:42:23] You know I'm probably going to watch

[00:42:25] Star Trek Insurrection

[00:42:26] Star Trek Nemesis now

[00:42:27] I hope too soon

[00:42:28] Just to complete the series

[00:42:30] Just to say you did it

[00:42:31] Just to say I did it

[00:42:32] Once I do those

[00:42:33] I'll have seen every Star Trek movie

[00:42:34] You know and so

[00:42:35] I got to do it

[00:42:36] But I've heard they're bad

[00:42:37] I don't know

[00:42:38] Have you seen the Insurrection or Nemesis Mike?

[00:42:39] No I don't think so

[00:42:40] I don't think I've ever seen them

[00:42:41] Okay I know Tom Hardy's in one of them

[00:42:43] I think he's in Nemesis

[00:42:44] That's cool

[00:42:45] So that's something

[00:42:46] And yeah I know Jonathan Frakes

[00:42:48] Directed the next one

[00:42:49] So it can't be that bad

[00:42:50] Based on first contact right

[00:42:51] Right maybe

[00:42:52] It's gotta be good

[00:42:54] So we'll see what happens

[00:42:56] But yeah I want to watch those

[00:42:57] And then I also kind of want to re-watch

[00:42:59] The Abrams trilogy

[00:43:00] The reboot trilogy

[00:43:01] Because I haven't watched any of those

[00:43:03] Since Star Trek Beyond came out

[00:43:04] And yeah I really loved

[00:43:06] Star Trek 09 when it came out

[00:43:08] Saw it in theaters like two or three times

[00:43:09] And watched it a couple of times since

[00:43:11] And beyond I think

[00:43:12] I watched it one time

[00:43:13] But really liked it

[00:43:14] It's really just

[00:43:15] Star Trek in the darkness

[00:43:16] The tanks the whole thing

[00:43:17] That's you know

[00:43:18] It's that Rise of Skywalker

[00:43:19] Of that Star Trek trilogy

[00:43:20] You know it's just the one that's like

[00:43:21] Oh I look back on the whole trilogy

[00:43:23] Less fondly because of this one bad movie

[00:43:25] Yeah I recently thought about

[00:43:27] That's the Abrams special that we can get

[00:43:29] That's the Abrams special for sure

[00:43:31] I recently thought about going back

[00:43:33] And re-watching Rise of Skywalker

[00:43:35] Just to

[00:43:36] I only saw it I think the one time

[00:43:38] In theaters

[00:43:39] It was just like nah

[00:43:40] It's like why am I gonna do that to myself

[00:43:42] I've seen Rise of Skywalker twice

[00:43:43] I saw it the one time in theaters

[00:43:45] And that was the first time

[00:43:46] Since they've been making new Star Wars

[00:43:47] Movies that I didn't see a Star Wars

[00:43:48] Movie twice

[00:43:49] In theaters

[00:43:50] I saw it the one time in theaters

[00:43:51] Was severely disappointed

[00:43:53] We did our episode about it

[00:43:54] And you guys like

[00:43:56] Sort of talked about enough stuff

[00:43:57] That you liked in it

[00:43:58] Or I was like

[00:43:59] Maybe there's something pretty good here

[00:44:01] And then I watched it again

[00:44:02] Like a month later

[00:44:03] Like I got the Blu-ray

[00:44:04] And watched it at home

[00:44:05] And I was like no this is worse

[00:44:06] This is actively the worst

[00:44:08] Star Wars movie this sucks

[00:44:11] Which is a real shame

[00:44:13] And it's a shame how

[00:44:14] Like you know

[00:44:15] I liked Force Awakens when it came out

[00:44:17] And I still like Force Awakens

[00:44:18] I think it's a pretty good movie

[00:44:19] And I love Last Jedi

[00:44:20] I think Last Jedi is great

[00:44:21] But it is a weird thing

[00:44:22] Where like because Rise of Skywalker

[00:44:24] Shit the bed so badly

[00:44:26] Like in retro

[00:44:28] That entire trilogy feels like tainted in some way

[00:44:30] Like if it had even just been okay

[00:44:32] I think everybody would look upon those movies

[00:44:35] A lot better

[00:44:36] Yeah

[00:44:37] But somehow the dead speaker

[00:44:38] Whatever that first line is

[00:44:39] Somehow Palpatine has risen

[00:44:40] Right or something is bad

[00:44:41] Yeah, I think it's a good thing

[00:44:42] That's what I'm talking about

[00:44:43] But I think it's a good thing

[00:44:44] That's what I'm talking about

[00:44:45] Somehow Palpatine has risen

[00:44:46] Right or something is bad

[00:44:47] Yeah, well you got both

[00:44:48] I mean the opening crawl starts with

[00:44:50] The dead speak

[00:44:51] And then you know

[00:44:52] Minutes later

[00:44:54] Poe Dameron

[00:44:55] Oscar Isaac comes out

[00:44:56] And it says somehow Palpatine returns

[00:44:58] And we're all just like

[00:44:59] Alright I guess

[00:45:00] Sure

[00:45:01] I guess Palpatine's back

[00:45:03] I think honestly my main issue with that movie

[00:45:05] We're getting off topic I guess a little bit

[00:45:07] But it's all

[00:45:08] Abrams made two movies

[00:45:10] In both of them so it counts

[00:45:11] My main issue with that movie

[00:45:13] Is that it weirdly felt the need to be

[00:45:15] A finale to all of Star Wars

[00:45:17] Right

[00:45:18] You know

[00:45:19] Like it only had to be

[00:45:20] The finale to the sequel trilogy

[00:45:22] It only had to be the finale to 7, 8 and 9

[00:45:24] But for some reason they felt the pressure

[00:45:25] To be the finale to all nine movies

[00:45:27] And I think completely buckled under that pressure

[00:45:30] Yes

[00:45:31] Totally caved to the backlash

[00:45:33] Of Lash at Eye

[00:45:35] I mean that too yeah

[00:45:36] Ends on such a hopeful anyone can be

[00:45:38] Oh we don't have to get into it

[00:45:39] I'm sorry

[00:45:40] We don't need it

[00:45:41] But that kid picking up the broom

[00:45:42] With the force is the coolest shit

[00:45:43] That's ever happened in Star Wars

[00:45:44] And then they ruined it

[00:45:46] Yeah

[00:45:47] I mean well the coolest shit that happens

[00:45:48] In Star Wars happens about an hour before

[00:45:49] Where the light speed thing happens through the show

[00:45:51] Oh okay I forgot about that

[00:45:53] That's the best thing ever

[00:45:54] But I do think that the ending of

[00:45:56] Lash at Eye is open ended enough

[00:45:58] Where it almost feels like

[00:46:00] You have enough closure with just those two movies

[00:46:02] Forza Wiggins and Lash at Eye

[00:46:04] Like you don't need

[00:46:05] Right in the Skywalker

[00:46:06] You can just be like

[00:46:08] Ah yes the battle rages on

[00:46:10] And you know more and more will join the fight

[00:46:12] And that's a good place to end it

[00:46:14] Yeah

[00:46:15] Yeah

[00:46:16] And similarly

[00:46:18] First contact ends

[00:46:20] With them returning to the 24th century

[00:46:22] Yes they make it back

[00:46:24] They make it back

[00:46:25] They create their own existence

[00:46:26] Yes in case you were in doubt

[00:46:28] The good guys win at the end of Star Trek

[00:46:30] First contact

[00:46:31] And they make it back to their own time

[00:46:32] Which is great

[00:46:33] I think the time travel stuff in Star Trek

[00:46:35] Is often my favorite stuff

[00:46:37] Looking back at some of these movies

[00:46:38] I mean Star Trek IV The Voyage Home

[00:46:40] Rules

[00:46:41] It's fantastic

[00:46:42] That is the one with the whales

[00:46:43] Yes

[00:46:44] Where they travel back in time to the 1980s

[00:46:47] To save humpback whales

[00:46:49] And it's a great time

[00:46:50] It's so funny

[00:46:51] I wonder how much they did time travel stuff

[00:46:53] On the original series

[00:46:54] Like on the TV show

[00:46:55] Yeah

[00:46:56] But it's so funny to see

[00:46:58] Like just how casually

[00:47:00] They have time travel now

[00:47:02] It's never a big deal

[00:47:04] It's something that can just easily do

[00:47:06] Yeah they're just like

[00:47:08] At the beginning of this movie

[00:47:10] They're like the Borg have like I said opened

[00:47:12] A temporal tunnel or whatever

[00:47:13] And Worf is just like

[00:47:14] Ah time travel

[00:47:15] Like what?

[00:47:17] Nobody flinches at all

[00:47:19] Go back 300 years

[00:47:21] It's so easy to do

[00:47:23] And it makes you wonder

[00:47:24] What are they even the holodeck for

[00:47:25] If they can just time travel back to any period

[00:47:29] It's so funny

[00:47:30] And then thinking about

[00:47:32] Michelle Yeo in Discovery

[00:47:34] That they kill her in that two part pilot

[00:47:37] And then they do some time

[00:47:39] You I mean shit to bring her back

[00:47:40] But now she's like the emperor of earth or whatever

[00:47:42] And it's like that's so fun

[00:47:44] That Star Trek can just be like

[00:47:46] Ah who gives a shit

[00:47:47] From 200 years ago

[00:47:49] Or whatever

[00:47:50] Yeah I think that Michelle Yeo

[00:47:51] Okay she's from like a parallel universe

[00:47:52] Or something

[00:47:53] Yeah that's true

[00:47:54] Where she didn't die or something like that

[00:47:55] And then comes into ours

[00:47:56] And that will follow up on that

[00:47:58] In Star Trek section 31

[00:48:00] The TV movie

[00:48:01] Yes

[00:48:02] That'll be based on Michelle Yeo's character

[00:48:03] So gotta catch up on Star Trek Discovery

[00:48:05] To see what's going on there

[00:48:07] Got a lot to watch

[00:48:08] Yeah I do

[00:48:09] Like you know there are so many

[00:48:11] Star Trek shows going on right now

[00:48:12] And Star Trek Discovery I think is ending

[00:48:14] Or has ended or something like that

[00:48:16] It's in its final season

[00:48:17] I don't even know

[00:48:18] Yeah I think so

[00:48:19] Cause then there's also

[00:48:20] Oh man I can't remember the name

[00:48:22] There's another space station one I think

[00:48:24] There's lower decks

[00:48:26] Which is the cartoon show

[00:48:27] That's the cartoon

[00:48:28] There's Discovery

[00:48:29] And then there's also Star Trek

[00:48:30] Strange New Worlds

[00:48:31] That's what I'm thinking

[00:48:32] It's the strange new worlds

[00:48:33] Which I believe is a prequel to Discovery

[00:48:36] Or it features Captain Pike

[00:48:38] And it's mostly the original series cast

[00:48:40] But the original series characters

[00:48:42] So it's a hurrah, it's spock

[00:48:44] It's all that kind of stuff

[00:48:46] I guess it must be prequel to Discovery

[00:48:48] Cause Discovery is later right

[00:48:49] Or maybe actually Discovery might be the prequel

[00:48:51] I think Discovery is a prequel

[00:48:52] Cause that opening pilot

[00:48:54] Two part pilot is when the Romulans I think

[00:48:56] Or the Klingons reawaken right

[00:48:58] Something like that

[00:48:59] Which is what makes Star Trek 6 so cool

[00:49:01] Is that it's about the Klingons

[00:49:06] Sort of coming into the fold of the Federation

[00:49:08] Like they are genuinely looking for peace

[00:49:12] You know they're trying to end their wartime ways

[00:49:15] And that's like controversial among the Klingon people

[00:49:17] But in order for their survival they have to do it

[00:49:19] And so the Enterprise is tasked

[00:49:21] With escorting the Klingon ambassador

[00:49:23] Or like the leader of the Klingons

[00:49:25] To Earth so they can sign the peace treaty

[00:49:27] And all that kind of stuff

[00:49:28] But while they're doing that

[00:49:29] The Klingon leader is killed

[00:49:30] And the Kirk and McCoy are framed for it

[00:49:32] No

[00:49:33] Not my boys

[00:49:34] It's such a good premise for it

[00:49:36] And then there's the great trial in the Klingon area

[00:49:39] Where Kirk and McCoy are thrown into a Klingon prison

[00:49:42] And they have to escape

[00:49:43] And Spock meanwhile has to figure out

[00:49:45] Who framed Kirk and McCoy

[00:49:46] It's fantastic

[00:49:47] Wow

[00:49:48] So so good

[00:49:49] Star Trek 6

[00:49:50] I mean first contact was great

[00:49:51] But Star Trek 6 man

[00:49:53] Out of this world

[00:49:54] Better than Star Trek 2

[00:49:55] I think you're full on approaching

[00:49:58] Star Trek guy levels

[00:49:59] I think I'm getting there

[00:50:00] I think once I start regularly watching one of the shows

[00:50:03] I think I'll fully be there

[00:50:04] And so like I said

[00:50:05] When we talked about Star Trek Discovery on the Michelle Yopod

[00:50:08] Part of me was like

[00:50:09] Maybe I should keep watching this

[00:50:10] You know it seems like it would be a fun show to keep watching

[00:50:12] Never did

[00:50:13] I watched that pilot episode

[00:50:14] And never continued

[00:50:15] And from what I've heard

[00:50:16] Like it's not a super well liked show

[00:50:18] Among Star Trek fans

[00:50:19] But I have heard that Star Trek Strange New Worlds

[00:50:21] Is great

[00:50:22] I've heard really good things about that show

[00:50:24] And how inventive it is

[00:50:25] I know there's a musical episode at one point

[00:50:27] And so yeah

[00:50:28] That's the one where I'm like

[00:50:29] If I'm gonna get into a Star Trek show

[00:50:30] That's probably the one I'm gonna check out

[00:50:32] So yeah

[00:50:33] I don't know

[00:50:34] While you're in between chapters of Dune

[00:50:36] You could watch an episode of Strange New World

[00:50:38] Yes

[00:50:39] As I've said

[00:50:40] I'm becoming a Dune guy

[00:50:41] And becoming a Star Trek guy

[00:50:42] That's my goal

[00:50:43] Now that you're in your 30s

[00:50:45] You've earned your right

[00:50:46] Yes exactly

[00:50:47] It's less embarrassing now

[00:50:49] I don't have to care about what people think

[00:50:50] Yes

[00:50:52] But yeah

[00:50:53] Also I wanted to mention real quick

[00:50:55] One scene in Star Trek First Contact

[00:50:56] That I really liked

[00:50:57] Is there's the scene where

[00:51:00] Picard and Worf sort of have a standoff

[00:51:02] Or they have like an argument

[00:51:04] And like you know

[00:51:05] Picard is like

[00:51:06] You know threatening the safety of the Enterprise

[00:51:07] In order to get the Borg

[00:51:08] And Worf is telling him not to do that

[00:51:09] And Picard snaps at him

[00:51:11] And like you know insults him in some way

[00:51:13] And then a few minutes later

[00:51:14] He comes back to the ship

[00:51:15] And apologizes to Worf

[00:51:16] And I think it's a really touching scene

[00:51:18] Yeah yeah I think that's

[00:51:19] Yeah I think is that when he

[00:51:21] Orders everybody to abandon the Enterprise

[00:51:23] And he's going to blow it like self destruct

[00:51:25] To the ship or something right

[00:51:26] And Worf is like no

[00:51:27] And yeah they have a little bit of a fight

[00:51:29] It's good stuff

[00:51:30] Yeah absolutely rocks

[00:51:31] Okay any last thoughts about Star Trek First Contact

[00:51:33] Before we start wrapping this up Mike?

[00:51:34] No I think just broadly

[00:51:36] Even for a movie like this

[00:51:38] Which is you know

[00:51:39] The 8th Star Trek movie

[00:51:41] It's whatever

[00:51:42] All this stuff

[00:51:43] You know we just used to have movies

[00:51:44] These are sets in real things

[00:51:46] It's dudes with plastic

[00:51:48] Fucking tape to their face

[00:51:50] To look like the Borg

[00:51:51] You know it's like actual stuff

[00:51:53] Yes yeah I agree

[00:51:54] Bring back stuff in movies

[00:51:56] Bring back things

[00:51:57] Bring back things that's all we need

[00:51:59] Yeah and also make a new Star Trek movie

[00:52:01] Come on you cowards

[00:52:02] Do it

[00:52:03] Do it

[00:52:04] What the hell

[00:52:05] Yeah I mean you got that reboot cast right there

[00:52:07] Who are so good

[00:52:08] Oh my god they can't afford those guys anymore

[00:52:12] There's no way

[00:52:13] I mean who do you got

[00:52:14] I think you can afford Zachary Quinto

[00:52:15] Okay yeah I guess what else is he doing

[00:52:17] Yeah exactly that's what I mean

[00:52:19] He must be doing something but I don't know what

[00:52:20] I think he's mostly a theater guy

[00:52:22] You know okay Chris Pine pretty big

[00:52:24] He's pretty big these days

[00:52:26] Anton Yelchin dead can't get him

[00:52:28] Can't get him

[00:52:29] Can't get him

[00:52:30] Carl Urban I think you can get him

[00:52:31] I mean he's on the boys now

[00:52:32] Yeah

[00:52:33] Right so that's kind of his big thing

[00:52:34] But I think he would come back for a Star Trek movie

[00:52:36] I think so

[00:52:37] Zoe Saldana

[00:52:38] She's Gamora

[00:52:39] She's too much

[00:52:40] Gamora and Natiri

[00:52:42] And Natiri

[00:52:43] Yeah but she was doing all that

[00:52:44] Like when the Star Trek movies are coming out too

[00:52:46] I guess she was doing an avatar

[00:52:47] When Star Trek came out

[00:52:48] But Guardians was a few years away

[00:52:49] Now she might be a little big

[00:52:51] Simon Pegg, Mr. Mission Impossible himself

[00:52:53] He can't

[00:52:54] He was already doing a Mission Impossible then too

[00:52:56] Simon Pegg would come back Chris

[00:52:58] He wrote Star Trek Beyond

[00:53:02] It's just fun to pretend that the most

[00:53:04] Likely person to come back

[00:53:06] Right

[00:53:07] Too big to come back

[00:53:09] He would come back for almost nothing I think

[00:53:11] He just loves Star Trek

[00:53:12] He would love Flan Scottie again I think

[00:53:14] I think so

[00:53:15] Who else there's one more guy

[00:53:16] Yeah who else is in that cast

[00:53:18] You got

[00:53:19] Man

[00:53:20] I remember Alice Eve was in Star Trek Into Darkness

[00:53:22] But she's not one of the main crew

[00:53:23] Peter Weller was in that movie too

[00:53:25] I don't remember Peter Weller

[00:53:27] Is he like an admiral or some shit?

[00:53:28] Something like that

[00:53:29] Yeah

[00:53:30] Benedict Cumberbatch was the bad guy

[00:53:31] But Peter Weller I think is the one who like

[00:53:32] Warns them about Khan or something

[00:53:34] Oh yeah

[00:53:35] Yeah

[00:53:36] Who else are we forgetting about

[00:53:38] In the Star Trek

[00:53:39] John Cho

[00:53:40] Oh yeah John Cho

[00:53:41] I think he would do it

[00:53:42] No

[00:53:43] Yeah probably I guess

[00:53:44] Right come on

[00:53:45] I think that's the main

[00:53:46] The main cast

[00:53:47] That pretty much covers it I think

[00:53:49] Yeah I'm doing a quick

[00:53:51] Cross-reference right now

[00:53:53] You got Zachary Quinto a spot

[00:53:54] Carl Urban as McCoy

[00:53:55] Zoe Saldana as Uhura

[00:53:56] Simon Pegas Scottie

[00:53:57] John Cho as Sulu

[00:53:58] Anthony Elchin with Check Off RIP

[00:54:00] Bruce Greenwood was Pike

[00:54:02] That's right

[00:54:03] That was cool

[00:54:04] I liked Bruce Greenwood

[00:54:05] I think he dies in 0-9

[00:54:07] I think so yeah

[00:54:08] I think so yeah

[00:54:09] And Eric Bano was the bad guy

[00:54:11] Yeah and that one also involved time travel

[00:54:13] Cause yeah it was like

[00:54:14] It involved him traveling from the prime time

[00:54:16] Like that split off into a separate whole thing

[00:54:19] And that's why Leonard Neyman was in it

[00:54:21] Or Leonard Neyman I mean yeah

[00:54:23] Yeah and that's truly you know

[00:54:25] Star Trek 09 was like the prototype for Force Awakens

[00:54:28] Like in terms of like what the legacy sequel became

[00:54:30] 100%

[00:54:31] That's like very much what it was

[00:54:33] And I remember when J.D. Abrams was

[00:54:35] Announced as the director for Force Awakens

[00:54:37] My main thought was like

[00:54:38] Yeah that makes sense

[00:54:39] He already made a Star Wars movie

[00:54:40] Like his Star Trek is very much just Star Wars

[00:54:43] Right

[00:54:44] Yeah remember Eric Bano I wonder what he's doing

[00:54:47] Eric Bano what is he up to these days

[00:54:49] He played Captain Nero in Star Trek 09

[00:54:51] He was in Deliver Us from Evil in 2014

[00:54:54] He played the title role in a true crime miniseries

[00:54:57] Called Dirty John in 2018

[00:54:59] Okay alright

[00:55:01] So there was that

[00:55:02] Oh he was the voice of Monterey Jack

[00:55:04] In the Disney plus original movie Chippendale Rescue Rangers

[00:55:07] Ah

[00:55:08] So there was that

[00:55:10] Yeah hasn't really been doing too much

[00:55:12] Not a lot of big Eric Bano movies in the filmography lately

[00:55:15] I think the biggest one in the last few years

[00:55:18] Was King Arthur Legend of the Sword

[00:55:20] I remember that movie I think

[00:55:21] I definitely remember seeing trailers for it

[00:55:23] Yeah

[00:55:24] Never watched it that was a Guy Ritchie Join

[00:55:25] A Guy Ritchie Join starring Charlie Hunnam

[00:55:27] Whoa

[00:55:28] Oh yeah I did see that then

[00:55:29] You saw it

[00:55:30] I did see that yeah

[00:55:31] Okay how was it

[00:55:32] I think it's pretty good

[00:55:33] It's a Guy Ritchie movie

[00:55:34] I think Dean Hansen is in it

[00:55:35] Maybe

[00:55:36] Anyway that's fun

[00:55:37] I've been meaning to rewatch Munich lately

[00:55:39] I mean Munich Rocks

[00:55:40] That's what I'm thinking about Eric Bano

[00:55:41] Yeah it's a very good movie

[00:55:43] Also I remember there's like a scene in Knocked Up

[00:55:45] Where they talk about how good Eric Bano is in Munich

[00:55:47] Incredible

[00:55:48] What a wild pull to have

[00:55:50] A Knocked Up reference which is actually a reference to Munich

[00:55:53] Yes I just remember that being like

[00:55:55] It was funny but it like weirdly took me out of the movie

[00:55:57] It was like let's show a very specific thing

[00:56:00] For them to do

[00:56:01] And then Joe Dabatow's next movie was Funny People

[00:56:03] Which featured Eric Bano

[00:56:05] He was in it

[00:56:06] Time travel just like in Star Trek First Contact

[00:56:08] Exactly

[00:56:09] Alright Star Trek First Contact

[00:56:11] It's good people should watch it

[00:56:12] Yes a ditto

[00:56:37] We'll figure that out

[00:56:38] So yeah donate $50 to the Kofi page

[00:57:03] But rip

[00:57:04] Well time travel

[00:58:24] So next week

[00:58:25] Because someone paid us to do it

[00:58:27] We are

[00:58:29] You know what's weird is that this episode

[00:58:31] Was sort of a follow up

[00:58:32] To a different Kofi donation episode

[00:58:33] With Star Trek 2

[00:58:34] Next week same thing

[00:58:35] It's a follow up to a different Kofi donation episode

[00:58:38] So a few months back

[00:58:40] This same person

[00:58:41] Made us watch Dragon Ball Super Broly

[00:58:45] Which I was very excited about

[00:58:46] Because I'm a huge Dragon Ball fan

[00:58:47] And I've been rewatching Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z

[00:58:50] Over the last, I guess two years at this point

[00:58:53] And in recent weeks

[00:58:55] We had the sad news that a curatoriyama

[00:58:57] Creator of Dragon Ball

[00:58:58] Has passed away

[00:58:59] And that was a real bummer

[00:59:01] I was very sad about it

[00:59:02] But this person came back

[00:59:04] Donated $50 to the podcast

[00:59:05] And they're gonna make us watch

[00:59:07] Another Dragon Ball movie

[00:59:08] They gave us the choice this time

[00:59:09] Yes

[00:59:10] So they allowed us to choose

[00:59:12] Between Dragon Ball Z Battle of Gods

[00:59:14] Or Dragon Ball Super Super Hero

[00:59:16] Now I have not seen either of these movies

[00:59:19] I'm looking forward to both of them

[00:59:21] I had planned to watch both of them

[00:59:22] At some point anyway

[00:59:23] Once I got to them like in my watch

[00:59:25] Because I've seen as I mentioned

[00:59:27] On that Dragon Ball podcast

[00:59:28] I've seen all of Dragon Ball

[00:59:29] I'm in the middle of my Dragon Ball Z

[00:59:31] Re-watch

[00:59:32] Since then I'm like right at the tail end

[00:59:34] Of the Frieza saga now

[00:59:35] So I still got like six seasons to go

[00:59:37] But like, you know, I'm getting there

[00:59:38] It's gonna take a while

[00:59:39] Yeah

[00:59:40] But once I get through Dragon Ball Z

[00:59:42] My plan is to watch Dragon Ball Super

[00:59:44] Which I've never seen

[00:59:45] And I'm excited about that

[00:59:46] But as a result

[00:59:47] I have less context for what happens in Super

[00:59:50] And so we watched Dragon Ball Super Broly

[00:59:52] Sort of out of context

[00:59:53] And I was thinking about

[00:59:54] Dragon Ball Super Super Hero

[00:59:55] Because I've heard it's really good

[00:59:57] However, I think my choice

[00:59:59] Because this is basically entirely up to me

[01:00:00] Which one we're gonna talk about

[01:00:01] Yeah, for sure

[01:00:02] I think my choice is gonna be

[01:00:03] Dragon Ball Z Battle of Gods

[01:00:05] Okay

[01:00:06] The reasoning for this choice

[01:00:07] Is that Dragon Ball Z Battle of Gods

[01:00:09] Takes place right after Dragon Ball Z

[01:00:11] Which is like, I know the events

[01:00:13] Of Dragon Ball Z

[01:00:14] I'm aware of what happens

[01:00:15] Got it

[01:00:16] And also this movie became the basis

[01:00:18] Of the first season of Dragon Ball Super

[01:00:20] So like later this movie gets expanded on

[01:00:23] Into like a full season of TV

[01:00:25] So I figured, okay, well watch this movie now

[01:00:28] Get a gist of it

[01:00:29] And then later I won't have to watch it

[01:00:31] Like I'll just be able to jump right into

[01:00:32] Dragon Ball Super

[01:00:33] Right, yeah

[01:00:34] You have the context for where this movie's coming from

[01:00:36] And you get a little preview

[01:00:37] For where the season's going

[01:00:38] Exactly

[01:00:39] Nice

[01:00:40] Yeah, so that's the plan

[01:00:41] So Dragon Ball Z Battle of Gods

[01:00:43] That is gonna be the episode next week

[01:00:45] And if you really want us to talk

[01:00:46] About Dragon Ball Super Super Hero

[01:00:48] Donate 50 more dollars

[01:00:49] And we will

[01:00:50] And we'll do it

[01:00:51] Anybody can

[01:00:52] Anybody can

[01:00:53] Does not have to be the same person

[01:00:54] It could be anybody

[01:00:55] That kind of sounded like a threat

[01:00:56] So I just want to say

[01:00:57] Anybody can do that

[01:00:59] The way you said that

[01:01:01] Very good

[01:01:02] Yeah, I'm excited for Dragon Ball

[01:01:04] I liked Broly, Broly was fun

[01:01:05] But definitely felt in that movie

[01:01:08] Like I don't know what the fuck is going on

[01:01:10] I don't know who any of these people are

[01:01:12] Oh yeah, if you listen to that episode

[01:01:13] It's me explaining to Mike

[01:01:14] What's happening in the movie

[01:01:15] For a lot of it

[01:01:16] Exactly

[01:01:17] But yeah, had a great time with that one

[01:01:19] So looking forward to Dragon Ball Z

[01:01:20] Battle of Gods

[01:01:21] Next week on the podcast

[01:01:23] And in the meantime

[01:01:24] The Complete Works will be returning soon

[01:01:26] With season four

[01:01:27] And like we said

[01:01:28] All the episodes over here

[01:01:29] They're going to start getting published

[01:01:30] On both feeds

[01:01:31] So you can go over to the Complete Works

[01:01:33] Subscribe over there

[01:01:34] And yeah, start listening to the episodes on that

[01:01:36] For you to do it

[01:01:37] Yes, we dare you

[01:01:38] Actually, we beg you

[01:01:39] Yes

[01:01:42] Alright, that is the end of this week's episode

[01:01:43] Of Mike and Mike Go To The Movies

[01:01:44] We will see you on the other side

[01:01:53] See you on the next episode
